Escape From Monkey Island Review | The Ultimate Insult
As well known as LucasArts is for their graphic adventure games, they haven't developed a new one since 2000. I'm taking a look at the (in)famous Escape from Monkey Island to see why this point-and-click juggernaut called it quits on the genre and their most popular series. We'll explore LucasArt's jump to 3D adventure games, attempts to recapture or at least reference Ron Gilbert's original masterpiece, and perhaps even uncover the true secret of Monkey Island.

The Curse of Monkey Island Review | Peak Monkey Madness
Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
Just like the ghost/zombie/demon pirate LeChuck, Monkey Island can never truly die. Released by LucasArts in 1997, The Curse of Monkey Island (see also: Monkey Island 3, Monkey 3, Curse) is proof that the iconic adventure game series can survive the advent of first person shooters, the loss of Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman, and Tim Schafer, and an entirely new visual style. Curse of Monkey Island ...

Someone who grew up in the time always has a different view.. For example,, i grew up in the Amiga days, and is always remains nostalgic to me over any games you make today..Yes their good, but i always find myself going back to the 1980's of Commodore 64/Amiga Compare that with games you make in the 90's or even music, the same rules apply... You'll always favor those than anything later.. even if the story is better.. because that was "your" idea, or you grew up in the moment,, so you'd rather stick to it like glue.. I can understand why Ron wanted Mi3 like that. The remake of Great Gianna Sisters is terrible .... Give me the original Amiga one anyday.. The music was also way better. (Maybe you'd like to know Telltale died off..) shortly after.. I still reckon 'Tales of Monkey Island' was too much of a budget-blow, that was the final nail for them.

You can skip the naval battles by using Shift+V. Also, the cannon at the top of the list, is always 1 victory's worth of booty. The second is 2 victories and so on and so on. So you can either come back and get the very next update after each victory, or just stock up on booty until you have enough to buy the final cannon.

I find it really funny that in a game about pirates, people complain about guybrush causing trouble. He's a pirate. Also, he caused a lot of trouble in the first games as well - I don't know why you think he acted differently in the 2nd game. He killed the governers dogs, stole credit from the shop keeper's safe, stole fish, meat and a pot form the chef at the scumm bar, marooned his crew on monkey island (one possobel ending), stole fruit from the natives of monkey island and then conned them into giving away their navigator. Guybrush isn't a moral guy.

Wow! That was most harsh review of MI2 that I ever came across! :-D And in many things I agree with you: pixel hunting, bra/dress joke, Guybrush as a sociopat, less "piratey" atmosphere. But cannot agree on the puzzles. Yes, some of them was ridiculus and used moon logic, on the other hand they perfectly fit game structure. Many of them are best in history... Fetch quests? Well it's just staple of adventeru games/rpg of the era. I never felt like it was wasting my time, I felt acomplishment. Even Guybrush as unlikeable as he is fits game narration (ending and anachronizims). I think MI1 is a better pirate/comedy game but MI2 is better adventure game!

you can't play it with the original graphics and voice acting making this version useless. the remaster characters are really blandly stylized, their level of detail makes the limited animation look incredibly tacky, the color use is significantly worse and they literally used comic sans for stan's sign instead of drawing it by hand. if you want voice acting get the talkie version off archive.org and copy your preferred soundtrack (original cd, remaster) to the main game folder then run the game with scummvm

I really wanted to love this game. But it is a fine example of ruining a classic series catering to "making one we can sell on consoles". This isn't Resident Evil. TANK CONTROLS IN MY POINT AND CLICK ADVENTURE?!?!? Honestly, never got past the last fight against giant LeChuck because I could only work a strategy that slowly chipped damage away. The final battle was looking to take 30 minutes or longer. (wait you just draw 3 times?!) So much bullshit in this game. I liked the TellTale series so much more than this 3D polygon'd crap.

My nostalgia told me I loved this game, but honestly it has so many glaring problems that it’s truly a difficult red-headed stepchild to love. I’m not convinced the tank controls were for console releases, because AFAIK Grim Fandango never released on consoles and that pioneered the tank controls. I genuinely think LucasArts just figured it was the hip new thing. I do love a lot of the l characters in Escape, like Admiral Casaba, Ignatius Cheese and the Dainty Lady Figurehead.

0:15: Nope. In 1990, computers were running on MS-DOS 4.0, and file names had 8+3 characters, all upper case. And data were not stored on CD-ROMs, but on diskettes. And Star Wars Episode 1 came in 1999.

It's a great game and I do prefer it to the first one personally, but claiming it's better than Monkey 2 was always going to be a controversial opinion. I'll always appreciate the fact that it managed to feel like a real Monkey without the original team behind, which was in and of itself a true miracle. I'm glad Ron is coming back, because I wouldn't trust anyone else to bring back Monkey at this point, I don't know if 3 was peak but it was certainly the swansong of the series.

(BIG SPOILERS FOR MI1) The same joke about your actions being pointless is also in the first game... you complete three quests to impress the important looking pirates, only for them to disappear so you gather a crew to go save Marley... only for the crew to mutiny... so you find your way into the heart of Monkey Island, only for the ghost ship to sail back to Melee island... so you go to save Marley, only to ruin her plan that would have saved herself. Everything would have been fine if you hadn't gotten involved!

6:33 The items in the pot aren't random. They are all listed in the journal on board as ingredients for making the magic potion for traveling to Monkey Island, but with a twist. So instead of 1 Pressed Skull it's a skull and cross-bones flag.

Great video. Just love this game, can’t count on two hands how often I’ve played through it over the years … Day of the Tentacle, Curse of Monkey Island and Toonstruck (the latter two arguably some of the last classic Point and Click adventure games with AAA budgets) are my all time favorite point‘n‘click games, a genre I adore to this day (best to forget about the 3D era of the early 2000s.) Regarding Toonstruck: Alas - even though the game still enjoys great review scores - so many people haven‘t heard of it as the publisher (Virgin Interactive!) did a terrible job at marketing the game back then, what already started with one of the ugliest game boxes ever created^^. But the title itself is an absolute gem: Christopher Lloyd from Back to the Future plays not too successful artist Drew Blanc who is getting sucked into his own cartoon world. Amazing humor, similar controls to CoMI, logical but not too easy puzzles all around, zany, gorgeous art style and great length. They even had most of a part 2 made already but as the game undeservedly didn‘t sell that well, alas that one has never seen the light of day. No idea if you still log into your UA-cam account every now and then, as your last video was from 5 months ago but if you should stumble over this posting you definitely owe it to yourself to give Toonstruck a try - Especially as you liked Curse of Monkey Island. Of course I‘d recommend the game to any PnC-fan. Same as with Curse it‘s one of the final resurgences of the classic 90s adventure era heyday (Toonstruck released in 1996, CoMI in 1997) when big studios still invested in the genre (and before 3D crept into everything …)

It would be interesting to see more of it, although definitely more than a bit depressing. I remember there being a Workshop mod for Dragonfall called Shadowrun Unlimited that took this approach to Seattle. Unfortunately the mod author seems to have stepped away from the project a long time ago so no hope of them doing the same for Kowloon.
