Known in the real world as Keith and on Flickr I am skida.
My adventures in shooting with old film cameras, mostly 35mm, with maybe the odd video of riding old motorbikes. I have been shooting as a hobby since about 1973 and have used a wide variety of cameras. I class myself as an enthusiastic amateur photograph taker and I am always happy to learn new stuff.
The program for 2024:
Sell some of my cameras and buy some more.
Live forever - it's working so far.

Using a Light Meter in Newcastle City Centre
There exist three models of the Selfix 16-20, Model I with 4 speed shutter, was made in 1951 (made by Barnet-Ensign-Ross) Model II dates from 1951 to 1954, and Model IV with 8 speed shutter dates from 1954 (made by Ross-Ensign). Lenses were Ensar, Ross Xpres, and Rosstar. All three lenses are very good and are coated. The cameras have internal synchroflash contacts. In 1951 Model I cost Pounds 17 14 10, Model II cost Pounds 26 10 4. In 1956 Model IV cost Pounds 17 11 0. When an exposure has been made, always wind on the film, to avoid double exposures. Black & white photos will be improved when using push on yellow and/or orange filters.
Thanks for the extra information! Mine is the model one and I am pleased to say everything works. I just need to sort out reliable 120 scanning. Cheers, Keith
I've not been to Saltwell Park since I was about 10. Nice to see it again, I guess it will have changed a bit. The shots looked good, and I'm interested to see your photos from Moffat.
Thanks Andrew. My good lady has to go and take care of her elderly mother every morning and it has meant that most trips have been rushed to fit in an afternoon. This Moffat trip has become very necessary for her as she is totally stressed out. I am looking forward to taking photos, but a restful couple of days is the main objective. Saltwell Park was very impressive and kept so much better than Leazes Park in Newcastle. Cheers, Keith
Hi Keith, lovely photos. Have the 50mm F1.4 in both FD and EF mount. Find the FD mount is the better lens. Enjoy your Scotland trip.
Thanks Andrew. The lens is definitely one of my favourite 50s. Cheers, Keith
Enjoyed the video and photos Kieth. Have a good trip to Scotland and I’ll look forward to the follow up videos 😊
Thanks. We need the rest and the weather is looking like it may be kind to us. Cheers, Keith
Another good video make even better by using a great camera. (Love my A1!)
Thanks Ray. It is a great camera and I love shooting with it. Cheers, Keith
Moffat on a Friday night, full of tanked up young farmers; 6'3" and dimmer than a 40 watt bulb ... just so you know 😐
Hopefully they won't be out on Tuesday and Wednesday nights Iain. Lady Oldun would sort them out anyway! Cheers, Keith
Enjoying your videos. Harry in Ashington
Thanks Harry. Making the videos has been an enjoyable retirement project. Cheers, Keith
Glad the C41 turned out fine. There's always a little hope over experience with colour film and development, especially if its out of date. The joys .... 😒
Thanks Iain. i'm glad I had another go as I did suspect the Gold 100 was totally kyboshed. I bought it about 12 years ago, already out of date and it came from Greece, so I guess it has also been through a few Customs X-ray machines. I was a little downhearted but that's all behind me and I have a couple of new, old cameras to try out. Cheers, Keith
For a point and shoot the shots weren't bad especially if shooting dx coded expired film, Keith. I must send off my two films I finished a while back. I hope you haven't binned the aps cameras - there is some interest in them despite a reducing amount of film in circulation.
Thanks Andrew. I won't bin the APS cameras but I will make an announcement about them in the next video. I don't know if they work as I haven't got batteries for them but the compartments look clean. I think I am going to be buying some fresh colour film as I want to see some decent quality results from my C-41 developing. Cheers, Keith
I'd say that roll came out pretty well actually. I use the Bellini C41kit, the wash at the end ,once done i just l hang em up and there's not a mark on em ..if however i squeegee them i get scratches and water marks.. Emulsion must be a bit more delicate than the usual BW ..
Thanks Mark. I agree that colour film seems to need a lot more careful handling than B&W. I am a novice with C-41 so I'm sure I will mget a decent handle on it as I progress. Cheers, Keith
Ah the joys of job Lots off the bay. That Nikon is probably worth what you paid for the lot.
