Strava: Year in Review - Helpful or Harmful?
Why do we only celebrate kilometres/miles ran? There are so many more useful metrics to use and for those who have had a tough year - seeing their training 'decline' can be really harmful.

Running Gait Analysis with Blake Withers
I randomly stumbled on your video, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I haven't ran in a while but recently started up again for a marathon early next year. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said! Awesome job!
this was immensely helpful and resonated a lot with my experience trying to establish a regular jogging routine! I found it really disheartening to see heart rates over 150 even when I felt that I was already really slow... but I've been focusing on a higher cadence now while keeping it really really slow. I feel surprisingly good now, am able to stay comfortably below 150 and hope to improve slowly over time :)
Thank you so much for this...
Totally agree. I took up running at 59 and found it really difficult to work out my zones as based on my age I would never have got faster than walking without going into zone 3 or 4. I was fairly fit with a resting HR of 50 from cycling. I’ve just started training for the London marathon and would be walking if I stuck to heart rate zones so just go by feel! I walk my dogs and my heart rate stays below 100 so not out of zone 1 but shoots up when I start running!! Totally confused as does walking count as aerobic training? You’re totally right. 😊
Here my first backyard 24 january. Good to see some good backyard content.
Oh that’s great! You’ll love it! Thanks for the comment 😊
Agree! For beginners, it should be about logging kms and enjoying the runs. Sophie, curious, whats your heart rate while running and filming?
Thanks for your comment Kenny, and great question! It varies but typically a little higher than when I’m not talking to the camera 😂 This run was 146 average. Usually my “easy” runs (if it’s cool temp, flat and actually easy) are around 130-135bpm
This is soooo refreshing to hear! I've personally been confused by the whole zone 2 thing. Everyone agrees that we should do more zone 2, but not everyone agrees on what zone 2 even means haha. Is it LT1? LT2? Is it a 3 zones system? 5 zones? is it Mafatone? is it conversational? Do we adjust for heat? What happens with cardiac drift? There are so many questions! I personally have to "run" incredibly slow to stay below 150bpm and I flat out can't do it in summer, and I've been running for 10 years. I also am able to hold a conversation at the top end of 170bpm, so the conversation test doesn't work. What worked for me was to learn what "easy" feels like based on how well my body recovered after an easy run. So I would look at overnight HRV, resting HR and general feel the day after the run. This to me is the best indicator to know if I've gone easy or not. But it takes a while to develop that feeling.
Thank you for such a thoughtful comment! It is soooo confusing!!! So interesting regarding the conversation test! It definitely seems too oversimplified to work for everyone. Great tips, thank you so much 🙏
As a beginner/non runner this was really interesting info and easy to understand with some good suggestions for getting started and making progress x
Thanks! Hopefully you can implement these ideas in your training soon 😊
I have my first Backyard in April. I am excited to join you on your journey for your next one!
Awesome! Are you doing the one in St Ives? I might see you there!! Good luck with your training 🙌
@ No I’m doing Eternal Damnation in the States.
Just how many calories do you get per day?
Thanks for your comment! I have no idea, I've never tracked calories. The only thing I try and be specific about is fuelling enough during a run through carbohydrate powders, gels etc. Then getting enough protein and carbs after the run :)
Well, good luck to you one thing I would tell you that you can go with a shoe that has a wider toolbox either an ultra those are zero drop or topo which is a white toolbox with like 5 mm of draw because if you go with the shoot that’s too big for you. That’s really bad for your feet and you might have a really worse day. You can get blisters and everything. Just a little suggestion now bye I would say and I don’t, but you know Might be your way to go sometimes they’re a little heavier, but you know you’re gonna have to just look and shop around but you get other things just get a wide model even Hoka now mix wide model and I just look for something wider but not bigger because it’s too big. You’re gonna get blisters and you could have a really bad day. good luck to you. Enjoy the video. I always wondered how people train for that backyard ultra.
Thanks so much for the advice! I think you're right, wider is the way to go :)
That "morning" energy 😂😂 Great tips 😂
See you there next week
@strongerstride I'm in 😍
Awaba st is goated (and eZ), but to be fair I'm that weird random dude that likes hills
Easy 😭😭😭😭
Great review! Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the support!!
Looking forward to the updates on how the training goes!
Stay tuned 👀
Let me know when you’re back in the area. We can go for a couple RTB runs.
First weekend of Jan RTB?
@ i think so. Hope its the sunday 🤞
i think so. Hope its the sunday 🤞
I recognize that route 😊
One of my faves!
the 4 x 10k day sounds like a great idea!
Will let you know how it goes!
You said the nova hasn’t changed much but I think it has because it’s got a different foam that’s more cushioned and bouncy. The upper is also a different material that’s much more breathable. Finally the 5 doesn’t have that big rear end like the 4 so it’s a lil better for heal strikers.
