Voodoo Planet Audiobook, by Andre Norton, read by David O'Brien
Voodoo Planet Audiobook, by Andre Norton, read by David O'Brien
Voodoo Planet by Andre Norton is a science fiction novel that follows the adventures of Dane Thorson and the crew of the Free Trader ship, the Solar Queen. The story is set on the jungle world of Khatka, a planet originally settled by native-African refugees from Earth’s atomic wars. Khatka is now a safari world where big-game hunters come to test their skills.
Dane, along with Captain Jellico and Medic Craig Tau, is invited to Khatka by Chief Ranger Kort Asaki. They soon find themselves entangled in a conflict with a witch doctor named Lumbrilo, who uses psychological manipulation, hallucinogenic drugs, and latent telepathy to conjure up ghosts and demons.
The crew faces various dangers, including being stranded in the jungle and encountering poachers. Medic Tau, who has studied magic on many worlds, ultimately confronts Lumbrilo, turning his magic back on him and resolving the conflict. The crew then returns to the Solar Queen, hoping for a quieter journey ahead.

    Anyone else feel like Richard was a real a** in this section of the tale? If he wanted to be upset with someone, he should have been upset with his fiancee. He is forgetting that (1) she is a grown woman with a mind of her own and he does not have the authority to forbid her to do anything or give orders where she's concerned, and also that she will willfully disregard whatever he sais if she thinks she needs to protect him and (2) Kara et al were not going to be able to stop her. He overestimates their ability on that front. "Lord Rahl said no" is not sufficient, clearly, and were they supposed to physically restrain her? I don't think so. She could have taken one with her power even if they'd dared try, which none of them would. Had they tried, and hurt her in any way, he'd have been upset with them for *that*, too, and "You told us not to allow her to go" wouldn't have been sufficient defense. They're all servants, too. They're used to following orders. Yes, primarily the Lord Rahl, but the Mother Confessor would have some authority as well. I also agree with you all who said the women were turned stupid in this book.Truth is, though, that I think one of the downsides of the series is that Richard and Kahlan forever are doing stupid stuff and complete idiots for each other, and put themselves in danger they didn't have to, and cause trouble they didn't have to, because they love each other more than is healthy. Heh. Don't mind me. I'm not a fan of romance novels and primarily see romance as a distraction from a good story whenever it's present, as a rule.

    Anyone else think Richard goes for his sword far too often once he learns about it back in book 1? From then on, he's touching it constantly, reaching for it any time someone so much as confuses him, etc. while talking about how much he loathes using it. If you don't like what you do with it, then don't have it as the first arrow in your quiver until you stop and think, think first and understand the situation before you reach for the quiver, so to speak. @mikemolaro4198 If Brogan was supposed to portray a Christian, then Goodkind had a very poor view of what a Christian is. He was never the "every man". The "every man" doesn't insult, degrade and abuse his own sister at every turn, nor does his sister intimate that she does certain incestuous favors for him. That's just flat disturbing. You could see from the beginning that he had a very twisted world view and his insanity wasn't a long step. I agree, though, that his end was disappointing, and Lunetta's was even more so. It's a shame Adie couldn't convince her to come away from Brogan even when he lost his marbles.

    Asimov and a few dozen sci-fi writers in the 1950s were prophets. Nearly all sci-fi since the 50s have been based on work by these writers. And nearly all the technologies we use today were predicted then. Asimov said reading sci-fi raises one's IQ. He was right. I would also add that reading widely in substantial fields of knowledge unifies the individual brain. It decompartmentalizes the brain by replacing beliefs with knowledge and evidence-based data. When intelligent AI is realized the world AI network will be decompartmentalized and each individual human will need to be similarly decompartmentalized to keep up. Or go extinct. I could be wrong.

    Mr. Sullivan's a lot more fun to listen to than Jim Bond. Mr. Bond has a nice deep voice, but his reading style is bland, better suited to nonfiction books -- and he's read his share of those, too. Actually the commercial versions of these books are fairly spattered with narrators. Last I heard, it seemed they were going back and consolidating narrators at least for the main series. Sam Tsoutsouvas is my favorite of the commercial narrators in the series. You can sample him on audible if you don't know him. He did books 10 and 11 on up through Warheart at 14, then went back and did WFR. I don't know if he's continuing with the rest. I wasn't impressed with the woman they had do The First Confessor and the Nicci series. Of course, I wasn't impressed with the books themselves, either. This playlist seems to be the NLS ones, which aren't the same as the commercially available narrators.

    @4:18:34, Seems to me that there hadn't been enough time between The Mule's dissemination of the Foundation's collected scientific knowledge during his reign and the 'present' for that knowledge to really sink in. Consider that at the time The Mule made his entrance, most of the Periphery had lost the ability to produce atomic power. Even closer to the heart of the Empire, Siwenna had huge relics of atomic generators (still operating after HOW many centuries?), but NOBODY on the planet knew how to repair one, much less build a replacement unit. I just think that it would take longer than 50 years to build back to an 'atomically-savvy' society when a lot of your population had to take their shoes off to count past ten for the last ten generations.

    • @dzanderallison
      @dzanderallison 8 днів тому

      consider, though, the Mule's powers. He could convert a group of scientists to be fanatically devoted to training atomic scientists

      You know what date the first powered heavier-than-air aircraft flew? When we managed to land and return the first live human on our moon? The date when the first research into radioactives took place? When the first uncontrolled nuclear reaction took place? The date when the first uncontrolled fusion reaction took place? No. 50 years is not a long time. If there was sufficient social, political and financial will we'd have working fusion plants already. Hell, back in the late eighties and early nineties i used to play with a working tokamak at my university, and it could sustain a fusion reaction (it did) just not with a positive energy output. And that was in a country where many did not HAVE shoes to take off!
