Tod's Video Games and More!
United States
Приєднався 7 вер 2009
Console games, arcade games, store displays and kiosks! Join Tod as he hunts down the rarest Nintendo, Sega, and Atari games for his extensive collection. Also kick back and enjoy the golden era of arcades as Tod brings back games from the dead and restores them for another generation of play.
Game Boy Display Restorations!
Get your game on with Nintendo's 1989 smash phenomenon, the original Game Boy!
In this video we'll restore not one, but two vintage Game Boy store displays!
First, we have a playable Game Boy kiosk with a base so rotted it out it's crumbling away. The back door's been eaten apart and is hanging on with one rusty hinge.
In addition, we have a store merchandising cabinet that is missing its artwork, glass door, and the necessary innards to entice those customers to come closer and pick out those choice games and systems.
And, in a first for my channel, I'll be doing these restorations for another collector. So I'm under the gun and under pressure to deliver!
In return, I'll get a pair of controller arms for my Nintendo 64 kiosk, which seems like a fair deal. It looks pretty simple...new base for the kiosk, fix the door, add the parts to the merchandising cabinet...but it turns out to be much more of a project than I imagined. You'll see that the devil is in the details, and there are details aplenty!
Of course, we can't just focus on the cabinets themselves. It's a great time to look back on the highly successful Game Boy system and Nintendo's Marketing and Merchandising strategy. And yes, you will get that Tetris jingle stuck in your mind once again :)
For those who love the arcade restoration videos, more are on the way. I have multiple projects going at once and some are nearing completion. But if you like those, you will certainly like this journey as well!

System Table) had nearly succumbed to rust before Tod brought it home and embarked on an int...

