Dedicated to vintage guitars and what makes them special. A series of episodes are in the works on taking an informed and critical look at a diverse group of vintage guitars. The idea is to look and inform. Too many people associated with vintage guitars construct a description designed to build them up in the name of selling them for a good price.
Our series looks at the materials, the construction quality and craftsmanship. We identify any unique features, review the original advertisements of the day and how the instruments fit into the landscape of the time they were built.
We then do a unique series of tests to see what type of performance the instrument has in it. This includes a number of technical tests, playability evaluation and a good old fashioned listening.
Hopefully we will help the collector or hobbyist get a feel for each classic guitar in an unbiased arena. Oh, and it might be fun.

Kenwood GE-74 Equalizer With Reverberation Amplifier 80s Crazy Stereo Equipment!
A pretty rare unit. While this one is not great it does function. Pioneer, Realistic and a whole bunch of brands made Reverbs in the 70s but while Kenwood was late to the party here adding a 7 band EQ makes it unique. The graphic display is really just a 4 segment VU meter hooked to multi color bulbs. If you use it as an EQ and just add a touch of delay its a perfectly fine companion in your rack.

My gift to my fellow Gen X'ers. A goofy description and run through of childhood type sprinklers. That Sunbeam Rain King is dangerous as a circular saw that squirts water. Check out the mass involved spinning at 1000rpms. Leave a comment with what your parents had!

Very nearly mint 18” floor sitting version of a disco era Kool Operator. This fan especially in the Jr version was a huge seller that captured the style of the time. Also one big air mover, quiet…..styling that didn’t detract from function. Thanks for watching this oddity!

I LOVE this! Reminds me of models that I used to dream about owning when I was 10-12 back in 1982-84!
@@ForgottenMachines it is a cool unit. Thanks for watching
Does the fluorescent light work on hundreds that way too.
@@PerryNight-gc3fpYes. Very similar. Thanks for watching.
I've got a 1962 Guild Mark II and that guitar will resonate and hum a tone when you're just talking in the same room as it. It's fully opened up and sounds gorgeous - just wish I could reduce the action at the 12th fret but otherwise a gem of an instrument.
@@ThatSavoieDude You might be able to. I assume you shaved down the saddle. Is the neck bowing forward?
@alsguitars5127 yeah the bridge is like 0.5mm above the wood so it's pretty low. It is what it is
@@ThatSavoieDude you could have the bridge shaved. You remove it and sand it thinner or have the saddle slot deepened and Edges of the support shaved. If you have some extra forward bow in the neck it can be heat pressed perhaps back to flat.
I don’t suppose there’s a model/part printed number anywhere on the removable microcassette recorder unit by any chance?
@@ThatKomputerKat Model 3SVA410. Hope that helps you.
Never seen a toaster oven that turns the upper heating element off once it reaches baking temperature in the bake mode. I have a modern air fryer toaster oven with a digital control panel. And on that particular unit you can set a specific temperatures for broiling and while it's preheating it will turn on the bottom and burners and then once it reaches temp it will switch to just the top. I'm also guessing your General Electric toaster oven doesn't have a cooling fan to cool off the control panel maybe where it's on the bottom and heat rises it's not as much of an issue.
Bro that motor is rarer than you think😧
Yes fake money
I see vintage alnico 12" speakers on ebay from old tube amps, organs, etc. and alot are 16Ohms, which I need. What would they sound like in a guitar cabinet? I bet these Jensons would rock.
@@lsu1992 They all had different frequency specs, power capacity and sensitivity ratings. Jensen speakers are very well suited to guitar cabinets. I have several guitar combos with late 50s Alnico 5 equipped Jensens. To me they have a great tone. Thanks for commenting.
I enjoy my 1991 Sony KV-20EXR20. All that, plus an S-Video input and composite AV output
Sony is so full of BS
Style over substance. 😃
This is when they still used mahogany necks on these also and not "select hardwood" which usually means Spanish cedar but sometimes is genuine mahogany.
Shi reminds me of chicken little
what about the manual versatron 1000? did those perform well? would you recommend?
A good performer. Functionally a decent oven from that time period but in this chassis its really about the over the top tech of the day. A nice condition 1000 works just fine but lacks the impressive electronics. Thanks.
What a guy

Although it’s cool the popcorn is never really that good so thank god they got replaced by any modern day stuff
@@matthewrodriguez2921 While that can be completely true, if not overcooked and with a good long in the future expiration date it comes out great. This one for video was really good and had not one burnt kernel which is a first for me. Thanks for watching.
What are you talking about. It constantly comes out better than the newer stuff lmao.

