That is what happens when you sell to a big American company. It is all about profits over quality. The bottom line is more important. If PG Tips fails under the new ownership I won't be surprised if PG Tips is sold again.

We knew that Lipton's tea is a big seller over there. I didn't realise it wasn't highly regarded. We will be doing iced tea next year and Liptons will be top of the list.

Nice shirt today, Nige! I truly enjoy these "history of the leaf" videos! We all of us drink Assam in our Breakfast Teas, which provides the "punch" (as mentioned by Anders) appreciated in such brews. A cup of pure Assam is a bit malty, with notes of fig and honey in quality brands. A most enjoyable brew in the cooler months. And I'm in agreement with Chris: loose leaf is the better way to have this tea. Assam Golden Tips is the type I purchase here in the States, and the best by far that I have found. In any case, enjoy your Assam purchases, - thank you, Gents, for the informatively entertaining video and for all which you do for the community. Cheers!

Love Assam but there are good and bad examples. I find generally Assam does better in orthodox large leaf style, or a very good Assam in CTC (stay well away from Asda's offering). Its generally a malt bomb as you mention, but I've had some with noticeable fruit/berry notes and very nice they were. Stay away from bags is my advice, the tea inside is usually very fine and over-extracts Assam.

Just tried some Yorkshire tea mad in UAE in the traditional string bag, just meh and actually quite bitter. I have been drinking the Taylors English Breakfast and figured I would give their less expensive brand a go and boy was it less in flavor as well. Liptons is better than that cheap string bag Yorkshire made in UAE.

Good morning, Gents! Happy mid-week. Darjeeling First Flush: truly the champagne of teas, although I've heard the same descriptor used for Oolong tea (another brilliant type). A definitive winner! Shoppers can now add with confidence a box of Tesco's Finest Darjeeling into their trolleys. Perhaps in the end you should offer a "tea ladder" for your competitions as do the various sporting contests, leading to the all-time indisputable winner. Fans would come from fare and wide to witness the results. And, I'm sure, the various betting venues would even get in on the action. In any case, thanks for the reviews and the enjoyable video, and, as always, what you do for the community. Cheers!

What Ho, Gents?! Again, thank you for taking the plunge: iced tea! And even though we're entering chilly season, iced tea is always on the menu as it offers a delicious alternative to other cold and/or room-temperature beverages (looking at you, soda) that is also sugar-free and calorie-free. And, Iced tea can be paired with virtually any meal. Here in Maryland, US (the crossroads of North vs South), there are those who still add sugar to their tea; however, unsweetened iced tea is the norm: restaurants offer unsweetened tea and then offer sugar to be added by the drinker. Whereas in the South, tea is automatically sweetened and when one asks for an iced tea, one does not have a choice since the sugar (in various amounts of copiousness) is already added. Definitely a regional thing, and why half the population of the South dies from diabetes each year. I kid, I kid, except for the no-choice part: iced tea in the South is ALWAYS sweetened, which is why it is colloquially known as "Sweet Tea." As always, thanks for the official tasting and well done on using Yorkshire Gold. Correct, Lipton is the most popular tea here in the States. So, a video featuring Lipton would be most welcome. I will say that those who prefer sweetened tea have the right of it: sugar added at the initial making of the tea is preferred as it prevents residual sugar crystals from collecting at the bottom of one's iced tea glass. Nevertheless, a simple syrup can be added to iced tea to sweeten tea which prevents the unsightly sugar crystal accumulation. Restaurants of higher quality do this as a matter of course here in the States. A win-win situation for all lovers of iced tea. Until the next time. Cheers!

Hi Mark, thank you for that most comprehensive response. I've got to say I don't like the sound of the iced tea from the southern States. I like to have control. We'll be checking out a load more recipes next year and, as you say, Liptons will have to be done. Cheers!!

What Ho, Gents? How nice to be awash in many tea and coffee options for the chilly months ahead. Battle of the giants, both supermarkets and presenters. That Nige: such a cavalier! And thanks for the disclaimer, Anders - I will forgo sampling any teas whilst the ongoing residuals of a butter bean stew are in effect. Nevertheless: Earl Grey - the brew which get's one through the worst that winter can throw our way. Sainsburry's: good underlying tea flavor; with artificial, not-in-a-bad-way talcum powder, quite-like-it-at-the-moment dryness, and maltiness tastes to round out the tasting. Tesco's: reminiscent of Williamson brand, get-beyond-the-first-sip; perfumey; flowery; quite-a-good-quality; surprisingly good tastes to round out the tasting. Agreement: Tesco's worth every bit of the extra fifteen pence! There we have it. But, is it enough to encourage an average American to make the trek to England...? Perhaps not. A good review, nonetheless, for those who will be chucking a box of Earl Grey into their trolley this weekend. Thank you for all your efforts and what you do for the community. Cheers!

