THE BEST WAY TO DOSE KALKWASSER?
Dosing Kalkwasser can be tricky without a proper reactor stirring the mixture. Luckily there are other ways to make a proper kalk solution to dose your reef tank!

You could just say thank you instead of the air quotes. Haha. I'm glad the sps are growing now. You're doing it the right way.
lol now I’m giving GOOD ADVICE! Thanks 🤟🏽
@@whatthereef I never said that lol
This looks awesome. Have you run into any issues with green hair algae? I’ve had a Waterbox 35.2 for about two years and GHA is my main issue. I’ve been looking into UV as a preventative measure. I know UV doesn’t kill it once established.
👏🙌👌🤙
I'd remove the pump as once you mix kalk to max solution there is no need to continually mix. Mixing after actually makes the strength weaker as you introduce co2. I would also dose exclusively at night to combat the ph dip and create a smaller wave in ph swings. Check out Chris Meckleys method he uses at ACI. This will create an initial all swing but with the stable higher 8.2-8.3 ph levels your corals will not be negatively affected by the higher alk levels and this will eventually come back down as your corals grow.
Dude. Just talked me out of the hobby in one video. Saw the tank was on sale around $230 and thought it was a neat idea. Im stunned a tiny setup would be this expensive.
DO IT! lol these were prices of brand new equipment. There are a bunch of places online where you can get really good deals! Other than the cost I think what’s more important is if you’re going to have time to maintain the tank!
How long does it take to heat up a full tank
I use it on my 30 gallon mixing station and if the water is cold it can take half the day! I would recommend the INKBIRD.
Nice!!! Btw how many gals?
Thanks! 160 gallons total, 114 gallons display
Am I able to just leave a small wave maker in my kalk mix so it doesn’t settle or will it over mix it from the wave maker being on to long?
I don’t think that would be a problem As long as your not dosing the white residue. Gonna do some research on that myself
Good lord is that a black tang? Real or hybrid? Beautiful either way!
lol it’s a koi tang blue and gold! It just looks black in certain light!
Useless bullshit
The video was cool product sucks! Peppermint shrimp took care of any aptasia in the tank!
I was there today I always wanted to know what it looked like from the top of the tank and I have a question what is that massive sting ray kinda looking thing if u know what I’m talking about If I could I would jump in there
The behinds the scenes tour is pretty cool! You should do it next time. I think it’s just really big sting rays ?
“The massive sting ray kinda looking thing”, I think it might be a manta ray.
What size is this fish tank?
160 gallons
@@whatthereefsick! I’m happy you didn’t overstock this, and you left tons of room for the fish to swim
Found anything with the Oceanguard you don't like yet?
Wish the sump was a bit bigger! The section next to the sump for “storage” is waste of space in my option, could have been more space for a bigger sump! Other than that the tank and stand itself is super nice and built well.
@@whatthereef it sure looks a bit cramped in the pictures but I ended up order a 605 to after watching your films.
@Daniel_SWE that’s awesome! You’re gonna love it!
TOO SMALLLLLLLLL
I am failed I didn’t find dr Tim ammonia products I added bright well ammonia and it’s been 14 th days ammonia is 0.25/ nitrit 0/ nitrat 0.4
What is that container with the white powder on the left side of the carbon bag? is it Kalk?
Little trick I learned from a reefing buddy! Just some salt to keep salinity stable! All those automatic water testers use tank water and it can slowly creep down salinity. This help that
@@whatthereef oh wow that's interesting. thanks!
I saw Nemo
Where did you get that acclimation box
Amazon
You don't know what you are doing. You have to pour in the "slushy stuff" and MIX IT, you need a mixer.... STOP GIVING BAD ADVICE.
There was already slush in the bottom of the ATO doing it this way is already risky. Also you DONT want the slush going into the system
@whatthereef That's why you have to mix the powder with the water... There only slush because you're not mixing it. High chance you're not actually adding kalk to your tank because it settles to the bottom of the container.... STOP GIVING BAD ADVICE.
@audiomanmik just following guidelines of Chris Mackley and he doesn’t mix just adds kalk to the container. Recently got a doser and got it dosing from a separate container
Are those rocks the ones that come with the tank?
No rocks come with the water box.
@@whatthereef ahhhh I believe you can add them on. What rock package did you use? I love your scape!
Thank you! Had some left over rocks from Aquaforest
Why is the yellow tang in prison?
lol just so the fish get used to each other. Also a safety in case of aggression!
