Musical Mama - Ukulele for Beginners
United States
Приєднався 8 бер 2016
Hi, I’m Melissa, an ukulele teacher living in Silicon Valley. After dabbling with a variety of instruments, I fell in love with the size, sound, and accessibility of the ukulele on a trip to the Big Island. Music is one of the most primitive and natural forms of human expression, yet many of us have the impression that making music has to be complicated and difficult. Through my lessons, books, and tutorials, I do my best to demystify and simplify the process of learning to play ukulele so that you can experience the joy that comes from making music.

"Trouble in Mind" is one of the classic American folk songs included in my latest book, Americana. Check it out at www.musicalmama.com/americana-book ! It's a beautiful blues song that’s excellent for helping us develop our singing and strumming skills. When a song uses the eight-bar blues, it uses a familiar and specific chord pattern that repeats every eight bars (aka measures), using the 1, ...

Thank you for explaining 12/8 time signature.
You're welcome! Happy music-making!
Excellent description!! Thank you so much for helping me understand this time signature. I'm playing Gesu Bambino for Christmas in a saxophone trio.
Wow, I bet that will sound great!
Quite helpful, thanks for sharing.
I'm glad this was helpful to you!
@@MusicalMama you have a very good teaching style!
Many thanks.. this is a great video for beginners as its so easy to follow with clear lyrics and chords.. helped me a lot..
Wonderful, so glad you found it helpful!
This is excellent. I can't thank you enough!
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Amazing lesson! You did an amazing work simplifying 12/8 time signature for easy understanding.
That's very kind, thanks for watching!
@MusicalMama It's a pleasure!
Absolutely beautiful song and your tutorial is so well done, thank you so much! 🔨
Oh my goodness, thank you!
Thank you so much for this. You have no idea how much this helped me!
Thank you for commenting, I'm so happy to hear this!
This is my first ukelele song! Thank you
How exciting! If you're looking for a quick-start guide, check out my free Ukulele Basics guide: www.musicalmama.com/basics . Happy strumming!
Thank you for this video! I recently struggled to transcribe a song I heard on UA-cam, for which there is no sheet music. I thought it was in 4/4 time with triplets on each beat -- now I know I should have written it in 12/8 time!!!!
I'm so glad this video was helpful to you!
Thank you
‘Sea of love’ oldies song is in this time. Thank you for posting this.
This hurts my brain but im getting there thank you so much
Haha, relatable! The first half of the strum is the easier half, and is a great strum all on it's own. Perhaps you'd like to spend some time playing that while you work your way up to Island Strum? Here's a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/7dwq813SOR0/v-deo.html Happy strumming!
what would you suggest for a new Tenor Ukulele with a 100$ budget?
Hello, my favorite entry-level ukes are by Ohana, and a quick search on Amazon turns up several options by a variety of brands for <$100. The best way to learn what you like in an instrument is to just start playing. So you'll do best if you consider your first uke your "starter" uke, and if you stick with it, you'll develop a sense of what works for you and you can upgrade from there. I hope this helps. Happy strumming!
unclesr
not ckear hiw you tap 1234 to what you are singing... Winny the Pooh is that 1 or 1234
I'm half Irish and I like to call 12/8 an Irish 4. It's conducting 4/4 while drunk which results in a slight lag. Also, a lot of traditional Irish and Scottish songs use this time signature
It works great on Banjolele too
😢 this is sad
Great video ❤ I'm wondering why 12/8 is not just slow 4/4 🤔
I think I need to make a video about this! Stay tuned...
Very, very helpful. Thank you.
I'm so glad to hear that. Happy strumming!
Listen to Swim by Bush. That used to freak me out. Had so much trouble counting it.
Thank you very much; after years of playing blues a musical mystery solved for me!
How exciting! A new musical achievement has been unlocked! 🏆
Right on. Thanks!
Great description. I would also recommend, "Get Back" by The Beatles to catch the beat...
Hi! Thanks for the great and clear lessons! I find it really difficult to "follow the rhythm" and also to sing while playing. Do you have any suggestions or tricks to help me get better at these things? Thanks!
That's a great question! It's a lot to manage-- chord changes, strumming, remembering the lyrics, singing, trying to keep an even beat, etc! I think it's easiest to incorporate singing when you're playing a one-chord song and play slowly. Once you're able to do a basic strum, then you can work your way up to two- and three-chord songs. If that's still too much, practice each component on its own, then try putting the pieces together. Here are some links that might help: Learn to play your first song: ua-cam.com/video/V7Vz-iPtybc/v-deo.html My favorite one chord song: ua-cam.com/video/yrdcEWJSaic/v-deo.html Two and three-chord song tutorials: www.musicalmama.com/two-and-three-chord-songs I hope this helps! Happy singing!

