Let us know when you've come to what seems to be the end of the DLC, IRL. I believe you've mentioned recording some of these ahead of posting and I want to ensure I give no spoilers.
Based on what I saw in your rumor mode ship log, I’m PRETTY sure you’re good to go! The Sealed Vault awaits.
Well, the Eye's signal travels at the speed of light. I guess it should be possible to hear it long after it has ceased to be emitted and then teleport to within the "dead zone" as it were.
Ah yes of course! The signal was sent long ago and the deerbirds were just close enough to hear it ages before the Nomai. Hmmm now I wonder why no other Nomai ever heard it. I guess the universe is a big place.
@KingAdamXVII I replied to that reply a few minutes ago. I'm replying again to tell you to ignore it. It's deleted now, and you should delete the notification and never think about it again. This comment is fine. But don't think about my initial response to your response. Expunge it from your memory. I posted a spoiler. Nothing major, but it would undermine the experience of figuring things out for yourself. A lapse in judgment on my part. Sincerest apologies.
Revisiting everything is a great way to catch things you might have overlooked or misunderstood or missed completely. For me, a second playthrough was actually grasping all the Nomai names lol.
Yes! I feel like I got most of the Nomai now. It’s really fun being able to make some of the more obscure connections like Melorae being Cycad’s grandmentor.
I think you should be good.
The Eye of the Universe isn't EXACTLY a conventional Great Filter, at least by my layman's understanding, since that concept usually has more to do with something that wipes out ecosystems/civilisations before they get a chance to become interstellar travellers (or at least interstellar radio transmitters/receivers as we are today). The Eye, theoretically, wipes out everyone at once, which, technically yes, but that's not really how that concept is generally applied. (also, whether the Eye resets the universe as soon as its observed is ambiguous (probably the simplest explanation and certainly the deerbirds seem to think so). But I choose to believe that it just distorts time so the observer is effectively 'transported' to the 'end of time' once the whole universe has... ran out, as it were.). Since the fear factor has seemingly mostly died down for you, I don't feel bad in telling you; the deerbirds are clearly capable of moving quite fast. So why do they approach you slowly? Probably because they're AFRAID of the FROG GOBLIN ALIEN invading their little slice of cyberspace which has been unchanging for thousands of years, in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT and then TURNING OUT THE LIGHTS. (also, honorable mention to the fact that, once the dam collapses, they can hear their brethren in the lowlands dying en masse, and given how detached they are from what's going on in the real world, it's somewhat reasonable for them to assume that you, the only new element in the equation, are the cause of that). What most players don't realise at first is that, as big and fast and scary as they are, the deerbirds are experiencing a horror story of their own :P btw 'just turn the gamma up' isn't a valid solution, and that's not me saying 'you are a lame fake gamer if you do that', it's me saying 'it's LITERALLY pitch black with not even imperceptibly dim lighting, so it wouldn't help at all (I'm 99% sure)' OOO, I love that glowing-eyes analysis! Most people never really consider that the slide reels are literally an artistic representation of history, and the deerbirds must've had an artist or artists who made them! Their eyes glowing in the dark are reminiscent of some real animals (including deer, and many others) who have a reflective surface at the back of their eyes called a 'tapetum lucidum' which helps them collect more light to see in the dark, which also makes their eyes shine brightly when you shine a bright light at them! But yeah, artistic metaphor about dark emotions, and/or the figurative 'darkness' of their situation, is a great explanation, and I've never heard that idea before! 20:44 Yes, it was always purple! Oh- wait, oh, yeah, I've seen some variance in whether people see the glowing Nomai energy (primarily the 'tractor beam' rings) as either purple or blue depending on their screen/graphics settings, probably much the same for you. 25:00 They make it loud on purpose, as a relief from the oppressive silence of the previous sequence. :P 27:58 Hmm, you're right! It's the same primary note(?), but more... crackly? Idk, you're the music guy :P Probably a metaphor for how they are both discoveries of a sort, but one is your character eagerly finding the archive, while the other is the deerbirds' less-than-ecstatic response to their discovery about the Eye? P.S. Very good work with your thumbnails/titles, all of them are very good at hinting at what's going to happen in the video to people who know the game, while giving away *approximately* nothing to people who don't. ...Dang, this comment got long.
20 minutes of pure elk wrangling, heck yeah! And we finnaly reach the second Forbidden archive. The one where we see their greatest fears come true. Fear turned anger. An anger that blinded them by a shadow of their own making. And now this shadow blinds everyone else. You have almost disspelled it. *Your* fear that is. As a reward a few miscellanious facts in the replies. But don't think that this is over. You still need to open that Vault, and find out what kind of a thing they loath so much. On my first playthrough my working theory was that it is some supernatural power they couldn't control. The source of all ghost matter, perhaps?
