The movies didn’t tell us anything about voldemorts psyche. They didn’t tell us about his family and his desperate wish his father would be a wizard because his mom died and death is in his eyes not worthy of a wizard. Also the whole story of his mom was so important, because she came from an abusive household and because they married their cousins to remain pure blooded, she and her brother became really ugly. She was in love with the pretty Tom riddle senior and forced him into an relationship with most likely love potion. She basically raped him and they had a child together. They didn’t really tell us he likes trophies (the stolen objects of his victims when he was a kid) They didn’t tell us that Hogwards was his first real home. They didn’t really go into the fact that he killed his muggle family at about the age of 16. Then he changed the memory of his uncle who is a useless alcoholic by now, so that he proudly thinks he murdered the riddles. And lastly we see way too less of his persuasive nature as a teen. The whole picture would be that he was created without love from his father. He left him and his mother immediately. His mom died shorty after riddles birth and left riddle without parents. He was given no love his entire life and he also never loved anyone else. He basically became a sociopath because he showed no empathy. Bering named after his muggle father made him hate his name and also because he didn’t want to be named with a regular name as a lot of other people are named Tom. He wanted to be special and created his own identity as Voldemort. And he was highly intelligent and very charming which he used to be liked by everyone in school. Undercover he managed to open the chamber of secrets and kill his muggle ancestors to create the first horcruxes in his teens. The horcruxes where trophies of something that was valuable in the wizarding world and he had hidden them in places meaningful for him. Like his wizard ancestors house or hogwards as his first home or the cave where he tortured muggle children. In the movies we didn’t get all of that really. There he is just bad but we don’t really get to know much about the depths of his bad nature.
All great points you've made. Cutting out his backstory from the movies was such a mistake, it's so interesting to get this view on Voldemort and his history - to see how he arrived at the point we see in the present day.
There are some frames om thr Goblet of Fire where Voldemort is regenerating. He has long neck, almost skull like head, snake eyes and very weird, almost greenish skin Then he becomes the one we see later on I really wish they kept that appeareance before he completed the revival
I'll look those up that sounds interesting. I've also seen some concept art for Voldemort where he was much less human looking, it's a shame they didn't lean into that.
Not gonna lie, this is a great video. I love how you pointed out the problems in the Cursed Child. Also, I would love to see your video of Top 10 Favorite Moments In Harry Potter or Series You've Watched or Read if you have free time to make those videos.
Thanks very much! That's a good idea for a video, a top 10 moments. I'd definitely like to do that, I'll try and do it within the next few videos I upload!
From the very start of the series it is established that Dumbledore is an incredibly talented and powerful wizard. He invented the deluminator that he used to put out all the lights on the Dursleys' street. No such thing existed before he came up with it. His trap with the Mirror of Erised is also what made the stone impossible for Voldemort to retrieve, again something he came up with entirely on his own. There's also a quote that I take directly from the first chapter from the first book. Dumbledore: Voldemort had powers I will never have. McGonagall: Only because you're too noble to use them. This implies that Dumbledore is just as if not more dangerous than Voldemort himself. He just chooses to not use that power to do evil deeds like Voldemort does. This is not once shown in the movies in any way shape or form. The only scene that even comes close to showing Dumbledore's power IMO is the cave scene in HBP with the fire storm but even that doesn't do his true potential justice. There is not a single spell Dumbledore does not know and this is what makes him so terrifying to the Death Eaters and Voldemort. They know he's capable of things they've never seen before.
All fantastic points. Harry also says this to Voldemort at the end of Deathly Hallows - that it wasn't that Dumbledore didn't dare to use the same spells, but that he was "a better man, a better wizard".
Funny that you know the correct pronunciation of “Voldemort” which most people (including the films) get wrong, yet you’re still mispronouncing the name “Rowling”
Ah yeah a couple of people pointed that out, I'll make sure I say it correctly in the future!
I could write a 20 page essay on my issues with CC. So instead I'll just list out my biggest ones. 1: Voldemort has a child. Do I need to go into further detail about why this is BS? 2: Harry treats his kid like crap despite being treated like crap his entire time growing up. He should have a manual on what NOT to do. 3: Cedric becomes a Death Eater because he lost a competition. Really? 4. Time travel not working even remotely close to how it does in the OG series. You can't change the timeline. 5. Snape is alive for some reason despite not making any sense whatsoever. He should still 100% be dead.
You're 100% right on every point. I've said to others on this video that I feel like the writers don't even like Harry Potter that much, or at least don't really care for it. I spoke about Cedric in my part 2 video of this, and also number 5 is a great point Snape being still at Hogwarts (and also not the headmaster for some reason even if he has to be there) doesn't make sense. There's also a lot of smaller stuff I didn't like but didn't want to just list out in a video. "Voldemort day" is really cheesy, and the whole plot thread of people thinking Scorpius is Voldemort's kid makes no sense (the timelines don't even match up).
