Vintage Guitar Restoration Part 2: Paint, Pickups, Wiring, Tune-o-matic, Bone Nut, Set up, and Demo.
In this video I finish the work on my vintage Teisco Kawai (or maybe Suzuki!) guitar. I match and repair the paint, but keep its patina. I mod the pickups with better shielding, to be less microphonic, and to be hum-cancelling as a pair. I also modify the wiring with a series parallel switch and a no-load tone pot. Then I make a custom brass quick release hardtail that retains the original chrome cover. Plus I install a tune-o-matic bridge for fine intonation adjustment. I also make a new bone nut from scratch. Finally I shim the neck and set up the guitar, then record a short demo. One track is a clean tone with the pickups in parallel, and the other channel has the pickups in series with a bit of dirt.

In this video I refret, and refinish the neck from my vintage Japanese Telestar guitar. I also shave the neck into a more comfortable shape, and convert the zero fret into a more conventional Fender style nut channel.
Vintage Fender Bass Guitar Repair and Set Up (Part 2)
Переглядів 1,2 тис.7 місяців тому
In this video I finish the work on this lovely old Fender Precision Bass from the 1970's. I dress the frets, install a new Switchcraft output jack, completely rewire and test the pickups and electronics, create a bespoke shim for the neck heel, and finally I string and set up the action and intonation.

Gold Anodized Pickguard Quirks
Переглядів 1,1 тис.8 місяців тому
In this Quick Tech video, I'm fitting a genuine Fender gold anodized pickguard to a 1979 Precision Bass. These aluminum scratch plates date back to 1957 and the first year of Leo Fender's redesigned P bass. They were also used in the 80's and 90's with the popular 57 reissue Precision. Weirdly, their screw hole pattern is different from standard pickguards.

Neck Heel Screws or Threaded Inserts
Переглядів 2,2 тис.9 місяців тому
In this Quick Tech video I talk about my approach to using wood screws in Fender style bolt on neck heels. I prefer to coat the threads with thin CA glue, then I also use a small smear of lanolin grease. This is both to lubricate the now harder threads and also to protect the fastener from rust. With these two steps, the screw will always "find" the original thread when you reinsert it, instead...
How To Fit A Guitar Neck And Vinyl Wrap A Pickguard
Переглядів 1,5 тис.9 місяців тому
This is an update on my project Jazz Bass. I featured the neck a few weeks ago when I leveled the refretted the fingerboard. This time I'm fitting the neck to the body (more complicated than you think!),, and using black vinyl wrap on the pickguard. I have made a video about this in the past, but I have worked out a few new techniques for doing this.
Goodbye, Trolley of Doom.

In this video I upgrade my bass rig trolley with new castors, corners and a paint job. I made the trolley many years ago and it had a unique feature that I no longer use. So I wanted to document that before it was deleted forever.

