Welcome to my channel dedicated to astronomy & photography of the night. I do my best to give hints & tips on photographing the night sky, how to plan Milky Way landscapes, spectacular moonrises & moonsets + anything else loosely related to the subject. I also do reviews on some of the gear that I use.
Saturn at Opposition: Don't believe the Media Hype!
Saturn reaches opposition on Saturday September 7th 2024, which means it is exactly in line with the earth & sun, meaning we get to see it at it's brightest & fullest. The headlines in the media, however, appear to give the impression that it's the only time of the year to see the planet, when it visible for half of the year, but is only at exact opposition on one day annually.

Join me as I go to a star party specially for the Perseid Meteor Shower in northwest UK. Will we be able to spot many of the meteors, or will clouds spoil our fun?

A most epic display of aurora in the UK
Переглядів 2,4 тис.3 місяці тому
Did you see the spectacular display of aurora on Friday night and Saturday morning? The UK was treated to a stunning display of the Northern Lights on Friday & into Saturday morning as massive solar storm slammed into the earth's magnetic field, creating a powerful aurora that was more easily visible in UK than it was in Iceland or Norway. More storms are forecast for the rest of the weekend, s...

I witnessed my 2nd total solar eclipse over the city of Dallas in Texas, almost 7 years after seeing the Great American Eclipse of 2017 from Casper Wyoming. This eclipse laster longer at 3 minutes and 40 seconds and I think it was more spectacular the the event in 2017 which lasted 2.5 minutes. You can tell how excited I was, but it was also quite stressful because we had the threat of cloud al...

Thanks for that Stephen, very interesting 👍👍
Thanks for sharing much appreciated
More accurate would be "Don't believe the Mail" :) (No, seriously, don't believe the Mail, ever.)
Saw star link last week amazing line satellite’s
Well that explains why I couldn’t see the rings when I photographed it on August 30th with my 150-600mm, could see the banding but no rings. I’ll try again in March. Cheers Stephen 👍🪐
Well done on all your subs you deserve it 🎉
Thank you so much 😁
Hi from hull UK, liked and subbed
Thanks 🙏
They're doing clickbait for clicks
Learned loads already thank-you Stephen.
Ooooooerrrrrr! Matron! First time I've been on your Starman Channel Stephen.😂😊 I have subscribed too👍
Welcome aboard!
@@starman1969 Thank-you
My first one I've watched from u another classic Stephen anyway 😊 enjoyed the fireworks from Poland 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it
Don't believe anything you read in the Daily Mail .
Should be renamed Daily Fail
Thanks Stephen you are correct the media has a lot to answer for 😎
Your first mistake is taking anything the Mail Online (Daily Mail) says seriously. They just churn out false news articles one after another.
Let me let you into a little secret mate .......nothing....repeat...nothing revolves around the Sun.... the Sun and Moon and everything else revolves around our geocentric beautiful "FLAT EARTH" !!!!!!
Should read ," read this article ,it's your once in a year chance of the daily heil getting the facts right "
I just realised ( off subject, sorry ) you have gained thousands more sub'ers since I was last here! 🤩 Well Done my friend! Wes, Liverpool
Thanks pal