Knew you'd land in the bags being better! I think we've all got a weird bias thinking its all floor sweepings when its clearly just great tea with the better ones. I've tried to dial in the loose different ways but it always ends in a bitterish cup im not interested in again quickly. A weird thing that only happens with gold loose is using a teapot strips the colour even more, nothing more off-putting then when it looks like you've milked it drunk when you haven't, and yes Nige the loose has Ceylon where the bag doesn't. I've done the blind tasting on the good old wife and everytime she prefers the bag. I think the regular is more closer as the loose is good but I still prefer the bag, sweeter cup (never use sugar and only a drop of milk) Last week I've spent a few quid of loose teas from Imperial teas in Lincoln, some lovely tasting teas but boy I'd never swap them for my bags. Honestly eye watering prices for Chinese and Indians teas.

This could explain why Yorkshire Tea has surpassed PG Tips as the number 1 and best selling tea brand in the UK since 2023 I think. I mean, Yorkshire Tea is owned by Taylors of Harrogate, which is a tea company known for making quality and premium teas since 1886. Yorkshire Tea Loose leaf tea actually does look more like actual tea leaves. The tea leaves PG Tips are using may not actually be the best quality tea leaves, but it does brew a good cup of tea for everyday use that has a unique flavor. It has something to do with their technology, which consumers would just say is marketing, but you can brew a strong good consistent cup of tea in less time compared to other tea brands. For example their loose leaf tea can be brewed in 1 to 2 minutes. Also their tea bags can be steeped longer than the recommended amount of time depending on the strength level of the tea you want, so steeping longer could make it extra strong. Basically if you are a fan of Taylors of Harrogate teas you will most likely like Yorkshire Tea because it is made like traditional tea, which is the point, so they don't have to advertise special technology that is unique to them or patented. Anyway marketing or not special patents and technology does give brands a unique flavor that is consistent. Coca Cola comes to mind. It taste the same regardless of what country you are in.

    • @punktea8142

The old PG Tips was not a bad cuppa. The new PG Tips is truly awful, but that is our opinion. There are teas out there for everyone.

  • @OsAbliNgin911
    @OsAbliNgin911 14 днів тому

When in doubt buy loose leaf tea. Loose leaf tea always taste better than tea bags. Plus the loose leaf tea from PG Tips does not look like your typical tea leaves. In fact it looks more like ground coffee, so you can actually brew it in a coffee machine like a Keurig. Tetley has similar looking tea leaves to PG Tips. Basically if you brew PG Tips in the Keurig K-mini or K-mini Plus machines you get a very strong cup of PG Tips, which maybe too strong for most folks to drink black. I add whole milk and stevia to my cup. PG Tips has always taste good with milk and sweetener to me, but Tetley taste like trash and week, but my mom loves Tetley tea and thinks it taste better than PG Tips. Anyway what is funny is if you brew PG Tips in the discontinued Keurig K-Mini K15 machine you get a strong cup of PG Tips, but somehow not too strong that it is actually delicious and enjoyable to drink without milk or sugar.

I'm nearly out of my pyramid bags and have just moved 2 mins walk from an Aldi, so I looked on their website and saw the box of gold. I thought "let's see what they're saying", went tap tap tap and there's those fun chaps Nige & Anders! Yay. Top result, and no doubt the top review. I can now rest assured when I walk home with my Diplomatic bag (er rucksack) that my kettle won't boil in vain, and be followed by a profane refrain and the not so diplomatic use of my rattan cane - my preferred method for the discipline of unworthy teabags. Funnily enough, after being an undisciplined home brewer (guys, I nearly killed myself. It was those gallons of wine rather than beer...) I'm getting back into drinking tea again, so it's a rather interesting parallel in occurrence here. Sorry, I won't leave too many silly comments. Keep Calm and Carry On, gents - the only way to survive the onslaught of life's challenges. How exciting: The World Series of British tea! So glad I bought tickets for this months ago. Drum roll, please. Wow - it seems as though both contenders miss the mark. Surprising that this contest ended in a draw - does this mean that both are good enough to pop in the trolley...? Sorry that I cannot personally try this challenge - perhaps next time I'm in Britain I will either give it a go there, or purchase the contenders and bring them home. Nonetheless, I still maintain that sips of water and/or a bite of a water cracker should be enjoyed between sips, to help separate the actual tastes and flavors of the contending brews. Just a thought, especially on such an occasion when each tea seems so similar initially as to warrant a number of continued sips of said brews. In the end, it seems that either tea is a good choice. Thank you, gentlemen, for all that you do for the community. Cheers!

