What is Fallout's historical argument? - History Through Games
One of the goals of this channel is to change the way people think about what a historical game is and is not, and the Fallout series is a perfect case study. The Fallout games are at once science fiction, taking place in a distant future that has been torn apart by nuclear technology, as well as historical fiction, in that the game world asks the question, what if the Cold War never ended? By changing historical variables about the Cold War and then following the potentional consequences into the future, Fallout makes facinating arguments about which historical processes were the most significant for producing the real world that we current live in. But what historical varible does Fallout portray as the most important thing standing between us and nuclear apocalyse? That's the question I will be answering in this video.

For Honor offers players the chance to pit knights, vikings, and samurai against one another in a fun and ridiculous matchup of warriors that was not designed to be historically accurate at all. One subscriber suggested I do a video about For Honor, and when I told a colleague of mine who works at Ubisoft Montreal as a historical consultant, they actually laughed and told me that this is not a ...

    Fantastic video! Loved how you broke everything down. For Honor May not be historical accurate…at all! But the stuff that is is so dang cool. Like how Warden’s Execution “End Them Rightly” is based off a real way of finishing your enemy in real knight training. Stuff like that is super cool to see! Plus, it’s actually a solid fighting game. If I could recommend a game, Battlefield 1’s War Stories are some of my favorites.

    I feel like you almost had to grab footage from very early For Honor to to avoid talking about the ludicrous historical state the game is currently in after introducing: A Chinese empire, a Cantonese speaking pirate, an Egyptian Medjay, an Aztec warrior, and an Arabian warrior on top of the Knights, Viking, and Samurai.

    Very interesting! I love ark and can't wait for more games to appear on this series! A quick tip though, while you're explaining the topics, try to mention how each historical event is related to the game's historical event, rather than explaining the game and historical subject separately, then discussing how they're related. This can help remind the viewer of the correlation and can make the video easier to understand. Great video though!

    Years ago I was flipping through some random book in my university’s library on this topic and I was fascinated but never was able to find the book again. I always wanted to delve into it but never had the chance/time and so it gradually faded away. Now, searching around for something else I’ve stumbled back into the Revolution in Military Affairs - what a wonderful coincidence. I really enjoyed this video and look forward to watching more from you. I’m wondering, do you have any recommended reading on the topic? I would love to find out more. Keep up the great work

      Thanks so much, and apologies I never responded! I got pulled away from the channel for a while. A great book I would recommend is "Reassessing the Revolution in Military Affairs: Transformation, Evolution and Lessons Learnt," by Jeffery Collins and Andrew Futter, published in 2015. It's got a great assessment of the concept and how it has changed over time. I plan to start listing references like these in the details of my videos, just haven't gotten around to it yet!

  • @AlexStarOfStarWars

    I take both the ambiguity and agency stance together. The game seems to try to appeal to both political audiences and in the end didn't appeal to anyone's satisfaction, which is pretty ambiguous itself. You can this with Elizabeth who goes from being enthusiastic about Columbia once she left the tower to becoming critical once the rose colored glasses comes off, and goes from being pro-Vox Populi to indifferent once she saw how violent they're. In terms of the agency stance, I would like to add on to that stance with the small choices in this game (e.g. Picking between Songbird or the Cell for Elizabeth's necklace; Sparing or killing the solider Dewitt knew, etc.) which didn't have any major impact to the story. In the previous games, the player's choices would determine the ending of each game's story. Here, Bioshock Infinite manipulates the player into thinking their choices would also matter in this game given their previous experience in the first two. Regardless of player's choices, the ending is already predetermined. The title "Infinite" is even more ironic since it suggests to the player that something is limitless on the surface, when it really means 'Infinite' timelines but with a predetermined outcome. If the whole agency stance and game's ending didn't exist, then I think you could say it's simply a social commentary. But with it, the social commentary argument is weaker imo. With those two stances in mind (ambiguity, agency), the game suggests to me that neither Columbia nor the Vox Populi fractions have anything of value to stand behind and that no matter what the player does everything, nothing can change the outcome of the conflicts and the ending of the game. To me it suggests some of nihilistic stance. Also, cool to see a fellow historian. I got my B.A. in History. One game I recommend doing is one on Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords. It's a really deep and philosophical game.

    • @Level1Historian
      @Level1Historian 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for your input! You're point about Infinite's approach to choices being a juxtaposition again the previous two games is interesting, it relates to the concept of "intertextuality" where meaning of one text (or game) is based on its relation to other texts. I like it! I'll also add the Star Wars games to my list, I think I remember seeing a sale on them somewhere...

    • @AlexStarOfStarWars

      @@Level1Historian Thanks for the feedback. I would also like to mention that Infinite had a LOT of content cut from the final product. So maybe choices would have mattered in the cut content. I think it would have been neat if there were multiple endings depending on your choice to side with the Vox Populi (good ending), Columbia (bad ending) or go alone (neutral ending). A lot of this cut content 'they said' could have been made into 5 or 6 games.

    You talk a lot about games that seem like they might not have historical elements but actually do. Are there any significant examples of games that seem historical but are actually misrepresenting or obfuscating historical elements?

    • @Level1Historian
      @Level1Historian 7 місяців тому

      That's a tricky question, because pretty much every game that sells itself as historical is designed to sell copies and not make people think critically about the past, so I would say all games misrepresent history to some extent. This is especially due to the problem of agency and interactivity: games require players to be able to have an influence on gameplay, meaning that games nearly always need to allow players to alter history in some way. For these reasons it's a little unfair to critique commercial games for misrepresenting history, and that's why I focus on using games to explore related histories!
