Awesome, nice to see people doing original analogue photography and science. Thank you for sharing. 🙂

@@MelanieKing I was taught to dissolve the products a little at a time and not all at once and above all the thermometer should be used to measure the temperature and not to mix the chemicals, a greeting.

A very interesting process and viable alternative to conventional developer. Out of curiosity, would you know of any environmental ways of disposing of conventional developer in a safe manner? I don't want to simply pour it down the drain.

So the most up to date information that I know is to :
      A) Reclaim silver from fixer. (Mentioned in another video)
      B) Mix exhausted developer and fixer together to make a chemically neutral substance.
      C) Leave to evaporate.
      D) Scrape out sludge and put in landfill.
Still not perfect but better than throwing down the drain. Info from the Sustainable Darkroom network.

@@MelanieKing Thank you! When developer and fixer are mixed together to become chemically neutral, is the result less harmful to breath in etc? And actually, just today, I was thinking of letting the chemicals evaporate so it's good to know that this is an acceptable practice. If I put the developer / fixer mix into a container and leave it outside out in the sun to evaporate, I guess I could put netting or something similar over the opening to prevent animals from drinking it.

@@anzaeriaI know this is an old comment, but I did also read that camera stores that process film sometimes take used fixer for silver reclaim.

Melani I took the liberty of writing to you because it is important to slowly dissolve the products to prepare Caffenol and have a good development, especially if it is a video for schools and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Joking aside, your videos are interesting, however I will check them to see if there are any inaccuracies and to be able to correct you. Good luck and good luck. Lorenzo

Are the soda crystals the same as baking soda?
    Thank you :)

    • @MelanieKing
      @MelanieKing  Рік тому +2

No, I think it's slightly different. You need bicarbonate of soda

I have been using the coffee, bicarbonate of soda and vitamin C but my images are coming out pink. I'm using direct positive paper. What am I doing wrong?

@@MelanieKing Hopopop ! (that means : Stop ! in french...) It's not bicarbonate of soda (which is the same as baking soda) but sodium carbonate Na2Co3. You use crystals soda so it's decahydrated sodium cartbonate. Well, that said, excellent video ! For now I just develop the films in caffenol but I'm going to try paper and your video will help.

Sorry to note the superficiality and approximation of this video, supported by an important university institute with the supervision of one of its esteemed collaborators.

Did you also note that this video was originally made for school children connected to the university? I decided to put it online so that other people could benefit from the tutorial, it wasn't originally made for youtube...

      Good morning.
Even my videos intended for school children are made in a very simple way and without any refinement, but I generally avoid putting information that can disorient or mislead, or lead to disappointing results.

@@gabrielecoassin1020 I don't understand what you are complaining about, as you are writing in a very convoluted way.
Is the information wrong in the video? If so, say what that is.
From your original comment, I assumed you were complaining about the connection to the University of Birmingham.