Omg I love your watermelon uke!
Thanks!
thank you very much 🙏
Super! Great job on an easy but fun song. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
HA. I was just looking to play this song in church and noticed it in your book. Your videos and book are an excellent complement for teaching my six year old. Hey so I wanted to point something out, as I've been teaching my daughter basic music and feel like she just made a breakthrough. I don't think this would work work for this particular tune since hitting the D chord would be too big of a stretch for little hands, but I have her tuned to open G, GCEG or a relative step up to A, most of the time. This allows a young student to play the basic I-IV-V tune with only 2-finger chords for C and D. Simplifying the fret board was a great jumping off point for a brand new music student to play all sorts of songs by remembering 2 very easy to play positions. Maybe she was just gaining momentum but it really has been a revelation in her playing.
How wonderful! Nothing that makes me happier than hearing about parents making music with their kids, so thank you so much for sharing. And I think teaching is often just as beneficial for the teacher as it is for the student, would you agree? Happy strumming to you both!
Lovely tutorial to follow! I could catch on pretty quickly and just have to practice to get faster now. The only problem is when i pluck with the index finger i cant stand the feeling of the string on my nail (although strumming is fine) Would plucking with the pad be possible and also smooth? It seems much more comfortable for me
Thank you! Yes, it is a funny sensation to get used to, isn't it? You can experiment with strumming other ways, but I'd encourage you to keep trying to strum with your nail. Sometimes applying a layer of nail polish (clear or otherwise) to the fingernail can help it feel less strange. You can also consider replacing your strings for a set of softer ones. I hope that helps. Good luck to you!
UR HOT
A big thank you.
You're welcome!
Thanks for posting. I needed an uplifting song to end my open mic songs that include a funeral, Hank Williams song and a burial song.
Oh, gosh, I'm so sorry for your loss! "I'll Fly Away" is a song that helps in times of mourning-you can see my play-along for it at ua-cam.com/video/VcQNs16J5K4/v-deo.html and download the chords and lyrics at drive.google.com/file/d/15cnVBA-ObhAhoNmKxpqU4ehZaAkzjXok/view?usp=sharing . Sending good thoughts your way.
Keep on the sunny side. Really!
Ha!
Thank you so much! this was very helpfull ♥
I'm so glad!
this was genuinely so helpful, as i needed to use this information for a new series i'm making!
I'm so glad to hear that! Happy creating!
I'm a flautist and omg fear string instruments. Thanks for your awesome strumming tips
Aww, thanks! You can do it! I promise the ukulele really isn't that scary (and this is coming from someone who find wind instruments intimidating, ha!)
Awesome book, so was the first book, “Let’s Play”. Melissa you are the best Ukulele teacher that I have used. Keep the videos coming, good work!
Wow, that's so kind of you to say! Thank you!
A very pretty song to sing and play. A big thank you.
Thank you!
I was happily surprised to see this song in my feed. Now I'll go back and review some of your other videos I enjoyed. A big thank you.
Always nice to learn I'm part of a happy surprise! Thanks for your comment, and thanks for watching!
Haven't seen your channel on my feed for a long time. I love this song, Brad Leftwich and the Hogwire String Band have a great version of it. I played guitar and ukulele growing up but put music down for a long time. A few years ago I saw O Brother Where Art Thou and thought to myself, "why don't I know how to play all those great American folk songs?" I stumbled on your channel, figured out clawhammer ukulele, picked up a banjo and I've been playing every day since. Now I perform in church, the farmers' market, and where ever I can share traditional folk music. I hope your channel is as important of a step for my children's musical journey as it was for mine. What you're doing is important to our culture. I'll place an order for your song book.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and kind words. It's hard to know how my videos are being received unless someone takes the time to comment, and you truly made my day. I'm so happy to hear that you're performing and sharing music! Thank you for your order as well-I will ship your book out tomorrow. And if you like the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, you’re probably familiar with the next video I'll be sharing! 🤭
Great explanation. First time playing a song on bass with 12/*. VARIATION IN BLUE , Jacob de Hahn. Thank you !!!
How exciting! So glad this video was helpful for you!
Excellent videos. I have a question though. Would a slowed down 6/8 not be the same as 3/4 and the sped up 3/4 be a 6/8?
Thanks! This is a common thing to wonder about, but time signature and tempo are completely separate. If you're exploring both concepts, a metronome is a valuable tool to play with! I have one similar to this model (affiliate link): amzn.to/3VQDQnh . Another way to practice is to play along with practice tracks-I've posted practice tracks/videos for 4/4 time... maybe I can create some for 3/4 and 6/8 time. 🤔
Awesome! I bet it would sound great in clawhammer style.
It does! If you're looking for more songs to try clawhammer with, check out my Americana collection-learn more about the book at www.musicalmama.com/americana-book and find all of the play-along videos at www.musicalmama.com/americana . "This Train is Bound for Glory" shares a melody with "The Crawdad Song," so that might be a good one to try next. "Bury Me Beneath the Willow," "Wildwood Flower," and almost all of the other songs in the book also work well with clawhammer. Happy strumming!
@@MusicalMama Thank you so much. I’m trying to preserve old time music.
How wonderful!
@@MusicalMamaI just ordered the Americana Book. Hopefully I can adopt the clawhammer style to the songs. I purchased Deerings’ banjo ukulele a few weeks ago so now I’m searching for appropriate songs and trying to learn different strumming and picking styles that work well with banjoeles and such.
Thank you for your order! I will ship it out tomorrow. Let me know what songs you try clawhammer with!
Awesome!
Thank you!
Awesome! Received my banjo 🪕 ukulele last week. I’ll give this a try. Thx!
How exciting! Happy strumming!
Wish I could see your right hand a bit more.😊
Sorry!
Why do you not put chords up? Thanks
Hello! I'm confused by your question, because I do show the chords. Please see the video description to jump ahead to specific parts of the video.
Remember boys everything can be 4/4 if u count wrong enough