Lidl red label can be hit or miss PER tea bag in my experience. One bag is fine, the next makes a brew like old dishwasher. Not good! The gold label is better, it is more consistent, but even then can be a bit inconsistent too. I guess if you pay cheap you do sometimes get cheap.

That's really interesting. Obviously we do so many teas that we may only do a couple of bags from each tea. Not aware of any inconsistency.

I quite like it, but I didn't when I first tried it. I also quite liked the ordinary biscuit and the strawberry jam. However, I wasn't overly keen on the bedtime one.

The ordinary biscuit one was the best of a bad lot when we looked at those first three teas. This one is much better, but that wasn't hard. The aroma for the jam one is amazing, but we found it did not transfer to the mug.

Soon they'll be making pumpkin-flavored tea for autumn! (Maybe they have already!) It's pumpkin spice everything here in the States. As for me, I accept bergamot in tea, but little else.

Oh good grief, you're right, pumpkin spice flavour can't be faraway 😬 I'm with you, bergamot is the only sane choice of flavour.

I tried the biscuit flavour and wasn't bowled over either, so I will give this one a miss. Thanks for the guidance. Would love to see Barrys Masterblend up against Thompsons Signature and Gelgettie, my 3 current favourite tipples. Love your work, thanks!

You are not missing much with this Yorkshire Tea. Lots of people are suggesting Barry's Masterblend, however it is not readily available in UK shops, only over the internet which is a bit pricey.

Oh, Nige...I feel your pain: nothing worse than the heartbreak of losing a tasting mug! However, you can take solace in your beautiful new studio. A very good testimonial: " I wouldn't buy another box; but, I probably won't be throwing the box out." Nonetheless, a delayed throwing out vs a definite throwing out, faffing about notwithstanding. Not sure if that if a positive review or not. Doesn't sound like a winner to me, and I must say there is not fouler flavor on the planet than artificial caramel, which seems to be everywhere these days as the mercantile world seeks to capitalize on autumn. Thanks for all your efforts and what you suffer and sacrifice for the community. Cheers!

A moments silence please for Nige's mug. Never again will it deliver the amber nectar to the lips of a tea punk, let us remember it's steadfast delivery service and forgive Nige for ending it's illustrious career with an adulterated brew, the cuppa that broke it's ass. 😭😆

When I first roasted some Costa Rican I was very surprised how good it was. Almost 3/4 of the Arabica coffee grown in Costa Rica is 1000m or more above sea level. Even the lowland stuff you will likely find in instant coffee will still be grown close to that altitude. 3 is a lightish roast.

I started my British tea adventure 3 days ago with Yorkshire Gold and have drank two 16 ounce mugs per day. I haven't missed coffee. The tea came in a lovely tin that I'll refill. I guess I'm hardcore since I don't use milk or sugar, and a few times left the teabag in. I'm an espresso drinker but this tea may sway me.

Morning, Gents. Tesco and Sainsbury's head to head! The excited builds. Thanks, Nige, for taking one for the team, suffering through drinking more coffee in one sitting that intended! I think we need to delve deeper into mystery behind what happened to Numbers 1 and 2. Methinks something sinister is involved. Additionally, are the coffees sourced from the same coffee plantations in Costa Rica? Are these coffees even really from Costa Rica? Inquiring minds want to know. There's so much to discover with these two coffee products. However, since you've both declared that the two products are completely different, this may be easily answered. Nonetheless, good to know these two products pass the muster. Well done on going to cost to determine the winner, as these contests are intended to help the average consumer make informed purchase decisions. Thanks for all you do for the community. Cheers!
