What is a realistic board foot per hour (bdft/hr) for a manual mill? - Real World Production Test
Please watch this video before buying a manual mill!
In this video I try to show what it is like to run a manual mill, a Wood Mizer LT15 Wide, and I measure what I think are realistic bdft/hr figures to help you determine feasibility of your sawmill business.
Sawmill manufacturers greatly over estimate real world productivity of their mills. If you think you will hit the numbers posted in their marketing literature you will likely be disappointed in your mill or business once under way. After recording this video and after 3 years as a small time sawyer, I think it is fair to say that you can expect somewhere around half of what they are marketing...in even the most ideal conditions.
So many things can make my operation faster: Bigger logs, straighter logs, better loading methods, etc etc. But, I have to say that the weak link is typically going to be one's self in any sawmill operation...especially with a manual mill. There are only so many logs you can roll, turn, onboard, offboard, and stack before you run out of steam. Running at hyper speed to achieve manufacturer figures is not realistic or sustainable for a single man operation.
I still love my mill...If you are thinking of getting into the sawing business, please watch this and remember this is in fast motion and was about 3 hours of work. Can you picture doing this day in and day out for your full time job? If so, try to think of how you will keep logs coming to the mill to keep you running at full tilt. Sawing is not an easy business and this hasn't even addressed the hardest part...selling your lumber! :)
Enjoy the video and please share any tips or comments you have below!

Razor Pocket Mod Three Wheel Go Kart - Built in a Day with Spare Parts
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 роки тому
It's Spring Break 2022 and what better way to spend it than building a homemade go kart. We looked around for spare parts to assemble our go kart and used a Razor Pocket Mod scooter that we picked up at a sale for $2, an old go kart frame that was in a scrap metal pile, and 2 wheel barrow wheels. We were able to use a 24 volt E-bike battery we had to power it, but you could make something like ...
Automated Cattle Livestock Feeder - Feeding Cows with Robots - Hanen LSF-12 Review
Переглядів 3,7 тис.2 роки тому
NOT SPONSORED My life just got so much easier, I was in need of a bulk tank to store more feed now that we have 9 cows. In addition, feeding with buckets was getting more onerous and time consuming so I went in search of a solution. After a lot of research I stumbled upon the LSF-12 Automatic Cattle Feeder from Hanen...and it turns out they were in my neighborhood. I spent less that $6500 on th...
Wireless Skidsteer Attachment Control on Excavator - CAT 306 - Multi-Function Attachments
Переглядів 3,5 тис.2 роки тому
Hey Everyone, I solved the issue of controlling my multi-function skid steer attachments from the cab of my excavator. It involved an Arduino, 4 way relay, an HC-5 Bluetooth module and a simple android app. Give me your thoughts in the comments below. This has opened up a lot of possibilities for my CAT 306 and now I can use a lot of my attachments that I had for my Gehl RT210. Thanks for suppo...
Can the CAT306 CR With Stick Steer and XTC Replace Multiple Machines? - Initial Review
Переглядів 16 тис.2 роки тому
THIS IS NOT SPONSORED! I wanted to consolidate some of my equipment because I felt a little overwhelmed with all the machine maintenance I have. So I decided to look for an all in one machine that could do what my skid steer and wheeled excavator could do. I looked at a lot of options, including the Mecalac but decided to go with the CAT 306 with Stick Steer and XTC for many reasons: -It was ha...
Gehl Track Loader RT210 Long Term Review - In depth look at Gehl's track system with pros and cons
Переглядів 11 тис.2 роки тому
It is time to say goodbye to my much loved Gehl RT210 after having it for nearly 10 years. I decided to consolidate a lot of my equipment since we will be moving and I will no longer need to split time between properties. In this video I go through a lot of the good and bad of the Gehl. Mainly, it isn't great for doing lots of roadwork, namely ditching and shoulder work. I replaced the RT210, m...
How to Put A Track Back on a CTL Skidsteer in the Field - GEHL RT210
Переглядів 13 тис.3 роки тому
I slipped a track for the first time in nearly 10 years of ownership of my Gehl RT210. It happened when working on the shoulder of my driveway. I have discovered that the Gehl undercarriage doesn't like breaker rocks used for the sub grade on roads. I plan to make another video on that soon, but in this one I show how I was able to get the track back on even while the machine was perched precar...
DIY Building a Long Driveway Up a Hill - With a Switchback - 3500ft Long
Переглядів 37 тис.3 роки тому
I finally received my erosion permit and finished my driveway to the new homesite. After making over 4000ft of driveway, I learned how to drive a dozer, a CAT D6, and got a lot of use out of my CAT 323. I have come to appreciate how hard being a dozer operator actually is (especially if you don't have Slope and Grade assist tools) and can't believe how much effort goes into to putting up silt f...
How to Run a Dozer With No Experience - CAT D6 Grade Control and Slope Assist Tutorial

