My So-Called Gen X Life
United States
Приєднався 2 сер 2023
My name is Natalie and I was born in 1977. On this channel, I attempt to re-examine the news I consumed, the pop culture I adored, and the education I received during my ideal American Gen X childhood and beyond. Think of it as nostalgia with a heavy dose of criticism.
These (16) Things Made It Awesome To Be A Kid in the 80s
Growing up Generation X and/or Xennial was special. The 80s were the best time ever to be a kid in America. Here are all the reasons why.

Wheel of Fortune's Forgotten Origin Story (Who Was Drunk During the Pilot?)
Переглядів 108 тис.Місяць тому
Wheel of Fortune's history dates back farther than Pat Sajak's first episode in 1981. The show was actually created in 1973 by Merv Griffin, and had a different duo hosting the show. It was NOT Pat Sajak and Vanna White. This video documents the forgotten origin story of Wheel of Fortune.

Miniseries were a huge deal in the 1980s. They were such massive events that people would cancel all other plans and literally have watch parties. Of course, the phone was off the hook so there were no interruptions. I miss these days! So, I made a list of what I think are the 11 best 1980s TV miniseries, and found out where you can watch them now. Here are the links I mention in the video. ua-...

The birth years for Generation X have changed quite a bit over the years, according to people who make these decisions. So, who really is a part of Gen X? I went down a bit of a rabbit hole. Here's what I found.

Evening Shade was a TV sitcom starring Burt Reynolds that aired on CBS from 1990-1994 when I was in high school...and I totally forgot about it! Until I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago on UA-cam. There's a whole playlist of the entire series! This video shares the Evening Shade story and my reasons why you should watch it. The character that Burt Reynolds plays, Wood Newton, couldn't be more d...

The mainstream media doesn’t realize they don’t have influence anymore
Переглядів 5705 місяців тому
The corporate legacy media will not have a major influence on this year's election. The vast majority of Americans DO NOT trust the corporate mainstream media and millions have turned away from cable news on TV and are now getting their news from numerous other sources. No one cares about what the corporate media is saying. No one believes them anymore. The mainstream media hasn't gotten the memo.

