Welcome to my channel! After a couple of decades working a desk job, I first became interested in woodworking, then metalworking and welding. This channel is partly a record of my journey as I acquire new skills and tools, and partly sharing old ones. Hopefully, you find something useful or interesting. I always welcome questions, useful tips, and constructive criticism. I have no plans to monetize, but comments, likes, and subscribers let me know this isn't a waste of time. Thanks for watching!
Cast Iron Face Plate Build Pt 1
I take a useless cast iron hub that came with all the extra metal when I bought my lathe into a faceplate. First I cut an inch off the back, then mill the back flat on the mill, then back to the lathe to bore out the center and face it. Music is Gouge Away by the Pixies.

In my second bench vise restoration I tackle a Columbian 504 I picked up in my dad's barn. It's in very rough shape, having been used for welding practice, but it turns out beautifully, painted in POR-15 Austin Healy Green Engine Enamel.
Craftsman Table Saw Restoration
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
I picked up a used 1980s vintage craftsman table saw that was badly in need of restoration. This was before I even considered putting anything on UA-cam, so it was mostly stills. Even so, I hope this is educational if you are considering your own restoration. I even build a bracket out of scrap to install a paddle safety on/off switch.

3 Mystery Rods, See How They Run! (okay, just one rod)
Переглядів 312Рік тому
A friend (hi, Ed!) has some very old 6013 and unknown 3/32” rods. He had issues with them and I offered to see how they run on my YesWelder M200. I first expended some of my new Hobart 3/32” 6013 rods to shake out the cobwebs. Then I tried his old 6013 rods using the same settings. They ran okay, with some arc blow, but the slag was easier to chip off than mine; that may explain the different c...

My first bench vise restoration of an Athol 614. I use electrolysis to de-rust, EZ-Weld to fill some holes in the cast iron and have a friend turn some new thrust bearings on his lathe. It was in serious need of some TLC, but is ready for another 70 years of use. I used: Birchwood Casey Cold Bluing
Electrolysis on a Broken French Bayonet

In this video I use electrolysis for the first time on a broken 1866 French Chassepot bayonet. It turned out to be manufactured by a British company called Charles Reeves & Co, which went out of business in 1869. The Chassepot rifle was in use until 1872 and was used in the Franco-Prussian War. This broken bayonet shows significant damage to the grip and shaft, but it's impossible to tell if it...

So, being it's pretty hollow, would advise against the purchase of one? Why do you do the blueing?
Good questions! The new ones, I can’t say, but from what I’ve seen of most vintage vises is that even the “light” ones are tough bastards indeed. If I compare this to a similar modern vise it’s easily as good. Against the Athol, it’s light, but I didn’t get it in pieces, so it had held up okay. The blueing? If I had to do it again, I’d have removed the jaws and blackened them by heating and quenching in oil. That or machines new ones. I like the black oxide look and cold blueing was the only way to do it. Thanks for watching and the questions 😁
I wish Swag would make a metal replacement for the plastic part. Mine broke, and it's been on the list of things to machine for years now. Lol
Same here. It’s still sits on my workbench, more or less unuseable
I did this with some heavy copper busbar I got from a friend. If I had to buy a bar like that, I'd have to take out a mortgage ;<)
You’re not kidding!😂
Nicely done.
Nicely done
Really nice man
@@_BigLife_ Thanks!
That's really neat. Good post.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Like a lot of my one-off projects it was a lot of fun and a neat challenge.

