Hey, I'm Ben. I'm a designer by trade and an idiot by birth, with obviously no professional training in engineering, automotive mechanics, or software development. I've picked up projects and hobbies involving all three things.
Building an electric car is harder than I thought
This project never ceases to baffle me. Truly a comedy of errors. In this video I’m recapping how I mounted the motor, transmission and battery boxes on the van.
If you’re unaware, I lost roughly half of my footage from this project and I’m slowly cobbling together what’s left of the footage to share the process of building this van from 2021-2024.

I put an Electric Motor in my Kei Van
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 місяці тому
A year ago I put an Electric motor in my Honda Acty Kei Van, I documented the whole process, uploaded a few videos, and then vanished. The hard drive that had all the footage of the build broke, and I lost all my footage. But the van is still here and there's a lot to talk about, and finish. Charging and balancing the Tesla batteries in my EV Conversion
Переглядів 11 тис.Рік тому
Get exclusive behind the scenes on my patreon: patreon.com/OffTrackEngineering How do you set up a charger for a lithium-ion battery pack in an EV conversion? Let’s learn together. The first step doesn’t even have to do with the charger, it’s about the batteries. In this video we’re talking about how to balance lithium-ion batteries, and then how we’re going to charge them. Tools I used in this...

Get exclusive behind-the-scenes on my Patreon: patreon.com/OffTrackEngineering Welcome back to another installment of Project Acte. My 1993 Honda Acty Kei van is being converted to electric. In this episode we're talking Tesla batteries, how I bought them, how I'm planning to contain them, how I'm going to mount them to the van, and then how I'm managing them. These videos take so much time to ...
How I connected an electric motor to my transmission
Переглядів 42 тис.Рік тому
Get exclusive behind-the-scenes and access to all my designs and files on my patreon: patreon.com/OffTrackEngineering When doing an EV conversion, one of the main things you need to figure out is how to actually connect an electric motor to the wheels of your car. This video explores how I solved that for my conversion. If you want to see more of the build follow me on Instagram here: instagram...
Building the worlds first Tesla powered Kei Van
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
Get exclusive behind-the-scenes on my patreon: patreon.com/OffTrackEngineering I'm setting out to build the very first Tesla battery-powered Honda Acty van. The first step is to tear the whole thing apart. #hondaacty #evconversion #tesla #keitruck #engineswap
He made the bestest golf cart EVEAH! Now he can ride it on those non-motorized trails, As long as golf carts in his area can use those trails.
do you need a new transmission or did you use the one that is stock.?
Nice work, project is cool and these videos have been great, thanks!
Excellent video. Brilliant idea to use the crank of the ICE engine ! I'm gonna use that idea. If the motor too lonng, try the Motenergy ME 1616. Probably just right for that van and 1/2 the cost of the AC 50 or Warp 9.
Thanks! The 1616 is less than half the power of the already low powered AC-50. It probably wouldn’t do too well pushing this thing up hill
I never clicked on a video soo fast!! Keep up the good work mann
Thanks dude!!
Impressive battery boxes! You’re inspiring me to build custom boxes on my next build…
I’ve got about a million ideas of how to improve them. They’re honestly pretty rough. I unabashedly tried to make a poor man’s Amp Revolt box, but I’d take a much different approach if I was to do it again.
great progress!
Thanks Frank!
Yeaaaah great progress man!
Dude! What's the latest with the beat?!
@ ahhh it's still at the shop, but I'm hoping to go visit it next week to see what they've been doing. No updates from me until next year, so I'm living vicariously through your videos 😁
Glad to see its not just me brute forcing my way through an EV conversion
More like brute falling my way through.
Stoked for ya to be making progress bud!! I’m hoping to do something similar with my minicab once I get the space to work on it!!
Do it!!
Genuinely so happy to see more videos on this project! So cool!
Thanks for watching!
Finally😭🙏🙏🙏
I know it's been a minute 😅
Now as a 71 year 😂old dude I just wonder why go to all this trouble whilst a way easier method would be to couple the electric motor directly to a suitable ratio differential ? That would be much easier and save a lot of weight same time as well as friction through the gearbox . Just work out the ratio needed , get a small prop shaft connected an Bob's your uncle. Quite sure there will be less Gear WHINE coming from such a conversion as well.
you make me wanna turn my toyota IQ into EV!