Great points! Thank you 🙏
All the best! really impressed..thanks for sharing your knowedge. Thanks Sota for helping community.
Thank you for watching!! 😁
fuck i miss Australia, i miss the trees,. Where is that?
This is Centennial Park in Sydney!
Thanks and keep up the great work.
Thanks so much, I appreciate the support!
Have you ever tried running in barefoot shoes and if so what were your thoughts?
Great question! I’ve had a pair of vivobarefoot shoes for about 4 years and love them for the gym/walking. I’ve always been a bit apprehensive to run in them due to some previous Achilles issues. I’ve done a couple of random short runs <5km but not for a while. What about you?
@ that’s all I run in now I’m a big xero shoe lover
Great point about how your previous shoe history can affect your perception on your new shoes, great vid
I feel like it really changes our opinions so definitely worth the mention!!
I am all for Sophie Lane shoe reviews 🔥
Wow that place looks amazing!
Thanks! Springbrook is a gem!
Yep just more mileage on the terrain you’ll be running in race
Awesome video!
Thank you ☺️
Wow! Amazing content 🙌 More people on UA-cam need to see this!
Thanks legend 🙏
the mountain shot was stunning!! im so glad i found this vid and your channel!
Thanks so much! It’s a beautiful part of the world!!!
tbh I think the steepness did show on video for once!
Finally!!!!
I love how it's so philisophical - "It's easy until it's not." Everything in life has a threshold were it goes from doable to a struggle. With a Backyard Ultra, you get to find that point and then be really close to the finish line so you see where you crack and not have a 20 mile death march to your car. Much more useful format to find yourself. And 100 miles in 24 hours is no joke for an average person. Perfect pace/time decision by Laz when he came up with this. And if you can only do 30 miles, then that's you right now and you found yourself. I Love it.
Trail looks amazing minus the uphills
😂😂
Great recap Sophie. I heard the podcast recap - well done on the 100km! I can't believe you did that after having a blister in the first 2 hours. Looking forward to hearing your plans and training for the April 2025 St Ives event because I'm locked in for the March 2025 I'm Still Standing event at Heffron Park Maroubra. Favourite running route is Coogee beach to Maroubra Beach
Thanks so much!! That’s so exciting! You’ll love it 😍😍
Nicely done! Looks like it was a fun day!
Thanks John! It was great!
You're becoming a quick editor 🤝 welcome to the club
Thank you sir 🙏
Really enjoyed the video Sophie! We met at the Crows Nest run club 2 weeks ago so I was happy to stumble across this channel. One thing I'd ask for is a map of this lovely run you did! Perhaps you could link your strava activity in the description?
Hey Harry! Thanks so much for the comment ☺️ Oh yeah!! It’s in Lane Cove National Park, following the river from Delhi Rd to De Burghs Bridge. I’ll try and add it to the description 🙏
Done 😊
Love this! Makes me want to get into trail runs!!
Thanks Kev!! Let’s do it!!! I’ll show you the ropes ☺️
Great video!!😁 Keep them coming 🤞🏾😁
Thanks so much!! That means a lot! 🙏
Fantastic video!
Thanks so much!!
When people get stress fractures if have noticed that Training has gone really well for them the past year. No minor injuries that allowed to press the pause button for 2 or 3 weeks. Main issue is excessive build ups like doubling volume in less then a year. Diet can be an issue as well as the vitamin d levels
Strong Performance and feeling fast is often pushing people into injuries. As the body struggles less with the aerobic side of running. Still it has to catch up tendons muscle and bones take much longer to adapt.
Damn I miss the Aussie trails. Great video as always Sophie! So much good content being pumped out recently
Wow you're quick! The Aussie trails (and me) miss you!!!! See you soon 🙏
Really great video. Lot of food for thought.
thank you!
Great vid, looks like I had a lil preview to this vid the other day 🤝
got my brain ticking 🫡
Prood of my runner friend 🎉 from Morocco,I think you go do more in next year 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! Fingers crossed!!
@@strongerstride welcome 💐🏃💐
Love it!!! Very proud
Couldn't have done it without you!!
I enjoyed your video Sophie. I was able to figure out from one of your shots that your pace in the ultra was just over 7 minutes per kilometre. Without that shot I would not have known how long a yard is. How long did you have to complete each yard? Thanks Phil
Thank you, Phil! Oh yeah I didn't explain the concept, oops! You have to do 6.7km every hour on the hour. So the event started at 8am - you complete 6.7km and have to be back at the start line for the next 6.7km at 9am, and so on. If it takes 50mins to complete 6.7km, you have 10mins to rest, eat and get ready for the next one :)
Hi Sophie 💙
Hey Kenny 😊
Im amaze what you guys did.. thats also my dream to run that kind of far. 100km.
Oh yay, you can do anything you set your mind to!
