Whiskey Blue getting some maintenance and some not so good news. Off to the plane doctor she goes.
It was time for Whiskeys blues 2nd oil change. I noticed some unusually high oil pressure readings on take off coming back back home that went away during cruise flight. I was hoping an oil change would help but that wasn't the case. I will let you know what is wrong with her on the next video

Young Eagle flight number 3... Horrible landing back at KISM

Our 3rd Young Eagle event and 2nd one at Arcadia. I flew 2 teens this day for their first flight experience. I actually have part of my flight with one young adult recorded for you. My landing back at KISM was a horrible bounce from overspeed during the landing. I never claim to be perfect but I will show every landing weather it's good or bad. I was finally able to complete my Flight Review and just in time so I could participate in my 3rd Young Eagles program. My flight took about 2 hours to complete and to be honest I don't get to practice these maneuvers often with my wife in the plane so I took advantage of having my CFI, Nic with me and did each one about 3 or 4 times. Can't thank Nic enough for helping me get this done!! Lookin...

We had planned our first flight to Albert Whitted Field but after we completed our runup, I decided that the winds were outside of my personal minimums for a safe flight so we taxi back and call it a day. I would not worry about oil pressure being near red line until it is fully warmed up to normal oil temperture, then if its running near the red you could have a oil pressure relief valve stuck in the closed position which will cause the oil pressure to be at or go beyound depending on the outside airtemp, the real problem with high oil pressure is it can cause the oil cooler to burst and then you will loose/damage the engine. Its normal for 50hr oil changed unless you fly infrequently. Have them pull and check the oil pressure relief valve and they and test it for proper operation. Should not be to expensive unless they have to repace it but a good cleaning would be a good first start. When the oil and the engine are cold the oil pressure relief valve will open at a preset pressure and bypass oil to keep the pressure from getting to high. It could be worse if you had low oil pressure and it got worse as it warned up, then you could be facing an engine issue but that to could also be caused by something getting stuck open and not letting the oil pressure relief valve fully vlose to maintain the pressure in the green. Also realize that that gauge is probably close to 50-60 years old and another good idea would be to put a calibrated oil pressure gauge on it and go through a good ground run and note what the pressure is really doing. This should be a relativly easy fix if it is the oil pressure relief valve. They (oil pressure relief valve) are normally maintance free and rarely fail completely.
Leak down test...
Do a leak down test, that will give you an idea of how the top end is traveling.
Yeah I believe I'm going to do the compression / leak down test next after the gauge is replaced.
High oil pressure can be caused by high crankcase pressure from blow by from the rings, and that dirty black oil is another sign of excessive blow by from worn rings. Depending on the hours since last O/H, you might get by with a top O/H. But I would plan for the worse and hope for the best. The life you save WILL be your own. Good luck. My O-320 did same thing and it only had 1 cylinder at 55, the rest at 68+- and fresh 50 wt oil would be black in5 hours. Also found cam followers had severe spalling and cam was missing a chunk off lobe tip. Do comp. check with dipstick unscrewed. If it's bouncing around from the blow by your checking account is going to have a stroke.
Thank you for the honest response. It is definitely something that has been in the back of my mind. It was determined that the gauge is bad so I'm waiting for new gauge to come in. The oil analysis test is still pending. I haven't been having any performance problems so hopefully that is a good sign but I guess I'll find out for sure during my annual next month. My checking hasn't read your comment yet so the only thing having a stroke is me right now!! Fingers crossed it was just the gauge and the dark oil is from the plane sitting for 3 years before I bought it 52 hours ago
Light gas engine airplanes burn leaded gas. They are toxic emitters. They should use unleaded gas or not be allowed to fly.
Yep. Same in our 235. During oil changes I put in 10 quarts + 1 pint of camguard. After the oil spreads throughout the engine, I end up with 9 quarts showing on the dipstick. I will keep monitoring the oil levels before each flight and put in an extra quart when it gets to about 7-7.5 quarts. Over our 50 hour oil change interval, we put in 2 supplemental quarts. Which pretty much consumes our 12 quart case.
Do you use oil with no additive or do you use oil with additive and add the cam guard? I use the oil with additive
@j2pov I use Phillips XC 20w50 and camguard.
Poor Whiskey Blue. Hope she gets better soon. You mentioned she’s almost to 4000hrs, what is TBO for that engine?
