Journey To The Geographical Center Of Europe

It was on Christmas morning that our family hopped in the car and headed out to see my wife’s grandmother at a care home. Immediately after, we headed over to the geographical center of europe - which is amazingly just a short 20 or 30 minute drive from the Vilnius city center!
It's a shame I cannot recommend this airline for the following reasons I was due to fly from Belgrade to Riga with AirBaltic in August 2024 with my partner. We are both disabled, were wearing our sunflower lanyards and additionally I was walking with a stick As we were waiting to board we were called out of line and told that due to overbooking we would not be able to board the flight. I told the staff that we had onward connections booked and we would miss the connections bvecause of this, I also informed them that we're both disabled and we were still denied boarding. This is a breach of the EU261/2004 Article 11 which basically states that disabled persons must be given priority to board over non-disabled passengers. We were then booked onto another flight with a connection in Buidapest to arrive in Riga around 1700 instead of 0600. When I again mentioned the issue of our onward connection we were told that the staff in Riga would help us with this. We were then put on the flight via Budapest When we arrived in Budapest we requested assistance from the Air Baltic staff we were told to take care of ourselves. At this stage it was obvious we would have to probably stay overnight in Riga and travel onwards the next day to Tallinn. This meant we had to cut Vilnius out of our itinerary and lose a day of our holiday. When we arrived in Riga we were given EU261 compensation of EUR250 for the denied boarding and when I asked for help with the accommodation and the onward travel we were told to book it ourselves and claim it back AirBaltic When I tried to claim this back from Air Baltic I was then told that because they had paid us the EUR 250 that they weren't obliged to repay our expenses. When I replied that under EU261/2004 Article 9 the Airline was obliged to provide Accommodation where a stay of one or more nights becomes necessary in addition the Airline was obliged to offer transport between the accommodation and support in the way of telephone calls, emails etc None of this was offered - The only assistance we received was a meal at Belgrade Airport. As far as the Air Baltic staff cared my partner and I could have been wandering the streets of Riga overnight I replied to Air Baltic quoting the legislation that they had breached and they haven't replied I wrote to Air Baltic at their Head Office in Riga and they haven't replied (And the letter was received) In addition to breaching the legislation they have also rendered their customer care committment null and void. Said committment reads 'If you are involuntarily denied boarding and have complied with our check-in and other applicable rules, we will give you a written statement that describes your rights. We will also rebook you to next fastest connection, offer refreshments, meal, hotel and transportation (if necessary) as well as pay compensation as prescribed by the Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council.' Shame on you AirBaltic
I would just massively suggest to not risk it so much, and consider doing index funds(ETFs or Mutual) and invest in local economy by picking funds that do that. I think it is a very good thing to do, and main reason why Europe (and Baltics) is so far behind, is simply that all investments from here (and all ove rthe wrold) to go US and not stay here. But still - diversify to protect your assets.
One big thing to also consider is that most stocks in the Baltics are not too liquid, so if you want to sell/buy 10k€ of stocks quickly you might actually see an impact on the stock price with your trades - this is probably not as big of a deal for 1bn+ companies but still something to keep in mind with large transactions.
Yes - thanks! Something for people to consider.
the reason why it takes 2 days for money to reach you in Swedbank is the T+2 logic. Basically all brokers have to close the deal in two work days and white more popular brokers assume the risk and transfer the money to you instantly, Swedbank just shows you that the process actually still takes two days, while other brokers do it as a backoffice thing
Nice to see you investing in the local companies rather than typical SPX500 or US tech
I wonder if the perception of increased risk of regional conflict keeps some people from investing here. But these days it feels like anything can happen anywhere 🧐
I started investing in Vilkyskiu pienie almost two years ago. My only Lithuanian stocks so far. Dividends weren't my primary focus, but I had both so far: dividends and growth over time. As part of my diversification plans, it is a suitable company. And yes, I like dairy products. 😅
I love your videos! You are such nice person. Doing the right things all the time! Very happy that these kind of people still exist

