The Theological Education Fund is the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s best hope of ensuring the church of Christ is prepared to serve long into the future. The fund is housed at the Presbyterian Foundation and is the sole source of denomination-wide funding for seminaries from the PC(USA). We rely on donations from Synods, Presbyteries, congregations and individuals to continue our legacy of support. Gifts to this fund help ensure every church has a seminary-trained pastor.

Join us for a conversation with David LaMotte, a songwriter, speaker, author and activist who has performed and spoken at many PC(USA) events. He has performed over 3500 concerts and released 13 full-length CDs of primarily original music, touring in all of the 50 states and on five of the seven continents. His second TEDx talk (2024), Why Heroes Don’t Change the World, was chosen as a TED Editor’s Pick. His earlier (2017) TEDx talk, Music Can Help Us Understand Peace and Conflict, is featured on TED.com.

But is it 85% (as he says) or 75% (as the description says)?
Thanks for watching the video and for your question. The figure that we've used consistently is 75%, which is on the conservative side when it comes to teaching elder retirements. But we've also heard the number that Brian has used here. There are many variables, including the age of current candidates, some of which are near retirement age as well and can push that 75% up to 85% fairly quickly. It's uncertain, though, if older candidates ever intend to become ordained or serve as pastors. What it all boils down to is that many pastors will be near retirement age, and soon. This is true of all mainline denominations. You might find this helpful: www.barna.com/research/aging-americas-pastors/. This is a major study released earlier this year by Barna that discusses the aging of American pastors. We have found it helpful in assessing the PC(USA) and measuring it against other denominations.