What is the Danelectro Fab Distortion Based On? JHS Pedal Show Mystery Solved! And Pedal Rehousing.
I accidentally dropped a little metal thingy close to my Jackson bass and now it has its first chip. +10 years in perfect shape, guess it's time to learn how to fix that little imperfection (I think I'm the only one who can really see it xD)
Thanks!
Amazing glimpse into the skill and experience needed to be an artist at effectively prepping these incredible musical instruments!
Thanks mate. I still play this bass all the time, although I don't gig with it as much these days.
It seems I have one more DIY project to have fun with. Thanks for the content mate! Greetings from Brazil
Best explanation of noisy pickups I've seen. Essentially, the transference of hum from the body to the circuitry is via an electrostatic route. It's often discussed as though it was electromagnetic.
Great - I very much like the "untamed" resonances tones
Huh... I thought he installed a Sadowsky 2 band pre-amp in Marcus' bass.
Do other countries call it earth instead of ground?
Great tips, thankyou! Thorough
Excellent video, excellent method, thanks for sharing it. Tip for removing seized screws BEFORE it breaks: drill out head with left-hand twist drill bit. It’s a thing and they can be bought. Run the drill in reverse, the vibration, heat and reduction of material will cause the drill bit to actually extract the screw. I have had a 100% success rate removing seized screws like this. I learned that in aviation mechanics.
Thanks for sharing that mate. I'll definitely try it next time!
Help bro I have JBL E55BT .. My JBL can't be turned on, when charging the charge indicator is on and when using the cable it turns on normally.. What do you think is damaged? Thank you bro
Love your trolley ideas for my portaflex sb12 p Jess Oliver would be impressed😊
Yes I've enjoyed watching, Recently I've installed a artec pbass neck pickup and a jazz bass bridge pickup to my first project jazzbass, moment of truth, ived plug it in, to see what's the results,, turn each volume and tone , there a hum, but when I accidentally touched the pole piece of the pickups.. owww much disgusting hum, and I think I need to try reverse it's wiring.. I've done everything.. nothing works.maybe this is my last hope.thats why I need to say this ..thanks a lot sir
The coils in a P bass pickup are wired in series, so it's impossible to have both with their inner windings to earth. So one coil will always hum when touched. So if wired correctly, one coil will be quiet when touched, the other will hum a little bit. I have my P bass with the quiet coil on the E/A side since this is where my thumb often brushes the pole pieces.
What about 9volt 'phantom power'? Since an active instrument must be plugged in, why not power the preamp with 9volt dc phantom power like condenser mics are powered everywhere?
This has been done. I'm pretty sure EMG have or had a system that did that. And probably one or two other companies. I designed a buffer in a phono plug many years ago that was powered by an offboard 9V. And I've made quite a few P48 powered devices over the years. I think the reason it hasn't become more common is that 9V batts are cheap and in most cases, they last for many months, even years in most active guitars.
@@RobMods Or maybe we could use a TRS with phantom 48v power 'resister'd' down to 9volt in the guitar electronics cavity. Be a great upgrade to never need to worry about a battery dying.
WAIT! A _pro_ player playing a squire?!?!? 🤯😂 Gotta say - I’ve got a squire Classic vibe P bass sitting directly next to a couple boutiques that are each worth more than moving the decimal on the squire 😂 A great setup like this makes a massive difference. This is the bass every beginner (and pro!) deserves!
Thank you
Thanks Rob!
Excellent presentation. I've been building for several years and I believe I've picked up more than a few useful techniques from this video. Many thanks!