Excellent. Hope you keep making videos!
Thanks very much! I'll do my best!
So this is a glorified, it’s a wonderful life? Stupified in this case…
Authors keep trying to make time travel work, they should just stay away from it (although the play had plenty of problems without it anyway tbh).
The line "no way, José" is so out of character for kids born in 21. century. The most of the play reads as a not very good fan-fiction. There are one, at most two, moments that sound in tone with the series.
Is that an actual line from the play? That's very awkward lol I must have missed that. Yeah I've read so much better fanfic written by actual fans of the series.
@@MediaRetrospective-sb2pt Yes, it is so strange for it to be said by anyone outside the US, let alone a wizard. And this isn’t the only strange use of words.
The films fail to show how obscenely perverse he is in using magic in most concerning ways.
The films fail to show how terrifying Dumbledore truly is, how what separates him from world domination is his just not wanting it.
Completely agree.
All these analysis videos of the play/script and even other some things of Harry Potter lore that I’ve watched- is that the fans/readers are better writers than the official ones. This is also why I can’t give up the world- especially HP fanfics or ships. Majority of the fan base know and have written better versions of the entire main cast either in alternate versions or as adults. There’s a reason that the ship fics and the marauders have been so popular in the fan spaces.
You're completely right. I've read some truly great and memorable fanfics of Harry Potter (and other series as well). Obviously the full credit goes to the author who created the original world and characters, but fanfics shouldn't be discounted. If I ever have the good fortune to become a published author, I'd love for people to take create fanfics of my work.
I agree, I always felt that Voldermort was more menacing in the books. In the films, there is actually a scene I quite like and it's the scene at the beginning of Deathly Hallows where he kills that hogwarts teacher. He is a lot more like his book counterpart there, moving slowly, intimidating everyone in the room, and then lashes out suddenly with the killing curse, like a snake attacking his prey. It's great imo. Is it perfect to his book counterpart? No, I don't think he's "Quite" scary enough but maybe that's because of how he had already been portrayed. If his portrayal in that scene had been kept consistent throughout, I think he would have been deemed much more frightening of a villain overall. Also I think the films often had this weird fixation with trying to get through more intense scenes quicker. It didn't build the tension. Often, when reading the books, I'd imagine certain scenes of dialogue as much slower and deliberate, but in the films, and this is much more noticeable in the movies from PoA onwards, they're often shouting, and they seem to be rushing through their lines. It's not always the case, but I do feel like the pacing of some scenes are done to try and fit everything in at the expense of the pacing of the story.
Good point about the pacing, I definitely feel like they don't give scenes enough time to breathe in the movies. And also I find it odd how they cut out some important scenes from the book to make room for some new fluff scenes they added which don't really add anything meaningful.
I disagreed with most of the things you said in the video, and while you could have come to the good conclusion, it is for wrong reasons. Your argument can be basically summed up as "the films show a more energetic Voldemort, which feels like a character assassination to the book version". However you don't take into account the fact that what works in written media, doesn't necessarily work on film. In writing you have a lot of freedom, you can create immersion in more ways that films aren't confined into. How a character percieves the world, smells, feelings, inner thoughts. Films are about visuals, its harder to create atmosphere and they also have to be more compact than a book. Look at the LOTR trilogy where every film is 3 hours long, yet they still couldn't include a lot of scenes. In my opinion this more active and impulsive version of Voldemort fits the screen much better than the book version. His movements and expressions speak of unprecedented evil and unpredictability, he is menacing. The book version of him with the slow movements could have come off as boring and unthreathening in comparison. In my opinion the later film's darker filters and slower pace also compromised their tone, they come off more as a boring attempt at a realistic thriller than a compelling fantasy. I also think he is more threathening post Goblet of Fire than he was in Chamber of Secrets. (of course I mean the films here) I believe this would have applied to Voldemort as well, and while you can create cold and calculated villains on screen too, they have to be believable in order to work. Its true that his character was built up from the first film, but he doesn't do anything which justifies him being *THE* big bad. Sure he defeats Harry and kills Cedric, but they are still students and he later loses to Dumbledore. In the books Rowling may had the pages and freedom to make him menacing, but again, what works in a written story doesn't necessarily work on film. For example you also brought up the awkward Draco scene, which in my opinion works quite well. Voldemort is portrayed as an impulsive and unpredictable character, and that scene does have awkward tension in it, which was on purpose. I wouldn't have been surprised if he just murdered Draco in cold blood to make an example of him, thats why he's believable villain on film. Considering how the movies already have quite a few flaws not even regarding the changes to the original events, I think if they tried to force the book version onto film we would have gotten a stale and overall less threatening antagonist. This also applies to his appearance, as back then characters who would have had to rely on heavy VFX to work were harder to make and weren't as believable. For example, Thanos from Infinity War looks great, because CGI was more advanced at that time, meanwhile around the 2000's it was still unrefined tech