So the plane hours are at 3991 but my motor has only 1290 on it with a TBO of 2000 recommended by the manufacturer
Damn it my friend. I don’t wish maintenance on anyone. I hope all goes well and quickly. Looking forward to seeing you back soon.
Thank you. I hope to be back in a week or 2. No word on her status yet but I will keep you posted
@@j2povsounds good.
I really start to worry when I have too many good landings in a row...it leaves me thinking what's going to come next. Those are just going to happen every now and then. It's good to see you guys traveling to fly Young Eagles. I'm president of EAA Chapter 807 and sometimes afraid we aren't going to have enough pilots. Needless to say we're very appreciative when pilots fly-in to help out.
I agree with you about to many good landings in a row so if that was my bad landing for awhile then I guess I'll take it. I an just glad that other people admit like I do 😁 I wish we had a chapter at KISM but for now I guess I'll be flying out to help where I can. Thank you for sharing your time with your chapter and the young eagles. It really is a great organization and has great benefits for everyone from children to adults.
@ I can hook you up with the right people to help you form a chapter at KISM. It’s definitely a lot of work but can be rewarding. I am one of the founding members of EAA 807. EAA Chapters are like every other organization out there and you end up with 5% of the people doing 95% of the work. I’m looking forward to spending a bunch more time in FL in the near future. Looks like we’re buying a home in Bradenton FL and I have a feeling Arcadia will end up being our south home airport. We had planned to make Merritt Island our FL location but found an opportunity to good to pass up in Bradenton 4 homes away from some good friends of ours.
@@michaelfagan2403 I would love to start a chapter but unfortunately I don't have the time right now to run a business. This actually seems like a great opportunity for you to do this since you are moving to Florida 🤣 Just kidding.... Congratulations on your purchase in Bradenton. Hopefully we can grab some lunch at a fly in and fly a YE event out of arcadia at some point. Safe travels to you... Fly good Land Gooder
Porpus Puppy? LOL. Still, pretty nice. I love watching you fly. Maybe I will get a chance to left seat with you sometime. Good job.
Luckily it wasn't a horrible bounce and it settled back down right away. IM sure we will get to meet up in Cedar key at some point. Stay safe.
Slow is an understatement. I left while you were positioning to get fuel and you still beat me 😂. The headwind wasn’t that great at any altitude, I just figured I would get up high and enjoy the view. Logan has the right idea about a six seater 👍 My landing back at Kissimmee wasn’t all that great either 🤷♂️
It was a pretty decent headwind on the way home. Hopefully a six seater will be in my future!! IM glad you got to come out and enjoy the privilege's of sharing flights with the kids. Maybe you should start a chapter at KISM??!!
Always enjoy a flight with you and your beautiful wife
@@berniebrown9115 thank you sir. I am glad you enjoyed the horrible landing, lol
Let's keep the FAA happy and not call it a "biennial" flight review anymore. They claim they dropped that to make the requirement clearer and avoid potential confusion. I actually thought they liked to keep us confused. Don't you just love when those sneaky CFI's reach over and pull the power?
I thought there job was to keep us confused on requirements and laws, lol. I probably should have just called it a flight review even though it’s the same thing. It’s been awhile since I have done a loss of power so I’m glad he did that. My wife would have lost her mind if she rode with us on this check ride because of that!
@@j2pov Tina is a pretty good sport in the plane but if she knows anything like that's going to take place she'll stay on the ground too.

When I was at KBOW a few weeks ago the restaurant was not open.
Thank you for the heads up. I was talking to another pilot and he said he was going over there for brunch but I haven't talked to him since so I think I'll call them before heading over
That Bonanza trim is always a trip. Very different from the C-172 wheel. You do realize how fortunate you are to have such a competent co-pilot, right? Beautiful landing. Hehe, you had to do a 180. LOL. I will have to tell you sometime the last time I heard 'no delay'. Great job you guys. You got mildly scolded, but you didn't get a number to call, right? Well, I love you guys, you're getting good at editing too. Godspeed to both of you. I look forward to meeting you. BTW, that was a dragon. Damn helicopters.🤣 Merry Christmas to both of you. Love it, parking is important to be lined up.