@@whatthereef Thanks I figured it was something like that
You're not running zero phosphate or zero nitrates with so many fish. Either you do tons of water changes, or you added so much buffer (kalkwasser), raised PH and nothing grows. That coral algae if real is the reason why you are running " as too clean". In other words, you are on the extreme end of the spectrum (tons of buffer and high PH)
This was the early days of the tank noting was being dosed
Petco fish are usually healthier than most LFS. Don't buy the hype.
I guess depends on who is working the fish area and maintaining it. You can tell if they are passionate about it or just clocking in hours.
I first had a silver spot tang on its own with clowns & damsels then after two months added a sailfin tang, they got on fine right away. After another month or so I added a smaller Regal Tang and she got bullied by all esp the sailfin and damsels, after two days of hiding she came out and held her own, now all tyre get along absolutely fine you can see in my latset video ☺️ I think tangs from the same genius are ok together in the long term 👌🏼 Great update keep up the good work 🙌🏻
Yea usually if there is any bullying is only a day or two if it’s more than that I’d worry! Tried to look up your channel couldn’t find it can you send it here?!
@@whatthereef it's just Dans Reef & not the 9229 Need to try and change that asap really ☺️
The XR15 has high intensity lenses that will increase your par.
Yea instead of three of these one xr15 would have been more than enough!
No such thing as easy reefing without accepting sacrifices. If you want fancy hard to keep corals and fish, you need to put ridiculous effort in. If you want a simple tank, just add less demanding fish and simple soft corals. Get rid of that moorish idol and the Anthias or you will really struggle to keep nutrients in check. Focus on the basics 1 - Salinity - shocking the amount of ppl mess this up. It throws all other readings out so monitor it religiously and keep it as stable as possible. Don’t forget to calibrate tester regularly - min once a month. 2 - Phosphates - absolutely critical to most corals. If it’s zero, start dosing it until it starts to read at least.03. 3 - PH - Above 8.3 for corals to grow properly. You might need kalk for this depending on your salt mix and room conditions. 4 - KH - 8 or above and keep it as level as possible. 5 - Nitrates - Don’t worry if they are stable and less than 50. Trying to reduce this too quickly has a tendency to reduce phosphates to non detectable readings which is just bad news. If a problem takes a while to appear, it should take a while to disappear. Nothing in this hobby happens fast and the first year is always the most challenging with the most changes happening. I think what actually happens is that the longer it’s running, the less we tinker and it becomes naturally more stable on its own. I’ve watched a few of your videos this week and am kinda sorry i didn’t see some of then them earlier as you are repeating the same mistakes many of us have already experienced. In saying that, reefing is defo a bit of trial and error mixed with some “you only learn from your mistakes”. Last thing I’ll say is, there is a lot of BS on the net about best practices and tips. Find a local hobbiest that has a lot of proven success and become his /her friend. Actually find multiple people if you can. Their advice and experiences will be far greater than any google experts.
Ridiculous effort YES! lol yea after having a 3rd kid my time is very limited so “maintenance” is not where it used to be. So yes like you said easier corals is going to be a must, easy as in no more sps for now haha. I like to show my trial and errors to viewers because just like you said the internet is full of BS. Just like to be transparent in my videos to show the real side of reefing! Moorish idol has mood swings as of now it’s good so it stays lmao
@@whatthereef yeah dude, great that you show it all. A lot of people would have given up already but stick at it and you will be rewarded. Just on the Moorish Idol, they are not reef safe and feeding it so often will nuke your tank eventually. Just my 2 cents
@NoelG-IRE appreciate it! This tanks runs super low nutritions so moorish being in there is some what helping before I got it I was dosing phosphate and nitrates
Took your advice on the moorish he’s gone to a local reefer
@@whatthereef man, I know it’s hard to let fish go, but that’s defo the best move you could make here. Your corals have a proper chance now. It’s a shame as the moorish idle really is stunning, but they sit in the fish only category for a reason and even then you don’t always get one that readily feeds easy. They are up there with copperbands in terms of difficulty and even then, you can’t really put them with anything too fast swimming or aggressive. One day I will defo do a FOWLR as there are far too many pretty fish-only species that I really want to keep. Clown Trigger, puffer, grouper etc. I also want to try a native tank using only items I collect from my local beaches here in Ireland.
Queue the my nitrates and phosphates are off the charts.
I have/had two of the 400wt on my 400 gal total system temp would swing from 77 to 79. That’s to much of a swing for me.
