To get you in the mood for season 11 of Bring Back V10s, we're bringing you a bonus episode from our 1997 revisited series (which we made exclusively for The Race Members' Club) in which Glenn and the gang ranked the top 10 drivers from that classic F1 season.
Following the format of our usual top 10 episodes, Glenn Freeman is joined by Matt Beer, Ben Anderson and Edd Straw to debate (or argue!) about who should be included, and which drivers did the best job over the course of an epic year of racing.

Exclusive interviews with all the Honda and Yamaha riders

Honda and Yamaha used to monopolise the MotoGP title fights. Now they’re mocked as having their own ‘Japanese Cup’ at the back of the field, as even getting into Q2 feels like a victory given how far they’ve fallen. All of which must make it tough to be a rider at one of those brands. But when Simon Patterson sat down for exclusive one-on-one interviews with all six Honda and Yamaha riders for ...

    I never understood why Red Bull gave him the extension in the first place. He was good enough in the first two rounds but when we get to Australia, Verstappen is out and Perez finishes 5th, 20 seconds behind 4th and almost a minute off the lead. (if I say 'a minute off the lead, it's almost a minute) Even then, he wasn't able to be dependable if Verstappen couldn't deliver. In Miami in the early stages when Verstappen was cruising, Perez was getting hassled by an objectively slower Mercedes. Imola - a minute off the lead, drove off the road on his own Monaco - Knocked out of Q1 and even if he matched his best lap from FP3, he would have made Q2 but that's it. Canada - Crash Spain - a minute off the lead, 20 seconds behind 7th Austria - a minute off the lead, finished 17 seconds behind Verstappen who had a crash and an extra pit-stop Spa - Finished 40 seconds off the lead after starting at the front, finished behind all of the top 4 on the road. The list goes on. He never looked like he could keep up. Nevermind driving style, or balance or luck. It comes down to pure pace and for most of this year, he just hasn't looked like he can run fast enough now.

      So what you're saying is Checo should have been allowed to have bad results for two more years? You'd rather watch Checo struggle than find his way to another team with a car that suits his driving style better? Lawson is still malleable when it comes to driving style while Checo was already set in his ways when he came to Red Bull. I'm confident he'll land on his feet with possibilities for 2026.

    They ranked Charles LeClerc 2nd and Lando Norris 3rd, but Lando Norris won TWICE as many races as Charles LeClerc. Lando Norris - 4 Charles LeClerc - 2 Lando Norris - 8 pole positions. Charles LeClerc - 2 pole positions Lando Norris out-qualified his teammate - 21 to 3 Charles LeClerc out-qualified his teammate - 14 to 9 Lando Norris finished in 2nd place in the Driver's Championship Charles LeClerc finished in 3rd place in the Driver's Championship In every statistical category, Lando Norris completely destroyed Charles LeClerc, but these so-called "expert" F1 journalists have Charles LeClerc ahead of Lando Norris. I'm so happy that Lando Norris completely shut Scott Mitchell up. Before the summer break, Scott Mitchell was talking a lot of sh*t about Lando Norris. Saying things like Oscar Piastri was a better F1 driver than Lando Norris. But Lando Norris came back after the summer break and completely dominated Oscar Piastri. Several times, Lando Norris out-qualified by Oscar Piastri over half a second. Lando Norris also helped Oscar Piastri win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

      @hotdiggityd During his rookie season, Lando Norris went toe-to-toe with his much more experienced teammate in Carlos Saintz for two seasons. For two seasons, Lando Norris completely embarrassed Daniel Ricciardo. He actually retired him. Alpine spent millions of dollars getting Oscar Piastri up to speed on F1 cars. They rented out several F1 tracks. Went it was time to drive for Alpine, he jumped ship for McLaren after everything they did for him. Character matters. For 6 seasons, Lando Norris stuck with McLaren even though they were often at the back of the grid. Christian Horner and Red Bull Racing were desperate to sign Lando Norris, but he stuck with McLaren. Character matters.

