Overcoming Lust with Krishna and 3 Powerful Bible Verses
✨ Welcome to American Krishna, your introduction to Krishna consciousness (Bhakti yoga, Vaishnavism). ✨ In this episode of American Krishna, Cyril Wohrer-a theologian, Vaishnava priest, and Bhakti yoga teacher since 1997-explores the topic of lust and spiritual purity through the lens of Biblical wisdom, Vedic scriptures, and even a surprising connection to Yoda’s teachings from Star Wars.
By analyzing three powerful Bible verses-Matthew 5:28, Corinthians 6:18, and Job 31:1-and comparing them with teachings from the Bhagavad Gita, Cyril dives into the profound wisdom of mastering lust and cultivating a higher taste. Drawing parallels between Yoda’s famous statement-"Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering"-and Krishna’s timeless advice on how attachment gives rise to lust, anger, and bewilderment, Cyril offers a relatable and insightful way to understand ancient spiritual concepts in a modern light.
Learn how the wisdom of Krishna consciousness provides practical tools to overcome the inner struggles of sexual temptation, redirect your energy toward spiritual growth, and experience lasting fulfillment through divine love. Cyril also shares personal reflections on his 30-year journey of celibacy, the importance of guarding your thoughts, and how experiencing a "higher taste" through God’s love makes transcending lust not only possible but deeply rewarding.
Key highlights of this episode include:
The connection between thoughts, desires, and actions, and how to break the cycle of attachment.
The Bhagavad Gita’s guidance on overcoming lust, anger, and illusion.
Practical tips for cultivating a "higher taste" through Bhakti yoga practices like chanting, meditation, and scripture study.

Desire and sexual pleasure have no relevance to seeing reality clearly. Focusing on it and dedicating effort to repress it is a waste of time and resources.
My authority is the Vedic literatures, accepted by billions over millennia. And the Bible, similarly authoritative in the Western world. What's your authority, man? On what strength do you claim, "Desire and sexual pleasure have no relevance to seeing reality clearly." Why should I believe you more than the Vedic authority?
@@AmericankrishnaThank you for responding! I didn't expect you to. I was just sharing my opinion, and I also didn't expect you to believe my statement. It was meant to provide another perspective. I do not have any external authority other than reality itself. The fact that millions of people have accepted an idea doesn't tell me much about the truth of that idea. Millions of people believe all kinds of fantasies. They have done so throughout our history, and they will continue to do so in our future. Desire and sexual activity are merely physiological functions with no impact on our intellectual understanding when not repressed. Intellectual understanding is a neurobiological activity, and its limits depend on innate ability and education. Normal sexual activity does not interfere with intelligence.
@@EduardoRodriguez-du2vd Sure. All good. You say, " do not have any external authority other than reality itself. " But that's begging the question, isn't it? " Normal sexual activity does not interfere with intelligence." I think it does, and it seems there is scientific studies backing me. For example, the detrimental effects of porn watching have been pretty well established. Intelligence has to do with the the psyche, the mind, etc... Those/that things/thing is clearly affected by sexual behavior.
@@Americankrishna No. One uses reality to support ideas. One does not support reality over ideas. Ideas need the foundation of reality, or there is nothing to base them on rationally. No. The abuse of any stimulation deteriorates balance. But using the abuse of pornography consumption as an equivalent to normal sexuality is a desperate and fruitless argument. The point to prove is the negative effect of normal sexual activity on the understanding of reality. Intelligence is a product of the psyche (understood as the totality of brain activity), and every aspect of perceived reality affects our mental activity. However, "affecting" does not imply that this effect is negative. Affecting can be positive or negative, depending on the case. You do not justify it because you consider it only negative.
@@EduardoRodriguez-du2vd Well, again, I ask for your proof, or evidence. You can't just say "reality" because that's begging the question, in my opinion- precisely because "reality" (or the nature thereof) is the topic at hand. And I think we're splitting hairs with "affecting" vs "effecting." I accept the model of what's known as the '3 modes of nature "(you can google it if you wish, or look at some videos I made on it). According to this model, happiness in the 'mode of passion," epitomized by sexual pleasure, is described as being symptomatic of endless hankering. Happiness that is influenced by goodness/virtue, on the other hand, is free of hankering and - surprise, surprise, is not related at all to sex desire. So, at least according to this model, the claim that desire and sexual pleasure have no relevant to seeing reality clearly is just incorrect.
