Linux Myths Part 1
Переглядів 519День тому
In this video I attempt to debunk the Myths that Linux is hard and you have to know the terminal to use Linux. There are a couple of places where I say things like "Kate" is the default text editor in "Linux" which is not accurate. Different Linux distributions have different default applications. In Kubuntu as well as most KDE based distros Kate is the default text editor. Your distro may have...

How to not edit videos in Linux
Переглядів 20214 днів тому
How to create videos in Linux without editing. Linux has plenty of good video editors such as: Davinci Resolve, Lightworks, Blender, Olive, Kdenlive, Openshot etc., but you can also do a lot with just the command line. Here I use ffmpeg to encode video to mp4, combine mp4 videos without re-encoding and generate a thumbnail. Note: You might notice that the video is spead up after combining. This...
How to kill processes in Linux
Переглядів 30714 днів тому
This is a quick video showing 3 ways to kill processes in Linux. 1. Using the KDE System Monitor. This will work in any distro with a KDE desktop environment. If you are not using KDE it should be similar in your distro. 2. Using the terminal with the ps command. This will work in any distro 3. Using xkill. This should work in any desktop that uses x11. Note: Before setting this up try [Ctrl] [...
KDE Plasma vs Windows 11 - File copy / paste / rename comparison

Comparing simple file copy / paste rename in Windows vs KDE Plasma. Of course in both you can also use [Ctrl] c and [Ctrl] v but I used the gui so you could see what I was doing. Which one looks more user friendly to you?
Show Windows the Door

In this video I go over the Windows 11 unsupported hardware disclaimer and why you might want to install linux instead of buying a new computer. I go over a little bit of os history, talk to AI and make some mistakes that I have left in such as a few typos as well as thinking my internet connection was still active when it wasn't and turning on airplane mode unnecessarily. Hope you enjoy the vi...

Create a bootable thumb-drive with Windows
i did not like ubuntu/gnome. but linux mint with xfce. geeeeez run like marathon runner. i would like to try debian 12 with kde. but this mint its so annoying .. its just works that i am so not in mood to touch.
Mint is an excellent Distro. If you are happy with Mint, by all means, stick with it. I will keep posting videos on my favorite KDE features. If you see something that really makes you want to try KDE, I recommend grabbing a faster drive next time they are on sale and try a KDE distro on that. If it doesn't work for you, you can use Clonezilla or other tool to clone your existing Mint to the new drive and have a faster system. That said, you found a Distro that works for you and runs great on your hardware so you are already winning!
Thanks for sharing.
I think one of the problems here is that we're assuming most people opening a program called "notepad" would think it should act as if the name is "html editor." Do you actually believe 99% of people getting on a Windows pc want to write code? Do you think if they saw code they would know what it was? I do IT for a living and a lot of people think they got hacked if they accidentally open an xml in notepad. That being said, Microsoft is a business and they do have an application which does everything that you're describing. It's called Microsoft word. It may seem odd to you but most everyday people use that and they do pay for it but still... Dey do not edit de html my friend. That's why notepad is just notepad. It literally JUST got a history, it would close and be lost forever. Now it an open previous versions and add tabs. What YOU want is Notepad++ and it's free. It's something like 2 out of 1,0000 computers have Notepad++ installed because that's how niche some of these features are but then for other people... You can't live without them. I hope that my intent was understood, not to flam anyone but to simply point out why these things are the way that they are.
I was simply comparing the default out of the box text editors in KDE vs Windows and making the argument that out of the box you get a much more capable text editor in KDE. All of your points are good ones though.
Notepad++ is my preferred Notepad.exe alternative but after your video I'm going to try Kate. Thanks
This is nice to hear. Please let me how Kate works out for you both pros and cons. I haven't run Windows in a long time, but am very interested in how it performs on Windows as well as how it compares to Notepad++.
Kate should be compared to VS Code, not the simple notepad.
That is a more equal comparison, but VS Code is not the default text editor in Windows 11. This was a comparison of the default text editor in Windows vs Kubuntu. VS Code and the open source fork VS Codium are platform agnostic. So if I were going to compare VS Code, I would compare VS Code on Linux vs VS Code on Windows. I might do a VS Code vs Kate comparison in the future though as that would be a fun comparison. Especially since Kate is using native widgets on KDE and VS Code uses electron.