    • @dylanburston7453
      @dylanburston7453 3 дні тому

      Leclerc nearly beat Norris in the standings (the only stat that matters) in a much worse car. Norris had the best car for 14 races, Charles just 3. And regards your comments on the rookie season/ Sainz. In his rookie season, Lando scored just 10 more points than Charles in his. Lando was in the 4th fastest car, and Charles the 8th. He also didnt go "toe to toe" with Sainz, he was demolished by him in 2019, but did close up in 2020. Weras Charles,in only his 2nd and 3rd season, retired vettel, even scoring 3 times his points in 2020. Lando only embarrassed riccado because of the way the car behaved under breaking, which was the total opposite of what he liked.He performed better in objectively worse cars (namley the Renault and the AT) that behaved the way he liked. And Lando didnt stay with Mclaren because of his "character" Mclaren blocked the deal. Mclaren were crap for one season, after a massive rule change. Also, you seem to think that driver academeys are the Mafia, and the driver needs blinding, unflinching loyalty. They do not. The Alpine academey has only just promoted its first driver into a F1 seat at the main team, for the first time in about 10 years.

      @LetoxxIant 12 днів тому

      @@inferno9103 yeah, statistically Piastri was worse than in his first year. I also think he still needs some time before he can be a title challenger or even a challenger for the no.1 in McLaren here the Qualifying stats for Pias first and second season: Qualifying 2023 Lando 15 - Osca 7; roughly 2:1 Qualifîng 2024 Lando 22 - Osca 3; roughly 7:1 Other statistics do look similar. He also improved in others it was like 2:1 in points in 2023 (roughly 50% of Landos points) this year it was a way better 5:4 (roughly 80% of Landos Points) Piastri advantage is he takes more risk than Lando, who was in McLaren when they were a bottom team (and in immense financial trouble) and it was always more important to finish a race and keep the car intact than risk to much. Lando still has that mindset, Osca never had to adapt to it. So Piastri takes chances when he sees them, Lando still overthinks some situations. In races Lando takes much better care of his tires although Pia improved too but is still far away from Landos level. That is why Lando is often able to have the best speed at the end of races, especially this year, even with older tires.

    Lando drove flawlessly to clinch McLaren's WCC, let's focus on that instead of focusing on drivers making digs at each other over team radio.

    Points for all finishers seems like the logical endgame. It makes sense from an excitement point of view (I mean, who cares if an RB overtakes a Sauber for P13 with 2 laps to go right now, really?), but I think the most compelling reason is that in a low-randomness environment, any swing (like Alpine's) has massive repercussions. The current system means that regular points-scoring teams have every weekend's performance matter, as any opportunity lost is massive, whereas the lower midfield and backfield's weekends only matter, competitively, when they dramatically exceed expectations. Put another way, you're not ranking them on their week-in, week-out performance, against their opponents, but only on their outliers. That is, in itself, a poor way to rank them against each other, but it matters even more if financial gains are attached to it. I'm happy for Alpine to have had their Sao Paulo haul, I truly am, and they deserve to rise in the rankings due to it, but it discredits teams that show up week in, week out. It's just a poor measurement of a team's year, is all, when most of their weekends don't end up being competitively significant, where a hard-fought P12 is worth the same as a DNF or a lowly P19.

    I wonder if i watch the same television as others. In his Qatar interview he clearly was smirking and seemed rather sarcastic. He didnt appear to be genuine. How is it that ppl are so hooked on what he said and believes that he was serious?! He clearly struggles with the W15 in quali but the races this year have shown that he's still quick so I'm so lost at this being milked constantly. I don't see ppl asking if Alonso has lost it and he's been having a ragged ass year, granted he's out performing Stroll, but what top tier racer wouldn't

    KYM bikes aren’t good enough to command the prices they ask. They’re too niche as well, very divisive designs with no basic bikes to bring in young riders. Not surprising.

    Any permanent race director must NOT be British, Australian or Italian. I’d like to see a Scandinavian or Canadian or Japanese race director. Too much of the same old same old.
