The teletype sound WCBS used - recorded in-house in 1972 in their teletype room on the 16th floor at Black Rock, encased in glass - sounded like a preponderance of Model 28 KSR's in a corner of that room. It sounded crisp, precise, elegant, classy, and indicative of their Paley-era reputation as the "Tiffany Network." (And having heard the main models used - Model 15, Model 14 reperforators, and Model 28, as on many YT videos of such machines reactivated - I could detect it sounded more like Model 28's than the earlier ones.) That sound as heard behind their anchors for years, disappeared in 1986.

I miss them all.

It's too bad they didn't get an air sample of that studio on the last day. I really wonder what it smelled like in there. I think indoor smoking was still legal in 2000 in NY, wasn't it? But, thinking of all of the chain smoking of people in close quarters that went on in there for decades that would have accumulated in sound deadening insulation and equipment racks, plus all of the dust that would have accumulated in so many places. With all of the wiring in a place like that, you just can't move stuff around to do any kind of deep cleaning. Probably a smell that will never be smelled again in history.

Wow thanks for posting Wayne make sure appreciate what a great job everyone at WCBS did back then without modern technology it must have been a lot harder but you guys made it look easy. Everyone will be truly missed what a shame I want to see made the decision to shut CBS down without looking at this video and seeing the hard work that everyone put in over the years I'm surprised they gave you two weeks notice. I hope they don't succeed at half the higher everybody at CBS back again with raises Jared besides you guys gave the sports anyway thanks for the video wishing everyone at WCBS 880 the best hope you guys get back on the ass soon I miss you already

What was up with Black Rock last day?

Reminds me of when I started in radio in the mid 90's. Carrying a boatload of carts for a newscast. No automation back then and live jocks, none of this voice tracking from someone in Timbuktu!.

So so glad a sports station will be taking over. After all, we need more sports. 57 sports stations aren't enough. If you are stuck in traffic, I mean who cares if these guys tell me different ways to get home safely. Id rather hear the fu@@@ng score

The teletype SFX heard over Michael O'Neil and Judy DeAngelis in the WINS segment came from Track B14, "Teletypes," of the 1964 Elektra album "Authentic Sound Effects Vol. 2" (EKS-7252), from the days when WINS broadcast in AM stereo. They would use a loop from that right up to early 2020.

Neat to see the reel to reel tapes. I'm 60 so I know what they're all about. :)

Absolutely love this Wayne, so glad you were able to capture the history of WCBS Newsradio 88, a big part of the soundtrack of my life. I will miss WCBS, certainly for the news but especially for the fun way it was presented. It really feels like you, Paul, Craig and the gang are a part of the family.

You remind me of my brief time in radio in high school and college. I’ve never lost the bug and love of it. You did WCBS. Well in your years there.

Hard to believe this all ends in six days. WCBS Newstime is almost up. A real loss.

This was before the days you would have to issue a disclaimer saying "hey, You know that WCBS station that we are framing as better than the WINS station? Yeah, it's because the CBS letters in front of their station and our station belong to the same company."

WCBS 880 AM is part of the fabric of New York City and America, as well as the globe. I guess 1010 WINS AM and 92.3 FM will be part of the fabric of NYC and the globe.

Great trip down memory lane! Love the local scenes & graphics mixed in. I worked weekends at the Blairstown station in the mid 80s to early 90s. We once met at a reunion that Patricia Judge coordinated.
