Fly Boy - Episode 64 - Paragliding in South Wales
Join me on this beautiful flight from Hay Bluff, South East Wales. I met up with Ali Andrews and we flew a 20km FAI triangle together. It was a perfect day with amazing thermals and clouds! We both had commitments after so it would not have been wise to go XC down-wind but it would have been very easy to fly to Crickhowell if we wanted to.
At the end, (if you are still watching that long) I share a few thoughts and insights from the flight.
Thanks for watching!

Fly Boy - Episode 61 - SIV at 'Rise Paragliding', China!
Переглядів 4833 місяці тому
After flying for over 25 years (I learnt in 1996 when I was 16), I have finally gotten round to doing my first SIV course! Why in China? Well the simple reason is because we are taking the year off to spend 12 months here in China (as my wife is from Tianjin in North China). We are halfway through and due to come back mid-October 24. I have been looking for places to fly, and so far not being v...
Fly Boy - Episode 60 - Paragliding in China!

Fly Boy goes to China! Sorry for the delay in making another video. I had not flown for over 2 months until this day due to my location being unsuitable for flying in the winter plus I was not in contact with any local pilots until recently. We are currently staying in Tianjin, China for approximately one year as my wife (who is Chinese) really wanted to spend a year in China to be near her par...
Fly Boy Episode 59 - Paragliding in strong wind!
Переглядів 1,1 тис.7 місяців тому
Too much wind!!! Nearly got dragged on take off! Then I came back in the afternoon and it had dropped nicely (as the forecast had predicted). There were about 8 pilots in the air which is busy for the Isle of Wight. I was test flying my new "winter wing", which I may also take to China (Advance Iota 2). I am hoping to get some flying and filming on the Beijing mountain range in the spring so wa...
Fly Boy Episode 58 - Cobra Launch
Переглядів 844Рік тому
In this video I demonstrate the 'Cobra' launch technique which I find very useful for strong wind launch situations. It was a great day on the cliffs (as too windy to fly in-land), and a few of us managed to cross the bay to fly to the Needles (before I flew home from Tennyson cliffs)! Thanks for watching!

Join me on the 2023 Dragon Race in South East Wales. I was very blessed to have the opportunity to fly the new BGD Lynx 2 and I give my honest opinion of this wing towards the end of the video. Many thanks to Ali Andrews (Race Organiser) for hosting and for letting me fly the Lynx 2. Well done to everyone who completed the task (not me)! 1. Tom Hodgkin 2. John Westall and Steve Ashley 4. My friend Kevin and I attempt the X-Eryri in North Wales. We didn't do very well but we had had great adventure and learnt loads. (They say that you learn more from your failures than your successes)! Thanks for watching and I hope your not disappointed by the lack of flying in this video!

Join me on a fly on the Freshwater cliffs. I was flying my friend Nick's BGD Lynx (which is for sale). I attempted to cross over the bay to Tennyson cliffs, but unfortunately, I got too low for comfort and decided to land at the Dandelion Cafe grounds rather than risk landing in the sea! Many thanks to Marcin for giving me a lift back to the van from Freshwater Bay! Thanks for watching!

Fly Boy Episode 50 - Air Design Volt 4 Review
Boy 🤣 Beautiful location.
Looking Good 👍
Great vid..
I stopped watching after the 4th Yah Hoo !! - sorry
Awesome, looks dramatic. I'm planning to bag some coastal runs around the UK this winter.
Love the video and the channel. Was a pleasure to meet you.
I met rob and rustin when I visited. Great guys and a sweet site.
What a beautiful place to fly! Thumbs up on the video!
Brilliant. I've watched most of your videos and this is my favourite so far.
Enjoyed this, cheers
Sweeeet… the eagle has returned from china took off and then landed!!😬
Cool video. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍
Wow 🤩 epic flight ✈️ welcome back flyboy
He’s BACK 💪💪💪
Good to see you back John!👍
Great video, thanks! I now know I can use my wing there for paragliding 🪂 I was wondering do you know about regulations for paramotor near Shenzhen?🍀
Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for your comment. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the regulations in China, but I wish you all the best. Happy flying!
Great video. Let's fly together in the future
very nice, i'm french and learning paragliding in haining (not far from shanghai), 海宁区 大尖山. 300 meters high mountain. :)
That's amazing! Good to hear from you and all the best with your paragliding training. You're going to absolutely love it! So many adventures ahead of you
Really great video. Interesting to see another part of the world
Thanks Ben
Good video, thanks John. Annecy top-to-bottom is 800m as well.
Thanks mark
Who’s the instructor?
Tim. Sorry I don't know his second name
The instructor is called Tim but I'm afraid I don't know his second name. He's an acro pilot and a brilliant instructor and also good friends with Theo de Blick who is his teacher I believe
Ahhh I want to go How much is it? How come I dont see it on their website?
I will see if I can cut the website address to here