Very touching. As a German, I am very glad our reuinification events were peaceful. I talked to a Lithuanian about the events during my last train trip from Kaunas to Vilnius. I hope that you live with your wife in peace, prosperity and happiness, and that you take a new tour and share it with your friends from around the world. love it!!!!! Great job, and listen to what she said (something I preach often): "MAKE MISTAKES!!!" :) She is 1000% correct in that section, you WILL learn - the mistakes will help you learn and it will be appreciated that you tried (And succeeded) in getting the idea across! Keep up the momentum!
I've found that even just starting an interaction with what you already know and continue as needed with English or Translate builds confidence, "Atsiprašau, man reikia pagalbos..." Work with what you got. Doesn't hurt to have a handy vocabulary list at home of the 100, 500, and 3000 most commonly used words. ChatGPT4o can help with that - in fact, it's surprisingly and increasingly accurate considering Lithuanian has a smaller dataset compared to English, Spanish, French, German, & Italian.
Struggling with learning Lithuanian myself, I can relate. I am sure you will succeed eventually. I am not an English native, and I know that I make many mistakes. But I am not afraid, even amongst native speakers. And I agree with Agnė, Lithuanians are extremely happy when you at least try. During a business trip, we were introduced to a couple of Lithuanian managers. We all communicated in English, and everyone was a bit reserved, but when I replied to how I wanted to have my coffee in Lithuanian, there were smiling faces everywhere.
A lovely video. About the language it's true what Agne said. As a foreigner you have the power to create a smile on every Lithuanian person you speak with, when you try to speak in Lithuanian.
practice make permanent
It is hard. If you really want to learn it just take your time and don't force it. It will get better with time.
Practice makes perfect.
Hey, I totally get you. That’s how I felt like when I was learning English too 🙈. What was a game changer for me was to strictly incorporate English into my daily life. My best friend is American and I asked her to please only talk in English to me and I answer and when I’m struggling or use the wrong word or grammar to please correct me. That helped me a loooot. I felt lost at first. But it also made us laugh very often 😂! It helped a lot 🥰. We started out by my friend making a shopping list, we went shopping to buy ingredients for a dish and at home she gave me cooking instructions in English, and then we reversed the roles, I made the list for a dish and gave her instructions in English etc. 🥰 Of course we incorporated speaking English in normal talking - mistakes were usually making us laugh out loud because I built the most ridiculous German-English phrases 😂
I noticed Rimi just tends to be more expensive than other grocery stores and. Lidl and Maxima (with the Ačiū card) is a cheaper alternative.
love the ice rink
I can't keep up with Christmas eco trends. Once, we gave up natural Christmas trees in the name of being eco-friendly. Now they’re back, but we’ve ditched fireworks - in the name of being eco-friendly. A little bird told me that next season, we’ll be getting rid of Christmas lights so we can bring fireworks back - in the name of being eco-friendly :-)
Vilnius 2025 👍
Excellent video. I'm quite happy with the natural Christmas tree, even if I'm not a big fan of those metal arches which, in my opinion, are not necessary. As for "shaky footage", I'm sorry if I will sound like being too nosy and giving advice when it wasn''t requested, but as a vlogger I would consider getting top of the range flagship phone (no matter the brand, they're all very good these days) and/or something like a DJI Osmo handheld camera thingie which is not much short of incredible when it comes to making such videos. It really makes a massive difference in video quality you'll be able to deliver, walking or standing.
Very beautiful Christmas Lofi music and nice video footage :). Thanks for sharing!
there's costco all over the world you know

>non-white hands yeap and the fact you sound asian explains everything
you got this! Once your son starts talking, he will teach YOU (that's what happened with me and my godson, Kevinas - all the mistakes I made, or not knowing words, really forced him to figure out a way to correct me) - you are lucky, also, in one regard: you CAN practice daily in your enviroment! I wish I had that - at home, here in the USA, we speak a rough 60/40 (english, lithuanian) - but a lot of times I will speak to Nijole in LT and she answers in English, so, the fact that you live in a city where it's the main language is to your advantage. Belt out those mistakes, learn from them, and continue to get better! (I think we found you in the pic, btw, lol - not 100% sure though)
One thing that those classes probably miss is the "slang" or real words that people use in real life. Not only swear words (which are an absolute must!), but also some less ordinary sentence constructions or use of words that aren't the norm in formal language. I would probably recommend to watch something like Samoshka travel vlog who speaks in a rather funny Žemaitian dialect, but often uses structures and words which are more "real" than the formal language which you'll be learning in class. Good luck with your studies.
Žemaitian 🤣
@@Moliugas89 Well, yes. I mean how else would you call it in English? :D
@@DS.J "Žemaitiškas" arba "Samogitian" tikriniai daiktavardžiai nėra verčiami. Bet lotyniškas Samogitia jau ilgai naudojamas agliškuose tekstuose, todėl abu žodžiai gali būti vartojami.
@@Moliugas89 Who knows/cares about Samogitian. We're not language study nerds here, that's for sure. Žemaitian (Žemaitiškai), on the other hand, is well known and understood by everyone. And who gives a f*ck if it's verčiami or not verčiami. I say, Žemaitian ftw, what now? :)

But you are Canadian. What was your exposure to french? No idea if that would even be useful in learning Lithuanian though.
In my home province we learned the French language basics up until the age of about 14. I can do basic conjugations and the usual pleasantries but I never attained fluency- that’s why I still consider myself uni lingual. on the west coast most Canadians in the regular school system wouldn’t get much further unless they had reason to practice or use French. But yes I do think learning those basics helped with my foundational Lithuanian- exposure to verb conjugations that are somewhat different from English.
Who will learn faster Lithuanian.. son or father? :P
.. please look at that nagging like nagging from old aunt, who wishes all the best for you :)
Sūnus 100% 😂 Young minds are so quick to pick things up! And they don’t need to go to work 😛
100% his son. It's so much easier for the youth to learn new languages, the differences is incredible when compared to adults.