I bought my caveman saw in 06/28/1983 for $289.91 it was a manager special still have the blade gard and spitter Balt gard it serve well over the years I made a lot of nice furniture with it would not trade it in for a cabinet saw it been with me all these years
Thanks for the headache-saving guide.
Hi from UK very nice Restoration, very detailed explanation of what you were doing through out, so much so ive subscribed 😊 keep the format its great 👍 👌
Thanks so much! Appreciate the kind words!
Buen dia amigo digame se puede soldar aluminio con la maquina lincy A C_ 225 gracias y saludos
Rafael, fortunately my Spanish is still good enough to understand you, sin Google Translate 😁. Desafurtunadamente, it’s not good enough to respond in kind. No, the only way you could use it for Aluminum (I assume you were thinking for TIG) is by using Aluminum rods for stick wleding (SMAW?). They exist, they do not leave a pretty weld, and they burn faster than you would believe! However, they will get the job done if you have no other option. Thanks and ¡buena suerte!
Gracias amigo por la repuesta saludo
Great video. Looks like the saw came with an after market fence and like you, I left the riving knife off. It really is a pretty good saw.
Thanks! Yes, althoufgh it was missing the guard/splitter combo. I bought another aftermarket one, but after installing I realized the blade is slightly misaligned. It works for general ripping, but I do need to fix that. Thanks for watching!
Very neat! I will have to tackle a similar project for my lathe soon, i still need a dedicated baseplate for my four jaw chuck. My machine has a very similar spindle nose (in my case a german DIN 800 spindle nose). Will be following along!
Good luck! At least mine is a really common size and even my Atlas/Craftsman can turn an 8 pitch thread.
10” wheels worked for me. I used one 2” swivel caster in the original bolt hole. Everything is level and moves easily.
Very nicely done thanks for sharing
Hi!! I'd like to know if your honda fit is made in USA or Japan? And what's the size of the front wheel bearing? I have a fit made in Brazil and currently I'm having a lot of troubles finding the right bearing replacement because is bigger than the American and japanese versions (or at least that I've been told) but I can't find the size that I need, that's why I ask you about the size your car uses, that can give some orientation. Thanks a lot for your help, greetings!!
I can’t be sure, but I believe it was made in Japan. The MasterPro and Precision Bearing part # is 510091. Dimensions are OD 74 mm, ID 38 mm, thick/height 40 mm. Hope this helps!
@@joeshomeshop thank you very much!! It can be useful, I hope. Thanks for your quick response!! Have a nice day.
Hermosa
I would buy that faucet from you if you still have it! I need the handle section and those parts are obsolete.
I appreciate that, but I think I’ll keep it as the replacement doesn’t fill me with confidence that it will last 15+ years. I’d keep watching Ebay.
Thank you! You made installing my Moen faucet cartridge replacement a breeze!
Good job on the video I know filming and editing these jobs is a pain. I would guess that the bearing wasn’t torqued correctly last time and that is what caused your premature failure. I’ve never seen the cv nut back off like that before. You may have premature failure again with the improper hub installation. It can cause little dents in the bearing races that cause wear. Hopefully you got lucky and no harm was done. The wheel speed sensor never comes out where I live so I unplug it at the wheel well connector and leave it in the knuckle. You just have to be careful when pressing. I’ve had the 10mm bolt snap off before so I try not to touch it. So far I’ve actually had good luck with NSK bearings I have one that has 70k miles on it and its still going. I really don’t recommend cheaper 1 year warranty bearings for this type of job unless you plan on selling the car in the next month.
Appreciate the comments. Yep, I obviously wasn’t paying attention and we’ll be watching/listening for signs of it going bad again.
Bad restoration...talking too much
You’re trying to tig weld brazing rod. You need a flame to braze
Unless you’re TIG brazing, which I was. You can, and I have, done both.
@@joeshomeshop not sure how that would work. I’m thinking melting temp for the different metals involved. I guess I never heard of tig brazing in my 40 year career
@@dalesimonds This Old Tony made a video better than I have the time or desire for ua-cam.com/video/jM2_LBvzg6c/v-deo.htmlsi=ALU6f8-qh4k3E3yx. And then this other guy made one too, in case anyone else also never heard of TIG brazing ua-cam.com/video/nazf5gqJwfw/v-deo.htmlsi=uuEqUVar7pQoz6jl
Joe that lifted off nicely.
Yes, it did. Wish I could’ve have convinced him to sell the rest to me. Whatever they are, they ran very nicely.
My goodness - you've made a friend of me today! I did some repair work on my Aberdeen about six years ago, and I was hard-pressed to remember everything I did. This is video is a godsend -- so thorough and educational. I can't thank you enough!
That’s exactly why I did it! I’m so glad it helped!
I have been wanting to do this to my Record & Wilton Vises. Just curious about the total time the jaws took you.
Oh yeah by the way they look pretty fricken sweet.
Thanks! Maybe 4-6 hrs total…once the saw was done, that is. The band saw just takes forever. I didn’t have access to a mill at the time, and that would have sped things up quite a bit. Good luck with yours!
@@nikonshooter71 five bucks worth of 3/4" dia copper pipe drops. Cut to length, and split down the middle. Anneal with a propane torch, flatten into rectangle and bend over the existing steel jaws. 10 minutes tops. 100% function, 0% bling.