A more comparable app is Notepad++. Super lightweight and feature rich. Especially if Notepad++ is chosen as the default app instead of Notepad.exe
Yes, Notepad++ blows notepad out of the water, but I was comparing the default (out of the box) text editors in Kubuntu vs Windows. If I were comparing Linux Mint (Xed) or the default text editor in Ubuntu (GNOME text editor) to notepad it would be a much closer comparison as well.
there is already 1 mayor thing wrong all lanes have the same color !!!!! makes it impossible to see in a glance what track is what..... so I already stop watching from that point... I stay with reason... that software can't be beat
Good point. In version 1.3+ you can set the color for each track. LMMS is a very basic. For real audio production I use Bitwig, but Reason is fantastic too.
You just got your 58th sub! Hope the channel grows big
I can see this channel getting big! I'm glad to be 1/57th of your start
Thank you for the kind support. This video is pretty rough and unedited. I was going to pull it and put together a better example. I really wish YT allowed replacing videos or had some kind of versioning. It would be nice to be able to post a rough cut, clean it up later and retain the comments.
great video , thanks. Notepad seems basic text only, Kate able to deal with almost all newer files that need editing.
Thank you and you are absolutely correct. Kate handles everything, Notepad not so much.
I loved the intro!
Thanks, The logo was created in Inkscape and then animated with friction which is an awesome 2d vector animation tool. I should probably make a video about it.
Just discovered your channel. Great content! Subbed!!!
Thank you
damn, music hits hard at 3:40
LOL, I added markers and added one for the music drop :)
I been using Kubuntu Linux going back to 2015. It's the best.
Learn how to use windows tiling first
Windows is supposed to be easier to use right? So it should be intuitive right? For me the way the built in KDE tile manager works just makes sense and is intuitive. The built in Windows tile manager can't even display content while resizing and completely breaks if you switch layouts. I would be happy to make a more fair comparison if there is something I was doing wrong in Windows. I haven't used Windows in 15 years and will never go back, but do want to be as fair and unbiased as possible. That said, this is a pro Linux and specifically pro KDE channel.
Hyperland just exists
Hyperland is great, but this is a comparison between the built in tiling in Windows 11 vs KDE. Out of the box, KDE comes with a much better tiling manager than Windows 11 in my opinion.
I think KDE is best for me. It is fast, complete and not too resources hungry. tilling is easy peasy, customable, has KDE connect (mostly i use to share clipboard). network manager is good. File manager is incredible, accessing network storage is fast via cifs. you can also expand subfolder ❤ I leave the touchpad enabled even though I use a mouse for switching desktop. imagine if you had to compare folder changes visually and edit files simultaneously.
I completely agree. KDE is my favorite desktop for many of the reasons you mentioned. Another reason I love it is the ability to connect to remote servers over ssh via fish:// in dolphin and view and filter remote file systems with thumbnails. Nothing else compares. I also like the way it is simple by default, but has a ton of advanced features under the hood.
You left out, how to "release the KRAKEN" on a process.... 'killall -9 chrome' if that cant kill it your computer is off.... lol you could also use lesser harsh signals too if you wanted.. i guess...
Yes, I did. I have been trying to keep things simple for noobs, but should have put that in there. As well as ps -Al | grep chrome, kill -9 pid etc. I really wish UA-cam would let you replace videos or at least add to them. I guess I could make a new video with terminal process related commands and link to it from the first one.
how do you enable tiling on KDE? I'm running KDE Wayland.
It should already be enabled. You just have to hit [Meta]+T. By default [Meta] should be your Windows key. If that doesn't work then go to System Settings > Workspace Behavior > Desktop Effects, and enable "Tiling Editor". After hitting [Meta]+T and designating the tile regions just drag a window and hold [shift] to drop it on one of the tile regions.
@@nixnoob that worked, thank you
@@nixnoob Most people just call the meta key (windows key) the super key on Linux btw
@@coolluckyme2007 My pleasure, glad I was able to help.
there is no comparison between Microsoft Windows and KDE. Linux, KDE, Plasma are all junk.do not compare them with windows.
you are joking right? laughing so hard.
