    I think that searching for "2018 Mexican special edition Strat" would be the way to nail down the model quick. As you said, there's no other indicator as to the model on the guitar itself and so people will naturally use that in listings and searches, whether they themselves are trying to identify one or simply trying to sell it for the best possible price. Also, as soon as I saw the brass trem block my first thought was that it had been modified/upgraded so that would set my spidey senses tingling and searching out other stuff like pickups etc. If someone's doing that to an MX Strat then probably they're going to throw in a set of U.S.A pickups too. Nice that it's seemingly got a Pure Vintage set as well. Another thing, I think that marking on the sticker under the scratchplate is a 7 with a cross-bar, rather than an F Congrats, reckon you got a good deal here

    I bought a 2012 MIM Standard upgraded much like yours. However, I think maybe done before Fender sold the loaded pickguard as a kit. Mine was essentially upgraded with a Fat 50s pickguard aged and trem block, bone nut and vintage tuners. But seller gave me all the genuine fender parts cardboard packaging and invoices from shops that did all the work including the bone nut and setup. I bought the guitar for less than the loaded pickguard and bone nut invoices . It also happens to be my “thoughtless” first grab guitar, over any American or otherwise guitars. It rules.

    I own 14 guitars. They're all priced between $500 to $1,500. Every one of them are excellent top notch guitars that feel like they're tailor made for me. I just can't see or justify paying anymore than $1,500 on a guitar. I don't think you're going to get any better quality for a guitar that's $2,000+ in my opinion.

      Fender (and pretty sure Gibson and Yamaha) all have serial number look up databases. Just Google Fender Serial Lookup or whatever brand you want. Then you enter the number and you will usually get a result that tells you the model and year.

    Once I bought an "Yngwie Malmsteen" pre-wired pickguard. The box was legit and fully wrapped in plastic, and the picture on the instructions matched the pickguard. I spent $389 on the pickguard and thought I was super special. I loved the sound of the pickups and the great wiring job. Fast forward to when Sam Ash closed, and they were selling a MIM Player for a ridiculous $550. Normally it was $889, so I jumped on it. Plus, I happened to have a ton of parts for upgrades on hand. Anyway, I liked the Malmsteen pickguard and was going to toss the MIM pickguard and all the parts on it. So, I took it off to do so... The stock pickguard on the MIM was exactly the same as my $389 "Malmsteen" pickups, electronics, pots, everything. I'm talking the same part numbers, even the same handwriting on the pickups. What are the chances? It looked like literally the same guy did both pickguards. Even the SKU on the pickguard was the same. My $389 "Malmsteen" pre-wired pickguard upgrade was nothing but a standard stock pickguard they throw in a standard MIM Player... Wow, did I munch a sandwich of marketing bullshit on that one. But I had to admit, I loved the pickups and the way they sounded when I thought they were expensive. Totally caught myself being a price dick. In reality, I love the MIM standard pickups. Who'd have known? Funny thing, if you buy the next guitar up, the base "American Pro," I kid you not, it's actually got worse parts for twice the cash, haha. Marketing bullshit. Oh well... admitted.. I was fooled.

    1:01 Generally in these matters people only think matter, material, physical things. However, when you buy online at a music store website, over a certain price point the guitar you bouy is set up (and gets more quality control).This makes a (huge) difference for the playability of the guitar you get. This guitar is from a store. So over that certain price point and in that store immaterial things were added to the guitar; attention and labor. During the pandemic I bought some budget guitars. You copuld [lay them but not finesse stuf, action too high, (acoustic) nut and bridge clearly need (precision) work. After that i bought a higher priced guitar online and one in a store. both came set up and are a delight to play. Countless youtube channels are actually about, or better exist because of this unpredictability of the playability of guitars bought online, ignoring what is decisive in that. Most buyers can't set up, let alone adjust the nut and the bridge, so they have to do with what comes out of the box. They think it's the brand or the model, the wood and the hardware. It's the labor. and the amount of labor and human attention also determines the consistency of the specimens in a production batch or the batches compared to each other. Labor also is the most costly part, certainly in QC. Guess what happens when demand a good piece of wood, good PUs, locking tuners, d'Addario strings, but tells the guy in the factory to put it together and string it in four minutes, then put it in the box immediately, no second pair of eyes to check the quality, no second pair of hands to check the action... Since this Fender came from a store you can't compare it to the online alternatives.

    Pacificas come in series 0/100s up to 600, rising in prices to far over $1000. This is the most basic Pacifica, 012. Generally beginners start with one from the 100s series, like 112, that have good reputation, for over 30 years already. So its hard to call this 'a Pacifica' as if this is what you get buying a Pacifica..

    The necks are not 'unfinished'.... If that were the case, they'd soak up humidity like a sponge and warp.... All guitar necks have a finish... The Pacifica (... I have one...) is finished in a light 'silk' lacquer... My Squier 'Custom' Tele neck is likewise finished. There is nothing to really choose between any guitars of the sub $250 price point... They're all made of poplar, lime or boxwood... Basic maple or nato necks, And the cheapest hardware available. My Pacifica is a tad better appointed as it was the 'Variax' Standard model, so was well finished. .... With the same truss-rod PLUG, but with modern die-cast enclosed machine heads .... Those chrome covered jobs are the epitome of 'cheap-n-nasty'....