@@yourbestpallshawn4139 scary movie got that from scream
lmfao at this point just buy popcorn seeds use a pot and put a lid over it that is way too much work💀
It takes like 2 minutes and tastes 10x better tho
Here u thought it was a home fire detector 🤣
Iv taken this on camping trips... Really does make the best popcorn
And you have to be quick over an open fire or it burns.
Those alway remind me of the 1st Scream movie
The way it gets ridiculously bigger each time 😂
Or scary movie lmao
Dude this isn't a generation thing💀. It's popcorn
These are way better than microwave popcorn
I think its so funny the way the popping eventually gets loud enough to drown you out lmao
It’s better that way! Thanks for watching.
The best popcorn ever! Why better than any bag popcorn 🍿 😊.
It’s considered vintage at 20 years old
@@seancasey5024 Congrats. You picked the lowest number for vintage yet. Thanks for the comment.
please tell me what is the difference between Martin d 28 and Martin d 35? I'm especially interested in the sound and ease of play, where would it be better🤔
@@makssila3572 Ease of play would be no difference. Neck is the same as is the action spec. D35 may be a little more responsive with light strings due to the lighter top bracing. You need to play both. If you have the wallet for it, the HD-28 gets you the lighter bracing with a two piece rosewood back. Also one to definitely try in your search. Good luck. Trying is more fun than buying.
@@alsguitars5127 Thanks for the information, tell me, there are also two Martins, the D 28 standard and the D28 street legend. Do they have the same sound or does the street legend still sound more interesting?
@@makssila3572 The street legend is just a D28 that’s been distressed and the finish worn. I’m of the camp that you buy shiny and pretty and if you use it and get honest wear and dings you end up with something that’s yours. Also a played guitar sounds better than a new one and it opens up with age up to a point. If you want a street legend your better off with a well used D28.
@@alsguitars5127 thanks for the explanation. Tell me also, there are DH28 and d28, you can already hear the difference in sound, but what makes the DH 28 sound better than the regular d28?
@@makssila3572 that’s HD-28. The top has lighter weight scalloped bracing. From the ones in my hands over the years the tops also appear to be a bit nicer looking, with real nice cross grain silking patterns. Thats not an advertised feature but they have all looked very good.
Is it vintage is kinda funny. In 99 I would've considered a 70s guitar "vintage" but I currently think of a 90's guitar as new lol
The passage of time. I don’t disagree. Is a 1994 Chevy Corsica a classic car? It’s 30 years old. I think we all view things in terms of eras not straight years. Thanks for watching and commenting.
My dad had one of these motors. Really smooth running. Used to fish the Detroit River as a boy. Used our little Evinrude all the time.
@@223Carbine this one is in the Detroit area as well. Must have been a strong Evinrude dealer network at the time here.
It was the 70’s…everyone tried to make “Martin’s”, but only very few made good sounding guitars….cheers
Wow! That’s really cool! I have an atari 2600 and I can’t seem to get it hooked to my old tv. (The ones with the four bolts in the back saying vhf or uhf.) What parts did you use?
@@SomeAntiqueTechEnthusiast You need to hook to the two screws labelled VHF. The two screw style is a 300 ohm set up. If your game box has a single threaded end cable with a slender spike in the center thats a 75 ohm connector. Purchase a 75ohm to 300ohm adapter. Its a threaded barrel with two wires with lugs on the ends for the antenna input of your old set. Thanks for watching.
How odd, another video said the exact opposite, but it was for boots... He said that if you push on the botts and it forms lines its faux and that its the plastic that is creeasing
Can’t speak to the other video but I was taught the info in my video by an old upholsterer with a ton of experience. Its never failed me yet.
Seems to work better than the cheap plastic versions they sell today.
@@silverspring9086 It has definitely been longer lasting.
???????
@@milomiller909 Same.
Trigger
What are the differences in the D-35 over the years till now? Besides what you've already mentioned.
@@richhansen8874 That’s a big question. End of 1969 Brazilian back and sides change to Indian rosewood. Some with a single Brazilian piece in 1970. Pick guards get lacquered over in the 70s, causing no end of finish trouble. Necks stay pretty hefty in size. 80s the pick guard issue ends. 70s offers the D35S which is a 12 fret neck variant. 1990s the necks get thinner profile. Very good quality in the 90s though the 70/80s rosewood looks more attractive. 2000s stay the same but the Ebony boards no longer have that jet black look. Tuners change back and forth but not really an issue. Lots of variants or special editions along the way. The HD-35 copies the look of the HD-28 and in theory has a higher quality top. Hope that helps a bit. The D-35 to my ear is a great guitar but less consistent than a D18 or D28. I’d guess because a lot of different woods come together on them. I like to play a D35 before I buy it as they have a wide range of sound from guitar to guitar where I’d mail order a D18 as they are all close enough to be happy.
@@alsguitars5127 Thanks! Very much helpful and appreciated! 🙂
I'm sold, give me fifty!
Thanks for the comment.
I have the similar KV-9PT50, adorable things
And a nice picture….thanks for commenting
@@alsguitars5127 I got real lucky, the cashier at the Restore had no idea of the value of the little thing, it had no price sticker, so she sold it to me for 5$. The manager came running out of his little office but too late. Ever since then they give me the stink-eye at that store. Thrift stores have insane prices these days. Broken Kallax shelves for 50$, etc. OK rant over
What’s the model number on this motor? I have the same one but the tag on the transom clamp is so worn that I can’t even make it out. Thanks in advance!
Hi. I’ll be glad to help you out but the boat is at our cottage and wont be there for a few weeks to get the model. I do know that in 1989 (motor year) they had three versions of the service manual defined by serial number range as they made many running changes.
@@alsguitars5127 sounds great, thanks!
I had two !!! They would run like sob’s in 55 gallon drums with city water but they had an aversion to river water. Put the boat in the river and you better take two paddles along ….
Ha. Thanks for the comment.
Stick that on the back of a canoe and have a great old time.
It has a zingy throttle feel. Must be very short stroke as when you pull the rope it fires like 7 times in one pull.
I need this how much
Funny you should say that. Ebay auction 186534655897. Read the whole description. Its a very complicated outboard and still needs much love. Thanks for watching.

