We're Nick & Charlotte and these are our adventures in our little orange van where we travel across the UK in the search of whales and dolphins, including our favourite animal - ORCA!
We're not photographers and don't want to be - we just want to show people what amazing animals we have in our waters along with looking back at the amazing encounters we have with them! We show that you don't need professional equipment or to be an 'expert' to do so either!

Watching ORCA at NIGHT in ORKNEY!
We're back in Orkney and have a late night (4pm!) encounter with some of the famous 27s Orca (killer whale) pod including the impressive Bull 72! A pod of Orca had been seen earlier in the day near Shapinsay so we took a gamble and searched and waited around the top of mainland Orkney until the light was fading.
The pod was then seen entering Kirkwall harbour as we were just around the corner! So we quickly jumped in the van and got there as soon as possible where we were so lucky to spot their dorsal fins piercing the surface just off one of the piers as the light was fading.
The light conditions made it near impossible to get any decent footage but we were just so happy to have see them after waiting for them all day, hours after the initial report. The hours of light in December around Orkney are extremely short so it was a battle against the clock and we just made it!
The 27s Orca pod are currently being seen in split numbers, we were able to see 5 members (out of 9) in this encounter and stay tuned for an epic encounter we had with the other members in the coming days around Orkney too!
The 27s pod is one of our favourite pods of Orca to see around Scotland and feel so lucky to have any type of encounter with these amazing animals, whether it be near or far, light or dark!

We set sail on one of our ROUGHEST crossing yet on the NorthLink ferry from Stomness, Orkney to Scrabster, mainland Scotland. Yeah they can't break up a rock
That huge fin belongs to the leader of this pod. As in all orca pods the leader is always a female and she has the biggest fin.
The matriarch is indeed female. However, the huge fins belong to bull orca (males).

Talk about not moving from that rock. They would have to peel me from it. Glad to read the seal made it. I know Orcas have to eat though. Predators actually make prey populations healthier.

How can you see orcas in Orkney and are there any wildlife tours that take people on boats that view them from a respected distance
@dangymking7273 Spend as much time as you can looking out along the coast! They can and do pop up anywhere, anytime. It all involves a bit of luck of being in the right place when orca are in the area. We had a pod in the Scapa Flow yesterday. We watch from land so don't know about any boat companies.