Here is a real life biology fact. The glowing eyes are a real phenomena that happens with most nocturnal animals. They have a layer of reflective cells at the back side of their eyes, that reflects light back at photoreceptive cells, after it passes for the first time. This lets them see better in dimly lit areas. As a side effect a portion of the reflected light escapes the eyes, so they appear to glow. So the eyes aren't glowing, the reflect the incoming light. You can check it on some of your local animals by shining a flashlight at them, while they look at you. Some of these animals are cats, dogs, deer, elks and owls!
Here are some facts regarding the elks AI. Since you've passed the hardest stealth section, I feel you deserve to know. 1. They are chumps. ... 2. They are probably more afraid of you, than you are of them. I mean, every time they see you, they see a weird frogman midget with four eyes for the first time. 3. Their vision is much more limited than you think. It's about as far as a focused artifact. About 90% of times when you thought they are going to see you, they couldn't. Especially at the music house. 4. Their routine consists of slowly navigating to the last place they've seen you at. If you aren't there, they look around. If you are close they lunge at you. 5. Technically you don't need to conceal your light, ever. Just bait them to your location and walk around. Challange: get to all forbidden archives without concealing the artifact. 6. Reduced frights option is actually a difficulty setting. It removes the lunging behaviour and scary noises when an elk is nearby.
Now here is the list of the intended and the funny ways of how to reach each forbidden archive. First archive. Intended strategy: Wait for the dam to break and extinguish all the elks there. Funny strategy: Accedentally fall off a raft in one of the loading zones. Second archive: Intended strategy: Get past the stealth section. -Un- Funny strategy: Get to the dream tower from a different location and wait for it to collapse. Beeline to the archive and pray you get a reel that tells you how to get a shortcut there. Third archive: Intended strategy: Get past the stealth section. Funny strategy: -Use artifact projection radius to find a goaround for the stealth section- Blow out the lights. Go to a different dream location. Raft back to the canyon. Use the elevator to get to the opposite side of the mansion.
So cool! Love your artistic analysis. I am reminded of Yoda: fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering!
If you look at the Solar System in the slides, you can see the planet that the Bramble destroyed, still intact. And it has Brambke vines coming out of it. Dark Bramble predates the Deerbirds, even if it hadn't destroyed its host planet until long after their retreat into seclusion.
Ahhh yes I can see those are dark bramble vines. Probably. 😉
The fact that the owls are actually going down the elevators physically (and you can see it) is a great attention to detail, another developer would've just have them spawn in at the bottom
You are one step closer to DLC ending! ))) Plz, pay attention to the Vision: the Eye starts to become red (and destroy everything) after Owlk touched the Eye - a contentious observer must enter the Eye to collapse all possibilities! If you jump with the Vessel to the Eye, you could try to find Eye signal blocker satellite.
Props for doing it the proper way! I got tired of failing the stealth mode, went in from the cliffs entrance and waited for the deer birds to get yeeted, sprinted down to the basement, viewed one reel before I got looped, and repeated x3. Not the most elegant way of doing it but more reliably executed for me! Definitely the most frustrating part of the DLC but satisfying to beat nonetheless!
Ahahaha awesome! I considered that but didn’t think there’d be nearly enough time to see a slide reel.
@KingAdamXVII yeah it really doesn't give you long and you have to sprint like hell even at that. But the fact that the tower falling is 1) as late as it is but 2) not the very end of the loop, makes me think it was put there as a kind of last resort, like "surely there shouldn't be enough time to do this... but is there???"
If you go back to the Eye with the DLC installed and you look out the windows from the vessel you can see the signal blocker if you look for it.
I think I was watching a speed run of the dlc or something where the developers were reacting to it and they mentioned something about some segments extending the loop to give players a bit more time due to how the dlc is designed so they didnt get to an exciting moment just to be let down by the loop ending. not sure what those moments are though perhaps the stealthy bits before vault elevators?