Hey man, thanks for the reply. Couple of thoughts from me: 1. A few people have said that the book version of Voldemort wouldn't work well on screen, but I disagree. I think there are plenty of examples of very menacing, iconic villains who aren't as bombastic or animated as Voldemort. Thanos, the Joker, Hannibal Lecter, Anton Chigurh (probably the best example in this case), etc. It all comes down to the actor's ability to portray such characters and the direction they're given. 2. Something the movies could have done if they wanted to build him up more as a threat is flesh out things which were mentioned off hand in the books and write original scenes rather than the awkward, comedic scenes they added instead. For example, Voldemort killing Amelia Bones. 3. I'm still not a fan of the scene where he hugs Draco, for the reasons I explained in the video. But fair enough if it worked for you. 4. Fair point about the VFX and CGI, yeah agree this might have been tough for them (I don't know much about cgi so can't really comment too much on it). Maybe in the upcoming TV show they'll be able to do more if it has a big budget.
@@MediaRetrospective-sb2pt I don't believe its the actor's performance, thats why the films wouldn't have been able to achieve it in the first place. They went for a darker tone after the 2nd movie, and I don't think it suited the series well, they couldn't find the balance and instead they used it everywhere. The later films lacked color, literally. I doubt they could have put Voldemort on screen and make it work. Not because it couldn't work, but because honestly I don't think they executed the films well in the first place. Something like this would need better execution, which the movies lacked. I only watched the films, but I don't think they are very good by themselves either. (except the first two) And then I didn't even take the adaptation part of it into the equation :D
I kinda disagree he's a good written character. One thing he has in common in both books and movies is that he's one dimentional and boring
I'm surprised to hear you find him boring, even in the book? I find his character very interesting, especially the backstory that's explored in the Half Blood Prince.
@@MediaRetrospective-sb2pt I actually agree with the backstory, I like his backstory a lot and find it interesting, I was referring to the "present" Voldemort in the story which I should have stated, I just think it becomes one dimentional and at some point gets boring
Is there anything about the book/play/script you like? For me it's the scene where Draco admits to having been jealous of Harry for having actual friends and admirers. It sounds super-cheesy but the way it's contextualized it did ring true to me.
Hm I think the only 2 bits that I genuinely liked were Ron and Hermione being honest with each other before sacrificing themselves to the dementors in one of the timelines (even though the whole timeline thing didn't make sense), and I actually like the idea that Albus feels overwhelmed by his father's legacy, although they didn't have to make Harry a bad dad to do that. I have mixed feelings about the Draco scene. I think on its own its a nice moment between Draco and Harry, but at the same time I kind of feel like I never got that vibe from him in the books. He seems to have his own friends in Slytherin house, he certainly cared enough for Crabbe and Goyle to ask Harry to go back and save them. I'm not sure.
Excellent explanation well done
Thanks!

13:32, what happened here is what I sometimes call writerspeak where it’s nominally a character who is saying something but it’s actually the writer. Since it’s out of character for Harry to say this but the writers felt compelled to interject their own objections to Dumbledore’s behaviour into Harry’s dialogue
That's interesting I'll remember this for the future. Very common pitfall for writers unfortunately! Thanks for sharing.
0:55, agreed. (Though I consider that inarguable.)

@@MediaRetrospective-sb2pt I did
Is this entire book just based on alternative timeline bullshit?
Yeah pretty much. It's honestly terrible.
The main magic conflict is, but the issue is that the characters are "out of character" even in the main timeline.
This play was literally the gay love story between Albus and Scorpius confirmed by the playwrights. They are in their 4th year. Most full-blown romances tend to start 6th yr. In the final updated version, all scenes alluding to straight pairs were deleted. 🎉 and Albus tells Harry in the end that Scorpius will always be the most important person in his life and Harry's reaction: 'He looks at his son. He knows this is important. He smiles. He knows.' So any critique that missed out on the whole point of the play (the gay love) should be entirely dismissed. The time turner fiasco was merely happening around the main storyline (the love story). Homophobes stay mad lol.