Great video! When the bearing fails if usually damages hub and knuckle parts (fretting is most common damage) so changing the bearing only will cause repeated failure.Based on the experience, the aftermarket bearing and hub are usually inferior quality compared to genuine part and garage press is no match for the factory press with guide rod that is going trough the lower plate. So far getting used knuckle assembly form PYP was the best solution for me (of course I tested it to make sure there is no play or noise
That’s a great point, and something to consider. I’m sure others would appreciate the link if you can post it. I found a good online OEM retailer (hondaautomotivepartsonline.com) and have started to buy OEM in favor of aftermarket. I told my son to keep a very close eye (ear?) on it. Thanks!
@@joeshomeshop PYP is another name for LKQ "pick your part" self service auto wrecking. So I referring to used steering knuckle assembly. The bearing usually fails after significant mechanical impact (including hitting stuck brake rotor or CV axle with the hammer)
@@mkrp4Ah, I got it now.
Great video! Thanks! Hey, that black base on mine is not “snug” on my granite countertop and when I turn it to tighten it so that it is it just continues to turn. Also, the casing you dont think they make anymore, it too will continue to spin. Threads all look fine, not stripped. How do I get the entire unit to be snug / tight on my countertop?
Thanks! I actually don’t know where mine is…probably the attic, but 🤷🏽♂️. Can you attach a couple of photos?
I took a video. Dont know how to attach it
@@JohnDye-p5gpublish it to your account and attach the link. That should work
Okay, I rewatched it and know what you’re talking about now. I’ll have to see if I can find mine to see how it’s supposed to be attached. I’m pretty sure it shouldn’t spin or be loose…give me a few days
@@joeshomeshop I think I got it. Went in underneath the sink and tightened a nut holding the hose to the sprayer in place. It held it all together and loosened over 18 yrs. But now my cold and hot are reversed! Have no idea how that happened or what to do about it, but at least we have a working faucet.
Nice.
Always appreciate comments. Thanks.
NIce build. Considering doing this to my old AC Lincoln. We always called them "R" pins.
It is a tool !and unlike tools of today it was used!!!!!!
True, and it never failed, so maybe “abused” was a little strong. I have another one I’m working on that definitely was abused.
Great video! I think it gave me the motivation I need to restore mine instead of purchasing a new one.
Ive got an A/C Tombstone and another brand thats A/C D/C. Found two used hand trucks. Boom. Done
I have an old Craftsman that I got new in 1994. It wasn't rusted. I cleaned it up, changed the fence to a Delta, changed the pulleys and put on a link belt, changed the plastic height and bevel controls to metal, put on a zero-clearence insert with a splitter. These seem to be good saws compared to the new stuff they have out. You did an outstanding job on that saw!
Appreciate the feedback. I still have a few more things to do, and one is installing a splitter!
I have one to I bought in 1990 I think, the fence isn't so good anymore. How much does a delta fence cost and is it really good?
@@thomasrafferty8250 The Delta 36-T30T3 is the one most people use on these older Craftsman contractor saws. Usually runs around $200 from Home Depot or Amazon.
Excellent job! What brand/model of fence did you install?
I’m still using the Exact-I-Rip that cam with it. It’s not great and I had to reset it because it wasn’t square.
I bought the Vegapro 40 fence around 15 yrs ago for about $240. Some people criticized the quality of construction UT I've not had any issues. Love this after market fence. Like you, I have a link belt. I also use the PALS system for aligning the trundle, and have installed Jerry Cole's milled pulleys. In spite of the 1hp motor being almost 40 yrs old (I bought this saw new in 1984) I electively upgraded the motor to 1.5 HP (bought it online at Grizzly). It mounted just fine but the sears belt guard doesn't fit so I just don't put my fingers anywhere close to the link belt when the saw is on.
GREAT RESTORE!!! BEST I HAVE SEEN ON THIS SAW! I love mine!
Thanks!
Thank you for the perfect repair video! My 13 year-old Aberdeen was leaking at the base; we have dark granite so at first I did not notice the water, but the under cabinet told a different story. Great closeups of how the pieces are supposed to fit together, plus great commentary at each step. The handle had pretty much fused itself to the metal piece you used your punch on, had to hammer that out. Perfect to a T (aside from my having to reverse the cartridge 180 degrees so hot is hot and cold is cold :) No more leak, and I saved several hundred dollars on a plumber. Moen should use your video to replace their lousy kiddie drawings.
So glad it helped!
What did you use to paint
I’m embarrassed to say it was either Krylon or Rustoleum…i used whatever I had on hand
the colour is awful
Like I said, it wsn’t my first choice of color
That is the best looking restoration of a table saw I’ve ever seen!🎉
I loved it 😍😍😍
Great job! Note: the successful restoration channels have no narration. Not the greatest background music either. Wishing you all the best growing your channel.
Thanks!
After watching I thoroughly inspected mine and All was Totally clean..
Can you take apart the the spout hub also? mine is leaking at the bottom where it attaches to the sink. Can't figure out how to open it up,,,,don't want to damage finish
I’m not sure. I have to hunt around for it and the diagram. It may take me a bit, but I’ll see if I can figure it out
Nice vise great job on the restoration, thanks for sharing with us.
