Prince Edward Island - The Island Walk - Day 39

Too wet to go out or too cold to play ball?… not if you’re a Chonky Trundler on a mission. In an adventure with more than a few wet days, Day 39 stands tall in its soggy strength. It was a 15-kilometer trek along quiet country lanes, a quick shuffle along a busier road, and most notably, 8 kilometers of PEI’s famous red dirt roads-transformed by the downpour into a training ground for Cossack d...

The Island Walk keeps teaching us one thing: rain or shine, the adventure goes on! Today’s leg was a 17km road walk that most definitely tested our spirits. The forecast teased us with a promise of “20% chance of rain and 7mm”-but of course in reality gave unrelenting downpours from the moment we stepped outside. Even our trusty ponchos met their match. Despite the soggy challenge, we passed be...

We know we usually don’t create separate videos for rest days, but here we are again-caught red-handed for the second time! 😂 After two intense days of Chonky Zooming on the e-bikes, we found ourselves with an unexpected extra rest day in the charming town of Souris, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend it. Our wonderful new friends, Sue and Harry, treated us to a day of sightse...

🚴♂️🚴♀️ Day 35 of our Island Walk Canadian Adventure was a record-breaking one for The Chonky Trundlers! We crushed 56.5 km on our second day of e-biking, exploring PEI’s most Easterly point. From the stunningly scenic Confederation Trail, to some quiet, and also a few not-so-quiet roads, we made it to the iconic East Point Lighthouse, where Hedwig braved some serious rotor-bending winds to ca...

Welcome to Day 34 of Island Walk-and today was a Chonky Trundler first! We traded 2 legs for 2 wheels and became… The Chonky Zoomers! With cool, crisp air, glorious sunshine, and jaw-dropping fall foliage, we zipped along the stunning Confederation Trail. It was an easy 38 km, and not only did we catch up on our route, but we might have scored an extra day for sightseeing. So strap on your helm...

Day 33 was perhaps our most unforgettable yet. We made the bold choice to trade a day of our beloved Confederation Trail to explore the breathtaking Greenwich Provincial Park-and let us tell you, it’s worth it. From flocks of swooping geese and calling birds, to stunning beaches, bounding bunnies, and skies so fabulous they felt unreal, this was one of the most magical days of our entire journe...

Welcome to Day 32 of The Island Walk! Today’s video is a little different in that we don’t usually dedicate a separate video to a rest day, but this one was a little special, and we wanted to share that with you. This video features an unforgettable fireside jam session with the brilliant Stan Markus, whose impromptu performance made this rest day one of the most memorable moments of our journe...
Winter Vanlife - UK to Denmark

Welcome to the Chonky Trundlers’ first VanLife adventure! It’s Week 1, and we’re officially hitting the road! Two slightly bewildered humans, one trusty van named Vandalf, and a winter road trip that’s as unpredictable as the British weather. We’re kicking things off with a tour of the UK to visit friends, before braving the North Sea to the Hook of Holland and then heading north through the Ne...

