Top time of day was not in the cards with Stormy in attendance, nor was a better PAX finish given the course heavily favored lateral grip and stability over the power/braking advantage of the faster road car classes... But I was happy with my driving on the day. Disciplined from the start, class win by over a second, and by my second run of the day I was already very close to optimal with a 68....

Second event of a two day weekend. My best morning run was my third, a 73.279, which was good enough for top time of day and first in PAX. Leftover margin in a few places resulted in this being a few tenths from optimal. As in the previous day, I was fast without hitting cones, both goals for the weekend. Also as in the previous day, my afternoon runs turned into a bit of drifting... Only modif...

Long course with a good split between fast, open bits and tight twisty bits. Goal #1: stop hitting codes. Accomplished, only one cone hit on the day (while drifting*). Goal #2: be fast. I was third overall and in PAX behind Steve and Tara in Stormy in the Unlimited class, and given how fast they've been this year, I'm okay with that. Per the data and my own seat of the pants feel, I don't think...

What a difference a good setup can make. Here I'm running with lower spring and damper rates, optimized tire pressures, and more toe-in front and rear, all of which contribute to improved compliance over uneven surfaces and a wider operating window overall (ability to recover from small slides without losing momentum). This weekend did not go to plan. Saturday with LPR is not even worth posting about; I threw away my first two runs with massive car placement errors and spent the rest of the day in 100 degree heat trying to unpack what went wrong. Sunday with GGR went a bit better: I at least had a plan, executed that plan, and continued to improve in some key areas run by run. But a few issues have cropped up...

These two laps are reasonably close, so I've pulled together another overlay. I've gone about a half second quicker than this in Assetto Corsa, and know there's plenty of margin in my real life lap as it was done during my very first time on track in the car. Totally stock :D.
@@teddyframhein actually ? Cause im in the market in buying one of this cars for 49k 😩
Yes. They changed the exhaust for 2016-2017, and this is a stock 2016. They also added a tube that pipes induction noise to the cabin. It's lovely, and a great car overall.
@@teddyframhein oh ok got cha . Yeah they are pricy tho
For what it's worth, compared to most other cars in this class, these are unlikely to depreciate much. You'd potentially be able to sell in a few years for not much less than you bought it.
Is that stock exhaust? Sic!
Yup!
2016 SS white love it
Hey! Anyway you would share your suspension settings for AC on the Cayman Clubsport? I saw you on the leaderboards 👀
I can share some perspective but not a setup as I don't have it anymore. I tend to like a setup that allows me to trail the brake down to the apex (rotation on the way in), then power out confidently to the exit. If I remember correctly the GT4 CS is fairly edgy right out of the box... You can try reducing ride heights to improve overall grip to start, holding rake constant. Try softening the front sway bar to shift the balance of grip forward, or softening the rear to do the opposite. And of course, make sure to optimize tire pressures for the conditions, using the tire temperature/pressure HUD to assess during the lap. To be honest, I should probably go back and try this combo again. I'm sure there's more lap time to extract.
Nothing like the PDK downshifts 🤤
I'm an unapologetic proponent of PDK.

Oh man! This is something else
That drift was sick!
Thanks! Turns out this thing's a pretty good drift car... 500bhp, high redline, not as much traction as the 911.
Damn dude that's a fast lap! Congrats on taking out Jan Nimz!!
For now... Thanks!
I just got my 2015 a6 in perfect blue last week. I dont think I ever want to drive anything else ever again lol