Wow you did it! ::) If you push your Scout into the dam you see 100% integrity till solar sails open. Then integrity quickly goes down We think that everyone of Owlks were the same, but maybe existed several "political" fraction with opposite views of their future. Even more, we see that Owlks had 3 sub-cultures - lowlanders, who were engineers (they had access to all controls) and their DreamWorld is a chilling place, islanders, who were most religions persons (most nteresting tall Temple, Eye church, Hall of fame) and "gorgens", who loved secret societies and to hide everything
Wow, I never knew the grates in the dam were traversible! Yeah, the deerbirds recorded their true history, then left behind a tailored, altered history... for who? They left hidden, trapped slides in secret locations, showing the paths to their hidden archives... for who?! Like, OK, the hidden side burning rooms were traps, they were designed to shut you in once you took the slide reel, but why bait a trap with a real slide reel when you could bait it with a fake? You can definitely force a justification for some of these things, not least of which being that they are aliens whose minds may follow alien logic. But on the meta level, the devs clearly constructed the DLC to be a bit more on-the-nose than the base game. Ironically, the lack of written text (which is frankly a pretty genius decision) forces the exposition to be more blatant. Because, with the Nomai, you're combing through their notes and conversations (although they have left an awful lot of them for posterity, but that's just their culture it seems), whereas with the deerbirds, this is their deliberate, recorded history, and at that point the missing information is deliberate, and at that point you have to ask why. ...I got a bit rambly. TL;DR: Yeah, good insight!
Captain america if he was poor
Nah im def Feldspar, first thing i did was full sending into planets. Saw the interloper, went head on and came out victorious 😤(ship was reduced to atoms).
I want to watch more Feldspar playthroughs. 👍
And once again you've made a comment in the video that makes me excited to see you figure something out later on lol. Always gotta let you cook, cause you never disappoint.
yea the reels having redacted info would only really serve to hide the history they were embarrassed of but for who? their younger generation that grew up here? or in case someone like us at some point stumbled upon the stranger? but then if they considered that possibility why are they so against our presence in the simulation? but speaking about a tailored experience... watching Maisy play this DLC.... no script is going to guide her play through lol never seen anyones 1st slide reel be one of the hidden slide reel
What about hiding it from themselves? Perhaps they simply wished to take the blue pill.
Agreed on your outro take. The game design feels a lot more obvious and in your face in the DLC, which is a double edged sword. On the positive side, i think the puzzles are more logical, and maybe more satisfying to solve, whereas the main game puzzles are more lateral thinking. But on the negative side i do think that that more direct, in your face game design is slightly less immersive. The hints and clues in the main game just seem more naturally baked into the story and worldbuilding.
On the other hand, a lot of the biggest clues were only possible to access because the buildings were falling apart from age.
i would say without text to read they did a good job making everything more obvious visually. then the ship log is there if you cant figure it out.... and yet now watching 3 different people doing the DLC at the same time and how others are struggling in different ways to figure things out. so its more obvious to some than others i guess lol.
I won't say I'm sure you've found everything in the stranger but I think you might have. One odd detail is that the red panels in the lock between the cliffs and the reservoir are heaters. Very hot ones too they burn you if you touch them.
You cant say, 'Nothing more interesting, just skip to the next episode' but then promise a song to close??? Thats the good stuff! Thanks for playing. 🦌 (pun intended)
Screw Zodiac signs, which Outer Wilds traveler are you
I’m definitely Chert. I sit around doing nothing, only to panic as I realize everything’s falling apart around me, to come to the calm realization just before catastrophe that there was never anything I could have done about it in the first place.
In a recent session of screwing around in the Solar System I played with aerobraking. I would approach a planet at ludicrous speed and pass even more ludicrously close to the ground, but still high enough to only hit the atmosphere and kill all of my speed. I'm definitely a Feldspar.
I started out a Chert/Feldspar and ended up...a Riebeck?! Idk, man, those deerbirds and anglerfish STILL jumpscare me pretty bad.
13:00 That was hilarious and amazing! And then the chapter titles were the icing on the cake!
"we all turn into feldspars by the end" this is so true though, like psychologically in universe as well, the notion of exploring this mystery with so much danger while simultaneously having no stakes of dying, you go from "uh oh don't know if i can survive that medium jump, I'd better not" to "hey cool what's through this black hole?"
French horn flex!

This location was absolutely the one I had the most trouble with on my playthrough, even with reduced frights on (which I believe lowers the sneaking difficulty a bit, but don't quote me on that). Also I wanted to let you know that your musical interludes are my favorite parts of your playthrough. They really do enhance the emotional impact of the DLC and make your playthrough unique in the best way.
Thanks so much for the encouragement 😊
Yes, reduced frights makes things easier. It removes the Owlks' lunge ability, which effectively reduces the range at which they catch you.
i dunno if the children would have grown up in the dream world. the slide reels make it seem like a pretty fast trip to this solar system but they were using the solar sails not some kinda of FTL and with limited resources they probably ruled out reproduction so all the family photos are old and the children grew up in transit. the way they are strapped into the beds wouldnt fit with them growing older in that bed until they eventually died. though considering they could exit at will its possible they did have children when they got here and they did grow up using the simulation before their eventual demise. but yea theres a perfect number of beds in each room so there does seem to clearly be a decision of no reproduction
Great analysis! Interesting they were willing to sacrifice so much for the unknown. I still don’t really know why they thought the eye was worth it. I suppose they were expecting a religious epiphany, and their story is a bit of a statement on the destructive power of religion.
