Basically about Basil
Приєднався 5 чер 2010
This channel is about the cultivation, breeding, and use of exotic hybrid and ethnic basil. We also offer basil seeds on our website www.basicallyaboutbasil.com .
Checking out some Basil trichomes
I recently got a simple 1000x digital microscope and put it to use checking out some basil trichomes. The trichomes contain all the fragrant and flavorful compounds that make basil so special. My goal is to breed basil with larger trichomes and denser coverage so I’ll use the microscope to help evaluate plants.

I was pretty into basil before I stumbled across Jason's UA-cam channel and started visiting his farm's website on a regular basis to check out seasonal offerings. Now, I would classify myself as something of a basil fanatic. Over the past few of seasons, I've been able to infuse so many unique flavors and scents into my garden and hope to continue doing so for seasons to come. My rapidly evolving basil garden has become the envy of many neighbors, and pollinators of all shapes and sizes just absolutely love stopping by.
I bet this is what heaven smells like

@@Ambassador_829 just search basically about Basil and you’ll find our website.
Www.basicallyaboutbasil.com is where I have them listed.
What’s the most medicinal basil you grow ? Or know of ??
@@kgplants I’m not totally sure. I can’t make any official medical claims but I’m sure different basils would have different effects due to the different terpene contents.
I rub Basil all over my face and sometimes I pound it and squirt internally for thrush. I love that basil.
So cool!!
I can dig it! Especially with the music. If this doesn't get gardeners excited for Spring, I don't know what will.
I have em all
nice
On the plus side, a few of the plants that came from the Linnamon seed mix could be excellent candidates to cross pollinate with some of the temperate Tulsi that I have growing. Two in particular look similar to Dire Dawa but have a very nice cinnamon/citrus fragrance. They're also very robust and so I'm thinking they will grow something similar to Star of the Sea if they're crossed with some quality temperate Tulsi. We'll see.
Sadly, we lost the last remaining clone from Star of the Sea. I'm thinking I'm only going to get one to survive if it has a highly developed root system or if I can get some nice plant trimmings that are unrooted that I can stick into the native soil in spring when things are more likely to be growing better.
That’s too bad. I wonder why this one is giving you trouble?
@@BasicallyaboutBasil I'm just thinking the first batch I made a few mistakes with. The 2nd batch I think the roots were just not developed enough and the soil I put them in might not have been optimal for helping them spread. I figured it out with the last cutting, but the roots just weren't developing. I tried to actually take smaller cuttings from the clones you sent but even those didn't take like I thought they would.
@@BasicallyaboutBasil I'm thinking now that I've run the course with them and learned a few things that the 3rd time should be the charm. When I get around to purchasing some clones this coming year, maybe you can send some generous unrooted trimmings, and I can start them in an optimal soil mix down here. I have found success rooting cuttings in a 50/50 mix of potting soil and native soil. I put them in a shallow base of rainwater and keep them in a morning sun heavy and afternoon shade location and they almost always root like crazy. I figure if it doesn't work the 3rd time then it's not meant to be.
@ yeah the rooted cuttings take a bit of nursing to get them going. They actually have to transition between water and soil roots so it takes about to weeks to get them going. You have to slowly transition from having the soil soaked to partially dry.
What is a trichome?
I looked it up, but was curious why it's important to you (what you think is cool to know about these )
@@exposure3569 it’s because they contain all the fragrant flavorful compounds. I want to breed the most flavorful basil possible so I look for more trichomes.
Amazing project. Keeping our pollinators as healthy as possible is extremely beneficial to the ecosystem. Thank you!

