Am I Crazy? | 1st Test Flight of Rehabed 1979 Cherokee Six
“And we’re BAAAAAAAAAAAACK” - J. Fallon
I’m Brian, a private pilot based in Northern Indiana. 18 months ago I took my 1979 Piper Cherokee Six in for its annual inspection, and it never came back.
First, we discovered cracks in some ribs too big to ignore under the right wing walk area. So off it went to Airframe Components in Kendallville Indiana. They specialize in rebuilding wings of all types, it’s pretty much all they do.
2 days later, we discovered a 3 inch crack in our crank-case extending through one of the bolt holes holding on the #2 cylinder. At this point we threw in the towel on our 32 year old engine and ordered a new, zero-time IO-540 from Lycoming complete with a factory warranty.
We rebuilt the airplane with all new components firewall forward including the wiring, cables, hoses, exhaust, and overhauled prop. And then we waited…
Delay after delay from Lycoming, 4 previous ship dates came and went until finally in June 2024, we got our new engine installed. Ground runs are complete so now we just need someone crazy enough to take it for a test flight and break-in the new engine.
We thoroughly briefed this flight, had emergency plans and procedures memorized for every stage of the flight. We got into our Nomex flight suit, strapped in to the bird, and executed the mission to fly the recommended test-flight profile per Lycoming Service Instruction No. 1427 Rev C. Did I survive?

The Hardest Story to Tell | April 25, 1979
Переглядів 6452 місяці тому
This is the hardest video I’ve ever had to make. When I started this project over a year ago, I had hopes of getting answers to 45 year old questions. "What was he thinking and feeling in all these images I’m seeing and hearing on my screen"? And thanks to a letter, and some very generous people who chose to join me in this, I got those answers. But there was one question I accepted I would nev...

    G,day from Sydney Australia. Why only cracks in one wing? What was the contributing factor? 2. That crack from the engine bolt, was that there last annual inspection. Did they use dye penitrent? 🌏🇦🇺

      @KAYDdubz 9 днів тому

      The only thing that is different between the 2 wings is 1 is used to get in an out of the plane. My guess is after hundreds of hours, and possibly thousands of in and outs of the plane it was enough to begin extremely slowly damaging it. That is only my best guess though.

    • @6ZeroAlpha

      it's the wing that you walk on to get in/out of the plane in the front. It's been walked on 1000's of times over 45 years. unfortunately, this is not an uncommon problem with PA-32's which is why we inspect this area ever year at annual per Piper service bulletin, and why the fix is so common and quick to do.

      thanks for stopping by and your service to our country. i would agree with your sentiment. the ones I've been privileged to know and come to call friends are some of the toughest, bravest, strong yet humble leaders ever. it was a true honor to have these men on my channel and to learn more about what I'm seeing, and what you are thinking and feeling as the pilot. Most of these guys were 23-26 yrs old during this time which is all that more impressive. I know me at 25, and no way would I have been able to rise to the occasion such as they did.

      @@6ZeroAlpha Very kind of you to respond to my comment. I've since realised you've been kind enough to post some films taken of your Father Naval career. Thank you for doing so. There's just something about watching footage taken on film from the 60's,70's to early 80's that has it's own magical quality and seeing the awesome Phantom in it's prime and element is something else. 2024 seems to be the year of The Phantom, I don't know if you are aware of a computer sim called DCS but there has recently been a Phantom module released which is very detailed inside and out, and a work of art in itself. There is also a You Tube Channel documenting the restoration to flight of a Phantom, the channels name is Diesel Thunder. That may be of interest to you to have a look at. Anyways, Best Wishes.

    Thank you for allowing me to vicariously experience flying a Cherokee Six! I learned how to fly in a Cherokee 140 while in college and also flew a 160 and 180. I was fascinated by the Cherokee Six, but never had the opportunity to fly one. Alas, I was not able to continue flying because I never made enough money. I still carry my pilot’s license in my wallet. Someday, I might find a way to fly a Cherokee Six with an instructor. I also enjoyed the views of St.Louis. Many of my college friends were from there. (I went to Mizzou.) I flew a couple of friends to St.Louis for fun. We landed at a small airport, the name of which I forgot. As part of my flight training, I flew into Lambert Field at night with my instructor. Thanks for bringing back these great memories! I do have a question, though: flying a private plane is a great way to go places faster than in a car. However, there’s the risk of being “socked in.” Certain weather conditions can ground even a proficient IFR-rated pilot. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your experience.

    • @6ZeroAlpha
      @6ZeroAlpha 3 місяці тому

      thanks for stopping by and the nice comments! Yes, even with an IFR rating, I have had to cancel a few flights due weather because it was below my personal minimums at the destination. One of our videos ("ICING") details a trip that was extended by a day because it became unsafe to continue and we had to spend an unplanned night in Smyrna TN. You just roll with it and plan contingencies when the forecast isn't ideal.

    Awesome to listen to. My uncle was with VF-114 from Oct 67 to Jan 68 when he was killed when his F4 went into the Tonkin Gulf and both crew were lost.

      I kinda thought the same thing when I was editing so I left it in there. I found it on accident when I made an Instagram "reel" prior to the vlog and it really captured my sentiment perfectly in those several minutes; I wish I could fly everyday, screw the money, career, responsibilities.... It broke every single "How to get & hold a viewer" UA-cam rule (1 continuous shot for 4 mins, no dialogue, preachy speech by some dead guy....) but sometimes you go with your gut and forget what the "experts" say. Thx for watching, fly safe!

    Good video , however you need to tighten up on your radio procedures. Never use the words ‘take off’ on a clearance . The controller’s clearance was ‘after departure …………’; you read back ‘after take off’ Not good.

      thx! Good to have personal minimums and adhere to them always. And it's never good to test them with passengers onboard. I have decent actual IFR time and as a result my minimums have come down over the years, but as described in the video we had reached those and it was time to land. Fly safe!

    What were you able to see in the precip forecast prep? What you described was an inversion with freezing drizzle which is pretty serious so I was curious if that failed to appear in available forecasts or AIRMETs.

    • @6ZeroAlpha
      @6ZeroAlpha 8 місяців тому

      Freezing drizzle was not in the forecast or METARs in the area, and no precip showing in Foreflight radar at the time we encountered it. Forecasted ice potential at our planned altitude in TN & KY so I stayed below the ceiling on this whole flight even though we were IFR. In hindsight I believe it was Supercooled Liquid Droplets (SLD) and definitely was not to be toyed with which is why I had to get below the freezing level fast. Fly safe!

    • @dryreed
      @dryreed 8 місяців тому

      @@6ZeroAlpha Thanks. So, to my understanding, SLD means there had to have been a temp inversion and you were flying in sub freezing VMC. I would be curious if that can be seen on a Skew T Log P. I am not looking to judge, just trying to learn how to avoid repeating your scary predicament. Would you mind sharing the date and approx time of the flight so I can study the weather archives? Safe travels!

  • @dryreed
    @dryreed 8 місяців тому

    I was confused by your intro when you said the airlines were all grounded but you could still fly your light piston. You then go on to fly in severe clear VMC which airliners would have no difficulty with. I feel this could mislead some to think you are free to fly in weather worse than airliners tolerate. Of course you are, but I didn’t think that was what you meant to imply.