Thanks Jim.The Nikon was bought independently a couple of months ago for £13. I will be revealing the latest ones when I have the batteries. Cheers, Keith
Hi Keith, just found your channel and like the easy approach to your videos. I too am an Oldun (75) and still enjoy film photography. I started with a Zenit E in the mid 60's and upgraded to a Canon FTb in '72 - it was like going from a tractor to a sports car! I remained a Canon man from then on. I now have a reasonable collection of various format cameras with an outing for one of them each week (I try not to have a favourite, but I do love my Canon A1 and T90!). Keep up the good work. PS I have subscribed...
Thanks Ray. My main focus (ha!) these days is 35mm film and I find enjoyment in using most cameras. I recently picked up an A1, which was my first Canon manual focus and I have to say it is a great camera. I would have answered earlier but I was able to get out with 2 cameras today for the first time in a while (video will follow). Thanks again, Keith
Thanks for sharing your experience with filters. I have an Olympus M1 Mark III and there ate built in color filters for black and white. Mostly I use the color filters from Silver efex pro. Best regards
Thanks for joining in. When I made this video it was my first "filter experience" and now I try to remember them when I shoot. Cheers, Keith
Thanks for being so clear on the price issue. I'm amazed at people's comment on prices. They really expect a brand new camera that costs the same as a second hand one from 40 years ago, when those costed as much or even more this one does back then! Same thing with the new Rollei 35AF. Complaining about a potential 800€ price tag, and completely oblivious to how expensive Rolleis were back when they were new!
Thanks. I think Pentax have done the right thing - release a camera at the fastest growing area of the film camera market and if successful then develop a more serious product. Second hand Olympus mju II cameras are selling to this market for £300 plus and they aren't as good as the price suggests. Cheers, Keith
It's always good to get your groove back! I just ran my first roll of Ilford Delta 3200 through 510-Pyro. Good stuff but my old stand-by is Rodinal.
Thanks Steve. This journey on youtube where I have started developing B&W then C41 has had a few setbacks, but the comebacks have all been great. I have yet to try Rodinall and that will probably be my next purchase. Cheers, Keith
Great you've got your mojo back!
Thanks Edward. It's great when things go well. Cheers, Keith
The image with the wind turbine and the ship as a juxtaposition is a ripper Keith. How us humans will use wind.
Thanks Darren. My thought was wind power, old and new. Cheers, Keith
New pictures look great! Enjoy the Minolta :)
Thanks Man! I'm really having fun with it. Cheers, Keith
You are spot on with comments about the Pentax 17 there's a lot it's not, but the one thing it is, is its a brand new quality film camera and running something like Delta 100 film through it should easily make 8x10 or even A4 prints at half the film cost, compared to full frame.
Thanks Stephen. Yeah, the examples I saw had great colour rendition and sharpness and a bit more grain, so I think we will see some super shots coming from owners soon. Cheers, Keith
Keith, don't give up on the c41 just yet ..being doing mine for the last 6 months. Apart from 1 lost film ,developer was shot everything good .. In fact I find it easier than b/w . Great vids by the way 👏..
Thanks Mark. I haven't given up on C-41, just having a pause. I'm going to shoot another roll of Gold 100, as I can't understand how I shot one two years ago (my first video) and it turned out great. Cheers, Keith
I just use Calibrize, a free downloadable, to calibrate my screen, been using it for over 10 years, works fine. I have to be slightly careful with gamma and all that as it brings on migraines. Photo's look crisp. That's exactly where the Bounty came in (on the back of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies) some years ago. Sadly I heard it sank off the east coast of the USA in a storm, taking some of its crew with it. As for the Pentax I'm sure the company did plenty of market research before putting it into production and there's very few digital cameras you can buy for £$500 new ... will I be buying one, maybe ... in 2042 !
Thanks Iain. My screen, an iiyama ProLite E2483HS is already set to maximum brightness, so no calibration to be done. Cheers, keith
Pleased to hear you're a happy photographer Keith, the shots looked good. As for colour and contrast shifts, I find our TV is very different to my laptop, phone and pc monitor. My Pentax also got lost in the post, perhaps we should complain :)
Thanks Andrew. We must have the same postman. I really can't understand why so many people have been complaining about it being too expensive, unless it's because they weren't on the freebie list 😄. Cheers, Keith
I've noticed the light levels are different when looking at my scans using different devices Keith. Anyway those scans seem to be spot on looking at them on my phone, as we are having a short break in Wales so I'm using my phone. I pal of mine once mentioned that even without filters when scanning negs the scanner always manages to define the clouds and it's something I've noticed too. In the old darkroom days it would require a bit of dodging to get effective clouds. Keep safe👍
Thanks Mr Leica! The clouds certainly came out well, even the shots without a filter. Enjoy Wales and may the weather gods be kind to you! Cheers, Keith
@@theoldunsshot1005 Mr Leica 🤭 other models are available sir!
