PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR NEW MUSICIANS
Know Why You're Doing This - 0:38
Why do you want to play the ukulele? Being mindful of your reasons for playing will help you make and achieve goals more purposefully.
Process Your Musical Past - 1:26
Before you spend too much time with your ukulele, take some time to reflect on your relationship with music up to this point in your life, especially if you took music lessons as a kid.
Establish the Habit - 2:39
Plan for the future, because creating and sticking to a new habit is hard! Let's get realistic, practical, and specific- where and when will you play? How often will you play?
Praise Yourself - 6:01
Become your own biggest fan. Congratulate yourself every time you pick up your ukulele. Praise yourself for every little uke-related thing you can think of so that you can build momentum and develop a positive outlook on your musical future.
Assemble a Support Team - 6:52
Who in your life will be your cheerleader as you embark on this new adventure? Involve your friends and family and let them know how they can support you in your new endeavor.
I started playing at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 when I was working from home. I took a brief time away from playing when I went back to work in 2021. Now I am finally retired so I can donate the time necessary to learning and enjoying playing. I originally was a trumpet player in elementary school through High school then sort of gave it up. At that time I was quite immature and was always distracted by having fun with friends and girls so never devoted the time I needed to become even good at the Trumpet. That has always bothered me. I now have the time and desire to get back to music making. I saw my Uk in a little thrift shop and decided I really wanted to become proficient at it just for myself.
I stumbled across your uTube channel when my wife asked if I could play crawdad hole. I really believe you can help me be a better UK player. Keep up the good work.
How wonderful, I hope you're enjoying playing! If you like The Crawdad Song, you might want to check out my tutorial for This Train is Bound for Glory, as it has the very same melody (and chord changes). You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/kckSNLDa1H0/v-deo.html Happy strumming!
Great video!I think praising yourself is a very important point!
Thanks so much!
Have had a Kala ukelele for 2 weeks. Decided in January of this year that I would buy one and learn to play if I made it to Easter without pulling my hair out. Am in the process of learning to pick it up and get it in tune and get basic chords down pat. So far, so good.
That's terrific! If you're looking for more songs to help you practice those chords, you can find all of my video tutorials for one-, two-, and three-chord songs at www.musicalmama.com/two-and-three-chord-songs. Happy strumming!
Thank you - so motivational! I'm on it :)
