Really? Messmer would likely beat Malenia even if it weren't for the better skill factor. Flames are still a thing and Messmer can do some attacks which Malenia likely cannot dodge like the serpents, which would also bring him safe from some of Malenia's most powerful attacks. Messmer also was pretty much feared by queen Marika that she literally sent him in the land of shadows to be a Radagon's counterpart, who was presumably much stronger than Malenia as wielder of the Elden Lord title, something Malenia seems to put herself under due to the words she says at the end of the battle: "your strength.. extraordinary.. a mark of a true lord". (Extra: Messmer's theme also hints at some of Radagon's, hinting that Messmer possibly is an empyrian too)

Actually if you run up on her in the beginning you can use the entire ash of war because her hyper armor brakes and she gets. Now this doesn't happen all the time it's a 80/100 but it gets rid of like half her health

I think the gravetender having the dogs is meant to be foreshadowing. Sort of a clever nod to what’s coming. It doesn’t make the fight better but perhaps makes the experience better in terms of theme. And the big guy reminds me of sif which is never a bad thing.

I just finished Malenia on RL1 and I think, she is much, much worse than how you are describing her. RL1 made clear, that Waterfowl is far from the only issue of this fight. The amount of combos she can chain is ridiculous. Often, the never-ending strikes and dashes with their occasional room for one or two hits led to a fun back and forth, but some attacks and follow-ups caused the exact opposite. There have been attempts where she chained the same attacks without damage windows four times in a row. Especially the follow-up that leads to the overhead ground strike often just comes out of nowhere and punishes a good prior dodge with an instant hit/death instead of a deserved damage window you would get if she did literally anything else. With a fast weapon and light roll, I found a lot of damage windows, but that follow-up in particular made them a gamble if you havent figured out into which exact direction you need to roll on the prior attack to not get hit by it. Some attacks also seems or actually are far to similar, but have different follow-ups with different timings, that require an entirely different dodging direction or delay. I started appreciating Waterfowl dance more and more as well, find it very satisfying to dodge now and probably wouldnt mind it anymore, if there wasnt the bumpy arena, input read and bad camera. The uneven ground (not just for waterfowl) often influenced the range of my dodges, leading to deaths I wouldnt have had in the middle. Doing the close range runaround dodge was pretty much impossible to do in time when she was standing higher than me. The input read kept catching me too far away to do the close range dodge and too close to run away from the first flurry. There might be dodge methods for these situations as well, but from what I could find, none that are consistent. The camera just made it incredibly hard to determine my distance to the flying Malenia and therefore, how I needed to circle around her to break her tracking. I definitely agree with your point on the wings. Not only did they make it hard to see the beginning of a combo, but also close to impossible to identify the follow-up, which forced a more passive approach in the 2nd phase and thereby cost a lot of otherwise free damage windows. Transparency was a problem of the whole fight imo. Some dodges are anything but intuitive, because she continues waving her sword around, when you are already out of her sight, but in angles that still hit you behind/next to her with quite some distance. It made the entire fight more memory- than skill-dependent - you just had to know, which directions would keep you save from the follow-up, which follow-ups you couldnt strafe, even if it seems more than save and which attacks leave enough of a downtime to punish, before another one follows. Another thing: spacing. Whether you can dodge waterfowl can heavily depend on where you and Malenia are in the arena. If she is at the edge, you could forget a close range dodge. If we had control over the spacing, it would be fine, but we barely have, unless we want to spend two minutes watching her edge-walk to us. She pretty much dashes where she wants. Overall, all these things make the fight veeeeery RNG-dependent. I did a lot of training before actually attempting the fight as well. I wouldnt say Ive improved at anything during the last few hours of real attempts (actually the opposite, I got tired af), yet it still took that much longer. (What might have dampened my experience was my claim to do all bosses including Malenia hitless. Even without the bubble tear Ive barely survived a lot of hits, but ended these attempts.)
