- In this video I am demonstrating the natural chemigram process, using plant based developers.
This video is supported by AIR Gallery Altrincham and my Patreon supporters. www.airgallery...
Chemigrams are photographic prints that are created by applying a range of chemicals onto the surface of the photographic paper. We will be using household items and food . We will also make a caffenol paper developer.
You will need:
Black and white photographic paper. Expired/fogged paper works best!
Trays, jugs, measuring scales.
Soda crystals, vitamin c tablets and coffee OR expired photographic developer.
Fixative or Salt and Water.
Food items to apply to the surface of the photographic paper: Tumeric, Honey, Syrup, Oil, Wine, Natural Dye etc.
Stickers / tape / stencils.
Access to water (sink, tap, drain etc).
Gloves, if you have them (to protect your skin). I use a pair of old washing up gloves.
Recipe
Mix 40g soda crystals with 500ml water
Add 10g vitamin c
Add 17g coffee
Top up to 1000ml
SALT FIXER
Salt has a dissolving limit of 359g per litre. So you can mix up:
350g salt
1000ml water
You will then need to leave the paper to fix for 12-24 hours

Brilliant effects and great use of "expired" paper and fixer! 👍
I love the circles they remind me of planets 😊
Thanks! They do look quite planetary
I really enjoyed watching the process, and look forward to trying it myself
Thank you Joanne.
Excellent demonstration Melanie. Is it ok if the Vit C has other ingredients in it? Can you please touch on what you mean by expired standard fixer vs new fixer (for the non-photo peeps) during the workshop?
It would be better to have pure vitamin-c, but I have used "tropical flavour" fizzy vitamin-c tablets before and they have worked well. Fixer loses potency over time, and is less effective for standard black and white photography where you want to achieve a perfect print. However, in the interest of using up chemicals instead of wasting them, old fixer can be used for chemigrams as it any inconsistencies will add to the patina of the chemigram!
Lovely. Just wondering how durable chemigrams are? What is the approximate longevity?
If you use fixer to immerse the whole print when you have finished them, they are just as durable as any other photographic print.
what do you mean by "top this up to a litter" if the mix has already the quantities required? with what ingredient I top up? water? sorry I got confused.
Oh thanks for pointing this out. "Top this up to 1 litre of water"
Could you maybe post the measurements in the description box? I find it hard to follow it from the video.
Good point! I have just added the recipe for the caffenol.