Was Friends a Ripoff? WB Exec Reveals The Truth!
The man at 8:41 is the REAL Stephen.... he played a police officer in the movie about his story.
A LOT of marriages also came from North and South.... James Read and Wendy Kilbourne (still married).... Genie Francis and Johnathan Frakes (still married) and Lesly Ann Down and Don E. FauntLeRoy a cameraman (not sure, but think they are still married)..... there was a lot of love on that set! Terri Garber also married a writer of the series Chris Hager but ended in divorce.
You missed the GREATEST of all, CENTENNIAL!!!!! But, that could have been before your time... my favorite on this list is in my top three of all time, at number two... North and South. 1. Centennial 2. North and South 3. Shogun.
Chiefs was amazing! So glad you have it on your list. An early depiction of a serial killer getting away with his crimes for decades on the backdrop of a southern town and its growth in the early half of the 20th century.
Video City rental in our town was the ‘cool’ place to get an after school job. I just ended up working at the mall because it was on bus route.😂
I was born in September of 1988, so I don't remember the 80s at all!
My elementary school had a metal slide.... at least 20 feet tall. Surrounding it? Concrete. Ain't no wood chips back then.
The photography is bad on some of these, as if she photographed it from a TV screen.
Or it’s the video quality of a 40 year old movie. 🤷🏻♀️
3:04 Here's something you might find hard to believe...I have been thinking of the title of a book for about ten years but have been unable to find the name... o Until now, it is on that book order! (I remembered the book cover) o It is Trapped in Death Cave!
Wow!!! That’s awesome.
@@mysocalledgenxlife Speaking of the book order...I am not sure what your taste in books is...when I was in elementary school I ordered the book Strangely Enough. If you love Unsolved Mysteries, it is an incredible book! There is a cult following to the book now!
A+ video! LOVE IT! Thank you so much for making the video!
My experience is very similar (being born in a Midwest town in 1979), so cool!
As a gen xer I actually like Internet and cell phones and most modern tech. I love Spotify. No need to carry about a ton of tapes.. I can make a mixed tape easy peasy... I hate ear buds though. I don't like things in my ears...
As a Gen X'er (born 1979) that grew up in the midwest (the town of Burwell, Nebraska), first I am going to point out the few differences in the experience before highlighting the similarities: x 4:15 Never watched Faerie Tale Theater (but I will check it out) and Silver Spoons was widely watched in our area (never watched that but will check it out)
Though I wasn't born until 1997, I do have some degree of resonance towards the footage around 15:35, as you can still find that sort of thing today. Even if it is somewhat difficult to find where I live in New York.
The Blue And The Gray is very underrated IMO...
I need to check out "I'll take Manhattan". They just don't have the budgets for mini-series anymore on free network TV. I just saw "Moby Dick 2010", a low budget film on Tubi. I thought it was going to be horrible but it was saved by an over the top performance by Barry Bostwick.
Aloha, The Deliberate Stranger was based on a book by the same name written by the late Ann Rule. Love your videos. Mahalo🤙🏼🌴☀️
Not all of us were kicked out of the house and told to go out and play. I am a Gen Xer and I wasn't done like that.
I've got one for you! 1981 Goliath Awaits. Starring the late great Christopher Lee and Mark Harmon.
A quintessential list, although I would swap out I'm Telling with Starcade. Also, if I were to expand your list by five, I would add: Chain Reaction Jackpot Talk About Hit Man Wipeout
Firmly in the GenX bracket (b. 1970), that montage at the beginning really hit me in the feels. Scholastic Book Fair, aw, man. (I don't think Book It was a thing when I was in grade school in the '70s) (I always thought it was said like "ex--ennial"--TIL)
Book it is definitely a xennial thing since it started in 85. I’ve heard it pronounced ex-ennial too. That’s probably the right way to say it. My phonics training won’t let me 😂😂.
I saw Space Camp in an empty theater back when it came out
I loved loved loved Anne of Green Gables. It was GREAT !!
Great video. So intriguing to watch. I remember many of these mini series. Subscribed !
Your mention of the Atlanta Child Murders made me think of two mini-series with mostly black casts, The Women Of Brewster Place and Shaka Zulu.
Look at that, the poor little rich girl went to Downton Abbey !
Oh Batteries Not Included and Short Circuit were out around same time as Flight of Navigator Radio Flyer The Boy Who Could Fly and Dennis Quaid in Frequency but I can’t remember what year it came out
Some kind of wonderful and Big too😊💐
Fried Green Tomatoes was good too
Fire in the Sky was great along with Memphis Belle I loved DB Sweeney still do 😊💐Also My Chauffeur and Kiss Me Goodbye oh and couple of Jeff Bridges movies Nadine and Starman Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead was cool too :)
Please do a 1990s top mini series video xx
Ahh the blue and the grey, the mini series that got me into the civil war. While North and South gets all the attention when it comes to 80s civil war mini series, this one, in my opinion, is the better of the two. Sure, they took some historical liberties in regards to Jonah being around Lincoln for all those historical moments (the sharps rifle testing for example), but the actors in this were great, a lot of big names of the times. I was in 4th grade at the time I saw this , about 4 years after it came out. I watched it over and over again, because blockbuster had it on 2 vhs tapes, about 6 hrs total. I treated it like a movie, I would sit down and just watch it, the whole thing. I even remember my father dubbing it on a blank vhs tape, you could do that with 2 vcrs , so he wouldn’t have to keep spending the $2 to rent it for me. That theme song will get stuck in your head too, it’s a moving piece of music. The scene in Vicksburg, where Jon talks with his brother Mathew on the battlefield, during a pause in the fighting, makes me think of me and my brother, and it gets me every time. ❤ Thanks for making a part 2 and including the blue and the grey, Makes my gen x heart smile😊
I'll take manhattan is my favorite
Winds of War was a biggie. I read the book first. Shogun was my favorite. Read that book too.
0:51 I'm ready to solve ...
I was born in 1980 and I don't remember any of these. But my sister was born in 1977 too and she wouldn't remember any of them either because we both grew up under a rock. Our mother would get up early one weekend every season to screen the Saturday morning cartoons to tell us if they were okay for us to watch. We weren't even allowed to watch Smurfs.
yes V was amazing......
HOW could miss the original IT -by Stephen King??????????????
It came out in 1990…
Two others that I never saw all the way through but looked pretty good for what I saw and mom or dad seemed to be interested. “Peter The Great” on NBC from 1986 three past. “George Washington” on CBS three part each for two books in 1984 and 1986.