Black, or the darkest purple possible
Everyone’s tastebuds are different. I don’t like bubble gum flavor, but love American holy basil. Your basil strain sounds intriguing. I might like it very much! The blue tea you made with Williamsburg blue was cool! In the future I will order some basil from you. I have so many types. Even got Florida basil in a rare seed swap. I don’t like the taste of genovese. Someone said it has a licorice taste, but I just taste pepper. I like licorice basils. Purple basils. …..I wish someone would come out with basil that is almost black. It would be cool to see, and wonder what that would taste like??? Blah blah blah… from an old plant freak!!!
@@snugglebunny.jmosbrook yes that is true everyone’s taste buds are different. I many like the smell of the bubblegum ones or brewing a tea. When you say Florida basil do you mean the native variety ocimum campechianum? Sure I got a few more Williamsburg blue if you’re interested. A black basil would be interesting but not sure if possible. Wishing you all the best.
@ yes. Florida basil from Florida native person.
Look up polyploidization if your breeding. I have been trying to rediscover the mushroom (I believe) that causes it in nature. If your breeding basil I'd love to get a cutting or seed! Looks really good! Love the microscope shots! Cold water extraction of those terps put through a freeze drier would be bonkers awesome!
@@johnny2965 yeah basil is pretty wacky with polyploidization. I’m not a biologist but my mother is. She got me a book on ocimum and when she read it she said the genus is genetically crazy so to speak. Different species with different chromosome numbers that can cross easily. There are basil species in nature that occurred from natural hybrids. I do sell seeds and will be selling cuttings in the spring. My nursery license only covers East coast. To get seeds just search basically about Basil to find my website. I do dry shift kief of chaff from my seed processing and make a hot cream and milk basil drink with it.

Can you grow basil in water?
@@MellowWind yes basil can be grown hydroponically. I personally prefer and have only grown in soil.
Get an air pump and small air stone, 3-5 gal blacked out bucket and then get to learning what works best for feed wise. It does require changing water so there’s more labor I’d say, but it’s cleaner than dirt and mobile if having them outdoors. For great info, look into cannabis hydro growing, it’s all the same, often you’ll read posts about so n so regularly grows this or that veg, but watching these videos they’ve learned new techniques. We are all as one in the growmie community. Can’t learn without ever trying

My 87 year old dad said the American holy basil smelled like Calgon. I love the smell and taste in tea. So different!!
@@snugglebunny.jmosbrook are you referring to the one that’s a bit bubblegumy? Most of my plants are hybridized with that one.
Soooo coool
@@snugglebunny.jmosbrook totally agree. Maybe in the future I’ll splurge for a microscope with more zoom and better pictures.
@ wonder how much that would cost. The Tricia’s shapes are interesting, and they are there when dried…
@@snugglebunny.jmosbrook I guess the price just depends on how good I want. I think if I had even just 2000X and twice the resolutions it would be good enough. I definitely had a lot of fun seeing the shapes for the first time. I normally just noticed them because the plants would have a bit of a sparkle to them.

@@bogdodder5497 I’m right there with you.
So, to clear this up for anybody wondering, I always thought once two basil plants that were different species crossed that the pollen from the new hybrid was no longer present and that it was just nectar producing. But that isn't exactly the case. At least if I'm hearing you correctly. So, I can plant Chaos Theory near other basil plants and the pollen from it can cross, that might explain why I have about 6 or 7 seedlings that look like they might be crossed with it. I had temperate Tulsi growing near it so could it have crossed into those and that might be the seedlings I'm collecting?
Yes the hybrids will definitely produce pollen. What can happen though is the tube the pollen goes down can be deformed resulting in reduced fertility from what I understand. Also basil has some funky stuff going on with the chromosome number which can vary when you hybridize as far as I know.
@@BasicallyaboutBasil That's good to know though. I do have some Chaos Theory planted around some cool basils. Everything that grew from the Linnamon, to the beekeeper, and the 2020 mix all produced plants that have produced seeds. So, I will keep an eye out to see if anything shows up that looks like it might have crossed with the Chaos Theory or may have come directly from it.

