I use to love duty free years ago (about 10 years ago) when it use to be legit. Now it is just a money grab.
Not all duty free shops have good prices. LHR, Gibraltar (the best) and Delhi are some that I have found to be good. Most of the ones in the US do noy have good prices.
If you are going to Spain depending on which airport you are arriving to, I would recommend that you do not buy any whiskies at all. But if you like your brandys, you should look for the Brandy Dr Jerez. Particularly the 1 litre Carlos 1. Google search the duty free at the airport first before you arrive and see If they are there and then buy 2 to 3 of them on the way back as you won't find them in any specialised retailer back home in the country where you are from👍👍👍 €26 for a 1 litre Carlos 1 Brandy De Jerez😀😁😎🤩
Duty Free can be a good bet but only for experienced whisky monsters like me. I walk past 95 % of it because I'm thinking of a cheap and quality slurp on my holiday. A litre of Ardbeg 10 for less than £50. I'm good with that. One litre Glen Garioch 12 the same. Most of the rest, especially when it's Travel Retail excusive, is absolute pants. Duty Free retail is a market for 'normal whisky buyers' and people like us only occasionally.
@@welshtoro3256 agree. Ardbeg 10 cost me €45 so ok. But from my examples you can see big price difference. Not all duty free shops are crazy. Saw some good prices. Istanbul, Qatar, Emirates Brussels, can be expensive. But if you know your prices and stick to what you want then it’s ok. Thanks for watching. Remember to like and subscribe. Almost at 2000.
I've only been to duty-free shops in the US, the UK, and France, and the prices I've seen were about the same as retail, but in some cases, much lower. Not to mention the access to the travel exclusives, which sometimes are interesting. I recently bought a bottle of Ardbeg Smoketrails Bourbon & Côte Rôtie at Orly in Paris for 74 euro for a 1-liter bottle, and it's delicious. I wish I'd bought more. And they had Glenmorangie Signet for under 200 euros (it's a bit over US$300 in my local market). I think the key is to have good knowledge of the market and prices at regular retail before passing by those tempting duty-free shops.
@@KakoGuzmanMusic absolutely. Like I said in the video. Make sure that you know the price before you buy. Thanks for watching.
Ardbeg Smoketrails Bourbon & Côte Rôtie was70 GBP at LHR last December. Will have to check out CDG next month. Hope their prices are close to Orly.
I only buy at the duty free shop if there is Travel exclusive bottles or i cant find the whisky in Sweden. Cheers.
@@benzabenza2743 Good advice. Cheers

Nice review Gert! You are very enthusiastic about scotch! I understand although these days I am taking a big break for health reasons. In truth alcohol is poison - sadly. Different brands with a aged 18 years statement and very good value for money for the moment that are not Sherry Whiskies would be Deanston, Loch Lomond and Glen Moray🍎🍒🍓🍅
@@user-no6xe6vs6q great trio right there. Cheers
There really isnt that many Sherry Whiskies Aged 18 Years for good value for money anymore. The new Redbreast Aged 18 Years @ 46% abv for €225 which I will not buy😭 The Glen Dromach Aged 18 Years @ 46% abv for €192.50c😚 I definitely will never buy Macallan Aged 18 Years and the Tamdhu Aged 18 Years😡 Yet you can buy the Glen Allachie Aged 18 Years @ 46% abv for €120🤩 and the Ledaig Aged 18 Years @ 46% abv also for €120😀 You will be very very fortunate to buy the Arran Aged 18 Years @ 46% abv for €105 anymore🤔

A personal opinion regarding the price point of the standard bottelings of Kilchoman. Here in Sweden the cost is...Machir Bay sek689 (€61), Sanaig sek699 (€62), Batch Strength sek895 (€79) in todays currency. I think that's quite a fair price for a craft presented whisky, even if it's a NAS whisky. P.S. I dscoverd yesterday (from Gwhisky) that The Sanaig is coming as a Cask Strength version soon....that would probably be a really good one, I hope the price will be fair. Cheers
@@bluesmanen1 yes the cs is definitely something that interests me. Prices are a bit strange for me in general. I don’t mind paying more for quality. This brand is a good example. Unfortunately I live in Belgium and it is way more expensive here.
@@WhiskyLoversSociety That surprises me a bit, I thought that Sweden was quite expensive. Out of pure curiosity, I gave you the price of three standard bottelings from Kilchoman, what are the prices, in Belgium, for those three?

Not interested in the core range at the prices they are at now (particularly the 18). I don't live that far from the distillery (40 miles) so if I want to treat myself I will get one of their handfills direct from the distillery, or a single cask, albeit they are also expensive.

Sipping the new 2024 release now. It´s very good, but it is not at all what I expected. Don’t know how it compares to your sample, but it is very floral and light compared to the 12 and 18. I was a big fan of Glendronach during the Billy Walker era. Benriach were superb as well. I knew it was going to go down in quality and up in price the moment Brown-Foreman got their hands on them. We all know Billy had a lot of old barrels and the age statements were top dressed so they were very good whiskies. Brown-Forman come in and start selling all the old single barrels and so no top dressing any more. It doesn't mean the whisky isn't any good but I'm just not excited any more. The 15 is the only one I'd consider buying. (I have one bottle of the old 15 left.) I recently opened a Billy Walker era Benriach 17 - Pedro Ximenez finish and it is stunning. We used to drink whisky like that but not any more. We have become acclimatised to drinking lower quality over a number of years and the prices have gone up. I imagine the Glendronach 18 is very good but I'm never going to spend almost £200 on it. I notice that the rebrand has added a further £10 to Glendronach expressions. By the way, sherry casks can only come from Andalucia so there's nothing unique about Glendronach's bragging rights. By now we should all know this but it's worth repeating. The 'sherry' casks Glendronach are talking about will never have contained any liquid sold as drinking sherry. It's just wood seasoned with wine intended to be emptied into a solera butt which will be aged until it is Oloroso. It's pre-Oloroso. Sherry bodegas will never sell the barrels that age the finished product. The whisky industry gets prepared barrels made to order. The sherry bodegas control the terms because they know the whisky producers need their product. Glendronach's claim of hand selected casks is ridiculous: They will have an arrangement with a bodega to provide a certain sort of quality and the rest is down to how they, themselves, blend and age their spirit. I have a second home in Andalucia and I've visited many bodegas and talked to them about this. Believe me when I say that the sherry world doesn't need whisky but the whisky world needs sherry - or something quite like it.

The only reason I can see for rebranding is suffering sales. I absolutely loved Glendronach 12-18. 15 was the gem when Billy Walker was throwing more older whiskies in it. Last 12 I had was less than impressive. It used to be my go to. Maybe Billy's taste profile just fits me better.
