Curbing culvert erosion on our farm.
**Erosion** is the process by which soil and rock are removed from the Earth's surface by wind or water flow, and then transported and deposited in other locations[1][2]. Clay soil is particularly susceptible to erosion due to its fine particles, which can be easily washed away by rainwater. This occurs when the soil lacks vegetation cover, leading to increased runoff and soil displacement[3][4].
To prevent clay soil erosion, several modern practices can be employed:
- **Vegetation**: Planting ground cover, shrubs, and trees helps stabilize the soil with their root systems[1][2].
- **Mulching**: Applying mulch reduces the impact of raindrops on the soil and helps retain moisture[1].
- **Terracing**: Building terraces on slopes can slow down water runoff and prevent soil loss[2][4].
- **Erosion Control Materials**: Using materials like geotextiles or erosion control blankets can protect the soil surface[5].
New developments in erosion prevention include advanced drainage systems, reduced tillage practices, and innovative materials like coir geotextiles to stabilize soil effectively[4][5].

If you have enough stone laying around, I would kindly suggest you to look into dry-stone walling. Here in Mallorca it is very common for creeks and seasonal rivers to have dry stone walls on each side to avoid erosion and a rather firm but loosely laid mix of large and small rocks on the riverbed to slow down the water. You can also create Gabion style walls with dry stone structure instead of the iron gabions. It is more work at first sight, but lasts centuries if done right.

This road and this culvert act as a dam, so they limit the most violent rainfall events by reducing (slowing) the flow of these events and capturing some of the sediment. This reservoir on the other side of the road acts as a sediment trap. If instead of this narrow culvert you had a wide box culvert during heavy rainfall you would have, certainly less pressure at the outlet of the culvert but much more flow and sediment carried by the floods, the peakof the flood would not be smoothed. Would the situation be better in your opinion? I am not sure.

Good essay Martin. An observation; on contour swale and berm construction is an active form of 'terracing' that can be accomplished by relocating a much smaller amount of earth. All the benefits of terracing and far less disruption to the terrain. 👍 I would like to suggest that the opening to your emergency spillway must be at least on half block taller than the 3 other slice gates. I imagine all 3 sluice gates will be the same elevation. Here is my thinking; the pool must rise to the level of the sluice gates for water to enter the canals. All 3 should be fed when the pool rises to that level. The emergency spillway must be higher so that the pool can rise above the sluice gates. But if the pool level rises too high, it will flow out the emergency spillway. I hope that makes sense. I did check out the current GOOGLE earth map for your farm. Your southerly neighbor has built a huge and very deep pond higher up the mountain. I'm wondering how that will affect the amount of water that comes to you.

That's a shame. Especially for framing that is going to be fully visible. No excuse. If you find the "tilt" to be visually disturbing, you can partially conceal it by adding a fascia board. Just make certain your roof tiles hang over the edge of the fascia considerably. You don't want water migrating behind the fascia board.

Interesting discovery. I hope you can find a way to wrap your membrane up onto the fascia board so wind driven rain does not find the joint between the fascia and the roof sheathing. I also noticed that all of the short piece of sheathing board line up on one rafter. Not cool with a heavy roof load like clay tiles. The joints should be staggered across the entire roof. Lining up the joints on one rafter puts extra load on that rafter and it sags. I suspect you can see that with the naked eye. Best of luck with your repair!

@@SuerteDelMolinoFarm I live in Ireland and earn money because I am from Ukraine. I have a plot of land in the southern part of Catalonia. I bought 5 hectares of land last year for 12,000 euros and 4,000 euros went to duties and taxes. I initially considered buying a plot in northern Spain, but I didn't like the plots of land there or the price was too high, on average it is 3 times more expensive. My plot is at the foot of a mountain and partly in a mountainous area surrounded by pine forest with terraces, I really liked it. The soil there is also a good balance between clay, sand and limestone, the soil is permeable, well drained but at the same time moisture-intensive. There is a system of irrigation from the Erbo River, but water is not a cheap pleasure. When I studied the maps of annual precipitation, there should have been 450-550 mm of precipitation per year. But last year there was 380 mm of precipitation, this year the situation in that region was better, but August was with 0 precipitation per month and September only 40 mm. Although spring and early summer fell above the annual norm. All the fields are plowed, water evaporates from the fields and the temperature rises, which ultimately repels water in the atmosphere and rain successfully falls into the sea :) I still hope that permaculture techniques can improve the situation on the site many times, there is a lot of pine forest nearby and a lot of biomaterial that I will use for mulching the soil and carry out maximum planting of all tiers with plants to create shade, in the beginning of course an irrigation system will be necessary. But in general, Colombia is very attractive for this, but they banned planting paulownia there - and I really love this tree and the prices for land plots have jumped over the past 5 years and they have become more expensive than in Spain, of course, a lot depends on the region.

Out here on the highveld of south Africa we have been having summer weather with highs of 32 degrees Celsius and the temperature suddenly plummeted to 5 degrees Celsius yesterday and it's 4 degrees Celsius tonight with much of the country covered in snow with roads closed and severe weather conditions all round. Next week sometime our local weather will go back up to 30 degrees. Unfortunately we didn't get any rain or snow just bitterly cold weather with a lot of wind and dust

Dear Martin. Greetings from Wellington, New Zealand. I thought I would share with you our recent weather patterns FYI - after a dryish summer and winter spring has brought lots of rain - we got 43 mm in one day on Monday - that makes five days of above 20 mm in one day for this month. Wonderful update. SO exciting to see the actual perimeter of the half moon distribution and settling pool in place. I'm guessing there is one more course of block to define the sluice gates? Maybe just 1/2 block - several blocks wide for the emergency overflow? All of the work you have done is grand. I imagine the pool will collect sediment washed off the mountain like a 'decantador'. It won't be long before the bottom of the pool starts to fill with sand - creating one more large and quite effective water saver and infiltration structure on the farm. We are all so excited to see this distribution pool at work! So I had to check Accuweather - possible showers on Thursday 9/19 and again on 9/25 & 26. Then we are into October... Nice to see the vetiver growing and spreading with vigor. You will likely be able to take many divisions early next spring 👍 At 4:11 I think I see paulownia trees off in the distance. If so, they grew very well through the summer and look quite vigorous. A great specimen for growing shade quickly. You have the opportunity to do some meaningful chop and drop with the lowest branches this fall. More organic matter for the soil! 😉
