Last week I was honored to have Coach JJ of @maximum_efforts / HONU bring two of his people, Nancy and Tristan, from San Diego, CA out here to Massachusetts to train with me. I brought them through some very textbook shuaijiao movement, concepts, gripping and throwing. For 3 days we dove deep into fundamentals leading up to gripping and moving games and then sparring. Then we had an awesome day Mongolian wrestling out in the snow.
On the fifth day, I got to experience sumo for the first time! 😃
Not only did I have the honor to teach, I was able to learn from Tristan, Nancy and of course JJ's deep experience in Judo, BJJ and Sumo. Thanks for entrusting half of your week to me. I hope y'all have fallen in love with this awesome wrestling art, and even if short of love, can deeply appreciate it's strengths. It has been great to meet like-minded martial artists who have their own competitive focus but the ability, the wisdom and humility to step outside of their comfort zones and immerse in other kinds of grappling.
I had met Nancy and Coach JJ in San Diego last year while Lavell Marshall and I toured 4 locations in the USA, showcasing Shuai Jiao the Mongol Way to America. I was struck by their friendliness, skills and ability to appreciate and learn from other arts, a mentality and spirit I admire and vibe with. If you're on the West Coast, hit em up.
On my end... I might have to start doing sumo too.
