Knife handle 101 pt 2
I'm not happy with the aesthetics of this lump of a cork handle for the fishing knife blade, but holding it the way I would to fillet a fish, it really feels good and secure. When the handle is wet and slimy, you don't want the blade to twist. (unless you want to lose a finger)... and it floats ! ( which was the objective of this project) The blade is by Frost of Mora, Sweden that I brought back from my last family trip to Norway. (which is why I don't want it disappearing into the depths when fishing... as some of my gear has ! )

Staghorn/Elkhorn Ball Rebuild after the bird damage.

After the damage done to my Elkhorn Ball (Platycerium bifurcatum) by Blackbirds looking for nesting material, a rebuild became inevitable. The 2 rectangular plastic...

Thank you. It's simply Tasmanian hardwood driftwood. Well weathered and when I collect interesting pieces, I hose them off and soak them for at least 24 hours and then the pieces are stacked on pallets until I have an orchid that needs a new home. They sometimes come together really well. Cheers 😎👍

Winter greetings from Tasmania. It's possible to reduce the main stem by air layering and cuttings. The leaf size is mainly determined by the cultivar and the age/size of the stem. I have one that's a miniature variety that is still young, but probably will never have leaves bigger than a small luncheon plate. Bonsai techniques probably won't reduce the leaf size dramatically, but I've never tried it. Good luck. 😎👍

Hi Wane😌🙌That's a hardy and tough ginger plant you have in the garden. In Japan here the cultivated member of the ginger family is the Zingiber mioga Japanese ginger is a deciduous perennial in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) native to Japan. It flowers on a stem and just as it breaks through the ground it's cut and used in vegetable dishes and pickles. It's very cold hardy down to -16℃ so here it goes down to -8℃ and it dies down to its rhizomes.

Well done Wane😌👏I need a pulley system because I have Cereus cacti getting rather huge in pots and they must be 20kg now. That's extremely cold weather for Tasmania there Wane. It does go down to -8℃ here in Saitama Japan. My cacti handle it fine because Winters are dry yet bright and sunny, even the native Vanda falcatas and dendrobium moniliforme can do fine when hanging or mounted to trees. The trees give off a certain amount of heat that disperses frost. Wowzers, it's been hot this month with temperatures 35℃ and humidity hovering around 80%. I've been having to hose down the orchids in there shady house daily, and they dry out by the next day. Thanks for the helpful tips Wand and enjoy your night

I think my sailing days are over, but the new mini block and tackle is for my Honda CT110 for when I go bush along difficult forest tracks for fishing. Easy to lift it up n over impossible obstacles by simply looking for a strong overhead branch to tie it to. I'll be get some small stainless steel shackles that will fit the Becket and loop ends for better rigging with a heavier heave rope. I'll try and keep the rig small so that it doesn't get in the way of the camping and fishing gear + Gus that has to fit on the bike. You're most welcome. The greenhouse is 6×7 metres and the shadehouse is 6×3 metres with a planned extension of another 6×3 metres. Whenever you think you have plenty of room, danger awaits because they multiply and the temptation for "just one more" will occur. It actually is rather easy when you have years and years of gardening experience and failure to learn from. Orchids aren't that scary. My shoulder still limits what I do, but I'm cautious of some jobs that are on my mental "must do" list... another day? Cheers

I had one of these Dendrobium’s years ago it’s fragrance smelled like black licorice, and i lost it in hurricane IKE, I have never been able to find another one. I live in Texas, if you know where I could purchase another plant i would appreciate it. Thanks for your video, and congratulations on placing at the orchid show.