It looks like Adam forgot that he has already found 3 reels how to round a path to 3 forbidden archives.
No, he knows everything in the path reels. He's used it. He's just getting stuck on how to get past the deer birds on this way to the well with the alarm ward over it.
Yeah I’ve turned out the lights many times and crept around in the dark trying to get past the siren and the deerbird down there. Wanted to try something different rather than feeling like I was beating my head against the wall. There were clever tricks to the other two locations so my assumption is/was that there is a clever trick here as well.
@@ElliotPooley For me, this looks like a spoiler, maybe even heavy spoiler
@@viteav208 deleted to be safe!
Never in my life was I on the edge of my seat watching a man try to find a solution to a puzzle. And I'm trying so hard not to give a hint to the solution. On one hand I really want to see what ideas you try to get down there, on the other? I don't really know, a desire to nudge you in the right direction? Anyway I am excited for the next episode, and if you are interested in a general "what the devs want from you in this section" kind of hint, I could give it to you. But I feel like you are close to a solution on your own.
Yeah, that said this is by far the hardest of the areas. I feel like it goes first area as the easiest then third (assuming you don't bypass it like Adam did) and finally this one.
@@SamuelSandeen Oh definitely. This is the same order I did them on my first playthrough.
Don’t worry, I’ll get it on my own! Thanks for the offer of help though, I feel very supported. 😊
@@KingAdamXVII Alrighty then. Keep trying and you'll make it through!
1:08 - you actually don't have to take this raft every time. You can just jump to the artifacts house.
Saving several seconds every loop <<<< blind adherence to routine 😂😭
@@KingAdamXVII 😂😂😂
We've reached the forbidden archive number three! Which is the second one in your playthrough. A bit out of order, I guess. But you've done this whole place out of order, so that checks out. They've cast thier shadow and chose to live inside it. A dream made up of old memories, that makes you forget about the new ones. Anyway, I now wonder how are you going to get through the dream tower guards, since there doesn't seem to be any "loopholes" to get past them safe. And do you plan to try and get to the cliffside archive "legitimately", just to see how it's done? Also would you like a small fact about deerbird's psychology and culture? If I remember correctly it was stated by the devs, but I can't bring myself to remember where exactly I've heard it. Even if it's not, I still feel like it fits them. Sort of an observation you can make about thier behaviour in general before and after the Eye. Edit: I have checked if what I am talking about is an officially stated fact. It is indeed.
I will be very interested in learning about their psychology and culture after I unlock Three Chainz, I think. I want to do that as blindly as possible.
Seeing you leapfrogging around Ash Twin while chasing the inverted sand-fall was genuinely funny. Even without the context that you're doing that while waiting for the universe to properly end in a sick flyby Edit: And you landed in Giant's Deep lol. Planned or not that was brilliant
Oh, I also tried to fly very close to supernova. And as far as I remember, I managed to fly closer than radius of the Sun.
Maybe it is better not to check at first something that could potentially finish the DLC, but explore what is still unexplored and unvisited?
I go where my interest takes me!
I think the reason that the panel that holds the code is always glitched in the dream world is because they used that slide reel transfer device that’s in the the stranger. They must have transferred already burned slides
4:25 No, I'm following along perfectly 😁 The amount of "maybe, maybe, maybe" happening in this episode is absolutely buck-wild. Letting you cook is a struggle sometimes, but holy MACKEREL your game-sense makes it all worth it lol
So... two small things. One: there's a shortcut you missed for getting back from the extinguisher. Two: there is something else you can do in the archive room but it's probably not something you would easily think of.
I continue to love watching your playthrough, especially your focus on the music! Also, reminder about my comment from a few videos ago that you should (and it’s totally fine if this is done “off camera”) be sure that you’ve filled out (at least the major beats of) the ***main game*** ship’s log on this save file - I would be more specific, but I don’t want to give away any more than I already have!
Thanks! Yes I’ve been keeping that in mind! I’ll finally reveal my ship’s log in episode 24 (already recorded the next three) and you can check that I’ve done everything.
@KingAdamXVII Woohoo! Trust me, when you get to the end of the DLC (assuming you haven’t already), you’ll be glad you did :)
@@WyattNelsonN0S13NM I’ve recorded a few episodes ahead and I think I might be able to unlock all three chains in my next loop. Is that the point I need to make sure all my ducks are covered in the base game?
