The very idea that impressionists, expressionists, cubists, surrealists etc. should be denied being called (great) artists is outrageous! Actually I find their art more relatable than those epic paintings from hundreds of years ago. However, I can't bring myself to call an upturned urinal or an evenly red or blue canvas "art". But that is my personal taste. There is just one rather objective thing you don't mention: Those huge epic paintings from hundreds of years ago were in fact very often commissions and they often took years to finish. So a professional artist needed someone to pay him for the months, even years he spent on one painting. That meant artists needed to cater to the wishes of their customers, who were kings and other high status people who wanted those paintings for representational purposes. Those paintings were supposed to highlight the customer's status, origin, faith. And there needed to be standards and schools and academies that safeguarded those "quality standards". It's totally different with artists who create art because they want to express themselves. They can do that whichever way they like. However, I personally would add (so my subjective opinion again): If I as an artist want to express myself and want to communicate my feelings, thoughts, opinions, then I should use a language that is understandable. I would say communication has failed if people don't understand my art. Plus I believe that true art can never be skillfree. I don't think that an idea or an intention is enough.

Pablo Picasso is not my favorite artist. I think that his art was a hit and miss, sometimes very good, sometimes awful, terrible. I have mixed feelings about his quality as an artist. He was a great draughtsman, though. Caravaggio was a worse person than Pablo Picasso; C. was a murderer. However, museum directors are not going to take off his paintings because of his criminal behavior, aren't they?

In my opinion, as long as the character in the show isn’t a specific race, then you can draw them however you want. In MLP, they are random colors. There is no specific race there, so it doesn’t matter if you draw them as black or white. If someone is specifically white, black, Asian, then I don’t think you should change the race. It’s just my opinion, really. I mean- if you do, then I don’t care. But still, I hope you get what I mean. The best example I can give on how I feel is the bias. If someone draws a white character as black because they identify with the character, people will praise them. If someone does it the reverse, people call them racist. I guess I can understand why. There isn’t a lot of representation and people want to see more, but I don’t think you should change the whole race of a character to do that. I just think if you hate someone race swapping a black character, you should hate someone race swapping a white one.

I agree so much with the "art fixing"!! The fixers often ruin the whole vibe, or do things that don't fit the artstyle, or try to make the character "look more interesting" but it just makes them look bland.. also they often fix things that don't need fixing like you said - like changing a head shape/shoulders in an artstyle clearly inspired by cartoons/kids books so they were supposed to look like that, complicating a simple style, or changing a nose that didn't fit the beauty standard But honestly the person who showed off how they improved drawing black people.. I think they genuinely didn't know how to make dark skin look good, I have asian ocs who at first looked white when I drew them until I learned how to properly draw asian eyes in my style

Literally my only problem with drawing poc characters is the exact same as my problems with drawing white characters: I struggle translating almost all hair into my style. Straight, wavy, curly, the only thing I've got down is braids. Which I've seen other artists say is the hardest hairstyle to draw, so I guess I'm just backwards

i just wanted to say, not to nitpick, but saying "POC people" is kinda... clunky, like at 11:25 . thats "people of color people". POC on its own would have done fine, but because we're mainly talking about art, i will add in as a bonus, you can also replace the P in PoC depending on the subject- if the subject is fictional, for example, "characters of color" would be correct, where as "Person of Color characters" can be a bit strange. Of course i will also say, if you are talking about any specific races, its probably best to say that, as "person of color" is a very vague and large umbrella. if youre talking about people struggling to draw black characters specifically, its probably best to say that, for example.
