I'm very much the "fiction is fiction, not reality" type. There is a line where anime goes too far for me, but at the end of the day they're fictional characters, so no real people are being hurt. Age gaps, especially between a young teen and an adult, are messy because someone could argue it's promoting or "romanticizing" those relationships. If it's the main focus of the anime, that's a bit hard for me to ignore. But if it's a case like Cardcaptor Sakura where it's just a weird part of her parents' backstory, it's easier to pretend it doesn't exist. For other taboo topics, it depends on the severity and how in your face it is.

I find that I'm a mix of the first two. I don't accept these things in real life but in fiction (and not just JP media but overall) I turn off parts of my brain. I understand me liking certain tropes in fiction isn't an indicator on my real life ethics and values.

I think what is most fascinating in Japanese culture in general is that manga and anime truly shape their (the Japanese peoples) way of obtaining knowledge such as history or sciences, and it also builds pop culture through references. There are students who learn historical figures or science theories through manga and then there are TV shows or movies today that reference getting super powers like Goku from DB or using a "dokodemo door" to transport from one place to another (Doraemon).

I remember loving “given” in my formative years, since it gave my repressed teenage queer self something wholesome and reciprocal to vicariously project into. After actually becoming more romantically (and physically) mature, nothing brought me greater joy than seeing an anime about two middle aged MEN who work at ordinary jobs, bonding semi-organically over their struggles with self-worth, identity, and the ability to be vulnerable around each other (a skill for which men are world renowned). I also appreciated that the show wasn’t centered solely around the confession or consummation of the leads as the ultimate goal and tries to show how adult relationships (and especially queer ones) can really be affected by poor communication, general attitudes of public disapproval, and work-life balance. 1:57 After rewatching a lot of my favorite shows, I commonly found the leads were less relatable than they used to be and come off as childish and immature. It unbelievable how low our standards used to be! 😅

I guess she is his type 😅. It happens sometime. Smart, strong men falling for much dumb, cute girl. They wants to take care of them, that's a male thing I think but they really want to play hero and guide for a girl they like. They also may be mean but they love to see you grow like mamoru. And I also think mamoru has a dark past so he just likes that bright aura around usagi. Plus most of the girl he meets are crushing on him but usagi is like whatever 😑. So he also don't feel that uncomfort with her. Messes with her and laughs. Despite all this, I truly believe he likes her genuinly. And it's just my opinion that no love story is perfect even we as human are flawed so is the relationship we shared. It's just your resolve to fix your mistakes that's can make a difference. Everybody feels love differently, there's no absolute rule for everyone hehe. Sorry for the paragraph

I must say, I like the new Starlight Transformation but it's hard to beat the original. However, understanding who the Starlight's are and where they come from, they needed to make it look different than the original Sailor Scouts since they are from another Star System entirely.
