Subaru Starlink is retained and fully functional, factory settings are accessible for lights and locks. This unit will fit nicely in this car, vents are not blocked. The colors match the car beautifully. For now I am running the factory speakers, this will eventually be replaced with aftermarket amps and speakers

That snapping sound was caused by one of the rubber bands breaking.

I had a few of these growing up as a teenager. They were abundant and cheap to buy, reliable and cheap to run. It was the perfect car for a teenager as it was small, cheap to buy, easy to drive (and improve your skills) and affordable to operate.

When the clutch went out on my regular car in early '87 I rented the cheapest can I could find to run errands while setting up a new apartment. A worn out Pontiac T1000 4 door with AC and automatic. That cousin to the Chevette was most absolutely gutless car I have ever driven in my life. It topped out at about 53 on the highway could be pushed up to about 56 if you babied the throttle so it didn't run so rich in passing gear. During Driver Training in High School we drove a 1979 Datsun B210 4 door with air and AC. When your driver training instructor says "when leaving a stop sign or signal floor it or we'll be run over" that's bad but that T1000 was much worse.

I had one of these things! It was a gutless wonder! The engine finally quit. Came home, and as soon as I pulled into the driveway, a knocking sound came from under the hood. Something in the engine finally gave out.

When my mom got pregnant with my younger sister, my dad had to sell his '69 Chevelle SS. It was replaced with a new spanking new 1978 Chevette. Mom says he disappeared for 3 days; I'm thinking much alcohol was consumed, but he refuses to say. I, being the supportive son that I am, regularly send him photos of '69 Chevelles selling on Barrett's.

44 hp at the wheels, I would have guess 50, engine is rated at 70hp new. My pop had a '78 Rabbitt diesel 4 speed, 48hp engine, who knows what the wheel hp was (maybe 40) but it would go 87mph at 5400 rpm, that means cruising at 60mph it was already doing 3600. I got my license in that thing and used to drive it 75 mph. I never bothered to realize I was killing it. We got near 200k miles out of it, and sold it in 1992.

To pass on the highway you had to use the 7th Cavalry technique of dropping back and when you see an opening in the oncoming traffic, you sound the bugle, start charging from behind and slingshot out into the other lane as the oncoming car passes going the other way.

My first girlfriend traded in her Camaro for a Chevette "to save money". I never forgave her for that. Driving out Highway 17 used to hurt my foot because I kept pressing down harder and harder on the accelerator trying to get a few more mph out of that box of crap. The only good thing I can say about the Chevette is it compares favorably to the Vega she bought from an old couple, then asked for her money back. The Vega was truly a disposable car!

Had one of these for years, a '79 two door with the 1.6 liter gas engine and auto transmission. Bought it used as a cheap li'l getaround when I was in the service. After my EAOS, I folded all 6'-3" of myself into that thing for a 12-hour, 600 mile trip home in '87. Drove it for another eight years, used it as a pizza delivery car for a fair portion of that time. Thing had somewhere north of 240k miles on it when I sold it (the odometer had stopped working), still ran good, and it never failed to start aside from once when the battery died, and once when the fuel pump quit. Maintenance and repair was easy and parts were inexpensive, the car always got good gas mileage, too. Definitely not the fastest car on the road (not even close!), but fling it into a turn and it would hang on tight. It inexplicably did well in the snow, too - especially with the slightly-wider-than-spec rear tires I put on it. The secret to a car's longevity and reliability was to keep up with the maintenance. Change the oil every 3,000 miles religiously, keep it tuned up, don't thrash it, fix minor problems before they turn into expensive major repairs. You'd be surprised at how many people don't follow these basic rules. Yeah. It was a weak-kneed, cleap little POS econobox. It never pretended to be anything else, nor should anybody expect it to be anything else. But it was a damned reliable and cost-effective little weak-kneed, cheap little POS econobox.

my parents had one when i was in high school found out the damn thing had a posi rear in it..i did tire spins or laid rubber after i figured how to do it and this was with any auto trans in it ..did it so much one day mom was driving it and had to call me an dad at home to come get her she had a flat tire..while changing it my dad ask me why a car with only 30k miles would have bald tires , i said cheap tires maybe...waited till i was in the army and over in germany before i told him how i did it..wanted that safety of 3000 miles distance..😁😄

What was that? 144 HP? My Suzuki Samurai that I got off the lot in 88 had 63 advertised HP, but it would climb a sheer face it was that low geared. I wish I still had it. It was a great, fun vehicle. My ex had a Chevette. It was fine other than the front drum brakes. No idea what GM was smoking that day.
