R v L lapel trap grip
- If they release grip and try to disengage
Then you have sleeve grip and can pass the grip to your other hand to get to their back.
- if they maintain grip but try to push you far away. Then get your elbow under their tricep and lift up to bring them close enough to switch to a waist grip for O goshi to the front or tani otoshi to the back.
If they close the arm space entirely then that allows you to get very close to them and go for a head grip.

Sasae

Sasae 1. Arm collapse O soto to sasae 2. Direct sasae by hitting the lapel grip near your body upwards while pulling ukis lapel. Warning that this works against people who have a strong grip on your lapel, if they let go of that grip you lose too much rotational leverage to finish the throw. 3. Tricep grip sasae - sneaky off center sasae , slide lapel hand down to tricep when getting them to fo...

1 arm fun judo rondori
Переглядів 1745 місяців тому
Had a slight shoulder injury so didn’t make a normal video but was doing some fun 1 armed rondori with my students today. As long as it’s not a huge injury it’s just a way to practice a different set of skills. Just told the students not to grip and yank on the injured arm and everything else is ok.

Sumi gaeshi part (1/2) Sumi gaeshi is a great throw but be careful teaching or learning this with new players. There is more physical danger for sacrifice throws and also newer players tend to use sacrifice throws as a crutch when they can’t figure out what to do or feel stuck. Points you need for a successful sumi gaeshi - head control - close body contact with shoulders and close hips - hook ...

The finer details of how to do the extended arm trap Theory behind the trapping action using the same principle as makkikomi Where to place your chest on ukis arm to create the friction fulcrum, and being closer allows you to push their head with your elbow rather than your wrist. My preference for how to grip to best trap ukis arm. Thumb to me grip.

Seoinage entry against defensive arm post
This is super handy, actually quite similar in the vein of another video about Judo systems in just 3 moves. It didn't occur to me that you could just use white belt throws for one though. Next time I'm taking a white belt through light randori, I'm telling them to do exactly this. They're always confused about what to do, so actually pointing out how to apply what they learned will be huge.
@@TheNEOverse yes this is one of the first sets I teach to give students an idea of how to 1. Get close 2. adjust according to their opponents defense or balance. I also make sure to not allow any drop throws if either person is below brown belt to make sure it doesn’t become a crutch to new players who don’t know what to do yet. Also why is the other video with 3 moves you were talking about? Always nice to see some different teaching styles.
@@Judo_Jon Shintaro Higashi made a vid called something like Judo system in 3 moves. Same idea as what you got basically- have a forward throw, a backwards throw and then a throw to the weak side (ie sasae).
I thought stiff arm was the unbeatable technique, I could stiff arm 2 guys at once with a 3rd guy attacking from the front
this is really helpful, could you make more judo beginner system videos? :)
Currently I have a “beginner judo system” + video planned out to expand on the topic a bit, but a shoulder injury took me out of action for a while, but it will be one of the first when I get back to making videos.
Really good video. I wonder if you would consider getting a microphone to make the sound better. I liked and subscribed!
I’ll look into that. Right now I’m just using my iPhone but the microphone is getting worse. Sometimes I have a student with a nice camera in attendance then I have been using that.
@@Judo_Jon you are very good at explaining the movements, thank you
Realistic and good judo
Thanks for the vid..Glad to see you back! What happened to your arm? Wishing you a speedy recovery 🙏🙇
Got thrown onto my shoulder by someone using a double sleeve grip uchi mata with not enough rotation. So I ended up just being dragged to the ground shoulder first without the ability to break fall. Grade 3 AC injury so not going to be able to play for a few more months.
@@Judo_Jon all the best with recovery, hope you can still share ideas on here. 🙇
It even works with 1 arm. It's gotta be good
What a great video. No wind up. No bs. Just great content. Thank you Sensei.
👍👍👏👏💪💪
Is it wrist to wrist or forearm to wrist
Another good video. Another comment for the Algo. 👍👍
Thanks
I like the first one. It's almost like a makikomi
Damn. I wish you had been my coach. None of those throws were traditional judo throw from the gokyo no waza. (Or maybe I'm forgetting). But dam they all look effective at getting uki to the ground. I just wish I had more time to train so I could get some reps in on these techniques. 😢 Thank you. Great stuff. Happy 4th of July.
These are applications of the judo throws after a specific entry and defense situation. They can all be traced back to traditional throws. A lot of different versions of uki otoshi and O soto gari or gake as well as some O goshi.
Just learning traditional throws is supposed to give you basic pieces you learn to fit into the puzzle of rondori, you you may need to move them around or rotate them to get it to work.

@@Judo_Jon yeah man I stopped doing Judo at brown belt. I know there is way more to it and I love watching videos like this to see it in action. Today I only get to do Judo with a few former Judoka after karate class. Like I said I wish I had more time. And thanks for the reply

Great demonstration, thanks for sharing. You're videos are helping me out considerable 👍🏻👍🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Very glad to hear that you liked the video despite the poor audio quality this time.
@@Judo_Jon helped me significantly with my recent class during Randori 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Cool insight brotha!
Thanks I originally tried this more like your style but got swept or back taken a lot by the better players. So this is what I eventually came up with to take away most of their attack options and make things easier and safer for myself.
Thanks from udalguri B t r Assam . India .
Sorry for the poor video quality, will figure out a better way of knowing where I am in the frame for next time.
Nice
I subbed because I’ve never heard of this. Thank you again
👍👍👍👌
Great tips and grips. I like the wrist one. I'll have to test it out.

