Epic Qix Arcade Restoration!
We're back for another epic arcade game restoration. This time we are featuring one of Tod's childhood favorites: Qix!
This video has everything: a trashed cabinet, the search for parts, sanding, painting, wiring, monitor repair, and much, much more! We'll do stenciling of side art, tube swap the monitor, wire from scratch, and talk about all of the simple-to-learn yet difficult-to-master gameplay elements of one of the all-time arcade classics.
Yes, this is a long one! But it's fast-paced, fun, and (hopefully) entertaining. And, of course, you can split it up however you would like!
If you like arcade games, or restoration videos, or arcade games and restoration videos, then you are in luck. If you like watching Tod face one challenge after another, and often make mistakes that lead to even more challenges, then there is plenty of that here. If you want to see Tod and Cindy completely disassemble a cabinet and put it all back together, then guess what? It's here!
As far as my personal enjoyment, the Tron video comes in #1, followed by the Red Tent Restoration. And Qix is definitely in the top 3. So I hope you'll take that leap and join me in some sparky Qix action!
** If you enjoy the video, please help me out by liking and subscribing. And comments are much appreciated! **
Be sure to check out my other videos, including a two part Carnival restoration, an epic Pole Position restoration, and Sega and Game Boy display restorations. Many more to come! And thanks for watching!

      It wasn’t worth an extra $60-70 on a $2500 total investment…think about that. If he so,d to the other guy (who I know) I would have no Red Tent, no fun restoring it, no video. To save a few bucks. You only live once and saving money isn’t the ultimate goal :)

    1:07:57 I'm sure people have said this, but the lead isn't vaporizing at soldering temperatures. The advice is sound but it's not the lead that's the biggest concern with a lack of ventilation. Nice video!

    • @tcurtis49
      @tcurtis49 2 дні тому

      Actually, nobody has mentioned it. I know the risk is minimal and probably the bigger reason to use the fan is to keep the rosin fumes from irritating. I rarely worry about it as a hobbyist but thought it would be a good general safety point to think about. Glad you mentioned it so I could check out the recommendations on handling solder properly.

    Thank you for the video. Three days ago, I bought a cabinet in very poor condition made of wood, and I was deeply regretting it, thinking I wouldn’t be able to fix it because the sides are very swollen or broken. I see that with a mix of resin, sawdust, wood glue, and filler, it can be repaired, and you’ve given me hope.

    • @tcurtis49
      @tcurtis49 2 дні тому

      Good luck! Also don’t be too afraid to replace the bad wood with new if you have to. I personally like the challenge of repairing it but most people would start new. In any case I hope it turns out great!

      @@tcurtis49 Thank you! I don't have much money or tools to cut wood (I only have a $10 jigsaw). I don’t even have a table to work on the wood; I’ll need to buy a couple of wooden sawhorses. But thanks to your videos, I now believe that with a lot of dedication, effort (and plenty of bondo), anything is possible. :)

    Great video as always. Did you ever do a video on the Battle Zone game that you acquired? You mentioned it once when you were looking back at 2023, year in review. I would really like to see a video series on that game. How about Afterburner? Do you have an Afterburner? Anyway, Happy New Year.

      I didn’t on Battlezone because at the time I thought it was going to be a minimal amount of work. But then had a long process of fixing the boards after they catastrophically failed-I even had to send them to an expert. But it’s great now. I did restore an Afterburner about 6-7 years ago and eventually sold it because I was out of room and it wasn’t getting played. Great game, though!

    When I was a teenager, I worked at a print shop running an AB Dick 360 printing press. One of the jobs that I did was to print the decals for these Tron machines and the action figure packages. Generally, these types of artwork for machines are all done as a 4-color process (CMYK) printing but for Tron we had to print them using actual PMS colors individually. I still remember the headache I had trying to mix that red...it was worse than color matching Coca Cola red. If it was even slightly off, they would reject the entire batch of prints. One time, I had a batch of 150k prints get rejected because of 1 bad print. I had to take all the boxes home and go through them 1 at a time and pick out all the good ones, then print the remainder the next day. Luckily, I only needed to replace about 100 of them due to being the first prints off the line when the rollers weren't completely saturated.

    Axecadia, is about a mile from my house. Nice restore, stumbled upon your video from my fyp. Crazy!!! Currently, I’m restoring a Centipede.

      Axecadia was a fantastic place. I wish I had more time to spend there. Good luck with Centipede-I’ve restored both a full-size and cabaret over the years.

      Haha-well I do tend to take on some tough ones. Hopefully you’ll check out the Tron and Nintendo Red Tent videos-they were much worse :)

      Worth every second :) But not too much of a drag-I couldn’t get back in the high score list myself at the time. But now we both have done it so he has redeemed himself!

    This is so satisfying to watch! But wait….at 1:19:10 you explain that measuring from the 1” mark caused you to cut the door 1” short. But I’d think that it would make the cut 1” long. Like if you looked at the tape and it said 25”, you’d cut a 25” piece. But it’s really 24” because you measured from 1”. Right?

      @tcurtis49 13 днів тому

      I typically measure many times on the actual size, but sometimes mess up the transfer to the board to cut when I mark using the 1” as an edge. I think that’s what happened here :)

    Thank you for posting this. This kind of detail is pure gold! I’m hoping you could offer some advice for a repair I’m trying to make to a Jakks Pacific wireless Ms Pac Man plug and play unit. The base is getting power, but there’s no video or audio output via the RCA plugs. I tried resoldering all the wire connections and replaced the RCA cable with a known working one, but no luck with that. Any ideas are welcome.

      I would guess it just crapped out and the circuit board is dead. They weren’t necessarily made to last forever. )