    • @JayceAllanGuitar
      @JayceAllanGuitar 12 годин тому

      Well, it does soak up humidity. It's not going to warp unless the humidity changes too quickly, like it you leave it in a hot car or something. I have unfinished maple neck blanks in my garage that expand and contract with the humidity changes are don't warp. I scraped the neck with a scalpel and if it has a finish on it, it's the thinnest you'll ever find. It feels bare compared to the Debut. And I've got 3 strat style guitars, all under $200, two of them were less than $100, two of them have ash bodies, one has Alnico pickups and full size pots, one is poplar, all the necks are maple and they all have actual rosewood fretboards.

    It was fairly easy to pick out the Fender. The chime and the clarity was easily the best among the lot. I have them in this order if I have to rank them: 1. Fender 2. Firefly 3. Tease 4. Squier Debut For the money if stock then Firefly all day long. I believe you mentioned you paid around $650 for the Fender used, and for that money, it would be Fender. The quality on the Fender, in my experience, while not perfect, it is consistently much higher than what people mention on the internet boards, and I'd gladly pay the extra $300 for the better QA, electronics, pickups and just overall ease of modification down the line.

    For chording, I know I didn’t choose the Debut as the Fender… I believe I had the Firefly as the Fender. I did get the MIM as the Fender when you did the bridge solo notes but I think I also picked the Tease one also as the Fender which was not correct. The bottom line is I think you proved it’s a close call and without top line Fender pickups I think it’s hard to actually pick out a Fender from non-Fender. I think your price comparison is a little off. You got ripped off if you paid over $600 for that. They charged you like it was a MIM Players Series model but that’s really just a MIM Standard (2008-2018). You’re comparing two different models if you’re looking at specs & prices for MIM Players Series instead of MIM Standard Series. A new Players Series Strat might sell for $700+ new but a MIM Standards like that didn’t. MIM Standards sold for under $600 back when they were new & I only paid about $450 for mine back when it was brand new around 2013.

    I like inexpensive guitars, but at the same time, since when is two or even three thousand dollars a lot of money? And for an instrument that wil bring you a lifetime of joy. Since when? Three thousand dollars ain't shit. That's how I see it. I mean if you can save a hundred dollars, you can save a thousand. But at the same time, i still agree that you don't have to spend a lot to get a good guitar. My next guitar is going to be a Yamaha FG800. Not because it's cheap, because it's good! Just like a US made Fender is good. And yes, part of what you pay for is the logo, a Logo that earned its reputation. I don't see anything wrong either way you go. Expensive or inexpensive. As long as I can get my money back, I'll buy a cheap guitar with a quickness, why not?

    • @JayceAllanGuitar
      @JayceAllanGuitar 15 годин тому

      Not sure how to respond to that. Three thousand dollars can be a ton of money for some people. In fact, I consider myself financially stable yet I'm not sure I could stomach paying $3000 for a guitar. But hey, you do you.

      @RobertWrayGuitar "In all honesty, an investment of $2,000 to $3,000 isn’t substantial, especially for professionals investing in their music careers. It’s all about the return on investment. Low-cost guitars often sound and feel cheap because they are, and they’re unlikely to stand the test of time. In my view, it’s better to bypass the inexpensive, off-brand knockoffs that are mass-produced and instead opt for a reputable brand. Why should we let ourselves be exploited? Even hobbyists should consider investing a bit more into a quality product. The idea of buying a low-cost guitar and upgrading it with high-end parts seems misguided to me. Purchasing a cheap, off-brand guitar for under $200, only to invest an additional $200 or more to fix it, doesn’t make financial sense. It’s a poor business practice. If I were to buy one of these inexpensive guitars online without seeing it firsthand, I’d likely end up spending hundreds more to have it serviced by a professional. So, a guitar that initially cost me just under $200 could end up costing me what I would have spent on a good entry-level Fender, around the $600 to $700 range. In conclusion, the guitar modding community on UA-cam, in my opinion, lacks credibility. But then again, who am I to judge? I’m just a UA-camr who enjoys pretending to be a rock star, even though I clearly lack the singing and guitar-playing skills." 😊but I do know this I am not a stupid man, & I did study Economics... at the end of the day it's a very stupid thing to reinvest in such a silly notion. it comes down to basic Economic principles with respect to the Yamaha FG800 that's a good product, but some unsuspecting retail shopper would buy an off brand ,& end up finding out it's junk all because it came with all the eye candy & a saving of like 50 bucks.. like the old adage if it sounds too good to be true it probably is . I have lost 100% respect for those modding channels that pump out Cheapos they are either stupid or very cleaver anyone that studied basic econ 101 knows this is a stupid thing to do enough said . just my opinion.