Loved the insight! It was a pleasure meeting you, keep striving for the supreme goal ❤️ Hare Krsna!
Thank you.
Nice video presentation concept content
Right ✅️
Great story indeed 😊
Hey Radha Krishna 🙏🙏
I doubt very much the problem is Aix. If you were living in Paris or Marseille you might have the same problem. It sounds like you have the ability to communicate effectively in French which is the major obstacle to many. Living abroad in a new place is a lot of work. I moved to the South of France but I already knew people there who knew more people there. That helped a lot. Loneliness was not a problem. The problem was more the inconveniences of living in a rural area as I came from London and also not having a good enough command of the language, especially when I arrived. Best advice for those contemplating living in France: learn as much French as you can BEFORE you go. Having to always drive everywhere was also something I didn't like. France is very beautiful, and the people very nice, but I learnt a long time ago that location is not everything. More important are who you are with, what you are doing, and basically do you prefer a more metropolitan life or a rural one. A more important question I think is rather than do you prefer living in the UK or France, is do you prefer very large cities, or regional ones/small towns. In the end I think you will just not get everything you want anywhere. I prefer smaller towns, but I know I also miss a lot about living in a large city.
Solid insights.
@@krisrattus8707 thank you.
I am in the process of becoming an Eastern Orthodox Christian. This video came up on the algorithm and I was curious about Cyril's perspective. I gleaned some good insights from him while leaving aside the parts that didn't resonate. The beatitude Cyril mentions is often spoken of by Orthodox monks, especially from the monastic epicenter of Mount Athos, Greece. There is a 5-volume set of books from Mount Athos called the Philokalia that contains monks' writings (spanning centuries) about the "prayer of the heart" or "the Jesus prayer." Volume 4 (especially the writings of Nikiphoros the Monk, St Symeon the New Theologian, St Gregory of Sinai) deals with this prayer. Monks would repeat the prayer for hours daily-"Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" (or a shortened version, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me")-while sitting close to the ground and synchronizing the prayer with their breath. Many monks throughout the centuries have attained permanent states of beatitude-and thereby freedom in their souls from the "passions" (eg, lust, anger, etc.) through this practice of contemplative prayer and other ascetical practices. Cheers.
@@justunity777 thank you for your beautiful comment.
@@Americankrishna Hare Krsna Chandrashekhar Prabhu. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Srila Bhakti Charu Swami Gurumaharaj! What is described by 'justunity777' reminds me of pranayama and maha mantra meditation: repeating names of God, as Christians consider Sri Jesus God, this works in a similar way. Greetings, Ys, Krsnadasa, Antwerp
Normally I would give a thumbs down to a misleading thumbnailed video. I was expecting a "how to" from you. I too have experienced the "higher taste", the transcendental a small number of times and I too therefore am well aware of how much greater it is to experience than carnal pleasures. But carnal pleasure is available at any time 24/7 whereas 'bliss', or whatever it is rightly to be called, visits like a miracle just a handful of times in a lifetime. To be "weak" is to lack discipline and I certainly lack discipline. I, like so many others, am not a man of faith. I am weak and ordinary. Therefore, your video had nothing of value to offer - despite representing itself to the contrary.
Sorry you didn't like it. I didn't quite follow the logic of your argument, though. But anyway, sorry you didn't like it. All the best.
human evolution gave us lust to encourage reproduction. it isn't a thing you choose to have. it is a reaction. now what you choose to do about your lust is a thing to think about. but there is nothing inherently wrong with experiencing lust. unless it's for animals or children, then you should seek counseling.
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it. At the same time, I disagree with what you say. I disagree because I accept the authority of the Vedic literature, especially the one I always talk about on this channel, namely, the Bhagavad Gita. And the Veda, literature say that lust is actually a perverted reflection of our original, inherent, dormant love of God. When we reject God, our love for him, becomes pervertedly, transformed into lust.
It appears you've comitted an unintentional philosophical divergence from the message of disciplic succession from 4:00 to 4:08.
Why exactly?