Thank you Thank you just fixed my headphones now I'm happy the video really helped 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
For your info!!! Yamha OC1 and Korg OCT1 are VERY DIFFERENT pedals! I own both and all their chips are different! They track differently and the tone is different, and I super highly recommend you to buy a KORG! you have no idea how much better it is if you only tried the yamaha version.
After watching the whole video through I am astonished at the level of care you put into this instrument. It's rare anybody puts so much love into these vintage import guitars.. Thanks for showing us all how it's done!
Thanks mate. I'm glad you liked the video!
can i do this mod with active pick ups?
With true active pickups like EMG, Duncan Basslines, etc, no. The coils are sealed, and isolated with an onboard buffer circuit. If you mean an active preamp, but passive pickups, usually yes, you can reverse their phase. However some pickups have an earthing arrangement or metal cover that the coil is wired to.
Instead of flipping the magnet. etc., you could have flipped the whole bobbin/magnet over. Now the magnet is opposite polarity and the winding is reversed. :)
I may well have done that, I didn't really keep track TBH. Nothing was glued, so disassembly was easy. The winding direction doesn't effect the hum-cancelling. As long as the magnets are reverse polarity, and the signal from both coils is in phase, you'll get hum-cancelling.
Lovely work. I’m re fretting one of my guitars currently. I enjoy this work!
It can be frustrating for a while if you are new to it. But once you find a method, tools, and materials/abrasives/polishes that work for you, well then it's sort of zen I guess. I enjoy it too.
Ha. I finally got some motivation to fix/mod one of my guitars from this video. I have this V style guitar which had input jack in really akward place. I didn't want to go drilling the body and luckily I got an idea. I realized I have never used tone pot or neck pickup in this so I took away them both and put the jack where tone pot was. Btw I use nail polish to fix small paint problems. They are cheaper than real paint.
I used to teach bass in a few high schools. Side jacks were a constant problem with the school's guitars. I modded quite a few to front jack over the years.
Love the fix on the knob. I have an old chicken head knob that I may need to use that on. Now so just need something to attach it to!
Stew mac do pre coloured CA. White brown, cream and black. The white is especially handy since I can tint it with just a tiny amount of Feast Watson Prooftint and match off white plastic parts and binding.
Awesome
Thanks mate!
Sweet as work looks mint. I've got a similar 70s Sakai SG I bought off Facebook a few months ago. Great sound, but the bottom two strings sound super muted and dead for some reason. Took it to my local shop and they said the truss rod was "frozen"" and there's nothing they can do. Any tips or pointers on how I could go about fixing it myself?
Dead strings can be several things. It might be the fitment of the strings at the nut slot or saddles. It could just be bad strings. It might be a pickup issue as well. As for the frozen truss rod, did they tell you what they meant by that? Is it maxxed out? Or did they mean they can't shift it either way? Or is the nut stripped?
I personally think it could be the saddles. It's a roller-style bridge and it doesn't look like the thicker strings for in it quite right, they more sit on top of the groove rather than inside it. Also it has a zero-fret which could be a factor. They just said that the truss rod was frozen and wouldn't move, which I can vouch for since I've tried adjusting it and it only moves a small amount in either direction then stops (the adjustment point is by the pickups and it's a rod with some holes perpendicular to the rod, so you'd adjust it more like a lever than with an allen key)
@jordanb325 Sounds like a spoke wheel type truss rod nut. If it is frozen, then be careful trying to turn it with an allen key. Allen keys are hardened steel and will snap easily with a strong side loading. I'd remove the neck, clamp it into a back bow, run a little bit of wd40 into the threads before trying to undo it. If it is still frozen, I'd wrap the nut with a few layers of tape, put the nut in a vice with the neck pointing up, and grasping the neck heel with both hands, undo it like that. Once it's off, inspect the neck bow, plus look into the truss rod nut cavity with a torch to see if it looks like it's bottomed out. It may just need a spacer. Most likely it is fine, and it just needs lubricating. I use general pourpose black grease for the threads, and white dry paste lube for the end and outside of the nut.
@@RobMods Chucked it in the vice, but the threads have ceased to the nut and broke the end of the rod clean off :( . I've seen a Stew Mac tutorial on how I could go about mending it, I'll save this for a rainy day haha. Worst case, it's a good excuse for a new neck! Thanks for your advice anyway though, very much appreciated!
I feel like one day i'll see a video you make a time machine out of some microwave oven and a lawn mower parts 😂

It's my battery which didn't fonctionne bien ( I don't speak english)
I've got an essential tremor, and have been using your blutac workholding for a few years now, it's life-changing no joke.
Thanks for your kind words Joe. I'm glad it has helped you. Notice I also used it for holding that knob when I was filing the repair. There's really no other way to do that.
Ooozes cool Rob. Great job done with care and attention. Wonder who'll be playing this beauty in another 50 years from now? Thats what its all about as custodians Great show as always 😎

Do you ever order custom paint to get a perfect match?
No, but I used to work in a very busy paint store and I had to eye-match house paint samples all day. Mixing stains and lacquers is quite different, but the colour wheel principles are much the same.
Ive got a cheap ibanez electric guitar, and when the strings are off if i touch the posts they flop around. Im guessing its more than an easy fix, will be better to replace? On the b string makes a clunk when tightening string, and it is not the nut ping sound. It is litterally like clunk sound.
How to age and yellow guitar plastic parts 1 = scrub plastic-parts with very fine steel wool and scrub some areas with fine-sandpaper 2 = use a bowl and put in Hot water and 2 black-tea-bags and 1-1/2 table spoon of TURMERIC cooking powder Leave it to soak for 5 hours (no more) --- LOOK at them once every hour to get the correct yellowish old-age look !!! ...if you leave them for too long, they can become too dark yellowish. Take them out and clean them with a paper-towel. Let them dry for an hour or more before you place them back into your guitar. You want all the parts to be completely dried.
Next time please kindly explain! Personally I'm a student
Even strings have some resistance, I wraped copper solder wick to a bit lower resistance(from 1,5 ohm)
white carbon fiber might be classy
I like your end product a lot.
