SWC Lecture 2023 - Professor Stephen Reicher
In the 2023 SWC Lecture, Stephen Reicher, Wardlaw Professor of Psychology at the University of St. Andrews, explains how the Covid-19 pandemic taught us the integral role of behavioural science (alongside other sciences) in responding to major societal challenges. He also describes how the pandemic showed us the costs of making erroneous assumptions about the drivers of action and the limitations of the perspectives currently dominant in Government behavioural science. Brain circuit that converts spatial goals to escape actions discovered
Переглядів 357Рік тому
If a fire alarm sounded right now, you would instinctively know how to escape because your brain unconsciously keeps track of the exit at all times. Scientists at SWC have discovered a new brain mechanism that mice use to instinctively escape to shelter when faced with a threat. This is the first time they've found such a clear link between spatial goals and actions. To find out more visit: sai...

Context-dependent neural codes: task-agnostic or task-specific?
Переглядів 832 роки тому
Context is everything - without it we cannot make sense of the world. It is essential that our brains can control our behaviour in changing contexts and switch nimbly between tasks. Take a trip to the supermarket for example. When choosing which fruit to buy, you can judge the items by size but you can also switch to judging by colour. Here we are using the same sensory stimulus, e.g. the same ...
Neuroscientists illuminate how brain cells ‘navigate’ in the light and dark
Переглядів 902 роки тому
To navigate successfully in an environment, you need to continuously track the speed and direction of your head, even in the dark. Researchers at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre at UCL have discovered how individual and networks of cells in an area of the brain called the retrosplenial cortex encode this angular head motion in mice to enable navigation both during the day and at night. In the stu...

New study uncovers brain circuits that control fear responses
Переглядів 4772 роки тому
Neuroscientists at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre have revealed a brain mechanism that regulates responses to threat in animals. While it is normal to experience fear or anxiety in certain situations, we can adjust our fear responses depending on our knowledge or circumstances. Many brain regions have previously been shown to be involved in processing perceived danger and mediating fear reaction...

Welcome to my life long world and battle. This sounds so familiar to me because I have lived like this since I was a child (1970s). So either I was vaccine injured with some virus when I was a child or I have the after effects of some virus that infected my body. I have been disabled for so many decades. I'm over 50 now. I have long medical records, surgery histories, fatigue, reproductive system issues, insulin resistance, allergies etc. And no one has definite answers to help me find a cure. It's just always another treatment. Now I'm undergoing heart evaluations. So...I say welcome to all of the new members of the mystery illness group. But wait!!! First, you will be told you may need psychological help. (Even though your labs prove you have something going on.) The only psychological issues are that your patience is tried and pushed to the limit, living as a human just trying to live a "normal" life yet trying to figure out what's going on. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. It's the only club of which I wish there were less members.

Is see neurobiological and neuroscience related research as potentially the most important field of science going forward for humanity. Im and if used for all humanity, mental illness and disorder, reducing crime via fighting the biological component of the causes of crime, understanding epigenetics, human behaviour bias and many other things. I shall be supporting this channel as much as I can!

Thank you. I am also a "Slack" User. I also want to share my story and seek help here. I am 36 years old male, and i am ill over a year. I couldn't get chance to vaccinate before infection because of the limited supply in Turkey. I am living hell. And it isn't about the respiratory system. I got infected in april 2021. Before covid i had gi issues like ibs flatulence etc.. but i could live with them. After covid it is like my GI problems started to have their own neurological problems. Involuntarily swallowing (!) started. My tongue and jaw started to loosen. It is unseen. I felt like there was a tremor and tension through my throat-esophagus track. After losing 15 pounds, 3-4 weeks later i got little better and gained my appetite, but then i spit light red blood like 15-20 times with stomachache and throatache in June 2021. I did endoscopy immediately but they didn't find anything. Then everything got worse. I lost my appetite for good over a year. I started to experiencing a worsening throatache that no ENT professors can detect with camera. I have examined by over 60 professors. Gastroenterologists, ENT Professors, Neurologists etc.. i did blood tests, endoscopies, colonoscopy, CTs, MRs even EMGs. I did incellkine interleukine bloodtest panel. VEGF and CCL5 (Rantes) parameters came up high. But the doctors can not make a connection between these parameters and my symptoms. Throat pain is killing me. Loss of appetite, fatigue, tremors, sometimes epigastic pain.. these are also challenging. I have other symptoms but i dont know how can i bare this throat pain. Gabapentine isn't working. Diclofenac isn't working. And for the last months when i chew my food there is a pain and tension in my jaw muscles. But worst is unexplained throat pain. It is not like sore throat. I don't know apheresis or hbot will help me. I am so desperate. Do you have any insight for my case? I can send you my data, tests, imaging etc.. I can even send you blood sample. Maybe you can help me easing this throat pain or at least expain it to me. No doctors in Turkey could understand this pain. Maybe I can put up with symptoms like fatigue, loss of appetite, tremors, touch hypersensitivity etc. But pain.. I don't know how long can i take it

So what causes long covid? Is it true that the viral debris like the spike proteins left in the system? If so, then my question is, will it just go out from our body in due time?

It has been proven that the testing is faulty and cannot distinguish between Covid and the Flu. Most who test positive, actually just have the Flu.

My friend developed exactly these symptoms but he got it from another virus - monoucleoses. He`s still very sick over 3 decades later, with severe neurological symptoms. There must be a connection to all post viral infection desises. It does not matter which virus that make you so sick, because the outcome is the the same with disability of at least 50 per cent of those affected.

Our innate immune system is fabulously complex. Sometimes "miraculous" discoveries are found quite by " accident" too. Or, by looking for something else entirely, you find the answers others have been looking for for years------ forensic proof and/ or a definitive diagnosis. Latent. Dormant. Active. Cured? All are part of the mysteries of why something can or cannot flare up in certain conditions affecting our immune system and yes, our individual organs. But if you know what or even where the disease icomes from, you can better prescribe a treatment regimen. Hopefully. If not, women especially are ignored, Or just treated as "crazy." The generic term 'fibromyalgia" and it's insidious track record comes to mind. And was forgotten about. Please don't let your research fall into that category. It's too valuable a lesson to ignore. Thank you and good luck with your studies.. 🙏

This is fantastic. Thank you all at PLRC so much for your incredible work on behalf of all us struggling for months with Long Covid -- like me for 16+ months since my Covid episode week of March 18, 2020 -- which I was never offered a test for by my Kaiser Permanente San Francisco physicians, due to their unfortunate ignorance. Then they dismissed all the scientific literature I sent them on Long Covid, because Catch-22!, I had never had a positive Covid test! We are grateful for your efforts, and if I was wealthy, I would make major donations to support you! Lauri