Happy New Year! You've so many adventures in the books, and so many to come. Inspirational.
SO excited about the 2025 plans and the EPIC US trip!! Can’t wait to find out if you’re going to be anywhere near ME! 🥰
Happy New Year! You're out and about and staying active, seeing some beautiful parts of the world, and sharing your adventures. Thank you! Don't worry about what you didn't accomplish; instead, celebrate all the fun things you did. Bravo to you both!!! I'm pleased to be starting 2025 with two months in New Zealand. I plan to hike, kayak, visit many parts of the country, and enjoy the incredible beauty and variety. It's my second time, and I'm still researching and planning. Ready or not, I'm off in late January. Building on Camino lessons, I'm taking just one small carry on. She who travels light, travels best and fastest.
Don't mean to gripe, but the sound level here is very low. My computer and speakers are maxed out and you're still very faint. Are your microphones on? I don't see any lights, so perhaps they aren't. Still, Happy New Year. Don't worry, be happy!
Happy New Year from PEI! 💗 All the best in 2025.
Those red roads are a mess in rain! Curious to know what they look like plowed, in the winter.
Beautiful & Fantastic
Well done again, such troopers😂xxx
Well, good on both of you, for finishing the walk!! Ugly, ugly weather,,,that mud road looked so slippery! The alpacas were funny to see...getting close now!
What a day for a walk 😮 Hats off to you for persevering 👏👏👏 Hard to believe it's all coming to the end soon!!
Gold star 🌟 for not wiping out once on 8 kms of greasy red mud road. Truly impressive! I kept thinking, it's a good thing you weren't on e-bikes anymore.
Boughton River is one of my favourites as well. Love the video and your good spirits despite the soggy weather. And the bloopers got us giggling along with you.
Ah, Campbell's Irving near Dundas and a shelter in Bridgetown. My favorite trail is just being the Fire Hall - the Boughton River Trail which is 9 km. The Little River Trail (your got chocolate delivery) is wonderful in a sunny day!
I’m not sure how you managed to walk (or slide) on the red dirt road for 8 km in the rain and still manage to smile and laugh at the end of your day. Great job!
You two are so cute and so funny😂😂😂😂
We have such a laugh Paula, and hopefully you guys get to share in that too. What you see is what you get. We decided when we started we decided we would just be ourselves. No personas or false stuff. If we don’t like something we will say it. We wouldn’t want to recommend something and someone else suffers. So we will always say it like it is. We don’t monetize the videos either, so no adverts and that’s the plan going forward. We are so glad that wonderful people like you put up with us, so thank you from the bottom of our hearts ❤️
@ I thoroughly enjoy every video. Frequently I wish I were there with you so I can partake in the laughter and the authenticity you guys bring each time!! 😊😊😊
@@ChonkyTrundlers I appreciate your honesty! Some videos you can tell they are promoting a business, and saying what it is really like. The good and the bad, is the best way, though that is tough as in some videos you can tell the people were getting complimentary rooms etc., which could be a conflict. I look forward to a new video, whenever you pot them.
Thank you for bringing us along.
Use to play hide and seek among the chimney stacks when we came here during the summer as kids, when the place was still in ruins. Although it was cold what a great time to film - I bet your made crunchy footsteps on the frosty ground! There use to be a walled garden with a green house - wonder if it's still there? Brought back many memories.
Oh it was wonderful Jerry. How lucky to be there as a child and able to run around there like that ❤️. Glad the videos brought back some happy memories for you!
So glad to see you met Sherri and Helénè too! Lovely people! Very active walkers from Eastern PEI. :-)
Soldiers in the army that is the wonderful inhabitants of PEI ❤️❤️❤️
Chapel Suites - what a handy location!
Super handy Bryson. There’s a good pizza place just up the road and a short walk too 😉😂
Wow, what an ugly day!! But you keep going...it must be a real challenge on days like that..the weather sure has changed, from those very hot days at the beginning.
LOL it so did. From sweating and sweltering in the relentless heat, to shivering and soaked to the bone 😂. But we were ready for it and it was the reason for the bounce bag, we needed three seasons of clothing 😂. A sense of humour also helps a lot 😅
@@ChonkyTrundlers a sense of humour gets us through. lot of problems!
I hope day 39 was a sunnier walk for you both. Love the rainbows and kindness from day 38.
LOL oh OLGal, a spoiler alert for you, it was waaaaay wetter 🤫🌧️🌧️🌧️🐌🌧️🌧️🌧️, but again, it was studded with kindnesses 😂❤️