@@teddyframhein dont gotta tell me twice lol 1k miles in a week and a half 🤣
What’s the issue with the wheels?
The front wheels are just a little wider, and have just a bit more aggressive offset, so they’re rubbing a little even with the stock tire width of 245mm. The car is in for a slight update to the alignment this week. I want enough clearance to eventually fit a 255 or 265 front tire.
@@teddyframheinstock ride height or lowered a touch?
@@aqu261 Lowered a touch, moreso in the front for a bit of added rake. It turned out the front wheels weren't centered in the wheel wells, so we used caster adjustment to pull them back a little. No more rubbing. I'm still interested in trying to squeeze in a 265...
Question - do you think a GT3 would be slower or faster in a tight Auto-x track like this? All the tests I see show the GT3 being faster than the GT4 but it seems it's on longer sweeping turns that need the stability the Carrera has, i've always wondered which car simply handles better on fun sort of driving like this. I'd really love to see someone compare the GT3 to the GT4RS in a tight track like this.
That's a great question. For this particular course, I bet the ability of the mid-engined Cayman to rotate would be a benefit. It's also a little narrower. But then, the 911 would unquestionably have better traction which is especially important on a point-and-shoot course like this. For me, I prefer autocross courses that are more open than this, combining traditional autocross elements with some low-to-medium speed track-style sweepers (see some of my more recent videos). There too, I don't know if there's a clear cut answer. I'd probably give the edge to the Cayman myself as its 'edginess' at the limit translates to an ability to rotate in low-to-medium speed sections that I prefer over absolute stability. It's also probably the better drift car at these speeds :D. I've also autocrossed a 991.2 GT3 RS, and it felt... Similar. A little wider, noticeably better ability to put the power down, great rotation on a trail of the brake just like the Cayman.
The starter followed by the launch 🤣
I should add a compilation of all of our conversations :D.
Hey, nice lap ! May I have a link for your NeckFX setup please ?
I haven't messed with those settings at all, as far as I can remember. To be honest I didn't even know this was something that was so tunable... Now I'm interested!
the gt4rs and an ss is a dream garage bro
Yeah... I feel very lucky. The Cayman is useful for 'serious business,' the SS when I just want to have some uncomplicated fun (plus it's a great road trip car).
Thanks for including telemetry. Do you mind sharing your alignment settings?
At a high level: -3f/-2.5r camber, slightly lower ride height in front (optimizing for front-end grip), and front bar set to full soft, rear bar to medium (for now). I initially ran the rear bar at full stiff but the car was actually a little too pointy that way.
excellent driving and you captured the sounds exactly, kudos!
Loved it!
lovely!
Absolutely epic driving!!! This is insanely fast!!!! 🔥
Thanks! Hoping for more when cooler weather returns... :D
I’d like to see you drift the entire track 😂
You and me both, but it’s a good way to be black flagged!
Good wheeling, and great car control! I could tell you were one with the attitude of that car. That car quickly transitions from understeer to oversteer and your corrections were spot on! Also great call to keep driver aids on. It seems you are more than capable of piecing a great lap with everything off, but in mixed/unsure conditions it's the right call.
Thank you! It's nice to have the option to disable stability control while leaving traction control enabled in a car this powerful, just for that extra safety net on exit... Especially in mixed/unknown conditions, to your point. TC does feel a little heavy handed at times, though, especially paired with tires like A052's which maintain grip even at some pretty extreme slip angles.
@@teddyframhein Right there with you! Removing just ESC is a very good option in that car. In my eyes it allows for a bit more rotation. Now, if we are at a track we have many laps at and there are good track conditions it all comes off. We haven’t put a set of A052s on our car, just Nankang CR-S V2 and oem SC2. I feel the car needs a little more section width in the front and there are very limited sizes in the Yokos.
Agreed on tires. I use A052's primarily for autocross and it turns out they're fine on track too; but I long for more 255/265 front tire options at the 20" wheel size. I have no intention of modifying to fit 19's. The CR-S V2 may be next on my list to try.
@@teddyframhein When available be sure to try out a set in 265/305 combo on oem wheels. They feel great!
Awesome! My GT4 RS goes into production next week. I can't wait. What camera setup are you using? I like it much better than my current setup.
You'll love it. I use RaceChrono Pro + GoPro for the most basic video output. Add to that a RaceBox Mini for GPS/accel and an OBD2 adapter for engine speed (among other things), and you'll be set.
That is impressive. I assume you are winning your class every time you autocross PCA?
I tend to :). I didn't end up where I should have this past weekend in PAX (only third) but I still had top time of day. The 4RS is a great car for autocross but I can't always fully utilize the power on tap.
Wow. Absolutely flying!
smooth is fast!
Came here just to see track limits being taken to the max 😂
Track limits on this particular version of Daytona are... Well, they're somewhere, but I didn't quite find them!
Nice......very nice
amazing lap.. I can’t seem to get the confidence in iracing… from a brief look my line and braking zones are damn near identical… and I barely drop into the 1:25’s…. 4 seconds slower lol I just don’t feel the limit of the tires… I feel whenever I push more than what I’m comfortable I just lock up and under steer