This is extremely helpful. I have a good handle on a lot of individual techniques but I never know how to string them together. I will definitely try this out next time in Randori!
Yes I hope this helps for rondori but remember this is still simplified and there are a lot more moving pieces in actual competition, but I hope this can help you start thinking in the right direction.
Nice description 👌 👍
This grip and your seionage grip are great. My students really liked them. You made me look good. Any sasae tsurikomi ashi grips, combos or counters would be great. Thx
That’s great to hear. Where do you teach. Would be nice to know and talk with other judo teachers. I can do a sasae video about what I know about that throw.
I'm in Arizona but originally from Brooklyn. Right now I teach at a rec center but I used to teach at riki dojo usa. Check it out on you tube.
I checked out the channel and like the detailed explanation and non power reliant techniques. So are you one of the black belts Riki uses to demonstrate with or Riki? Either way nice to meet you always glad to talk with more judoka.
Yes I'm his usual uke. Don't stop your videos I really learn alot. I'm into grip changes. Thx Al
Thank you mr
Awesome! Just started Judo and this is immensely helpful, and gives me something to try out in randori haha. Cheers!
i havent even randoried yet and im already looking at countless videos HAHAHAH
Thanks! Interesting approach, I like you make a logical system instead of separate throws or simple combos. Please keep sharing. Cheers
Thanks, and I’m also open to suggestions if there are specific grips or topics people want to see a video on
Yes right on right. I like your underhook seionage grip.
That makes a lot of sense. I will try it that way. Thank you.
Great to see you back, thanks for the video🙏😊 hope all is well with you.
Yes all is well was just very busy with a new baby for a few months, and now things are starting to get going again.
Fantastic news, congratulations 🎇🎉
@shigashi84 The 2 Russian tie sumi attacks were ones I learned from Shintaro higashi’s channel. Thanks Shintaro!
More grip variations. Any 2 on 1?
Are you talking about in general or specifically for this Overhook video? I am more familiar with right vs right situations so I tend to make videos mostly in this position.
Uki otoshi, if they are in a low crouched and bent forward position to protect their legs.
thanks :) do you know wich throws i can use in general if i get the others posture down like this but his legs are too far to reach?
Also a sag koshi garuma where you drop but don’t need hip contact, this one generally needs you to switch to head grip. The other option I know would be a sumi gaeshi from Overhook which I will show when I finally make the sumi gaeshi part 2 video
Very good! Liked and subscribed!
Thanks man!!
First of all try to learn how to do this technique properly. Then practice it and only when you reach a good level teach somebody else. I wanna cry when I see you doing it. It’s not because I want to offend you. Learn can’t be a teacher unless you are on a good level.
Well Finally got enough people to see the video to get my first “you suck” comment. Congratulations to me on the milestone 😂
@@Judo_Jonloved the video and you made it very simple and concise for us newbies to the wonderful art of judo to understand. Keep up the great work!
@@Judo_Jon You know you made it when you get your first hater. Form doesn't mean shit in this video anyway, its about the concepts which you demonstrated excellently. In fact I'm sending this to people.
@@TheNEOverse thanks for the support 🙏
Thanks, this really helped me. A lot of these tricks aren't teached in the judo class because for all the higher belts it is something normal, but for beginners like me it was not :)
Glad to help.
Arigato gozaimasu.. thanks for this.. waiting for part 2.👍🙏🙏🙏
Coming soon! Feel free to make more requests.
Finally got part 2 done sorry for the big delay. Chinese New Year and just had a baby she’s 3 months old now so I’m starting to get back to the videos. If you have any other video requests I’ll probably get to it a lot faster next time.
Great visualization of the concept!
When i do osoto i try and keep my toes pointed down so the calf muscles are tight and gives you more power to reap Ukis supporting leg.
Yea that is a good tip! I usually don’t get to the finer points of a particular throw since I’m focusing on various defensive reactions and responses. Maybe I’ll do a series of videos trying to show the finer details of throws That is also a good tip to make sure people don’t put their foot down on the ground before reaping which is a common mistake for newer players.
Very simple and effective! I'm trying this tomorrow.
Would love to hear how it goes. If it works that’s great if not it’s an opportunity to see how to adjust to be able to finish. Or learn a different kind of defensive reaction and appropriate response.
@@Judo_Jon Surely! I'll report tomorrow. I'm a bjj guy, I had great success in competitions and in sparrings by learning and using judo techniques found on youtube. The one I had most success was the Kesa-Gatame position, that pin caught all my bjj classmates and competition opponents offguard and got me some easy submissions. Great stuff. Subbed.
Kessa gatami is my favorite ground positions. I like the head grab position instead of the standard underhook position. I can often go directly from a head grab throw directly into this position on the ground. I’ll do a video about that and how I work around various defenses. When I find the time.
Found this channel by chance. I love Judo and I can never get enough of watching quality content between sessions This is a great video and as an intermediate judoka I find these tips very valuable and easy to understand Subscribed
I use this head throw all the time. Steve Scott calls it 'kubi nage'.
I’ve also continued to improve these as I teach them and get more experience with it. Like the last entry I showed I don’t reach from underneath both arms anymore because I found that people will frame me out from getting close if they are ready for it. So now I go over the outside are and under the other arm. Never stop learning and experimenting!
Well partly because this is something I picked up from rondori and I’m just trying to figure out this stuff myself. I’m sure other people also figure some of this out intuitively but I’ve been trying to take my experience and try to find the best way to teach it systematically. I think judo has a big gap in its teaching. The hole between kata and forms and full resistance combat. Been thinking of other names for the channel if I change it one day I might go with rondori school. Most of my students are very casual and don’t have the time to learn this intuitively through years of training. So I’m trying to speed up the process.
Actually I don’t know. I originally posted my videos to a Chinese platform since my class is in China. This was one of the free songs my wife helped me select it. I think it’s from the IP man movie so it’s probably Cantonese.
Ah I see. Thanks
Why the fuck was I never taught this? I have a brown belt and never learned any of this.
Cool video