Correct, there is no comparison. One is slow spyware that you rent. The other is a fast secure OS that you own.
duuuuuude the ads.... Im surprised any linux user would be using chrome... Thats like saying "I love freedom... I hate freedom..." lol
I have mixed feelings about the ads. I should probably just use Brave or another browser that helps maintain anonymity and blocks ads. In chrome, any extension you install can collect data, so I try to keep the extensions to a minimum which includes ad blockers. For the most part the ads do not bother me and they are the reason a lot of stuff is free. I would rather have free content and ads then have everything behind paywalls. That said, I do wish they were more helpful. When I buy a mattress, I do not need to see ads for the mattress I just bought. Maybe sheets and comforters, but for all the tracking and AI they still haven't figured this out. :(
@@nixnoob I don't have mixed feelings if there are ads they get blocked.. paywalls don't get views.. Everything i use is free and open source.. have no issues. But, I was referring to content creation... better to keep videos clean and don't sponsor people and products you aren't paid for. Most of my ads are blocked by the router and don't collect anything... Either way brave's adblocking is built in, not 3rd party and does not collect any data assuming you dont opt-in....
@@nixnoob With that said... I am a paid Patreon for a couple Linux related channels i really liked... its not about the money... its about annoying me... i don't like to be annoyed... ads annoy me... LOL ads can also be malicious. I am always looking for new linux content. I hope yours will do well
Thank you, I hope my channel does well also. I will be sure to block ads in future videos and welcome any other suggestions you might have.
whats this trasnpareny you use ??? kvantum themes ???
I am just using the built in transparency in KDE. It can behave a little different if you are using X11 or Wayland. In this video I was using Wayland. If you do not know what that is let me know and I can clarify. Basically, I just went into the desktop effects, enabled transparency and set inactive windows to be semi-transparent. I have seen people mention that you have to have desktop contrast and blur turned off for it to work in Wayland, but I do have blur turned on at the first or second tick. I can make a video about it if that would be helpful.
Can you also make tutorials on Learning OS ?
By learning OS are you referring to learning Linux itself as opposed to the KDE desktop? If so, I would be happy too. Is there anything in particular that you would like to see? Most common commands, File structure, File permissions, Users and groups etc.
great explanation 👏👏
Thank you, Glad you liked it!
You don't *have* to use the terminal, but knowing a couple of basic commands - ls, mv, rm, cp - can make life a lot easier and faster.
Agree!
Oops, I said Braille twice instead of Morse Code. GCompris does also teach Braille as well.
I just stumbled across this vid, I switched to mint a month ago as i'm on a hardware locked pc and not in the position to purchase another computer atm. For what i use it for many browsing and the occasional document then i gave it go. Its a little bit of a learning curve but happy with the decision. Feels like a newish machine.
I love hearing stories like this. You have a newish machine with a new OS and helped the environment in the process. It is always tough learning something new, but you are learning something better. There is a reason 100% of super computers and 96.4% of internet servers run Linux. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. I am always looking for new content ideas. I have been using Linux so long that I forget what was hard to learn in the beginning.
Already switched to Linux in 2017 and never used Windows again.
Been long enough. Windows 8 was bad enough to make me switch and 11 sure isn't calling me back 🤣
TIL about concat
Nowadays internet browsers (chrome/firefox) spawn multiple processes after being started. Does using kill or xkill terminate the child processes as well or only the parent process? In Windows Task Manager and other equivalent Process Managers like Process Explorer and System Informer, we have the option to 'Terminate Tree' which will do the same.
xkill will kill the main process and child processes for the window you click on. I forgot to mention killall which you use by typing killall and then the program name. Ex. killall chrome which will kill all processes for chrome.
yes didn't realise my elderly parents were running win7 last year and knowing they had old hardware I installed debian 12, they were hesitant at first but have no worries as elderly casuals - loving it in fact
YES, I USE THIS KIND OF SCRIPT TO MERGE SEVERAL OF MY VIDEOS WITHOUT USING ANY PROGRAMM. EVEN IN WINDOWS. CONCAT IS GOOD.
