Every day the earth offers nourishment and beauty. My challenge has always been to lift my head up and notice I am surrounded. To remind herself of this truth, my mother made a beautiful needlepoint of these words from the Christian text Philippians: “Whatsoever is lovely think on these things.”_

I was mesmerized by the fish's seemingly effortless movement as it swam in the clear lake water. It appeared relaxed and casual at first, but then I noticed the alertness in its eyes. The combination of fluid motion and mindfulness is truly admirable.

Suddenly, this Barred Owl arrived in a tree near our porch. Its alert stillness drew me into a quiet moment that settled my mind and opened my heart to the wisdom found in stillness.

The pace of a snapping turtle will do it - slow you down, that is. Even though it quickened its steps the closer it got to its destination, this turtle’s whole being spoke what I needed to hear - “Slow down.”

As I began to put words to this scene of Monarch and Fritillary butterflies on the same butterfly bush, I became aware of how my view of the world was shaping my choice. I was uncomfortable reading “competition” or “survival of the fittest” beliefs into the scene. So, I chose something more to my liking and used the word “shared.” Enjoy your choice.

I always thought the great blue heron was more gray-blue than blue-gray. My perspective changed as I watched this heron just as the first rays of morning reached its resting place in a shady marsh.

I began visiting The Great Meadows National Wildlife a few decades ago. Back then, only a few American Lilies were in the wetlands bordering the Concord River. Today the entire surface of the water is covered with blooming lilies, a perfect landing site for this “dancing Blue Heron.

I watched the light filtering through the trees as I leaned against a Swamp Maple tree along the banks of the Concord River. In a few moments, I saw that I was not alone. A few feet from me was a green frog enjoying the same flickering light passing through the trees.

With the lens cover back on my camera, I enjoyed a quiet walk back to my car. Then I saw a red squirrel high in a red pine tree. I decided to watch this small creature rather than capture it with my camera. Standing upwind of this Great Blue Heron, and thinking I was out of sight, I lifted my camera. In that instant, the great bird stopped, faced the wind, and took off for a safer shoreline.