Thank you for the compliments. The trim was different to me because the piper I trained in was a wheel trim as well. I'm very lucky to have a co pilot like Justin. She loves aviation as much as I do and she is a big help. She has come a long way with her Co Pilot skills. I hope I never have to hear those words " write this number down"!! Merry Christmas and I am sure we will see you in Cedar Key one day.
Now we are talking! GOODER AND GOODER
Good call. Getthereitis will get you nowhere but dead. Glad to see you safe.
Thank you. Not trying to get dead doing this. I got a pirate festival in Cedar keys one day to go too!!
@@j2pov Yes. Hopefully next November or December. Stay safe.
What is your DMMS? If you don't know you should read about it. Placard with a piece of bright tape on your airspeed indicator. It will keep you from entering a bad situation when low and slow.
Great call, Need people to look and learn from this. Love this video !!! Better to be wishing you are flying when your on the ground than wishing that you are on the ground when you are flying.
Thank you. That’s a great way to put it!
For pilots who don't fly professionally, no-go decisions should be celebrated. Well done.
Thank you. Much Appreciated. This was my first time making it to the runup area and then canceling. Felt a little awkward asking to go back but I thought it was the right thing to do.
@@j2pov If you don't mind a shameless plug, we do talk about this often on the Midlife Pilot Podcast.
@@bensinger297 I Don't mind at all. I hope it helps someone else make the right decision
As a low time commercial rated pilot, I applaud your decision. It’s a tough call once you’re at the end of the runway…nice work!
Thank you. I would rather call it a day then make a critical error. We actually got back out the next day.
Suncoast is one of my favorites. Tony and his staff are amazing and the food is spectacular.
Great decision, when you're not comfortable don't push it. Know your limits and stick to them. Stay safe.
Thank you. Safety has to be the priority as much as I wanted to fly. In the end, I am glad I opted for the safe thing to do.
Good call. Was supposed to fly this morning but when I was doing my planning last night all the sources said it was going to be really windy here and at my destination. So I ended up canceling my rental. Woke up this morning to see that it had completely flipped and I could have gone. It was a bummer but I had to make a decision based off of the data that was given to me. All good though.
Thank you sir. I agree with you. We can only make decisions based off of the information at hand. Earlier in the morning it was nice but that didn't last long. I hope to see you up in the air soon!!
Always good to see y’all and always safe
There is always another day to make a video.
The I love you caught my attention thanks for that
Very nice!! Actually that was me(N670MA ) talking to the tower in the min 2:25 . Didn't knew we were sharing the airspace that day lol!!
It’s a pleasure to “meet” you lol. I always like to play the communications with our tower at KISM to show how helpful they really are. I know as a student it can be intimidating to talk to any tower and our controllers are really professional and courteous. Thanks for sharing airspace with us, lol. If you get a chance to help out as a volunteer for young eagles, please do so. We can always use good pilots!
It's awesome to see you guys supporting the EAA Young Eagles program. I am president of EAA Chapter 807 located at M25 in Mayfield, KY. We host a couple Young Eagles events each year. We are fortunate to have a very generous group of pilots always willing to do individual Young Eagle Flights anytime we need.
I think it’s a privilege to volunteer in this program. You honestly cannot put a price on the looks of those kids faces. I am concerned about getting an aircraft like this, because of the AD. It scares me. 36K per wing to fix. Going to hold off on my purchase.
I understand you concerns about the wing spar. I just had wing spars replaced last year when I had my pre buy inspection done so I will be good for a while. This is why it pays to have a good pre buy inspection done, to find these things. Yes it can be expensive to have it done so I'm not going to BS you about that. Find a plane that fits your mission and that has been cared for and you will have many years of happy flying
Fuel is going to be the least of your worries with that thing. I see you already ran into the old avionics problem. The new wing AD will give you a heart attack. Eddy currently inspection and a limited life on the wing. I see you are in Florida. If the spar has the corrosion crack(s) you are easily looking at 35K per wing. Good luck. Also, “Copy” is not required.
All very good points. The new wing AD was something unforeseen when I bought the plane but I have had both spars replaced 2 years ago because my pre buy inspection found corrosion on the spars. Off I had to dump 35k into each wing, a heart attack would be the next thing to happen after I got that bill for sure. The old avionics was something I knew I would have to replace when I bought it but at least I get to make it what I want.
@@j2pov I know i would always be thinking about that wing now. If another fails….and it will….that AD will tighten up.
Awesome radio calls. 😊
I will be sure to let her know you said that!