In 68 I bought a Zenith 80 for £150 with two mags,, Later bought a wide angle AND a telephoto (champagne bottle size nearly!) fot another £150 at a clearance and they were brand new. The camera itself I see is worth £400 odd secondhand on the Bay..Shutter really a CLUNK! when it fires....Takes a Hassel Polaroid back and Hassel mags (with a slight mod to them)
Hi Ross. No-one would accuse Zenit of being refined cameras. I have a Zenit TTL which I have a love-hate relationship with. Cheers, Keith
Hi Keith, love a yellow filter! Great images. Done exactly the same check as you on the Pentax 17 price with Wallace Heaton and the BOE inflation calculator. I'm amazed that Ricoh/Pentax have managed to produce a new film camera at that price point.
Thanks Andrew. The P17 isn't exactly aimed at me but I'm sure I would have fun with one. Cheers, Keith
It was the BSA Gods Keith. My WW2 era M33 500cc OHV with it's unique police department stamp on the engine casing, fully original and running was basically stolen during Covid with these country lockdowns. Nice pics and Happy Days again mate. Great shots.
Thanks Marco. I have had quite a few modern Triumphs but now running a 1998 Yam Fazer 600. Bad luck getting the Beezer stolen. Cheers, Keith
When life throws you lemons, HP5 with a yellow filter always makes sadness go away. As for the Pentax 17, it's a great camera from Ricoh Pentax and demand has far exceeded their expectations. They can't make them fast enough!
Thanks Jim. The combo certainly made me smile. I sincerely hope that the 17 gives Pentax the impetus to develop a full frame "hobbyist" camera. I wonder how many of the doubters would have loved to have received a "freebie". Cheers, Keith
Better luck next time Keith. I'll have 2nd thoughts now about buying out of stock color film too.
Thanks Marco. I have had a pile of expired film for a while and decided to start C-41 mainly to use it up. I may discard the Gold 100 (or sell it on ebay 😄). I still have some less old Agfa Vista 200 and Kodak BW400CN which I may try out soon. Cheers, Keith
personally i really like that town photo. Great video sir . Thank you for your work.
Thanks Eric. I was just disappointed that the Gold 100 colours and lack of grain didn't show. Cheers, Keith
Whoops, looks quite cross processed. Quite unusual for Kodak Gold 200 to come out looking so blue. Although if you don't know for sure how the film was stored before you got it then it could simply be that. If you haven't thrown the developer away yet you could test develop a few frames at a slightly cooler temperature to see the result. Best I can offer I'm afraid 🤷♂
Thanks, Iain. I got this Gold 100 in a pack of 24 some years ago off ebay. It came from Greece (so must have been x-rayed). Previous rolls have turned out OK and I even featured it in my first ever video here. I shot it rated at 50 ISO this time and the only thing I did different this time was a pre-wash. The negatives were quite dense as if overexposed and the edges round the sprocket holes were also very dark. I might try another roll before discarding the developer, just in case it was a rogue roll. Cheers, Keith
@@theoldunsshot1005Sorry Gold 100, I'd forgotten they used to make it in 100. I'd be using it to experiment a little then. Shoot it at 100, shorten the development time, change the water temperature ... presume its going to come out knackered and you won't be disappointed. It can be a bit freeing to just say 'hey ho, lets see what happens' and use the knowledge to improve development on newer 'better' film. Development is a whole different set of skills to just getting it right in camera, as I'm sure you're aware. It always reminds me of Robert Capa's D-Day photos. Great photographer, good camera, right place, right time ... photo's developed by an inexperienced idiot in a darkroom in the States; can't have everything 😒
Keith, you should have just said you were becoming a hipster and said you'd shot some lomography colour shift film instead. Unlucky with the chemical contamination, though.😮
Damn! I never though of that! Maybe I should get some Grecian 2000 for my beard too. 🤪 Thanks Andrew. keith
Hi Keith, what a shame, image looked really good.