Hi again Mr Starman! I've not been here a while! Mate the mainstream media would sell their own grandmothers for a story! They're awful! 😂
All the nonsense about super moons especially when they are now given names as if they are in the slightest bit significant does my head in. When did all this nonsense start, it never used to be like this when I first took an interest in astronomy sixty years ago, except perhaps for the occasional alarmist stories relating to nearby asteroids. Then again this hyping up attitude is not just reserved for astronomy, as an angler as well as having an interest in astronomy I note that the media have now taken to renaming dogfish as cat sharks, I suppose they must think it makes the species sound more interesting to the general public. It was cloudy last night where I live but I did see Saturn on Friday. I also live at 53°N and have a mostly unobstructed southerly aspect so I expect to be seeing Saturn on any clear night between now and the end of the year. Headlines relating to comets and asteroids are invariably well over-hyped by the media too.
The Supermoon headlines are really hyped up, as if the moon is ginormous, when you can’t really tell the difference by eye.
I only believe The Beano.
😂
What ever the Mail says the actual truth is the precise opposite ..Great video by the way
Thanks.
Hi Stephen, thought I saw you walking along Queens Promenade just now, Sunday 8th September around 10:45ish. If not you, someone looking very much like you with the same sort of cap on !
Might have been old Blackpool Biker.
- he was pushing a double buggy with 2 young children in it! You must have a double 😅
Sadly the days of newspapers employing a dedicted 'science correspondent' who actually knew what they were writing about have long gone. These days it's someone with a media studies GCSE and 5 mnutes on Google 🥲
You called it Stephen “ the planet isn’t moving” just like the Earth
I hate these click bait type articals! Thanks for explaining to everyone big man! Clear skies bro
Thanks.
Do something different your always in blackpool
What?
Did they not do this last year with Jupiter
Most likely, and they'll do it again next year.
Have you seen, Symbols of an Alien Sky? Great videos on why Saturn was worshipped as the sun thousands of years ago.
Cloudy on my eastern side of the island tonight but i have seen Saturn about 100 times this year depending on your light pollution to the south you can see Formalhault the lowest first magnitude star visible from England roughly under it but much further down.Due to light pollution around the mouth of the River Tees i need binoculars to pick out Formalhault.Jupiter,Mars and Uranus are coming up over the sea at about 23hr.and very nice watching them rise.
I must check out Fomalhaut if I get chance. I have seen it from Tenerife, but not sure if I've seen it from UK.
A bit lower than Antares gets but in a way easier to see as it's at a darker time of year.
Heard somewhere that Saturn will soon loose its rings or they will no longer be visible. Don't know how true that is.
It won't be happening anytime soon, if ever.
@@starman1969 ... Yes, I just looked it up on Nasa, they will disappear completely in 100 to 300 million years. So none of us will be around to worry about it. 🙂
Thanks Stephen for the information
No probs Richard
👍👍
Hello mate, i thought id type in 'saturn today', because i read the daily mail today and saw that article, and not only is it cloudly here in the cotswolds so you cant see any stars at all, but saturn is bloody hard to see even on a clear night! The papers do write some codswallop! Good video by the way.
Great Starman vid ranting
Typical media hyping everything up which is why I don’t buy the tabloids 🤨
I can imagine there being a lot of cults watching the moon lol
why? lol I image/view the moon often. Experiencing a full moon cycle is primo! But very hard to do with clouds :(. Clear skies!
Awoooooo, awoooooooo. 🐺 ..... 😂
I posted my comment wrong, I meant there'll be some space cults worshipping the moon and Saturn aligning lol 🙏
Remember as a kid in the early 70s, watching Saturn rise from behind the moon with my new birthday 60mm refractor. Wish we had the cameras then we have today, it was stunning, Great rant mate, ha ha. Cheers.
I must try photographing the planets agin using my telescope and astronomy camera. It's years since I did that.
@@starman1969 would be great
Would be great to show how it is done, even show how and what is needed to do it using a phone camera. @@starman1969
U got me look up at the stars .as I love u on walk on the wild sided
I will take a look stephen x
Great stuff. Let me know if you manage to see it.
Newspapers invented click bait many, many years ago when it was called sensationalism. 🪐 👀 😮
Hope all is good mate 👍🏻
Hate when media does stuff like that. The worst is when they word it so that people think an asteroid is gonna hit us, when in reality the closest it gets is still thousands of kilometres away! Apparently if Saturn were shrunk down to the size of a basketball, then the thickness of the rings would be about 1/250 the thickness of a human hair, so I guess it's no wonder the rings appear to "vanish" when completely side on, to us.
It's become a regular occurrence with the media now, practically every day.
I must get some photos of the rings now, while they are still open. next year I will follow up with an image of them closed up, or invisible!
@@starman1969 That would be good to do a video on. Maybe get pictures each month to show the progress of the rings gradually thinning until they vanish.
@@mikkdc Good idea. I’ll dust off my Orion Astro camera which I won for the Sky at Night Mag picture of the month in 2014. Hope its compatible with my latest laptop 💻
Hi Stephen, a great video. Thanks for giving us this information. See you next time.xxxx
Glad you enjoyed it Jean
can u do more andromeda videos ?
i do enjoy this kinda format for ur videos as well also , i wouldnt mind tuning into more of this kind of video .
I'll try to do another video on how to find the Andromeda Galaxy
thanks Stephen for the video
Hey Stephen, been a while since you've been on as Starman. The sky is cloudy here in Glasgow so don't think I'll see it. So the media have made out if you miss it tonight your going to wait until next year. Would love to see it but don't have a telescope 😭
It's clickbait!!
Hi Stephen, good to see Starman 😊
Thanks Hazel.
You need to try The Hare and Hounds in Werneth Low, great sunsets and moons! X
Just checked on Google Maps. Looks epic!