Very nice video. Sharing KC that is easy to relate, honest and at the same time representing Krishna genuinely. Very inspiring and cool!
Thank you.
You make a lot of interesting points. There is a lot I have to say about this. First, it is mentioned somewhere in the Vedic scriptures that the reason for having children is actually not necessarily to make more devotees or followers of God (like Christians think), but it is actually to ultimately curb sex desire by seeing the result of our actions. So the reason for having children is to purify the parents. As a parent I have seen this personally, and I think other parents can attest to this, that the desire does deminish after having children, especially for the mother, as this is the biological position. Second, I feel that we have to look at the type of society we’re living in as well. We can see that more rajasic or even demoniac societies are promoting sex of all types, like now in Hollywood we can see clear propaganda promoting sex with minors, or the general sexualization of minors. So it’s extending further and further into all realms. And then what we see is the increase of illicit children in these societies, like what’s happening now in America. I want to share the story of the Kamasutra temple in Madhya Pradesh… the story is that the KamaSutra temple, featuring figures in various sex poses, was created because the people of the area were too pious, and were not making children at all. So the temple was constructed to try to instill more lists desire into the citizens. And it worked- the number of children began to increase. Another point to make is about the state of freedom, especially in Western countries, where being independent is very important, and the movements of sexual liberty and freedom of women have also taken place. In Eastern and generally communist societies, people tend to be much more prude somehow, probably because of their general feeing of moins liberty, in comparison to Western societies. But still- even in places like Pakistan where women and men are very segregated, men still have such a desire that they find other means to “do it”, like even with other men, and boys- and don’t consider this gay. So there is a lot of nuance to delve into on this topic… I believe our Bhaktivinode Thakur stated that the safest ashram to be in in Kali Yuga is in the Grihasta ashrams, and for what reason? You make some interesting points saying that both singles and marrieds are in the same boat, which is pretty much true… we also have to think about the situation of marriage in the West even a 100-200 years ago, where some type of arranged marriage or marriage of practicality was more common than that of love marriage… but if the people could have both, that was a bonus. People were also married much younger than today, when people get married around 30. At the same time the Victorians wrote books about the proper way to suffer, they were much more austere than Westerners today. So what is the actual problem… we have too much desire because we are too independent, too lonely… we forget our relationship with Krishna… we want to feel that Madhurya of the spiritual world while in the material world… so we have this low and dirty material desire for sensual pleasure… what to do… overcome- Chant Hare Krishna… accept our material suffering. Harinam gives more real pleasure, ultimately…

I can only agree . This is premium level. Great shooting, tight plot and a huge message. I watched for the third time.
Brilliantly made and important message! How we are all attached to our birth places! From the universe's perspective these places are so temporary and insignificant - but we think it's the navel of the cosmos.
What convinced me that I am a soul is that no amount of sense gratification can bring deep satisfaction, it always brings bigger and bigger emptiness and devotional service brings bigger and bigger happiness. Everyone can have that experience... Nice video editing by the way! Hare Krishna!

I think I will love to see of a podcast of you with a Buddhist monk. I really enjoy their perception of God and soul. R you planning to coming back to India?
Their perception of God and soul? Mostly, they adhere to the anatma doctrine (no soul, no God).
@@Americankrishna isn’t that a perception? No one can say here’s the soul or look there’s no god
@@shuvampal7290 you have to pick between belief in atma or anatma.
@@Americankrishna still as u said it’s a belief. Few days ago I was taking a bath in Ganga and I was thinking that I can put question mark on anything in the world. To take anything is the world I need some amount of belief. On the other hand my existence is the one thing I can’t put question mark, don’t need any belief to say here I am, yet I can’t prove it.
Did you get to preach to that Buddhist monk about the need for him to give up those antiquated robes and get hip attire like you wear?
He's a monk. I have no issues with monks wearing saffron robes. I have an issue with Western (mostly white) householders wearing antiquated white village robes from Bangladesh, coupled with Middle-Eastern "kurtas," and a (non exclusively vaishnava) rat-tail in the back of their bald heads. I have a serious issue with that. But everyone, including in the West, understands when a monk wears a monk dress, in effect showing that he is 'socially dead.' All good on that front.
Good reply 👍@@Americankrishna