Thanks Andrew. At least it worked first time round which encourages me to get new C-41 chemicals. Cheers, Keith
Very nice video. How do you like 510 Pyro?
Thanks. I like the look that 510 Pyro gives photos, for example capturing subtle detail in near-featureless cloudy skies. Unlike some, I don't find it difficult or messy to work with. One negative aspect is that I don't think it gives a sharp look like some of the "grainier" developers. Cheers, Keith
Awesome! I have been doing the exact same thing this Spring. My sister and I also spent several weeks traveling around trying to locate the burial sites of all the family we could find and photographed all the info we could. Thanks for sharing. Nice to know I am not alone on this type of documentation.
Thanks Terry. I have always been interested in where I came from and I have also done a bit of gravestone hunting. Cheers, Keith
Interesting family and social history
Thanks Kevin. I find it fascinating. Cheers, Keith
Wonderful stuff Kieth. Yours is my favourite channel to watch on UA-cam. Encore!
Thanks. A comment like yours is helpful when I'm suffering from self-doubt. Cheers, Keith
That was fascinating! Thank you.
Thanks. I keep trying to spend more time on the family history and I enjoy finding stuff like this. Cheers, Keith
Interesting video, Keith. We have quite a few photos from my grandparents and great-grandparents, like your only a few studio images. At the moment, I need to get my folks to identify who is in them, especially the more distant relatives. It's important to know where you came from, I think. Great photo of young Keith at the end.
Thanks Andrew. Sometimes it is a struggle to come up with an idea that could be interesting, and then one just drops into your lap. I've always found family photos interesting and it can be rewarding to search for the background info. I guess I was a good looking kid, so I don't know what happened since 😆 Cheers, Keith
Great stuff Keith. Really enjoyed the video.
Thanks Marco. Keith
I've become the de-facto family historian. I think I've got copies of most photo's on my father's side, but as its a working class family there's nothing before the thirties. Have less of my mother's side. I remember more photo's from my childhood of my grandparents on my mother's side but when both my parents passed away my mother's family photo's weren't there when we cleared the house. No oil paintings with stately homes in the background though, thankfully I'm working class through and through, nobody in my family made a fortune out of trading slaves ... thank goodness.
Fascinating Iain. I have inherited family trees from both sides of the family and it is rather surprising that on my father's (working class) side we are actually descended from Robert the Bruce, though we seem to have fallen from grace about 5 generations ago. Cheers, Keith
Nice video. Love the cat! 🐈
Sox says thank you! Cheers, Keith
I had a Minolta SRT 101 as a teenager. A few years ago I decided to start getting back to film and bought an XGM. It's a sweet little camera. I've since collected a number of other Minoltas but still have a spot in my heart for my XGM.
Thanks. The XG-M is a class camera and it gave me good service. Cheers, Keith
Great video. Thank you RS. Canada

Love the photo of the railway track, it's definitely got something.
Thanks John. It's a sbject I like and have shot quite a few rail tracks before. I liked this one myself. Cheers, Keith
the ASA setting is nothing but a visual reminder of the film speed inserted.
Thanks for watching and commenting. A lot of manual exposure cameras from this era had a similar set-up - maybe people were more forgetful back then and needed the physical reminder. 😃 Cheers, Keith
@@theoldunsshot1005 Couldn't believe I stumbled upon your presentation coz' only this afernoon I did a clean & lube on one myself - haven't shot it yet but I have some Tri-X 400 at the ready - 15+ years old!!!

Early digital had a hint of film qualities. Nice shots Keith.
Thanks Marco. Some of my favourite shots were taken on a 3MP Kodak compact and a Pentax 5MP compact - the colours were great without any processing. Cheers, Keith
thank you keep going
Thanks for watching. Keith
Far from the first AF DSLR but the first done right .. 🦘
Thanks Roy. Of course the systems that came before were encumbered with the focus motor being on the lens, which meant the lenses would be more complicated and expensive. Minolta obviously thought this through. Cheers, Keith
Pretty amazing, thanks for sharing! Love the photos and nostalgic feel to them. -Eileen
Thanks Eileen. Keith
Well done Keith.