I have cut and pasted the website of the rise paragliding school account
It costs 6,980 RNB. Which is approximately £780 . But it's also 50rnb per trip up the mountain.
Great video. I myself am from the States but I have been living here in China since the late 90s. I learned paragliding here in China from a local instructor here who can’t speak a word of English but my Chinese is passable enough. I live in Beijing which is not far from Tianjin so maybe we will meet up flying somewhere in China.
Wow that's amazing! Yes that would be fantastic if we could meet up
@@johnrudge777 Sorry I had not checked my messages properly. I had expected a notification if I'd gotten an answer. None came. I'm currently in London. I'll be flying with our Chinese paragliding club all next month in Europe and back in Beijing at the very end of July. I just sent you a message through FB. We have a mutual friend here in the UK.
Thank for the film. Safe launch and safe land.
His name is Jack Pimblett 😎
Thanks 👍
I'm Chinese. I learned in California but i really want to go back to fly 😍😍😍 I heard it's even more popular than in America :-)
Awesome! 😎 Yes, there are some very good places here in China I'm told where you can fly more than 100 km.
Doesn't look a very good site John. In Europe something like this would only really be used as a launch pad for an XC.
I agree Mark and to be honest I also feel it's a bit dangerous. Fact that you can't go cross- country is also a big shame
I don't feel safe with your flying. Eg here at 5:40 you can have a life-changing accident in the lee of the slope ahead. Here you have to fly over the valley a little earlier and then back to the slope of the quarry.
Yes I was very aware of the dangers of that cliff in front and also the ridge to my left which is why I was keeping slightly to the left of the spine that runs down from takeoff because of the cliff coming up in front where I imagined the rotor could be. It does seem a bit of a tricky sight and also potentially very dangerous. I do agree with you. I was aware of this and trying to fly in the safest place as possible. But unfortunately because there was not much left I was forced to go low.
Hi John that looked quite a scary paraglide. Too many obstacles 😮. But well navigated 😅!
Thanks James!
The instructor Pang keeps the longest flight in China, about 388km
Awesome! He is a really nice guy as well
Yeeeees😊FB back on air in both ways and the first British 🇬🇧 to fly that site …. Plant ur flag Booooy
Thank you buddy!
Convenience of having a lightweight pack, love the video
Wow just epic
Absolutely love this x would grabbing the C lines Be a better way to arresting the wing if you’re getting dragged
Yes, you are absolutely right in most cases but when I'm going backwards I prefer to do a full frontal and collapse the A's because as the wing is diving down it gives you time (milliseconds ) to turn around and get ready to pull the brakes or the back risers before it re-inflates but as you can see from my video, I did not pull the A's hard enough which cause the wing to reinflate before it got to the ground. The reason I like the full frontal technique is because as the wing dives at the ground it increases speed. But when you pull the back risers, you are also in vulnerable position if it's very windy because you are still slowing the wing down before it stalls. But the main thing to remember is that this technique must be practised because it can go wrong if you do what I did and don't pull the A's hard enough. So as you have said, if in doubt, just to pull the back risers.
Thanks for the good video! I don't quite understand why turning one way would be less degrees than the other. If you've laid out the wing into the wind, and your back is facing the wind, then the turn should be identical both ways. I practice turning both ways, primarily because while ground handling, it happens that I put the wing down "the wrong way". But for a real launch, I always setup the same way, and always turn the same way. For me this gives an additional security, it becomes muscle memory, and one less thing that can go wrong during this very critical phase of starting to fly. I've seen so many pilots, even very experienced ones, take off twisted, because they thought they were setup one way, and ended up turning the other way. And if you're a beginner, already nervous on the take-off, having still challenges on ground handling your wing, it's an additional risk imo.
Thanks for your comment. So basically on that day the wind was about 35° off to the right hand side as it was coming from the southwest. So you are absolutely right. If the wind is straight up the hill then the turn direction will be the same both ways. But on that particular day, even though the wind was very light, it was slightly coming from the right.
Awesome... how many kms/hr? looks pretty windy...
Actually it was not as windy as I thought it was. I think it was only gusting up to about 25 km an hour. Max at the beginning but then the wind dropped off to probably about 18 to 20
This guy ain’t just the king 👑 of washing machines… he’s the paragliding GURU 🙌🙌🙌
Lol😂
You're very thorough John, great fly 😊. What about Richard? Did he get enough height to get back safely? Looked like he may have landed on the helicopter pad at the Needles!
Yes he flew back safely 😄
What a dream to get to fly home. Thanks for the cobra intro
Love it! Went from "maybe too strong to fly" to a mini xc with super cute homecoming committee, nice one
That's a beautiful island!
Great video
Hey John, it looks like it's worth going to that little town just for the pizza 🍕😋
Yes, it's worth going there just for the pizza 🍕 in that place
Thats great John. A very nice week and a great group of pilots.
If I had the opportunity to go to South America again, I would go to Spain once, it was so beautiful. As a kid I loved football my childhood dreams I want to go to Barcelona, a football Camp Nou field once in my life, thanks for sharing the video. Have fun and be safe.🎉😊
cool! what would be a good ultralight harness for ground handling?
For Ground handling. I would definitely recommend an old training harness, something with a small seatboard and with back protection and nice comfortable straps. Otherwise it will be uncomfortable in a lot of these lightweight harnesses
@@johnrudge777 the thing is I'm nomadic and wondering if I switch to pod harness what I will ground handle with 😅 I can't travel with 2 harness
Great video and thanks for the Lynx2 review.
Good effort John and so good to spend another weekend flying with you.
Thanks Will. A real pleasure to meet you and all the other pilots and looking forward to seeing you all again sometime
You worry too much John😉
Yes, I think you're right Tim. I was overthinking it I believe. And afterwards. I realised that it would have been fine to fly down but I think I was intimidated by the sheer size of the clouds and also not used to flying with such big mountains. I think. Made me a little bit nervous
Great video! Good flying with you on the Pandy ridge, I was flying the lime/blue Alpina 😀
Oh that was who it was cool. Thanks and it was fun flying with you too. Thank you for showing me where the thermals were