Goya?
Yes. A Goya. Made in Sweden by the the Levin Company. Learn about it on my review video here. Good info. ua-cam.com/video/RPtmNE-cxR8/v-deo.htmlsi=H1bVTyfa6PIPQsy_
@@alsguitars5127 how do you feel about a g30?
@@Camlynn0503 An Excellent guitar. Flamed Maple back and sides on a full 15” body. I have one lined up for the channel. Ebony fretboard. Its a great sounding guitar. If you like the G30 you will also like the FL7 which is a lighter weight version but hard to find. Thanks.
@alsguitars5127 I found a 1958 g30 and I'm not sure if I should get it or if I should get a alvarez mpa70e they are both the same price both in good shape but the Alvarez is over all I better shape (understandable because it's not very old) which one should I go with?
@@Camlynn0503 Wow. Thats an old desirable Goya. I would expect the Goya to blow away the Alvarez in sound quality and be much more sellable if you didn’t like it after a while. That said, have you had it in your hands? Any 60+ year old guitar could have neck or body issues if not cared for. Assuming the G30 is in good playing shape its the one to buy.
I just gotta play this video on hot days when I'm stuck inside, thanks for the cool sprinkler vid!
If you only knew how way too old I am to have done this video….thanks for the comment. Wanted it to be a fun light hearted two minutes for those who might remember these. In all seriousness that Sunbeam will hurt you! Take Care.
What do you recommend for a stiff or seemingly locked steering ?
Oil and grease. Yours may have a grease fitting on the radius arm as well as fittings on the pivot points of the motor for left right and up down. You need a grease gun to lube those. There also may be an exposed rod that slides into a tube on boat side of engine. The surface of that rod should be greased all the way around the whole length. Make sure the steering cables are not pinched or sharply bent and oil them with light machine oil like bicycle or motorcycle cables in the sheath. That should ease the steering quite a bit.
I have this same engine I can’t get the water to exhaust like that
Could be water pump impeller, gouges in pump housing, clogged passages. Seeing if water volume changes when thermostat opens? These should have an overheat alarm wired in to warn you of an issue. They don’t like to run hot or lean. Always wipes out the center cylinder. Thanks for the comment.
I have this same issue but even before I turn my boat on the alarms going off
I don't know how intense the light is that you use but I have never seen a cedar soundboard allow any light through. In fact many people use the light test to determine if a soundboard is cedar or spruce when there is any doubt. I only use a light that is no more powerful than a standard 25 W lightbulb, so perhaps you have something far more powerful or that utilizes a different spectrum. Some Ramirez Guitars from this time were made with redwood instead of cedar so that would be another consideration. The sides of Ramirez 1a and 2a guitars from that time were lined with cypress inside. At any rate, it is a beautiful Guitar!
I use a lot of LED light. About the equivalent of two 100watt traditional floodlights. I’ve been able to blast the light through a mahogany back even. The guitars top was thick and dense.