Thanks. I can confirm, it's tough: it takes time to train your ability to sense through your eyes, ears, hands, but generally in the absence of motion, in a sim. Think about what you can do to improve your ability to sense the limit, before worrying too much about pace. Can you use your eyes to detect rotation and chassis disturbances? Can you hear when the front or rear tires start to slide (pro tip: consider increasing the volume of the tires/chassis relative to everything else)? Are you able to pull meaningful feedback through your hands from the wheel (consider force feedback settings and hand placement)? Overall, how aware are you of your surroundings in the sim? Consider using the built-in skidpad to work on all of this without thinking at all about pace. Slide the car around, have fun! www.iracing.com/tracks/centripetal-circuit/
Alignment specs?
I had BR Racing help set a baseline. Without going into too much detail: slight drop overall, slightly more rake, as much negative camber in front as possible which is potentially limited by rear camber/toe. I started with the front bar at full soft and the rear at full stiff and have since softened the rear for additional traction (note the oversteer at the exit of T5 on this lap - not ideal).
@@teddyframhein Thanks! I am running a 981 GT4 but was just curious as to what the stock 4RS is capable of before getting into things like camber plates, wider tires, etc. I'm running -2.5 f / -2.0 r camber as a 50/50 street and track setup and front castor bushings to correct that issue. At my skill level, that is sufficient for now.
My goal is also the leave the car stock, it's pretty fantastic as-is. We managed -3 f / -2.4 r.
@@teddyframhein That's great. I think many "alignment shops" are not understanding how to adjust the castor using the existing 4RS bushing (which I had to install aftermarket into my std GT4). Anyway, cheers, your video is very informative for a novice driver trying to get better.
Super helpful video! Have not driven Laguna for many years (and that was in a vintage 911 race car...). Now have a GT4 RS Clubsport that is entered in the Porsche Sprint Cup Challenge and am curious if you can share your sim set up? Looks like AC would be very beneficial in learning the tracks, prior to race practice. Thank you!
Absolutely, I've found sim driving/racing to be immensely valuable, and I think it's a must if you want to be properly competitive. My setup is relatively simple: Fanatec DD2 + Clubsport V3 Inverted pedals, Fanatec H-pattern shifter, plus an RSeat RS1 frame and a Valve Index VR headset*. *I just placed an order for a more expensive, more rigid frame from Advanced Sim Racing plus a triple monitor setup, and am looking forward to seeing the impact on my sim driving. VR is great but has limitations in terms of visual fidelity and field of view that do matter at the pointy end of the grid.
@@teddyframhein Thank you so much for this! I will be looking forward to getting a sim setup soon.
What tires were you on? Seemed like there was a little more in it but super clean lap nonetheless!
Yokohama Advan A052. Definitely more in it but in my defense this was my first track day in the car, and my only uninterrupted lap of the day - this thing is so quick that a typical advanced group doesn't give me the space I need.
@@teddyframhein I can only imagine! It did not look slow at all!
Salut my friend super car. super video subscribe subscribe .
If you plan on making more of these videos you should actually break down the little details like minimum corner speed and the differences across the track
Absolutely, great idea. I'll do this when I have real-life comparisons that are closer to optimal.
What’s your rig setup?
I have an RSeat RS1, Fanatec DD2 + Clubsport v3 Inverted Pedals, and a Valve Index - but I'm eyeing a switch to a triple monitor setup for greater visual fidelity.
@@teddyframhein Triples are my dream, but I should try VR sometime. Have a oculus laying around, you think it’s worth? Play on a single monitor
Definitely at least give to a shot. Hopefully motion sickness isn’t an issue for you. If nothing else, it’s really cool to ‘sit inside’ the car, virtually.
Wow, the AC sound is fantastic. Great driving too!
Seems like the real car is much less oversteery than the simulated one! You had to work way less with the wheel on corner exits in the real thing..
I think a lot of it is the pavement. So far, there hasn’t been a scan for Sonoma’s 2024 repave. The Assetto Corsa video is on the old, 2003 pavement.
Yup, this is one aspect. Another is that I'm running different tires in reality (Yokohama Advan A052's) that are known to be very strong longitudinally. Another is that the fundamental balance of the car in the sim isn't quite there for me: to alleviate steady-state and on-throttle understeer I had to shift the balance via roll bars toward front end grip at the expense of the rear. Plus the diff doesn't hook up on throttle application quite as well. This combination of factors is more evident here at Sonoma than at Laguna Seca.
is the AC car physics and feel of the car similar to the real life?
Close. Close enough that it's a useful training tool in fact, which was always the goal of sim racing for me. There are some differences in terms of balance that I hope the mod developers can sort out (see my other reply about this above).
That was a proper lap, well done 👍
Within 0.2s of Randy Pobst in a Ferrari 488 GTB!
You're right! To be fair, that lap was pre-repave. I expect to go faster still given the opportunity (clear track).
good lord that braking into turn 1 in real life! 😲 140 to 45 in what 4 seconds?! my brakes can't handle that! 👏🏻👏🏻
When you put it that way... Yeah, it's a lot!
clean one
I literally just got done driving the 718 Cayman GT4 RS at Laguna Seca like 30 seconds ago on AC lol
It’s not a bad combo ;)
That's great comparison! (Btw if u press F6 in AC you can select the same onboard cam view as the one in your irl onboard)
Damn, you’re right! Next time…
these cars are generational great
It's nice to see a comparison from a real driver of a gt4 rs against AC, I am impressed how accurate it came!
Me too. If not for my mistake IRL through the corkscrew the two laps would be essentially identical. Before the repave, Laguna Seca in reality was never as grippy as in the sim. Now it seems like they’re close.
Nice run
Thank you! :D
Nice driving. I’d get lost!
How did you get all those cool gauges on your screen? I use a gopro 8.
I use the RaceChrono Pro app for basically all of my timing. It pairs with a GoPro for video, OBD2 adapter, and external GPS (RaceBox Mini). Great setup.
