  • Join us as we do another beach clean, this time at Ackergill, located along Sinclair Bay. This stunning beach stretches from Ackergill all the way up towards Noss Head in the north of Caithness, Scotland. and is also along the route of the famous 'North Coast 500.'
Hopefully this video may inspire you to do your own beach clean to help save not only marine life but all sorts of wildlife that could come into contact with marine litter. Rope, fishing gear and plastics form all sorts of danger to all animals and if we all come together we can make safer environments for them.
When litter free, these beaches are amongst some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole world (minus the hot weather!). Join us in helping protect what we all love.

What a great way to spend a sunny day! I've thought about doing some beach cleans up here in Orkney for a while now but never gotten round to it, maybe after seeing this I will though!

Nice one guys! I did a fair bit of this myself as I was a coastal ranger for 2 years. Always worth doing. Even now on walks I collect junk I see or even when kayaking. It really annoys me that people are so lazy and selfish but, lead by example and maybe we can change that eh :) I always take snips, hook disgorger and a little knife in case I find any wildlife trapped in stuff. Even found a fish on a broken off float once, still alive attached to a hook. The float was shooting about on the canal like a mini scene from jaws and unfortunately we couldn't remove the hook as it was "foul hooked", so I always have the rescue gear now.

Thank you! Ah, sounds like an interesting job, bet you come across all sorts. It's always so sad seeing the effect and destruction it all has on wildlife first hand. Yeah we've seen loads of bottles, discarded fishing gear etc while out on the kayaks also!
Every little helps when collecting it out of the water or on beaches so we applaud anyone that helps to remove it!
Thanks as watching as always 💙

      Good one guys 😊
it’s crazy how much plastic/rubbish are on the beaches, we had a go a couple of times on Anglesey.
Since we got our place we also realised how much plastic we are recycling and so have tried reducing the amount of items in plastic, not always easy.
      Things need to change!

@g.m_unplugged thanks guys, ah nice one! Yeah it's so sad how much there is, we saw so much lobster pot rope lying in the sea (active ones) that just have so much excess rope, right where a pod of Risso's were going through. They're literally just death traps for marine life 😢

Hello Charlotte, how lovely to see visitors to our beautiful coastline doing their bit to keep it that way. We had actually been at Ackergill on 24th May and done a beach clean where we removed 282 lbs (127kg) of plastic from that beach so I am glad you did not find too much more!
It is sad that it does keep coming in though but hopefully with what you are doing it will open a few eyes to the damage that is being causes throwing rubbish, especially plastic, away.
Sadly 95% of the waste we pick up (7.5 Tons already this year) is fishing related. Thank you for putting the creel above the tideline, we will get it some time in the future. The long rubber straps you were finding are actually creel wrappings, they are tied around the creels as protection.

Hello! Thank you so much for your lovely message. You had certainly done a great job at Ackergill before we got there. It is really upsetting how much fishing rope and pots you find along these gorgeous beaches and how damaging it can be for our wildlife. Thank you for your fantastic efforts! 💙🐬
