#DIY Toning Cyanotypes With Rosemary
In this video, I demonstrate how to tone cyanotypes with rosemary.
To make bleach:
Dissolve 50g of Soda Crystals to 1 Litre of Water. Cyanotype will begin to fade quickly when put into the solution. Do not let the cyanotype fade completely, just let it fade partially.
To make toner:
50g rosemary (leaves and bark) to 1 litre of water, stewed for 30 minutes. Leave to cool and strain before putting in your tray. Leave cyanotype in toner for as long as desired, through 30-50 minutes will leave you with results you see here.
You can see how to make a cyanotype, on my simple cyanotype process video here: ua-cam.com/video/LmEob0uEzto/v-deo.html
This simple cyanotype video was made in collaboration with Dr Leah-Nani Alconcel.

    Amazing! I'm so glad Sam posted a link to your video!!! Ive never seen this before! I really appreciate your note regarding safety! I don't have a very big budget at all, what would you recommend the very minimum GSM paper weight? 😂 I have been using 80gsm and about 30% of the time it falls apart before i get to the drying stage 🤦‍♂️ there's no way I can afford expensive cotton rag paper! I have made quite a bit of paper in the past but it's very time consuming!

    • @MelanieKing
      @MelanieKing Рік тому

      Paper is really important, if it is too alkaline - the cyanotype won't work with to begin with. GSM is important if you are going to tone because it might disintegrate in too many baths. This works okay www.cassart.co.uk/fabriano-accademia-artist-pack-160gsm-150-sheets-a4--c/ but I recommend the higher GSM version.

    Hi Melanie, thanks for the video :) I am trying a few experiments from different recipes and methods with serrated wrack in Dublin, so far I have only managed nearly black and nearly clear negs so Im searching for my middle ground! It seems the key differences in all the info I can find is that different people use very different times/temps/agitations with roughly similar recipes, and I suppose its just finally finding what way works for me if I persevere! I just have a question about agitation here, do you do an initial constant agitation/inversion cycle for 30 sec or 1 minute of do you pour and just let it sit till it hits the 2 minute mark? Also when you say invert every 2 minutes did you just invert once or for ten seconds each time? Thank you <3 Karen

    • @MelanieKing
      @MelanieKing Рік тому

      @@sharonbruster3067 Hello. Are you mixing the salt concentration to the highest possible dissolving point? As the salt is "stabilising" the exposed silver in the print, rather than removing the silver completely - there is a risk that it can still darken, but in stable conditions (not humid, stable temperature) it should be less likely. The prints would also need to be immersed for 24-48 hours. Maybe try "fixing" them for 48 hours?

      @@MelanieKing Thank you! When developer and fixer are mixed together to become chemically neutral, is the result less harmful to breath in etc? And actually, just today, I was thinking of letting the chemicals evaporate so it's good to know that this is an acceptable practice. If I put the developer / fixer mix into a container and leave it outside out in the sun to evaporate, I guess I could put netting or something similar over the opening to prevent animals from drinking it.

      @@anzaeriaI know this is an old comment, but I did also read that camera stores that process film sometimes take used fixer for silver reclaim.

    Out of curiosity, if you were holding a sheet of photographic paper in complete darkness with no safe light, would the emulsion side feel extra smooth as well as sticky? Even if it was matte paper, would the emulsion side feel smoother than the other side?

      Yes, if you lick your finger and touch the corner of the paper - the emulsion side should feel sticky.

    Great video and explanation. My one and only image taken with a pinhole camera turned out completely black. Obviously, too much light! I had converted a tissue box to a pinhole camera. After the exposure, I was holding it so tight (to keep it light proof) that I destroyed it. I would definitely build a sturdier pinhole camera next time!

    Seriously cool Ms. King. Thanks for summing up what must have been a long process so eloquently. I shall have to go back and watch the other series videos. 👍

    Have you tried this as a paper developer? If it works I’d imagine it wouldn’t stain as much as caffenol does

    Are the soda crystals the same as baking soda? Thank you :)

      No, I think it's slightly different. You need bicarbonate of soda

      I have been using the coffee, bicarbonate of soda and vitamin C but my images are coming out pink. I'm using direct positive paper. What am I doing wrong?

      @@MelanieKing Hopopop ! (that means : Stop ! in french...) It's not bicarbonate of soda (which is the same as baking soda) but sodium carbonate Na2Co3. You use crystals soda so it's decahydrated sodium cartbonate. Well, that said, excellent video ! For now I just develop the films in caffenol but I'm going to try paper and your video will help.