Great video! Here are two tips to I believe will enhance your Camino to Santiago: First Tip: A Shortcut to the Greenway: From Iglesia de Santiago de Vigo I walked about 3.2 km along Rua de Garcia Barbón, Rua de Sanjurjo Badia then Avenida de Galicia (PO-323) on the east sidewalk. When you reach 142 Avenida de Galicia, look for Restaurant/Bar A de Charlie (you’ll see a Coca-Cola sign). Take the lane next to the restaurant, turn left at the top of the short climb, then go right under the old railroad tracks. After that, turn left again, and you’ll find the Greenway. Peaceful and scenic path along the old train tracks. It’s so much better than navigating busy roads and traffic and narrow sidewalks! Second Tip: A Scenic Alternative that once again a friendly local suggested “The Camino Provides.” and it’s a gem! As you arrive next to the highway, you’ll need to walk up and over the main highway Caminho Das Laxes Instead of walking under the bridges and highways as on the video. This path begins with a short but steep climb, and at the top, you’ll follow the Camino de Fanteira, where you’ll see your first marker at 93.460 km. The path takes you through beautiful forests and charming towns, with plenty of locals enjoying their daily hikes. The views of the city, bridges, and landscapes are absolutely worth the effort. This route will eventually lead you into Redondela. If you’d like more details, feel free to ask. I’m happy to help!
Yes, enjoying the soups. Passez de bonnes vacances!
One pot cooking! Can’t beat it. The Smokey German sausage really boosted them too. We’re pleased to say the little oven is working great too 👍🏼❤️
Your photos of the Northern Lights are outstanding! What a treat.
Thanks Lyne. None are enhanced at all, it’s straight from the iPhone and unedited. We were so excited to see them 🤩
I certainly did not expect Paris. J’adore Paris! Your soups look delicious. The Christmas markets are all so beautiful. Did you reserve the campsites ahead of time? It must be different not having an itinerary. Enjoy!
LOL yes, it’s hard not to be planning and making reservations right, left, and centre. However we’re getting there and hopefully we’ll learn that it will all be ok and things will work out. Winter is most definitely more difficult Lyne. Finding places that are open. Most times it won’t matter, we will just wild park somewhere. But we have an issue with Vandalf’s heater at the moment which means it will only run on electric, and combined with that, it was v v cold. So we needed campsites. However, we still only booked a place to stay the morning before, so we’re pleased with that.
And the Northern Lights - you really were blest!
A bucket list item ticked off the list Bryson ✅
And Basin Head too! Yay!!
Wow! Hedwig really captured the beauty of North Lake!
Next time you'll have to take that 8 km beach walk to East Point! :-)
Well, that's a turn up for the books😊 looks like an amazing start to your van life, the good & the bad & the sparkly 🌟
Fabulous guy's Enjoy 🎉
I knew a question/answer on Jeopardy this week because of your adventure! It was about the Confederation Trail and PEI!
LOL really? 😂 That’s so funny. What was it?
Wow, the landscape & that music ❤ mesmerising
And iam glad they left a few of the tracks in situ, keeps the past alive
Yeah it’s such a nice touch Jutta ❤️
So glad the gift shop was open. It was closed when we did the walk. Great to see places are staying open late into October.
Us too Bryson. We were relying on that to get a bit of top up charge for the bikes 😅😂. It was a lovely place and the staff were of course so friendly and helpful. We came away with quite a few Christmas Tree decorations 😂
Your detour onto the Munn Road saved you 4 km on Rte 16. That's not much, but if you felt safer that way, it was worth it.
Yeah we think without the potato trucks flying backwards and forwards it probably would have been fine. But all in all with the potential for rain, it was a good call on the day 👍🏼
I thought of doing the two-way on the Confederation Trail too - the Snake Road accomplished the same objective. :-)
Great shots of East Point! The bench just south of the lighthouse is at Grace Cameron's house - she's another Camino Pilgrim!
That was yet another utterly fabulous day Bryson. One of our most favorites
Fortunately, that Northside Road is rather quiet. That little stream from the East Lake goes out to the beach - just watching Hedwig showing this. You have to cross this stream if you're taking the alternate beach walk to East Point - wish I had Hedwig when I plotted the route!
LOL yes, Hedwig would have been a v handy team member when you were doing all of that. He’s actually a very good scout at times, and for seeing things you wouldn’t ordinarily get to see of course. He’s been hibernating since we left, sleeping in Vandalf’s cavernous storage space. He’s not too fond of coming out right now. It’s v chilly and wet in Germany right now 😂
Ha! The flying Finn's (or the flying Irish?!)
😂😂 🚴🚴🏼♀️💨💨