Hi, I decided to make available my open pollinated seeds for this one. Since its a hybrid and the seeds are open pollinated in my breeding plot they won't breed true but should have some characteristics of the parent. I have some small seedlings now and some appear to be fairly sparkly with trichomes. You can find the seeds listed on our website.
Never seen flowers at stores
@@williampatrickfurey that’s true. Although Thai basil is sold with flowers on sometimes. Eating flowers is mostly for a home grow.
@BasicallyaboutBasil I'm lying, I've seen it in the cases of arugula I buy, my bad, totally forgot
I'm here for your idea. I hope it works out in the end. When I saw the picture you put, the first thing I thought was, "I wonder if I could get that thing stickier than it already is."
Thanks for the interest. I hope so too. Basil essential oil is prized so why not try to breed for higher concentrations. Having more glandular trichomes will also make it easier to extract the essential oil simple by doing a dry shift Basil kief. I have always had trouble with small batch steam distilling of essential oil so Basil kief is my go to method for making extract now. It will also look plain cool if I can get these flowers totally encrusted with trichomes.
@@BasicallyaboutBasil how can we use to Increase Tricones in Cannabis?
@ it’s a separate species and would have to be bred within the species.
@@BasicallyaboutBasil Do the purple basil varieties give different colored trichomes, sometimes? In the cannabis world, there are trichomes with different shapes, some trichomes are greasy and other trichomes are sandy. Some trichomes have thin necks, something that is coveted by those who do cold water extractions. Are you going to make F2s, F3s, and so on for lines of Basil that have higher concentrations of their trichomes? I'm most curious about the variety of difference between Basil flowers on the thickness of those trichomes, do mutations hurt or hinder the trichome density and oils, and whether the males make any trichomes at all, etc. There's a lot to learn from your video.
@ For the most part they seem to be clear and sparkly or golden. I’m getting a microscope soon to further investigate. Normally Basil trichomes seem to be powdery when dry but this plant seems to be producing some sticky leaves which is interesting. I’m growing some seeds out now and will select seedlings by evaluating under microscope for trichomes. I’ll keep selfing it and try to enhance the density and size. Basil is a hermaphroditic outbreeder that crosses easily so I normally do open pollination and keep selecting the best plants. With my indoor grow set up I’ll also start doing some purposeful crosses. I have some other plants with good coverage I’ll try to cross this one with. I’m not to sure about mutations.

Thanks I appreciate that. Definitely agree on that. I got some seeds started and ordered a 1000X digital microscope. I am going to start selecting for the largest glandular trichomes and selfing it over the generations. I'll also try some crosses with other plants I have with large glandular trichomes.
Pretty neat specimin. I think people have used the juice from an autumn crocus to do similar things before, haha. Definitely alot more cystolithic hairs than glandular trichomes.
@@graildibble thanks we appreciate it. Basil is pretty cool because there is a collection of species in the ocimum genus that can naturally hybridize with spectacular results. Hopefully with selective breeding I can further increase the density and size of those glandular trichomes. While also reducing the number and size of the hairy ones.
@BasicallyaboutBasil manipulation of environment might also be able to help produce more epigenetic changes as well. Very cool project.
impressive growth keep up the great work
Thanks so much I really appreciate it. As long as I'm breathing I'll be growing basil. Hopefully as the years go by those glandular trichomes will get bigger and bigger and I can breed down the hairy trichomes.
Always learning from your videos. This will help me in the spring to identify the best plants for flavor, essential oils, and perfumes. Also, I might send a few of my coolest hybrids your way. To the address on the seed envelopes. Not to the farm of course. This way you can quarantine them for a little while first.
Thanks I appreciate. I am all about sharing everything I know about basil. Cool deal about the plants that sounds great. Seeds or clones?
@@BasicallyaboutBasil I suppose I could send some of both. We're getting some really neat Linnamon hybrids that are crossed with all sorts of things. Found a lavender like this while hiking with such resinous leaves that even touching without pressing actually makes your hands slightly sticky. I'm starting to think it was actually basil cross though
Thats really cool. I've noticed Lavendar has a lot of Trichomes before to. I always thought they were a bit powdery. Pretty nifty they can be sticky to.
Very interesting! Definitely stabilize that trait! It'll be time consuming, considering its a recessive pheno, but with enough plants grown to select from it'll be achievable. Amazing job!
@@gravitybug thanks appreciate it. I’m thinking of getting a microscope and evaluating seedlings for large trichomes so I can speed up selection. I have some other seed lines with large trichomes but they are not dense. Hopefully I can get them larger and denser.