Yea think they should just stick it pumps! Lol
Sorry champ, but I don't think you understand how a hose barb works....🤣 The smaller fitting is the correct size, put the tube in some hot water for a couple of minutes to soften up, then force it over the end of the hose barb. The inside diameter of the hose barb should be the same or slightly bigger than the inside diameter of the tube. The stretch of the tube over the outside of the hose barb is what holds it on without a clamp. You may also find it helps to put the hose barb in the freezer overnight to shrink it in size, then heat your tube and jam it on quick.
I used barb fittings never had to heat it up just a bit of force
Good luck my friend. Thanks for the mention of the new hygger pump. So cost friendly! 👏🙌👌✌️

Thank you!
Run a power head in the res so it doesn’t just settle to the bottom
No I am scared
Can you use this to vary the pump throughout the day, so you hit different parts of the tank? That way you save a wavemaker??
Just constant speeds. Doing what you want, wouldn’t that affect your ato level sensor?
@@whatthereef what about if it’s an all in one tank like a water box mini and you don’t use an ato? Would that work, so you could have high flow some times and low flow at other times??
@pn7836 I used this on a waterbox cube 20. I mean if you’re going to top off manually then I guess you would be fine. If you want flow I would just get a wave maker!
@@whatthereef just want to minimise and have a super simple set up 🙂. Probably only going for a 10 gallon with softies so if I don’t need wavemaker even better!
@pn7836 if its a 10 gallon this pump might be too much! Just use the pump they give with the waterbox 10 cube if your getting a waterbox?
painted for sure... otherwise they would have similar color on the backside.. but they look nice though
Just bought one, mainly because it was the best fit wattage size for my tank, but now I have to put my hand AND MY PHONE in the tank to adjust or check the temperature. WTH
Once you calibrate it you can see the temp on the app. You shouldn’t have to mess with the temp after you set it. I agree probably not the best design..
What return nozzle and filter media are you using ?
Vca nano Radom flow generator. As for media nothing really at the time maybe some gfo to control phosphates
What do you use for filtration. Also what nozzle is that on your return pump??
Feed it woth sponges and go for 7/10 feeding a day, they burn fat crazy fast, They need a non stop food feeding to balance what they burn. It's like a ferrari, you just have to put a lot of fuel in it ! Mysis are okay but should not be the main part of their diet !! I feed mine a lot, with sponges and algae, some high quality pellet ( dki ) And lobster eggs. I sometimes give mysis and brine shrimps, but also squid and mussel meat
I have a to feeder set to 6 micro feeding a day plus 2 clips of nori and then frozen and reef nutrition food when I’m home. Idol just stopped eating all of the sudden!
@@whatthereef damn, these fishes are sensitive, if the water quality did not changed, maybe it is the ratio between fiber and protein/fat... or this could be one million other things... Just keep trying tour best, keep going in the hobby ! These fishes are extremely hard to keep, even in larger systems
@bruylanta.7069 yea I thought I got lucky at first eating like a cow for the last 6 months but now this! Yea time will will hopefully starts back up!
What is that white power stuff might need to get me some to clean my wavemakers
Sicce pump cleaner, works pretty well. Literally will take off anything even think coralline!
@@whatthereef thanks checking it out
From what I’ve seen and read they need a high fiber diet, not much protein. They typically die from constipation because of too much protein
Moorish and the two tangs would eat 2 pieces of nori a day! So odd hopefully just a phase
If you stop doing water changes, don't you need to use active carbon and/or even ozone? Coral warfare will be going on in your tank and there will be other compounds present that your ICP test won't show!
Toothbrush bro
New to your channel so you may have covered this but what lights are you running?
3 radios xr15 g5 and g6 with two AI blade grow/glow. Probably should have just gotten two XR30s though
Such a coincidence. I just cleaned my AF overflow box, yesterday as well. My main siphon tube, looked identical to yours. Covered in sponges. Grab a Bucket head from Home Depot. Much easier to get the overflow nice and clean.
It was almost completely covered! Definitely going to get a bucket head to clean my sump out as well!
I just noticed you have 3 clownfish in your tank...how has that worked out for you? Any issues with aggression?
Let’s just say there was 3 different pairs at one point.. now there is one and a half pair left lol also one living in the sump 😂
@@whatthereef is the one banished to the sump the problem?
@CopperCanyonTerrapins it can change from pair to pair the ones that got bullied first “long fin” are now dominant in the tank