Sensational job.
Subscribed! I hope this channel grows and grows. :D

Uploading another right now :)
I dont know anything about arcade machines. I just like playing them. Im curious why you would repair the power supply. Can't you buy a modern power supply for fairly cheap? Did you repair it just to keep it as original as possible?
For some games it is much easier to drop in a modern supply, particularly if there is an available adaptor for the wiring harness. Typically I repair the original as long as it was known to be a reliable supply back in the day. Mostly for preservation but also to learn a little bit more about how they work.
PiPosition is dogshit and doesn't work.
Great work! And that glitchy looking line on the right is normal
Thanks! And I did find that out, which is good to know :)
The amount of work care and precision is amazing
Thanks!
Fantastic! Thank you so much for your time and dedication to restore these beautiful old Arcade cabinets from a golden time in history.
Thanks! It’s so much fun reliving that era working with these games :)
Amazing to see you restore the water damage to the bottom of the cabinet! I didn't think the work you did was even possible! I also really love that you added Satan's Hollow in there! Such a great job!
Much appreciated. Next epic video will go out around Thanksgiving-not as much water damage but plenty to fix!
Nice work! Love these restoration videos!
I have a tron cabinet where the screen has stopped working. Any direction on how to troubleshoot or solve the problem?
I would look for an arcade monitor repair group on Facebook or join the forums at KLOV. If you can still hear the game playing but can’t see it, it can be many different problems with the monitor. Hard to diagnose without going through several steps for sure.
When I went into an arcade, I was going straight for Outrun or Pole Position. Hearing "get ready to qualify", INSTANTLY brought me back to childhood. Great restoration on one of the best games ever made.
30 minutes is usually my max for restorations like this, but I stayed for the whole video. A credit to the content and editing choices. It's great to see a beat up machine be brought back into service. This cabinet will sell all day long for at least $5k, so you did good as both an investment for future gamers as well as a monetary investment of sweat equity.
Thanks so much! I know the restoration videos are long, so I try to keep them moving at a decent pace, which requires a lot of editing for sure. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
INSANITY or Passion? ;-)
Both, but mostly insanity :)
nice work!
I'm 12 minutes into the video and it looks like you have to replace everything. It's just handy for the sake of having a reference to recreate the panels.
Damm music
Yep
Man I need that Machine
Nice video, but dear god the music is annoying and useless.
Sorry you didn’t like the selection, but try watching this with no music at all and you’ll see why everything like this has something playing in the background. It’s more important to the overall effect than you might think.
Thanks for getting back to me@@tcurtis49 and lots of luck with the channel. Instead of music you might consider using "voice over" explanation of what is happening in the pictures. Explaining what you did and how and why and did it work. :) It's basically just a repetition but useful imo. Many viewers don't look at the video 100% of the time as they do something else at the same time. Audio dialog would give us a hints about stuff on the screen that interest us. Also sometimes the audio levels mismatch quite badly and the dialog is low and music is high... which is forcing the viewer to make continuous adjustments to volume. Not to put you down but lift you up! Cheers!
I understand and newer videos should be better. Working to find the right balance. Thanks!
Seller was a POS for raising the price constantly, but great restoration! Amazing work
He was actually pretty cool…a little bartering isn’t unusual here :)
Great Job on this cabinet, Loved Tron , when I was a kid. Very much a classic !!!
Thanks!
Love the show and what you do. What a good job you did on the GAMEBOY display unit you can see your dedication and enthusiasm you have for your projects. Finally getting your bananas at the end was the icing on the cake. Looking forward to seeing the other arcade units and what magic you work on them next. Keep up the good work !! all my best Rob.
Thanks so much! Working on an epic video right now :)
The paint protector did a good job.
This video is the definition of Grit ❤ I also love how you are showing all the setbacks and showing how you still can succeed if you just don't give up 😊
Thanks! More videos coming soon and I had plenty of setbacks along the way. All part of the fun!
WoW! That’s Tremendously Awesome! 🫶🏻🤩❤️✨
Thanks!
This is so thorough. Should be a training film.
Glad you enjoyed it. I try to keep it pretty straightforward and detail the thought process. My next video will cover just about every aspect of a restore, for sure :)
Disco monitor. Awful! Not as bad as the MitsuSHITsi that came in PP @7:40
It was a weird monitor to see but worked out well. I have a couple of the MistuSH!Tas in my yard barn that I tried to fix and are just terrible :)
Resin + saw dust seems like superior to Bondo to me. When would you use one or the other? Asking since I want to repair some broken off corner on my Continental Circus cabinet
Resin and sawdust is probably a bit brittle on a corner that might take shear force. I will usually use Bondo on a corner and sometimes drill in some drywall screws to give it support. The resin is also pretty runny and the Bondo easier to control. If the missing corner is pretty big the best repair is a cut piece of mdf biscuited and glued into place but that’s something tough for me with lack of tools and I’ve never had a Bondo corner break back off, for what it’s worth.
Bro I'm sorry but the Sonic costume at the end is pure nightmare fuel lol
Ugly Sonic is definitely an abhorrence :)
Deoxit is more expensive than gold in the UK and that's just for a tiny little bottle. Total rip off. Contact cleaner works fine and it's a fraction of the price.
Weird that it’s so expensive there. Seems pretty normal here and one can lasts a long time. But in the end I’m sure there are plenty of substitutes :)
You're a true inspiration to many. Keep it up!
Amazing video
I remember playing one of these machines at a Chinese food place back in 98 when i was 14 and it had super Mario and excitebike, i won the super Mario game when i played it and i never seen a machine like that ever before that day so i knew it was rare
Admits it's worthless and should have burned it, but has the cheek to sell it. Disgusting.
hiya have you X or IG? need to ask a question/help if possible?
No, I don’t. Just the e-mail account on my UA-cam page.
@@tcurtis49 ill drop you a email if thats ok.
Awsome work! I think what i woulda done to fix the paint on the sides is, i woulda masked of the artwork with the cars and then just painted the entire sides new, because then you have it all the same color and it looks new and clean! :)
I thought about doing that but it just wasn’t worth it for that particular cabinet. Definitely an option, though!
What an amazing job you did. Thanks for sharing.
Fun Video!
What an amazing job, congratulations!
Thanks!
Hey Tod, love the content and appriciate the time you put into your vidoes. Shame youre located in America and not Europe:( I wish i had your skills and same option for buying stuff on the market. We dont have much here in Denmark.. I have my Time crisis 2 and im happy with that:)
Thanks so much! Yes, I am lucky where I'm located to be able to find a lot of interesting things. But someday hope to travel Europe, especially Scandinavia!
car guy here. don't bondo over rust. . . next time get some rustoleum rust converter paint. seals the rust. then you can bondo or JB putty those spots and it will be a better fix.
Absolutely. I didn’t make it clear that I had treated the rust as best I could-I probably should have said you can Bondo over rust stain. But it would be best to cover that with paint first to better seal. That being said, so far, so good…keeping it in a controlled inside environment sure beats sitting in the rain :)
awesome video
very good state of the art of restoring.
I had notifications on why didn’t it send me this😢
No idea. I know it did send them out to some as my mom got a notification and immediately watched it. Hope you enjoyed it, regardless!
Aaah... I suspect Mr. Swann's kit? :) Right now I am in a queue to get a PC-10 converter so I can use a Zapper and plug in NES controllers. They have a 3D printable file of the PC-10 holster and a holder for your NES controller. I love NES games on arcades, but some games translate poorly to arcade controls. Some like Dr. Mario and Tengen Tetris translate well! I have two of the sealed black rubber Nintendo guns for my PC-10. Sadly, neither work and they are considered unrepairable. They do register the shot when you hit the trigger, but the screen doesn't see the hit.
I'm not sure where the kit design originated, but I got it from highscoresave.com. Seems like there should be some way to make the guns work. My gun on my PC10 does not work with the dark tinted plexiglass in the way but does with it removed. So they are definitely finicky.
for $175 you could of rebuilt the entire cabinet in new wood. The empty cabinet with all the rotting wood was not worth what you paid for it. The original blue light flight stick wasn't even included.
Yes, of course. But that wouldn't have been any fun. It was worth it for my enjoyment, and that's what really matters :)
This channel is a gem in the rough. I don't even think you are under rated, i think you're just undiscovered. You will eventually hit the algorithm. I envy your skills, collection, and most importantly the relationship you and your wife share! The only problem with this channel is your too busy with everyday life to upload more than you do. I really look forward to each new upload. Im constantly going backnand re-watching your older videos. Thanks for sharing your passion!
Thanks so much! Yes, I have too much going on to dedicate more time to the channel right now, but maybe someday :) As long as people are enjoying the videos I'm going to keep making them!
Have you ever played Atari TX-1? I think that was the most impressive of the classic racing games I've ever played.
I never saw one back in the day and don’t think I’ve come across one while collecting. It looks pretty impressive!
Skip the next project and spend it on a wireless mic
I have them. It makes the background much too dull and I don’t like the mono sound overall. I used them in my collection walkthrough video. But we had a real issue with the exchange in the arcade room in this video that our cameras were too close to background sounds-I definitely needed to shut stuff off behind them. It was too late before I had a chance to review the footage.
That's Determination 👍
It took some effort, for sure, but we got there!