      Well. I can't speak for other people. But here's my take. First, if you're a gigging professional or studio musician, sure buy the brand names or the more expensive models. If money is no object or you're fine putting yourself in debt to own a brand name, then go for it. No judgement here. But some of us don't want to spend $3000 on a single guitar, when that $3000 can buy us, three or four cheap guitars, a couple pedals and maybe an amp. Then we have something to tinker with. If you end game is to simple own a guitar and play only THAT guitar then, fine, go for the brand name. But some of us like trying out odd balls and off brand and to see just how far we can push our dollars. Many of us can't tell the difference between a $200 guitar and a $2000 guitar (electrics here, not acoustic). At the end of the day it's all about doing what you want and love. I find it interesting that this entire subject is so hotly debated. I mean, no one's asking anyone to give up their expensive guitar. Also, modding a guitar is like buying a plain car or truck and modding it. It's just fun.

    I think I am just going to get a cheap Jackson or Dean or Ibanez, do the neck and fretwork to set up the guitar properly, then upgrade the parts. I think I will have less money in the guitar that way and will still have a great guitar. I have a couple decent guitars but I'd like more, but I'd like to work on them.

    Thanks for sharing! Both before and after mods made workable noises. If anything I am more surprised the stock sounded actually fine, may be a smidge thin, but not the end of the world! Apparently the tonal changes hinge more on the pot values and the capacitor, and the tone bleed. I too am doing mods and those are the areas I am focusing on.

      I wasn't all that impressed with the Wilkinson pickups. A little to vintage stratty sounding. Maybe just changing the tone and volume with good quality parts would have made a difference.

    There are well made, inexpensive guitars and then there are cheap and cheaply made guitars (Glarry for one) that really aren't worth wasting a hundred bucks on. Beware of anything you can buy for less than $200.00 bucks.

      It can be a crap shoot. My Firefly strat was around $150, black Friday deal. That guitar is bonkers. So many high end features and the build quality is impeccable. But the Squier Debut is a bit chinch. I also have a GearIt Tele that is pretty bad. The bridge is too far forward. Had to move it. Then got a Auriga strat, that was $100 and it's awesome. It had some fret sprout, but it's a great guitar. If I had that guitar starting out, I would have been very happy. So it can be a mixed bag for sure.

    A good guitar is finished and polished and set up with more attention than a shitty one, that's the main difference. you can buy a Pacifica or Squire and spend time making it play very well if you know what you are doing. A custom shop guitar is always way better because experts spend hours making it play well. I built a Stu Mac strat and it sucks because I don't know what I'm doing but I have a Squire Strat that plays very well I got for free.

      Building is a challenge, because leveling frets and neck angle and all that can be a challenge. Setting the bridge and scale length. I hand built a Tele a while back and made the neck and everything. It was a decent guitar, but still had to take it to someone to level and dress the frets.

    I bought an ESP EC256 made in Indonesia for $700 AUD. Great guitar, no issues with the neck or hardware. Tuners not premium, but rock solid tuning stability notheless. Wanting a more premium guitar, so bought a Fender Vintera Telecaster Deluxe on special for $1400 AUD. The neck has multiple issues: sharp fret ends, lacquer over the nut and all fret ends, hump on the neck as well. The guiitar also shipped with some lose neck screws so neck kept shifting. Man, I miss my "cheap" ESP.

    How would you rate the dst-400 against the squire Affinity? The reason I ask is that you can find the Affinity cheaper than the Donner on their website and it seems like the affinity might be a better buy.

    • @JayceAllanGuitar
      @JayceAllanGuitar День тому

      Well, the DST is an Alder body. I think Rosewood fretboard. Alnico pickups. The semi transparent green if beautiful. They are not available right now on Donners site. You can find them on eBay and Reverb. I wouldn’t pay more than $200 for it. But they are a very solid guitar. The pickups are very vintage sounding. Overall a great guitar.

      Well, yes and no. If things like Alnico pickups and Alder body mean something to you, then yes. Many people associate Alder body with better tone and Alnico pickups with quality. Also, I like a Rosewood fretboard over maple for looks. But then, you may want the "Fender" brand name. Personally I think you get more for your money with the DST400

    The Pacifica sounds a lot better than the Debut. If you consider the setup, the better pickups, better strings etc. out of the box, it's probably worth at least a hundred dollars more. It seems like around $500 is the sweet spot for a decent guitar, and after that it's diminishing returns that only experts will really appreciate, with aesthetics being a large part of it. After a few thousand dollars you're getting into collector value and extravagant customs.

      I would argue that if you can snag a Firefly strat, you can get a guitar that is really comparable to a MIM Strat. Maybe even better. Same with Donner DST400 and even some of the cheap Chinese guitars. Problem is. It’s hit or miss as to whether you’ll get a good one.

  • @FortessofShred
    @FortessofShred День тому

    I don't mean to sound elitist, but... as a former MIM Strat owner (sold out of necessity, not the guitar), it still isn't close to being on the level of an American made Strat. It's just a fact. Having said that, MIM Strats are a hot-rodder's dream because if you swap out the electronics, and the bridge you can have a versatile, virtual shred machine! At that point you're getting to USA Strat prices though, so...