Do it!
I assume no AWD any more?
Not right now, I’ve found the van to be a lot quicker just RWD
this is awesome
Keep it up! Next Project will be even more interesting and fast to do as you have most basic things figured out. Greetings from Poland, Worked in FS Electric Vehichle team in my student time :)
Hell yeah!
I started smiling ear to ear when you began driving the van! 😍 Cant wait to hear about all the lessons you learned along the way 🎉
This is very helpful. Thank you for sharing
Reminds me of a time when we were like 12 and some skate footage got lost 😢
Dude we need to unarchive all that footy
Looks great!
aww that sucks, but Im so glad that you his project running and the road. Im so excited to see the furture !
heck yes bro! so hyped to see more of the journey! but also HATE to hear about your hard drive!
Thanks dude! Yeah it's time to get a NAS I guess.
let's gooook bro welcome back !!! I was waiting for this !
This is such a cool project! I'm sorry to hear about your hard drive! I just wanted to say that seeing this update made me really happy, thank you for making it and the original videos despite the setbacks you've had!
Glad you stuck around
Ah Man I'm so sorry about all that footage, that's really heartbreaking. Good to see you back
sorry to hear about the footage but glad you got all of the experience from it. looking forward to more!
Thanks Frank! I'm excited to share some more, and to talk about a few upcoming projects.
Stoked your back, and excited to follow along! RIP your hard drive and the tranny too…sounds like quite the roller coaster! 🙏
Thanks dude! Gotta always expect the unexpected lol
Any updates on this, coworker just bought a cyber truck and it got me back into thinking about EV mini trucks
Just posted!
Where’s your pilot bearing?
Where and what engine used
Didn't know that everyone likes MF DOOM. I guess he's the real Mr Worldwide.
Hi there next time you need to trace a pretty accurate sketch of a part just put a thin smearing of grease all around the housing then gently place on cardboard or paper and firmly press it down and let it dry and you will have a perfect ish outline that you can then draw with a marker pen it's what I do with motorbike engine casings and always works a treat
Thanks for sharing this conversion. I have questions and will message you via instagram.
For tracing exact copy of flat shapes you can put paint on edges then put paper on it you will get exact measurements of the holes and edges.
I've bought a set of centre punches and am planning to punch directly through the bolt holes on the transmission and into the aluminium spacer plate. I hope it works!
Listen hold the carboard against the tranmission and use a ball end hammer to tap out the holes and the flat hammer for the edges
Update?
Can something like this be done for Touareg GP?
A well produced video that only has 1.6k views? that's ridiculous
That would be some scary kei van to play with. 😈⚡ Electric powertrains, especially computerized AC powertrain, are no joke.
Hi, when you and others build an electric car and put the battery packs low to the ground, aren't you worried about going through a deep puddle. If the battery pack isn't 100% waterproof then something bad will most likely happen.
For a channel that has engineering in its name there certainly isnt much engineering going on. Using a hand drill to drill sidewards holes, claiming there are torque "specs" for a prototype motor plate to attach to a motor, using hex headed bolts for said attachment without a washer(s). None of this even mentions the fact that he is taking the path of the most resistance by flipping the transmission onto the cardboard instead of laying the cardboard on the transmission. Not much in the way of work flow in fusion either...so much for taking a head on picture, importing it into f360 then scaling it to size and making the appropriate holes in their location. Its not hard nor does it take any substantial amount of time. As a user of Fusion360 since 2019 I can do something very similar (and have) in very little time. Quite frankly this video could be a case study on exactly how NOT to do things. Was anyone else astonished by the shear amount of extra work created by the guy in the video? So much for working smarter and not harder.
Bruh it wouldn't hurt to be a little nicer. The motor manufacturer probably has torque specs for bolting their motor to things
What does a surf band mean ?
Out of curiosity could you not have just ordered a transmission gasket to use as a template
can't wait for the final result!
super cool!
Can you share the adapter plate pattern?
I'd like the crankshaft as a way to couple the flywheel electric motor. If some machine shop specialized in doing this they might be able to make a business out of it
