  • We're continuing on with the Monkey Island Special Editions. The Secret of Monkey Island was a light romp through the Caribbean with a lovable idiot. Monkey Island 2 is...something different. Laugh at my suffering as much as the developers intended you to while I explain why Monkey Island 2 is a massive disappointment.

I don't think anyone even reads this far, but if you have, congratulations! You've discovered where I'll be hiding my hints to upcoming features. Dev commentary for this game will be coming up, but I'm also planning on covering another sequel in a genre that also inexplicably always finds a way to involve voodoo.

I find it really funny that in a game about pirates, people complain about guybrush causing trouble. He's a pirate. Also, he caused a lot of trouble in the first games as well - I don't know why you think he acted differently in the 2nd game. He killed the governers dogs, stole credit from the shop keeper's safe, stole fish, meat and a pot form the chef at the scumm bar, marooned his crew on monkey island (one possobel ending), stole fruit from the natives of monkey island and then conned them into giving away their navigator. Guybrush isn't a moral guy.

(BIG SPOILERS FOR MI1) The same joke about your actions being pointless is also in the first game... you complete three quests to impress the important looking pirates, only for them to disappear so you gather a crew to go save Marley... only for the crew to mutiny... so you find your way into the heart of Monkey Island, only for the ghost ship to sail back to Melee island... so you go to save Marley, only to ruin her plan that would have saved herself. Everything would have been fine if you hadn't gotten involved!

Wow! That was most harsh review of MI2 that I ever came across! :-D And in many things I agree with you: pixel hunting, bra/dress joke, Guybrush as a sociopat, less "piratey" atmosphere. But cannot agree on the puzzles. Yes, some of them was ridiculus and used moon logic, on the other hand they perfectly fit game structure. Many of them are best in history... Fetch quests? Well it's just staple of adventeru games/rpg of the era. I never felt like it was wasting my time, I felt acomplishment. Even Guybrush as unlikeable as he is fits game narration (ending and anachronizims). I think MI1 is a better pirate/comedy game but MI2 is better adventure game!

It looks pretty cool compared to the original version I played way back in...

I do think MI2 is better than the first, Curse is the best, however. The peak of the series. MI2 is indeed harder in puzzle design, and some puzzles are "out of the box" (metronome banana, monkey wrench, bucket on door) but to be fair, MI1 was far too easy. Complaining about the highlight system is kinda redundant, as the original didn't have it to begin with. Spoiled kids these days ;) Wow, you seriously going to complain about the "1st time travel to island detour joke"? It happens only the first time and is a parody on Indiana Jones. Sure they could have only done it once but repitition makes funny. "I have to click on Dreads ship to travel to another island".. cmon that is very nit picky, be lucky you CAN just click on a place on the map and not need to walk yourself. Plenty of adventure games have you tracking through lots of screens back and forth without any form of fast travel.