Sorry to hear that you lost yours. The only thing I can suggest is to watch for orchid shows and club sales. Retail nurseries rarely keep large plants. They try and sell them as soon as they reach flowering size if not before. Good luck 🤞 ...btw, I'm in Tasmania so I'm not going to be of much help unfortunately. Cheers

really monstrous one)) you know, Wayne, you mentioned scales in the video. actually, I was always interested how do you manage pests in your greenhouse? and what types of it are the most common in your area? I always struggle with spider mites on my Miltoniopsises, Oncidiums and thrips on Den. kingianum and Epidendrums(( It's my nemesis. I don't know how they manage to survive all the treatments. So maybe you can share your experience in a video, so you won't strain your shoulder)

My Nemesis? All of the above ! I avoid more toxic chemicals than horticultural Oil and my routine morning inspection as I wander around the greenhouse with a cuppa 'usually' catches them before their population explodes and it's limited to one plant.(I spray the neighbours as well) Neem Oil is my preference, but due to the frogs and skinks I'm fairly cautious and extremely reluctant to use other chemicals. Cheers

Hi Wane😌🙌Yeah, it's hard to repot orchids in plastic pots. I have most of mine in teracotta and plastic, and once they grow outside the pot, i'll take a cutting and mount that piece👍It seems an easier method, and the remaining plant I can trade or give away. I enjoyed watching Wane😌🙏

I agree. This one was left too long due to a series of medical/physical setbacks. I'm trying to get back on top of my orchids. There are many Dendrobium speciosums and kingianums that need attention, but they're starting to put out flower spikes, so all the ones in the shadehouse will have to wait until after flowering. (at least their root systems aren't like this octopus 🐙) Cheers

Hi Wayne, thank you for making videos where you show the whole process of taking an Orchid out of the old pot. People like myself definitely benefit from the tutorial. I don’t have the experience that you have, and seeing the process gives me more confidence to tackle repotting and mounting jobs that I encounter. I have one question ~ towards the beginning of the video you were clipping off roots that grew out of the bottom of the pot ~that I get. You mentioned at one point, the roots that where growing over the rim of the pot and out that they would be dead~ then some you said where still alive~ just curious, why would they be dead and if not would you ever leave them? Anyway, I hope that makes sense and again~ thanks for the full tutorial, it really is appreciated. Kevin

@@theweirdplantguy4873... hiyah Kevin. You're most welcome. The roots in question were ones that interfered with removing the outer pot and would be damaged anyway and older roots are easy to determine. If they are soft when squeezed, and the velum slides off, they're dead. Leaving the inner fibre can help anchor the orchid when repotting or mounting. Some just have to go. No rules for that. Older brownish roots will often put out a new growing root.(white n velvety with a green tip) ... a very good sign. Cheers. (did you notice in the background that I'm running out of space for more mounted orchids... and then there's the weight = 🤔)

@@waynesweirdworld5788 okay, that’s what I thought about the roots~ I just wanted to clarify. I purchased a few off eBay and most were not mounted, so I am trying my hand at mounting this spring. Speaking of which, are you trying to get things mounted before moving into winter, or can you do that year round because of the greenhouse? Yes, I like all of the mounts~you need to do a tour soon, please! Thanks again, Kevin

    • @waynesweirdworld5788

I gauge my timing on what the orchid is doing. If it's growing new roots(green tips) or a new growth,(not a flower spike) then I consider them fair game. Winter in my greenhouse is still cold 2° --> 3°C with warmroom temps 7° --> 10°C on cold nights with a light frost in the paddock behind the house/greenhouse/shadehouse which is furthest from the ocean.(Bass Strait) Many of my orchids and all my Schlumbergia truncata are developing flower spikes and buds. In a couple weeks it'll be a riot of colour. Long dark nights and colder temps bring on the flower response. Cheers Yes, a tour is a good idea. 😎👍

The potting mix~ it looks like a general potting mix? I noticed by the other comment that they might appreciate a cooler winter temp? How is the watering in winter vs summer? Thanks. Those are some tiny bulbs!

    • @waynesweirdworld5788
      @waynesweirdworld5788 3 місяці тому

You're right. It is a general potting mix that I get by the .5 ton from a depot 20 kms east of here and then I off load it from my ute into large containers. My liquid fertiliser supplies all that they require. They go outside during the winter and get soaked and chilled(2° C)(no frost this close to the ocean). The rain eliminates any soluble mineral build-up. I begin feeding them when I see the first tiny flower spike emerging and it's weakly/weekly after that. I have to keep a close eye on the terracotta pots during the summer as they dry out quickly(all of them are off the ground on a metal mesh bench... minimise slugs/snails, ants and worms) so I sometimes have to water more often. Cheers