Two reasons why many feel Voldermont character fell short. First and obvious you can only put so much in a 2 and 1/2 hr movie a lot had to be flushed out to meet the time slot. Second, director David Yates may offer one of the best cinematography however he isn’t that good in character development causing the plot to loose cohesion just look at what he did with Fantastic Beasts movies. His lack of character development is noticeable in the half blood prince movie when Yates cut out the Gaunt family story line. Without this crucial info on Tom Riddle jr. past and how it led him to become Voldermont, for those who haven’t read the book would simply conclude that Voldermont was simply a born psychopath since they’re unaware of the unique circumstances of his birth.
The movies oddly made the decision to cut out some very important scenes from the book, and instead replaced it with awkward filler scenes. I'm hopeful in the upcoming TV show they'll have time to explore all the crucial details from the books.
Lore of Everything Wrong With Harry Potter & The Cursed Child Part 2 momentum 100
A big strength/weakness was making it part of the Harry Potter series. Expanding it to another wizarding school/community independant of the wizarding wars feels like a better idea. It would expensive, but imagine if international productions adapted the plot to take place in that country, ie Ilvermorny in USA productions, Castelobruxo in Latin America, Mahoutokoro in Japan, etc.
Yeah, I think a common trap sequels fall into is relying on familiar characters & settings too much. It'd have been much more interesting to see a completely different time period or geographic location.

What’s frustrating is Ralph Finnes could’ve played the book version of Voldemort perfectly if the writers and directors chose that take. A book accurate Voldemort would be almost like his character in The Menu, they’re very different characters but both have that controlled, calm rage and hatred and resentment at the world that comes out in unexpected ways.
Yeah a lot of people have said he's usually a great actor and I completely agree, it was just a bad creative decision for how to portray Voldemort. Yeah The Menu is a good callout, slightly odd film but I did enjoy it.

No problem! A lot of people wanted a part 2 so hopefully you all enjoy it.
For movies of this scale I have no doubt there was a dozen proposed designs, some of which they would have made and then scrapped somewhere down the line after realizing it doesn't work on screen the way it did in the books. It's the same reason superheroes are so muted and less vibrant in live action. There's also the issue of expression. The less human you go the less of the actors performance comes through. There are some performances which were well preserved like Davy Jones, but then you have to ask the question do you want the whole character to be CG or do you want it to be as practical as possible. In the case of Davy Jones CG was the only possibilty. With Voldemort they had the option to keep it more practical and personally I think they went for the middle ground. The only real issue is he's too animated, angry and theatrical and it takes away from some moments as well as the creepy vibe he should be giving.
I've seen some pretty interesting concept designs for Voldemort, although I'm not sure how legitimate they all are. As you said they leaned too far into one extreme, and I think it really just comes down to them not understanding the core character. I tend to advocate for practical effects as much as possible, but for somebody like Voldemort you definitely need to blend in CG. But some CG characters can look really good, if the proper care and attention is given to them.
I really regret liking the Cursed Child, i was 14 years old when the play and script book came out in 2016, and I thought it was a rather decent story. As an adult, i am embarrassed at how the writers contradicted the original 7 books and ruined the characters we know and love, especially Harry since he's my favorite character, and I hated the way he was mischaracterized in the Cursed Child, smh. I'm also disappointed that the other Next Gen kids James II, Lily II, Hugo and Rose didn't get more screentime, and I thought James would look after Albus, but we didn't see any of that in the story. I hated how it tried to ruin the Goblet of Fire since that's my favorite installment in the series. Cedric becomes a Death Eater after losing the Triwizard Tournament? That's just nonsensical. And how did Voldemort even fall in love with Bellatrix, despite not feeling any genuine love for her and any characters? It does not make any sense. The story's only redeeming qualities are Scorpius' relationship with Albus, and Draco's redemption arc since those are the only good parts of the Cursed Child.
Hey, to be honest there's a lot of stuff I watched and enjoyed as a kid that I later realised had a lot of flaws. I'm a huge fan of the original Harry Potter series, even more than a decade later as an adult, so it makes me sad to see them not being respected. I dropped a part 2 for this if you'd like to see it, where I talk about Cedric/Hermione/Dumbledore. But agree with you there are very few redeeming qualities for this play.

To your point about Voldemort relying on magic over his physicality and humanity, this is specifically contrasted in book 7 by Harry, who digs Dobby's grave by hand. And whilst doing this Harry is able to block out Voldemort's thoughts and feelings. It's a specific thing that makes Harry and Voldemort different from each other. One values his mundane humanity, one tries to get rid of it.

Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts did a better job with the stoic dark lord aesthetic imo. He still moved quite a bit but everything he did he seemed to do with purpose. Even when casting spells he stood still and moved the wand almost like a conductor would move while conducting a symphony rather than just aggressively point his wand and yell “Nyeh!!!”
