We thought about it but the whole idea was building something with only the gear we bring on our usual camping trips. Also we were hoping to find something a little more level lol.

Thanks! It’s a great little saw and I got it for free! Although I think I prefer my friends agawa canyon, mostly for the ease of setup.

We did notice that on the map but I don’t think it showed any parking. Is there overnight parking from that location?

I mean I have heard of people taking their cats but never witnessed it lol. I think my dog likes the portages more than being in the canoe but she does like both. Do you take your dog on lots of trips?

lol thanks! It was a lot of work for 1 day but we’ve definitely done worse. I’m still impressed you two tackled it on paddle boards. Seems like an extreme trip to take on standing up. If you haven’t been to Chinguchi I would definitely recommend taking on a loop up there. Beautiful place and the routes will be a lot easier on you two and the boards. If you don’t mind whitewater and you’re looking for something a little more extreme then you should try the Petawawa River. I would love to see that on paddle boards! Cheers!

They definitely were Sandhill Cranes. I’ve seen them plenty of times paddling through swamps but never a flock of them flying by a mountain top. It was super cool to see!

That’s an interesting way of handling a portage. I’ve never seen somebody do it like that. On really big portages ( over 2000m) we set our stuff down halfway and go back for our second load. Although that shouldn’t be necessary for us anymore. Hopefully just a break in the middle. A few more tweaks to the process and single carries will be a breeze.

Interesting! This cub was on the east side as well but more towards the north end of the lake from the sounds of it.

The closest access point is the sturgeon river access point. It is possible to hike or paddle in and out in a day. I know people have done it. However it would be one hell of a day lol. Personally I would plan to spend at least one night camping at a site or sleeping in your car. Considering it takes multiple hours to drive in the logging road that takes you to the sturgeon. Thanks! I’m glad you liked it! That’s interesting, must be fairly recent that they changed the route because we climbed it this summer. I didn’t actually use the ladder on the way up. There was a series of rock ledges to the left of the ladder that seemed less sketchy and got me up pretty easily. Sugar lake is definitely worth a look, crystal clear water, a couple epic sites and some sunken cedar boats to check out. Sometimes it pays to take the road less travelled!

@@ryansroutes1805 That would also explain why the new route sucked as I was there in September, definitely needs some more foot traffic to wear in the new route.

@@prayfornathannatureshow it must have been changed sometime in July/ August because we’re there about the first of July.

@@adamhazell678 I’ve never had any issues with parking at these places. Usually there’s plenty of places to park. Just be considerate of others that might be using the put in or neighbors to the put in and you shouldn’t have a problem.

It was great to meet you too! I guess that means you made it out alright. We were thinking of you two as we did the chain of ponds from Red Boat to Fishog. They must have been tough on the paddle boards! You guys are champs!

I owned a swift pack 13’ -6” for a few years. It was a nice boat to paddle and carry but it was very fragile feeling and I don’t think the new ones are much better. If you can get a decent deal on them, like when swift sells off their rentals in the winter it’s not a bad buy. Although I think it’s deff worth taking a look at langfords and we no nahs as well as they both make really nice boats!

Thanks! That’s exactly the kind of experiences with langfords I was hoping to hear about. As far as I understand our boat is already about the same age as your parents canoe. In great shape though so we’re hoping to have it for a long time!

lol I’ve never experienced it first hand since all the tandem canoeists I paddle with seem to get along alright. Maybe I should be more scared?

I agree! I’ve always liked what I’ve heard about Langfords but never actually paddled one until last night.

We took it for a quick paddle last night and it performed very well! A little unstable feeling when you first climb in but in my experience that means more speed and maneuverability once you learn to trust the boats secondary stability. I might put together a review video on it once I have time to rig it for my cameras. My quick thoughts are that it’s probably faster than a typical prospector and likely just as versatile.

They weren’t overly secure at the time we did it. Pretty narrow and slippery feeling but that’s early spring for you. It might be better in the summer or fall when the water is at a lower level. This trail is a pretty rough/ fairly unmaintained trail so you won’t find any man made bridges or walkways to get you through the rough/ wet sections. Hope that helps you out! I don’t know if it’s a worldwide problem or just a North American thing but they’re everywhere! Lol. The best is when you see a bag of dog poo hanging from a tree like a Christmas ornament. We just like seeing wilderness that’s fairly untouched other than the pathways through it so we do our part to clean it up a bit. Thanks! I’m glad you like it!

Sounds like an interesting setup. I’ve never seen somebody move the seat that far in a solo. Sounds almost like paddling a tandem backwards.

@@ryansroutes1805 From the center line of the canoe to the center of the seat is 3 feet. It is 4 feet from the seat to the stern. Just that far back has allowed for the use of the traditonal J-stroke to keep the boat traveling in a straight line. Requires camping gear in the bow for balance. When going into a stong wind, I woud kneel just behind the portage bar to avoid getting blown around.

Yah it sounds like it would be interesting to paddle without that gear weight. Especially into some diagonal headwinds lol. Although there’s always a rock on shore when needed. I used to have to add weight to the bow of my jon boat whenever I was driving it solo or else it would get super sketchy.

It was a very nice site other than the garbage left there by previous campers. As well as all the poo and toilet paper at the top of the big hill. Seemed like somebody didn’t like using the thunderbox for some reason lol. Was the wind kinder to you than it was to us?

@@ryansroutes1805 I did pick up some trash, not much by any means. Was fairly clean. Didnt see any poops either, but I always use the woods myself - 50 yards in minimum and bury them. The only thing that bothered me was the thunder box so close to main camp, the monstrosity of a firepit, and the amount of trees people had clear cut essentially for wood. Definitely a site thats had a number done on her, but the view and access are hard to come by

@@TheNorthwestWind yah as far as the firewood goes it seemed pretty cleared out. It’s probably because of the two sites being back to back.

I researched it a bit a couple years ago when the seam tape started failing on the tarp for my hammock. I’d probably still use the caulking method for that repair but I haven’t gotten around to it. How did it work out for flexibility? Do you think it would work good for seam repair?

@@abida.sharmin92 I had cell reception at the top of Ishpatina ridge. No cell reception other than that. It’s a fairly remote area.

You’re welcome! This one is definitely a bucket list trip. Even if you can just do the maple mountain hike and the waterfalls section that I’ll show more of in part 2. I grew up in Muskoka as well, still living there to this day.

@@mokotramp those are the main reason I love this tarp rigging. A rope ridge line helps in strong winds but for a quick deployment and ease of use, bungees work every time.

@@ryansroutes1805 Also, on the tie outs I use enough cord so I can double it up if the wind gets stronger, stops the cord over stretching as I'm only using 5mm.

@@mokotramp I do the same whenever possible. I also keep a couple extra lengths attached to the tarp so that I can had to the length of other tie outs if needed.

@@ryansroutes1805 Who needs fancy knots and 550 when you have bungee and biners? 🤣

@@ryansroutes1805I just viewed your longer video with Maple Mountain. Yes, you did mention the winds in the narrow chain of lakes leading to Tupper. Maybe the terrain acts like a wind tunnel.

Thanks for letting me know. I was always under the impression that Maple Mountain was long considered the highest point. Until more modern surveying proved it to be Ishpatina Ridge.

Yes “ charged through the nose” might have been a bit of an exaggeration. Although it can still be hard to justify when there’s plenty of places offering the same amenities for free.