Another superb day! E-bikes are such a blast. Am I the only one feeling a bit sad that your PEI vlogs are coming to an end? I will be stopping in Souris next summer to take the ferry to Îles-de-la-Madeleine (Magdalen Islands). Can’t wait to see what you did on your days off.
Awww Lyne! That’s so absolutely heartwarming to hear you say that ❤️🙏🏼❤️. To be honest it feels a bit like that for us too. Whilst we’re still editing and uploading every, we still feel IN it, and that it’s still ongoing. We were so very sad to be leaving PEI, but it will feel like we’re leaving all over again when the videos are done too ☹️❤️. But we’ve made so many wonderful friends, and all of you guys found us, so it’s not really goodbye ❤️
What a great day out, for you guys! I have watched all your videos...and have come to realisation, I would love to do the Confederation trail, by e bikes!!! We have regular bikes and it can be a struggle to do 12 miles, if it windy, or hilly. I really appreciated how all the drivers slow down and pull over for you...doubtful if they would do that where we live (Ontario). PEI really is a lovely place...so many nice people have come out to help you.
The whole journey was magical ❤️. We’ll be doing the wrap up video soon and we’ll chat about that, but definitely the kindness of the people was a major highlight for us. And most definitely… e-bikes FTW!! We had the “pedal assist” versions and they were fabulous. A totally different it equally wonderful experience. Definitely give it a go 🚴💨💨
Yes to all of that! Pretty much the same for me, one of my knees is also quite dodgy & I was very worried about that... but all the pilgrims I spoke to had some kind of health issues, many of them much more serious than mine. But we all made it to Santiago somehow... My favourite day was also that stretch from Aguardia to Oia. The boat ride was such a cool start to the day and the walk to Oia, oh wow!!! Those yellow roads sure were endless 😅 but the landscape & the Atlantic, wow!!! And the final walk into Oia with that charming chapel, perfect ✨
Now you’re making us want to watch the Camino videos again 😂. Exactly Jutta! No matter how unprepared you feel, you see others in worse shape than you, just plodding along and doing it. The thing is to just do it. Slowly, carefully, and enjoy it ❤️
@@ChonkyTrundlers iam definitely gonna do a little trip down memory camino lane between Christmas & New Years, much better than telly!!! Tschüß 😊
Definitely. You can only watch Home Alone so many times 😂
😂
.
You look so nice! lovely life!!
Thank you Carmen! What a very kind thing to say ❤️🙏🏼. Are you new to the Channel?
@ hey! Hope you are doing great! I am not new to your channel, I started following you when you walked the Camino back in Spain I now walked the Camino myself!! You both motivated me!
Ah Carmen we’re so sorry 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♀️😂. We’re usually good at remembering names. Probably all the Gluhwein at these Christmas markets 😂. Oh awesome! That’s so cool. Which route did you do and how did you get on? 🎊
@@ChonkyTrundlersI did the Portuguese coastal route, it was amazing! Keep traveling maybe one day we may meet in your adventures
We so hope so Carmen. The Coastal is fabulous. We did parts of it, often unintentionally 😂, but we loved the Litoral. Until our paths meet we will save you a place on the benches. A Happy New Year from the both of us ❤️
9th of December today and UA-cam showed me this video, I thought I'd seen all of them! So that was a lovely surprise, just finished watching it. Wonderful to see you walking into that square, such a special feeling! I realise you've been doing a lot of other hikes & trips, but the camino has woven its magic spell over all of us, don't you think? I arrived in Santiago on 10.08.2024 after an unforgettable camino and it's been such a joy seeing your videos ! I didn't do the spiritual route, so it was especially interesting seeing your footage. Thanks again for sharing & hope you're having fun & frolics on your current adventure 😊
LOL how funny. That video was up ages ago 🤪. Oh absolutely. The Camino will always be a very special one, for lots of reasons. Even if we did it again, the first Camino will always be the most special. You really are walking in the footsteps of history, of tens of thousands of other pilgrims, and you’re all connected. It’s a <whispers> beautiful experience 🤫😳
@@ChonkyTrundlersbeautiful indeed! ❤
.
Great job guys! Looking forward to your van life series ❤❤
Thanks you guys 👋🏼 Hope you’re both doing great. Any adventures loaded into the barrel? ❤️
I always enjoy the music selections too!
Sometimes we finish a video and then sit there for a good half an hour mulling and listening to loads of different tracks until one just fits. We’ve also made a little library of fave ones too 🤫😂
Just when you think you've seen it all, there you are zooming along 👏💪🚴
LOL thank you Jutta. Yup, we did enjoy the zooming for sure. Added a whole extra dimension to the trail. We loved it ❤️