Without them I d...
How to Remove Trees with Excavator and Bucket - Pull Method

I needed to clear a lot of trees for a new home we are building. I was primarily pushing the trees over with my CAT 323. My experienced excavator operator friend showed me a new way of taking trees out by pulling them with the excavator instead of pushing them. It works brilliantly and is much safer. By lini...

As q old timer with a lifetime operating the biggest advantage is to not just no how to react but to anticipate what is needed millisecond before so you can increase speed or slick land with nothing in the blade high speed no gouge kinda showing off! I only ran this system once cutting to storm drains compound grading so i was not able to enjoy the technology and it would fault on me stop working your explanation was very good i would like to play with a better one of these systems.

I like to dig the roots around like he does for these small trees as well, I also push or pull accordingly per tree. Some of the trees I have cleared were 4 - 7 foot diameter trunks… these I will use new teeth and literally cut them in sections from wherever the break off up above. I have a cage but my window opens so I can hear where the tree cracks. Once I hear the crack I work on the stout buggar above that area and rip down limbs to get to the trunk and keep going. Pulling a large tree isn’t the best idea unless you have carved it down to a 20 foot trunk. 20 foot tall and 5 or so feet wide will split if you use your bucket like a splitting wedge and push it in a foot or so… now back up and wiggle the bucket a little, she will split of a slice all the way to the root. Take all the small bites ya want and dig out the root system at the end

I thought the rear discharge was made to be hooked up to a collection system? Not sure why you’d get rear discharge otherwise, unless you are windrowing to bale it, hahahaha.

    • @driftlessinwi
      @driftlessinwi 2 місяці тому

The only collection systems I have seen are hooked to a side discharge. I have heard the rear discharge decks are preferred for commercial setups because of liability from damage to people and property from flying debris. The other benefit is that you can mow in any direction without worrying about where to blow clippings.

For operating a bulldozer you :1: Cut from the Top down and Fill from the Bottom up! If you want to argue with me about that then :2: ask Gravity. After 3 seconds of cutting were is the extra material (dirt, rocks vegetation or what used to be in your septic tank. Were do I push this Dirt / whatever is in front of the blade? Just to the side. O good that dirt clod or rock just roll down into my bedroom. Oh shit! But it gets worse. :3: and probably more important is were does the Water Go!!!! IF YOU DO NOT GIVE THE WATER A PLACE TO GO IT WILL GO WHERE YOU DO NOT WHAT IT TO!!! The more you pay attention to what you are doing and think about it; then you will have a goodder experience. The most important thing is to learn from your experiences and don’t blindly follow the other Lemmings! You pass as an apprentice.

They designed the operator seat at an angle so you dont have to twist your back and neck as far to look out the back window while you're reversing. It reduces back and neck strain which reduces operator fatigue, and it's in all the new medium and large dozers.

you have a lot of uninformed information in this video (biggest one being engine air filter is on top of engine, not behind side panels). for starters, you are not sitting on top of the engine. that hatch under your feet lifts open to the hydrostatic pump/drive. and as far as cleanup, spraying dry grass debris should never be your first attempt. get yourself a battery power blower to clean it out quickly after each mow; don't let it build up after several uses. also, keep in mind, this is a finish mower. not a rough terrain mower where you're cutting foot tall grass. that is where you're large tractor/mower implements should be used. proper application for intended use of the machine would help you tremendously.

    • @driftlessinwi
      @driftlessinwi 6 місяців тому

The air filter is under seat, where all the grass clippings pile up, the side panel does have a screen that still needs to be cleaned. The seat is above engine. The blower doesn't work, I've tried it for years. The machine gets just as dirty cutting the yard as cutting trails. I've used it for over about 12 years now so I would say I'm pretty informed...here is a real tip, get a side discharge and problems go away, I just got one, hurray!

If you are not operating at full speed then of course your not throwing the snow far. Also, if there are any gaps between the impellor and the housing, you should try adding rubber. This can make a substantial difference. There are many videos showing how. With a few mods, this should be an excellent show blowing machine.