@KingAdam XVII Because you’ve asked me directly, I’ll answer directly - yes, it is!
@KingAdamXVII @WyattNelsonN0S13NM No-no, I've wrote all needed to visit location from main game for full experience in the DLC and Adam have already visited all these locations. Nothing to worry
25:10 It's probably for the best that the 'deerbirds' (that's your name for them, so I'm using it here, it's as good as any) *didn't* 'fit in right at home' on Timber Hearth... the Nomai were very careful to protect the ecosystem of the planets they worked on, but given their track record, I wouldn't trust the deerbirds to do the same, and then the Hearthians might never have evolved at all! You got to this hidden archive easily with your knowledge of the invisible bridges; only to learn the technique that lets you find the invisible bridges! Sort of a backwards chain of progression there, since this is WHERE most people learn the trick of dropping their artifact. And the reveal of the first slide reel you watched was meant to be that the simulation IS a simulation (which, I feel like a lot of people have more or less assumed by the time they get to this point, but for some it's a big reveal.) So basically, you got somewhere to learn things that you'd already figured out. Still, it was a good episode, and even if it was just confirming a negative, that's still progress! Minor spoiler below in rot13 (just to make sure you can't accidentally read it; you can plug it into rot13.com to decrypt); telling you about a minor thing that ISN'T in the game so you don't get too caught up worrying about it. Thanks! Love that rot13 trick. I’ll hold off on reading it until I’m feeling ready to end the playthrough. I am realizing that dropping the artifact made this bit sooo much easier! I would have been sneaking around in the dark maze of that building!! I can’t even find my way through it with the lights on and with no deerbirds hunting me! I do kind of wish I didn’t know the final bridge existed, I imagine that can be a really cool part where the player is being chased and has no choice but to step off the cliff there hoping for an invisible bridge to run across.
@@KingAdamXVII That is, in fact, exactly what happened to me during my first playthrough! I knew that the archive was through where the painting used to be, but not that there was another invisible bridge. When I came down the stairs with my lantern foolishly unconcealed, the doorguard deerbird (the one you taunted at the end of this video 😂) came at me, and I just booked it towards the painting as fast as I could. By the time I processed that I was about to sprint onto open air, it was too late to stop… and the next thing I knew, I was sprinting across an invisible bridge I hadn’t actually known for sure would be there! BIG “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” Leap of Faith moment, just with less deliberation and more panic 🤣
@@WyattNelsonN0S13NM that sounds awesome. Definitely excited to become an avid watcher of other people’s playthroughs!
Less than 5 minutes and you have me already scratching my head. Mixed mining is a pain in the ass, and if you leave anywhere that later can jam it will and your base will falter until you fix it again and again, best of luck and happy playing. I would just leave a gap of pain on the map until much later then try and clean it up later, but I also hate bugs and wish you the best on your death world run :)
Lmao nah mixed mining is a trivial problem and I 100% guarantee what I just slapped down in five minutes will never back up.
SHIP HULL BREACH DETECTED
I think most people miss dropping the artifact early as the prompt isn't as early as looking down to drop a scroll in a Nomai ruin for instance. As far as I remember I didn't discover this one by accident, only after being taught it. I imagine to a point, a lot of people don't want to lose their only light source once they're in the dream world, from a practical perspective, you can't interact with candles, elevators or 'zoomy hands' without. I've seen a few people discover it after trying to outsmart the dearbirds "if I have no lantern you can't blow it out", and attempting to swim. I think Joseph Anderson discovered it that way in his playthrough, running and jumping into the river, he left the radius just as he dream-drowned. And now I realise I have caught up with your playthrough... I binge watched your OuterWilds playthrough last weekend, and was really excited to see you were doing Echoes too. Looking forward to the next!
Writing lyrics to that song is one thing... timing each phrase and connecting that to the damn break is another. But to do that and cut it so fine - absolutely incredible - I think this is a cooler challenge than landing on the sun station manually, I'm going to have to try it out!
It’s actually pretty easy! The dam breaks at 13:00 minutes. Also, the music loops every 15 seconds (or 30 seconds if you account for the harmony) and it ends right around 13:00 so the musical phrases start every :00, :15, :30, and :45. Happy intruding!
@@KingAdamXVII The damn broke at 13:00 and you blew our minds 10 seconds later!
Beautiful!
7:10 Poor editing-Adam! This game gave me so many middle of the night revelations. Playing the base game during lockdown had the benefit that I had nothing stopping me firing up the PS4 at 3AM 😆
11:00 Fun fact: There actually used to be a normal bridge there! The devs must have changed it to teach people about the grabby hands or something.
